I normally don't come on and write reviews, but this one seemed necessary. Stopped there with my father on a Friday evening. The bar was separate and busy but still kept the dining room quiet! From the minute the bread came out, warm, I was excited to see what would be next. I'm a pretty tough critic and I have nothing bad to say about any of the food and our server was amazing. I went with friends and we shared everything, which made it a fun experience. We ordered Barbara's Arugula Salad, fried mozzarella bites, and two pizzas. The salad was decent, but I wasn't a fan of the candied walnuts -- they were a bit sweet and got stuck on your teeth but others in my group enjoyed it. The fried mozzarella bites were enjoyable, and the pizzas were flavorful. Overall a nice place to grab pizza and share a meal with friends. read more

Food was very good! The best calamari I ever had. It was a special teriyaki one but it was awesome. The filet mignon was a very nice piece of meat. The shrimp were large and delicious. The white wine Sangria was very strong which is good or bad depending on your taste. The bread was ok to good, needs a bit more salt but that's my issue. Our waitress was energetic, responsive and quick all good things! She smiled which is key! read more

Had dinner for two. Was a bit confused from the start. The hostess sits you and turns into the waiter. This is not a review on the waiter. He did the best he could. The food, I would not feed it to my pets. We ordered Rice Balls Calamari, and meatballs for appetizers. The calamari was very bland, the meatballs were like shoe leather. Probably the worst meatballs I've ever tasted in my lifetime. The rice balls I'll give that a 3.5 out of 10. Onto the dinner I ordered the chicken Murphy, the meat portions were terrible and I also was confused with the rice serving that it comes with. Definitely not a place that I would visit again. This meal was not worth the $125 I spent for two. I have no idea how this place has a 4.6 rating on Google. read more

What a disappointment. None of my food was prepared as requested. Asked for salad dressing on the side, but it was on the salad. Ordered a filet medium and it was so over cooked, it was like shoe leather. It wasn't cheap, so I sent it back. The replacement steak was so raw, it was purple inside and dripping blood onto the plate. Gave up on a filet and ordered salmon instead. Was shown on menu as being accompanied by rice pilaf, which was just a lame pile of white rice. The server was MIA each time we needed something, which made the experience that much worse. A guy who I guess was the owner came over as we were leaving and acknowledged that my meal/experience was terrible and only said, "Mea Culpa." Considering that I went to dinner with friends, but ended up eating my meal long after they were finished with their meals because my meal had to be sent back and recooked twice, he should have given some sort of credit on our bill, but he didn't. Parking is terrible too. Definitely will not return. read more

Came in for an after dinner drink and the bartender bobby was amazing!!!! I ordered a White Russian and he offered to make it a pint! Plus he added some little sizzle to it (frangelica). The carrot cake was absolutely incredible and an amazing pairing to my drink!!!!! Thank you Bobby for everything!!! This place has great food and great drinks!!! My partner and I came here to celebrate our anniversary. Based off of all the raving reviews we were so excited! The waitress was super nice and the atmosphere was great. However, we were a little disappointed with dinner. For the appetizers we had the bruschetta and fried mozzarella wedges. The Bruschetta was nothing special. The fried mozzarella wedges were a bit too greasy for my partners and I's liking. Our entrees, my partner got the Baked Penne and I got their skirt steak special. The penne was flavorful but the sauce was a bit too watery for our liking. My steak was great and made to order but the sauce for me was over powering with the wine taste. For dessert we got a cheesecake and carrot cake. The cheesecake was great except there was a bit too much sour cream for my liking. My partner got the carrot cake and was disappointed since it was hard as a rock. We spent with tip between $120-$150. Regardless of the dinner the service was top notch. read more

Food is overpriced, poorly seasoned, and just completely disappointing.

The food was OK, but there are definitely better Italian restaurants for the price point. The biggest reason behind my 2 star rating is the fact that when the bill came we realized (and not because they told us) that 3 of the entres were a significantly higher price than indicated on the menu. I didn't realize until after they had already taken my credit card. When I brought it to the attention of the hostess she was very flippant about it and said that the prices changed but the owner hasn't updated the menus. She pointed at something and said that they have a sign up about it. If there was a sign, I didn't see it, even with her attempting to point it out to us. The entire situation was ridiculous. You can't list prices on your menu and then randomly charge customers prices that are $10 more we enter without telling your customers simply because you don't want to pay to reprint your menus. Terrible. We won't be back. read more

Really wanted to like this local restaurant but am disappointed with the chef and kitchen. Appetizers to main courses were no better than a corner pizzeria. The breaded asparagus was awful and sautéed veal, in a gross heavy cream sauce, was worse. Positive side its a nice looking place and waitstaff was attentive. But won't be going back. read more

We moved to the area a year ago but didn't discover Matta Donna until April. We instantly fell in love with their pizza. But recently things have changed. (Note, our first visit was during Covid). The first strange thing was on a margarita pizza, instead of fresh mozzarella round slices, they put normal shredded mozzarella cheese in circles. I asked the next time i ordered it and they said oh maybe they were out it's def fresh this time. Nope. Now the last 3 times, the crust has been bland and spongy. The cheese SO greasy and yellow. And the pepperoni is just reg pepperoni piled in instead of the small thick pepperoni we fell in love with. Again I asked about the pepperoni when i ordered last time and they assured me it's 'back to normal'. Nope. I understand maybe suppliers are having difficulty but be upfront. Went last night for the first time. A party of four of us. Friendly atmosphere. We had a round of drinks in the bar area then moved to a table in the dining room. We started with a margarita pie that was thin and crispy. Absolutely delicious. All of our meals were flavorful. Everything from pizza, to salad, to entrees were so delicious. Went there on a Wednesday night, descent crowd. Food was good, service was just ok ( high school kid). They brought the soup same time as the dinner, kinda of odd. Watch the prices on the menu. I ordered pork arriabatta $24 on menu $29 on bill for 1 pork chop. I hate that, if you want to raise prices I get it(inflation) then change the menu even if it's with a piece of tape. What a wonderful place. We live in the same town and would drive by all the time and never stopped in. Finally went and found out we have been missing out on all these years. Everything from the service, to the food and wine was wonderful. We had the Claims casino and Sauteed shrimp for appetizers. The clams were tender and tasty and the sauce on the shrimp was delicious. For entries we had a couple of the pasta dishes (all very good) and the Lemon Sage Chicken (loved this). Can't wait to go back. read more

Matta Donna was quite an experience, from ambiance, location to the incredible food. This restaurant I believe has been in Boonton for many years & as I have lived near it my entire life, I decided to finally give it a try & I was pleasantly surprised with the deliciousness of the entrees that we enjoyed. First, the service was truly friendly & welcomed us in as locals who came there every weekend to dine. There were some locals there who were talking to the owners who eventually came to our table to ensure our dining experience was perfect which was a really nice touch I must say. Also, my biggest test is to ask the staff what they would recommend, I already had my eye on the steak topped with gorgonzola cheese but asked the waitress anyway - her passionate response was enough to sell it to a vegetarian!! All in all, highly recommend this restaurant, we saw small & large parties both dresses formal & casual - you walk in & seat yourself & enjoy the fairly priced DELICIOUS menu cannot wait to come back to try a few more highly recommended items on your menu - thanks again Matta Donna for a wonderful evening, see y'all very soon!! read more

I order the white pizza with their "sauted" onions, (not on menu that way), but amazingly delicious. You need to ask for xtra crispy otherwise the thin crust not really crispy. For take out, it could be hotter but still amazing. read more

This place is two miles from our house. We so wanted to like it. First we were seated and waited, and waited and waited for drink orders to be taken. We ordered. Appis and main courses. My wife was clear that she cannot eat flour or butter. Appis were ok. Drink was eh but good enough. Then the waitress brought my wife's dinner and asked "Will there be anything else?" Uhm yeah, my dinner maybe?? "Oh, I forgot" she said. My wife tastes her meal- mmmmm butter. BUT SHE WAS CLEAR... NO BUTTER. She went up to the counter. The waitress blamed the kitchen. My wife says we are leaving. The owner comes us and asks "Is everything okay?" My wife says no and explains what happened in brief. Does he ask any follow up questions? Nope. Does he try to make things right? Nope. Does he proceed to charge her for the appis and drink. YUP! He goes to the back and comes out a few seconds later. He says, "You know, let me reverse the charge." Ya think??? We were having a nice night and this ruined it. We left, went home and my wife made us something to eat. Things happen but this was a total fail. My time and money aren't worth risking this place again. As I wrote, we wanted to like the place. It looks nice inside and is close but we will give our business to places that pay attention and do the right thing. read more

Great Restaurant. The food was good, I had the Zuppa de clams and calamari, both were excellent. The service was outstanding and the decor is really nice. -------- August 19, 2016 It's still so awesome! We usually order take out, probably 2x/month or more for four years and I always order something not on their menu (fabulous, right?!). We have never had a bad meal until last week and it wasn't even THAT bad. It was just a mistake the chef made. I called to let the owner know and he was just so wonderful in handling the situation. I needed a pick me up that a good and quick appetizer and drink could solve. I had my usual Rescue Dog Tanq Martini and a giant plate of fried calamari. The martini was how can you go wrong great, but the extra special perfect fried calamari was again [had been a guest to dinner here before] was and is the standard I look for in fried calamari. Go to Matta Donna for it if nothing else. But I have to say, the dinner I had previously was also excellent, every part of it, though it is a while ago and I cannot remember specifics. My host, from Fredericksburg, VA was very very impressed that such a good meal was available in the middle of no-where NJ. LOL. My only thought was that an $11 Martini in Boonton was a bit much but $11 for perfection fried calamari was a good deal. read more

The lunch crowd doesn't appeared to have discovered this place yet, which has made it a favorite of mine for over a year. Seating is never a problem, the dark wood and cushioned bench seating along the walls muffles sound so I have always been able to hear everyone seated at my table. For lunch we normally get a couple of pies. A large thin crusted goat cheese pizza with carmalized onions is less than $20. The pie is more than adequate to feed three. Waitstaff is friendly, the atmosphere is relaxing. This is a good dining experience for the afternoon. I have never been here in the evening. read more

We were so pleasantly surprised by this new (to us) pick! We try to find a place that is between us and our family and picked this restaurant from an online search ..... The atmosphere, staff and food did not disappoint! The calamari with peppers, clam appetizer, dinners zuppe de Pesci, chicken Murphy with sausage and peppers and potato, veal parm .. This is a great new place. Their pork chop is amazing, and the pizza is pretty tasty too. Nice decor... has a good look with a lot of wood on the walls, but not as crammed in as a lot of restaurants can be. Service was excellent, beer was cold, food was tasty. Loved it! It's not just another pizza place like some people seem to think it is, it's a good restaurant in its own right. It's nicer than places like Roma and Top of the Park and if you're looking for somewhere new after eating at the Res for years, look no further. Definitely recommended. read more
