Dear Johnnie's, I'm sorry for only giving you 4 stars. I was young and naive. I didn't fully appreciate $2 draft beer and the occasional free sandwich that seems to somehow appear whenever I visit. As much as I thought I liked local dive bars, I'm not sure why I didn't put my stars where my mouth is. Johnnie's is a top notch local bar where you don't have to be a regular to feel like one. Went here at the recommendation of an acquaintance. Not friendly at all. Cash bar only. No food menu. Only regular beers on tap. The Yuengling tasted bad. It was only $2 but still. Definitely a dive bar. Not for visitors. Only locals allowed. I came for some good beer and good food for lunch. This place has neither. Had I known it was cash only before he poured the beer, I wouldn't have stayed. I felt obligated to use their atm in the back with the high $2.50 fee on a $20 withdrawal. My beer with the fee cost $4.50. I will not be back. There are better and friendlier places in Boonton. read more

If you love dive bars, this is the place for you. Super cheap drafts ($1.50) that can't be beat within a 10 mile radius. Lots of tvs and neon beer signs, a pool table ($1 or $2 per game), a shuffle board, game nights, and bar food from a toaster oven ranging from pizza to super pretzels to a bag of popcorn. After a week of staying in our new home to clean and unpack, we decided to walk the 0.9 miles hoping this place would live up to the hype. It exceeded our expectations! Great local no frills dive bar. This bar may look like an "old man" bar, but it's filled with young folks every night. I always have a blast when coming here and I do go often. It is cash only (atm on site) and they do have carry out goods. Great beers on tap and AMF jukebox app is available. Would def recommend to anyone looking for a chill dive bar. read more

A solid 3.5 (if Yelp gave 1/2 stars). I had to think long & hard about whether to give this a 3 or a 4 but in the end decided to stick with the rating system I use to keep myself consistent... Johnny's is a difficult place to review. The food & beer are average, the service is ok and the atmosphere is pretty much dive bar standard but there's something about the place. Can't put my finger on it - maybe it's the shuffle board, maybe it's just the other patrons. This place is not for everyone but we'll be back for sure! Drinks are strong and cheap. There won't be an umbrella in the drink nor should you ask. Everyone is shwaisted. You gotta know someone or be more waisted then them to play pool. Hard core drinkers, firemen, locals. You can follow the crowd of drunks there or from there when they close and they don't necessarily close on time. This is truly an old school corner bar. Third generation run. Rumored to sell the most draft beer in the State other than sports venues (i.e. The Meadowlands Stadium). I was brought there as a child by my dad to have a draft birch beer while he had a tall, cold one. (Probably illegal now.) Now, I stop there with my 21 year old. I have always felt welcome whether in jeans or a suit. When my family visits from out of state, we all have to go to Steinhauser's (Johnny's). Shot and beer joint? Sure! What an absolutely awful atmosphere. The drinks are cheap but the staff has such an attitude problem. My friend walked out the "wrong" door and had a bouncer jump down his throat calling him a "fucking moron". Our party of twelve walked out. If you want to be abused and disrespected then by all means give them your money. If you have a brain in your head, avoid this place like the plague. This is a five star dive bar. It does not pretend to be anything more than a dive bar and it succeeds wildly. Don't expect great food, don't expect fancy drinks. Tuesday's and Thursday's $1 Bud Light or Coors Light depending on which night, bar pies $5 (delicious), burgers, soft pretzels, fun and friendly atmosphere. And also one of the only regulation sized shuffle board tables in New Jersey!
