First off, I thought this WASN'T going to be another pizza place in Boonton. It is the 9th Italian Restaurant in 2.5 square miles. I heard rumors it would be a French place or Gastropub. But, alas... Formerly Eduardo's Pizza, it strives for "ambiance," but is crowded and partitioned strangely with an ultra-bright foyer. They haven't hired anyone to run the front so the owners are frantically seating people and handing out the stained paper menus. (They're very friendly!) Our waiter was nice and quick but had no facial expressions. He commented on how much we ate (A LOT! we were starving!) and mentioned that guys like beef and ladies like chicken. This is only funny because my husband ordered chicken. He brought us bread that was very fresh and good but COLD. Why was that bread so cold? The food was fresh and flavorful if unimaginative. The wine pour is VERY generous on the wines by the glass. I would humbly advise this restaurant on a few things: Keep the generous wine pouring even if you have to limit the selections by the glass. There are too many BYOBs around for you to get chintzy. Evidently there is a trial period on the menu (hence the home-printed paper menus.) Please consider a seasonal, revolving menu or more exotic fare. Fried Calamari is available, I think, even at Wal-Mart in Boonton, so please go a (slightly) different route than EVERY other place. If this becomes another local pizzeria/taverna, I would say if you can't get into Top of the Park or the Reservoir, its an acceptable alternative. read more

Excellent pizza IF and only IF you order the "special" thin crust that comes with one kind of pie. But if you ask, you can get this crust with any topping or combination of toppings. It is an excellent medium-thin pizza. Salads are OK. And they have beer! read more

Great bar and the owner is a great guy who only wants you to have a great experience every time your in his restaurant. I like the bar area and the food is very good and fresh. The steaks are good and his pasta's and main courses are upscale and presented very well. Nice salads and a decent atmosphere. Atmosphere is nice but overpriced. $17 for a plate of ravioli? Plus they charge for drink refills. That's like getting your pocket picked. Also the eggplant rollatini was tasty but mushy. read more

Was here recently with friends with whom we have eaten here before. This time around though the waiter was very nice, service was slow, and the place was less than 1/2 full. My entrée was bland (grilled calamari with broccoli rabe) and barely grilled. I had to heavily salt it to give it flavor. I could have complained but I am a very slow eater and everyone else was served and I did not want to have to wait. It just left me flat and unimpressed this time. In the past i have some outrageous meals here. I am willing to give it another shot, as maybe it was just an off day.....sure hope so as I was a big fan in the past. read more

Had a great meal here. some good old fashioned apps, stuffed squid, beet salad w/bleu cheese chunks, and entrees of paparadelle with crumbled sausage and a 10" white pizza with onions garlic spinach and prosciutto. Great waiter/bartender and a nice appeal with the atmosphere at the bar. Will be putting this on the regular stop list. read more

The food was awesome. Had the fried olives which were absolutely delicious!! Our dinners were smallish but I kind of like being able to finish. Stuffed shrimp was awesome. So was the calamari and the sliced angus beef and the breaded and fried asparagus. Nice atmosphere ..good service. Leave the kids at home, it's a terrific place for adults to go without having screaming children.. This place will definitely become one of our regular weekly spots!! read more

I love this place! They manage to maintain a relaxing atmosphere despite being insanely busy. The food is amazing. The menu is unique, and they're very accommodating when it comes to substitutions and changes to particular dishes. It had been too long since our last visit to Matta Donna and we will be back soon! So impressed they remembered exactly how my husband likes his martini ! Both the food and service was divine ! We started with the goat cheese and carmelized onion pizza which they gladly added arugula to. The chicken balsamic special with sausage was excellent and my entree salad with grilled shrimp was so satisfying. We were full but couldn't resist the dessert menu handmade by their pastry chef , a French culinary institute graduate. A few of the reviews listed puzzled me. Maybe the place has changed, but here is my take: I thought I was walking into a formal restaurant and when the doors opened, it was more of a cozy comfy type of a place. Nicely remodeled and very casual. A full bar with a big screen TV with the game on. We sat at a bar table and were served immediately. A couple people waited on us, one who seemed like the owner/manager. The menu was diverse, with a number of modernized italian dishes as well as pizza. I had mushrooms stuffed with chicken, feta, and spinach (no carb) and they were heavenly. We shared a roasted beet salad that was very yummy, and my main course was an invention - I asked a few questions and before I knew it they were designing my meal - calamari, shrimp, broccoli rabe sauted in garlic/butter. It was superb - including 5 or 6 jumbo or colossal shrimp. Desserts are all baked on the premises, but we were so full. I would give this 5 stars but the definition was the absolute best. I loved the place and might be my new favorite restaurant. Lastly I'll say that their prices are very reasonable. You can easily find a meal under 20 that you will be pleased with and their long list of specials also impressed us. read more

My husband and I had a dinner date here last Saturday night and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I had the fettuccine in truffle oil and my husband had the pork chop special. We then headed to the bar for a nightcap and talked for a while longer. The entire atmosphere was perfect for one on one conversation even though it was a packed house that night. read more

Atmosphere was nice. Floors didn't match the setting of this restaurant. Calamari was pretty good. I had the salmon, tasted good till I cut into the middle was it was pink, very pink. They offered me another dish I refused. My husbands green beans were also raw, and his steak did not come out medium as he had ordered. To make matters worse the waitress said that they were having a problem with the freezer making the fish too cold and therefor the fish cooked on the outside and not inside. So that also means fish wasn't fresh. But I will give them a try once again. read more

I went there for lunch last year & was very impressed. It took a while, but it was well worth it. Then took another couple for dinner & was very disappointed. My pasta was swimming in some creamy vodka type sauce that wasn't even listed on the menu. Went back last week to take a client out for lunch only to find they are no longer open for lunch!! My friend and I had dinner at Matta Donna's last night for the first time. We typically meet up in Morristown, but thought we would give Boonton a try since it was a half way point for us to meet. We both thought the service at this restaurant was great. The staff was very attentive without appearing too pushy. I had the Shrimp Fradiavlo and my friend ordered the Veal with Artichokes. Both meals were excellent and we wiped our plates clean. When it came to ordering dessert, our waiter (who was the son of the owner) listed off a bunch of options from memory. When I asked about the blackberry/rasberry tart, he mentioned that his mom made the tarts this morning and were fabulous. He then offered to have me ask him mom, who happened to be at a table by the bar, what she recommended for dessert. I of course hopped right over and she advised that the blackberries/rasberries were just purchased from a local market that morning and that she would recommend the tart for that reason. Well, we ordered the fruit tart and thought it was one of the lightest and tastiest tarts we've ever had! Barbara handed us her business card and asked us to call anytime if we wanted to order a particular dessert from her directly. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Matta Donna and promised the staff that we would definitely be back!!! read more

Great service, excellent Rib Eye steak, eggplant rolletini is thinly cut and properly prepared, oven roasted mussels, thin pizza, juicy pork chop and to top it off, really good deserts always made by one of the owners. I am in the hospitality field and although not perfect, I struggle to find something that would keep me from coming back over and over. read more

I always pick up food to go, but the staff is always great and my food is always ready very quickly. Their pizza is the best in town, and their meatball and chicken parm is fabulous! The food is a little pricey, but the pizza is actually really well priced and cheaper than other places around the area (and it's WAY better). read more

Just left Matta Donna on a Saturday night and have to say it was the worst service I have ever had. We have been there several times before and enjoyed the restaurant. Our server brought white wine when we asked for champagne. Then I ordered shrimp fradiavalo and got shrimp farfalle. And then the server dumped 2 drinks on myself and my wife and the table and proceeded to crawl on his hands and knees with table napkins cleaning it up.Then a woman stopped over and apologized for the mess and never offered us anything for the inconvenience. Then while still eating our entrees the server stopped and asked if we would like dessert. Finally the real fun started when the bill arrived and it was over $220 for 4 people. We reluctantly paid and tipped the server $40. You would think he would stop and say thanks but no.I have never wrote a review online like this but the experience was so bad I had to do something to vent.needless to say I will never be setting foot in this place again! read more
