Finally get the try this place again. Last time there was for lunch with my group of coworker and as I ordered the bento box, there was nothing really special to talk about. I don't know why this sushi place never come across my mind for the last 2 years and all in a sudden when I was reading yelp and looking for a sushi place. This place pop up and I know it's time for me to give a try! I have to say it was a very pleasant experience. Not many sushi restaurants in Vallejo provide this quality of sushi. I love they have many choices on their menu. So many to try so I have to return for second time in a week. I will definitely come back for more. This place is so good! My colleagues introduced me to this place after working nearby. First time we ordered takeout, I ordered the Koja Chiraishi. It had chef's choice sashimi, ebi, tamago, and salmon roe. It was SO GOOD!! Everything was so fresh, but what amazed me was the rice. I lived in Japan for over 10 years so I know what good sushi rice taste like. To top it off, it had salmon roe, which definitely hit the spot! Then, after a week, I was working in the area again, so you know i had to order something here for lunch. I ended up trying their katsaramuki roll (fresh fish wrapped in cucumber. It was light and very good. Fish was super fresh again. This place is definitely a good place to get fresh and authentic sushi. Can't wait to try other items soon! read more

Very disappointed. Will not be back. This has been my favorite place since long before COVID. Post COVID they stopped doing happy hour and no longer serve a kids menu. We continued to come back regardless. Today they refused to add cucumber to an avocado maki roll because they were "too busy". This is all my kids eat! Great little sushi joint in Vallejo! This place has become our regular spot when we're craving sushi. All the rolls we've tried were super fresh and had great flavor. The rolls themselves are a good size and reasonably priced. So far our fav have been the Bay Bridge roll, Tuna Tower, and Spider roll. They have a pretty extensive list of rolls as well as more traditional items like nigiri, sashimi, and also cooked entrees. We enjoy sitting at the bar and chatting with the sushi chefs. I've always wanted to try this sushi spot and after reading the reviews I decided to give it a shot! I ordered through Doordash, and they were able to make it within 10-15 mins. I ordered the assorted nigiri and the pink lady roll. The assorted nigiri was good, I wish they had the names of the fish included in the menu. The pink lady roll was also nice for my parents since they don't really like raw fish and the roll didn't have that inside. I wish they gave more ginger and wasabi with our takeout orders so if you love to eat those, make sure to add it in the notes! Made a reservation for 7 pm and was told that they would call us if we didn't show by 7. Got there a couple minutes prior and was not greeted for 10 minutes. Not one word of acknowledgment. Told them we had a reservation and the waitress said she would get the table set up. It took 1 hour for our rolls to come out, and another 45 for the rest of our rolls to trickle out. We were there long enough to see people come, dine, and leave. Heck, we were there long enough to watch the dinner time rush come and go. Rolls were good. But dinner was spread out over 2 hours. No one came out to check on us. Only to give us the rolls. We were reluctant to add to our order because we didn't want to have to wait an hour for them. It would have been nice to have been acknowledged that we were made to wait by the manager but he didn't want to come out to talk to us. Waitress was very apologetic. We tipped regardless because we always feel bad when it's not the waitresses fault. Shucks, looks like we have to go out of town for good sushi. Like Totto in Fairfield. Management needs to improve before we go back. But then, we'll not be going back any time soon. read more

Through all the changes over the years since they first opened, I have never had a bad meal at Matsuri. Everything has always been fresh, well-made, and tremendously flavorful. The staff is always friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is pleasant and mellow. The only caveat is that I wish they would use the other half of the property--which has a pleasant view of the lagoon and the Sonoma wetlands instead of a view of the parking lot--as the main dining area. But instead they made that area an events and party facility. This seems like a pity to me, but whatever. I still love Matsuri's food and will always be an enthusiastic regular. I should add that I've brought many friends here, and they always loved it too. Last note: my favorite will probably always be the epic Pink Lady roll, but honestly, everything I've ever ordered here was terrific. read more

Tried for the first time, and I ordered lunch bento box with salmon teriyaki and sashimi. The portion really is new to me. The piece of salmon is small imo. The teriyaki sauce was super salty, good thing it didnt cover, so I didnt need to eat all that salt. The ginger was not good at all, there was still skin at the tip and was dry. Matsuri has been my go to sushi spot for the past few years. I am not sure if there has been a change in ownership, because I had the worst experience last night. First, we walked in and they were super busy and we had to wait about 30 minutes, which is understandable. Once we were seated we waited another 30 minutes for someone to take our order and only was helped because I flagged someone down. Then we placed our order and 2 of the 3 appetizers came out rather quickly. The 3rd appetizer came out after the main course and it wasn't what I expected. We all looked at the appetizer and I could tell that it was going to go to waste since we all had started our dinner and the fact it was a mountain of tuna topped on top of seaweed salad. I was the last person to get my dinner, so when my dinner was brought over I sent back the undesirable appetizer. Within 5 minutes, a woman who appeared to be in charge came over and started to berate me for sending the appetizer back. I was in shock that the person in charge would speak to a customer in that way. She was aggressive and told me that she was charging me for the appetizer. At first I told her that was fine and I would not come back if that was the case. Then I calmly told her to please stop and let me enjoy my meal. At this point I am embarrassed and felt like the whole restaurant could hear what happened. I did my best to finish my meal when the same woman came back to antagonize me! I could not believe it! She came back to fight with me! Luckily I have done a lot of personal work on grounding and not reacting. I did not say a word to her and just looked at her as she continued to be combative. My husband warned me that their service and food quality is not what it used to be. I wanted to see for myself. I was charged $12.95 for the appetizer and in turn I did not leave the $25 tip that I would normally leave based on my experience. I walked out of there feeling like what just happened!?! Upon arrival on a Sunday night, there was a family ahead of us waiting to be seated; found out later they waited for 10-minutes before being acknowledged. My party of 2 was not greeted or acknowledged by either of the two servers working last night. Another family walked in and still no acknowledgement. We all stood there in the doorway for over 5-minutes, only to have a waitress finally take our names, party size, then leave to work on other things; there were empty tables and neither waitress could connect the dots and match an empty table to a waiting party. These girls lacked training and common sense. My party of two walked out, following the family that arrived after us. What a disappointment and definitely not a good experience. Came to this restaurant with my husband about a month ago and had a great experience. My favorite was the "chef special". Went back last week on Tuesday walked in at 830 and the ladies in the front said no more walk in so I asked if I could place my order to go. She went to ask the "chef" and he said no more orders at all. Okay... but you close at 9pm not 830. I decided to try again today since I have been craving the chef special since it was delicious. Called at 8 placed my order for 2 chef special and 2 gyoza. She said my total was $56. Great. As I'm driving there the lady who I placed my order with calls me and says the chef special is DINE IN ONLY and if I want to take it go to the "Chef" wants to know how much I'm WILLING TO PAY FOR IT? she said anywhere from $30-$50 PER ROLL. I'm sorry WHAT?!! You want me to make an offer so I can take the roll home? That is SO RIDICULOUS! I told the young lady just to cancel my entire order. I'm not gonna make you an offer so I can eat my sushi at home. Customer service is definitely awful. Will never go back and will tell friends about it. I will drive a few more miles to Yo Sushi. Sometimes, I cannot help my sushi obsession, but the last time it hit, I was far away from my favorite sushi spot. So, I remembered I ate at Matsuri many years ago, and decided to give it another try. Food came reasonably fast, so that was good. I ordered vegetable tempura, and the batter was nice and crunchy. The broth that came with it was pretty tasty (unlike most of the other ones I have tried, that taste like watered down soy sauce), and noticed it was made with dashi, which makes a world of difference in flavor. It was also a little bit sweet, which was unexpected, but I liked it. I also ordered a salmon sushi, and it was nice, fresh, and in good sized rolls. They don't accept cash at this restaurant, so be prepared to pay with a card. Once done, the waitress came with an IPad with the card attachment, and did the checkout smoothly and quickly. Never dining here again! This was my second time coming here and it will probably be my last. What brought me back was the food but the service was worse than before. The night was off to a bad start when a guest ran in front of me and my guest and let the door slam in our faces. I don't know why there are so many negative reviews. After going to several sushi spots in the bay, we always come back to this one. The only reason why it isn't in our top spot is because the place near my partner's home has a delicious omakase at an affordable price. My partner and I religiously order the 30 piece sashimi. Had no idea about this Sushi gem in Vallejo. When you are craving your favorite you figure things out: I checked yelp as that is my go to whenever I'm unsure of my restaurant options in the area and was intrigued by the photos of beautiful sushi rolls AND Happy hour from 4:30 to 6. The offering of 4 and 6 dollar plates was a deal maker. We arrived at 5 the bar was pretty full the Chef was busy rolling up, Sushi. We were promptly seated at a table. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable even though she appeared to be young. Ice cold water with lemon was brought to us right away . We were ready to order and she was ready to take our order. Life was good! We decided on the Dragonfly because it contained all the things I require in a roll-unagi,crab,shrimp tempura,avocado,cucumber and roe. It was a decent roll. There were a few pieces in the roll that either did not have unagi on top (look closely at photo) or the shrimp tempura was missing or only had the crust no shrimp. A pet peeve for me with sushi is if it doesn't hold its shape. This fell apart horribly and the rice seemed to be old. As a matter of fact I felt that way about the shrimp used to make the roll as well. The spider roll was about the same with the fall apart issues and old rice. Gyoza reminded me of the frozen you can buy at the supermarket. The dipping sauce for the rolls was flavorless I had to add soy and ask for teriyaki to doctor it up. The tempura fries were hot and delicious. The Fried tofu wasn't quite what I expected but I wont say it was bad. I would like to highlight the water and I'm not being sarcastic. Some restaurants have horrible tasting water. The water here was clean filtered water, no tap water taste at all . I literally drank 3 glasses. So sad, I complete understand the pandemic hit the restaurants very bad, but my experience here was terrible. There was a large party of 10ppl and perhaps 2 more tables occupied, the waitress took a few minutes to see us and offer a seat close to the bar, 2 sushi chefs, one with no mask at all, about 5 waitresses , they took around 5 minutes to serve us some waters ginger and wasabi in the table. After 20 minutes when we almost decided to leave a American waitress finally stopped and took the order, another 10 minutes to give us the drinks and other 15 someone run my order, my wife dinner took another 15 minutes more, after that, nobody asked if we need something else. Bento box was so simple, my wife's sushi roll was good. If I'd decide to try again, maybe it'll will be To go! read more
