Gosh I hate to do this. The owners seem so nice. When we walked in and were the only two people, that should have been a red flag. I had read most of the reviews on Yelp. We all have different tastes. A lot of people really like this restaurant, comparing it to San Francisco Chinese food in China town. Our experience was not good. Upon my better judgment, I ordered the Pot Stickers. Reviews had said too much dough, no flavor in the filling. Well, that is absolutely true and the oil tasted off. I ate one, my husband at two. There were six. I ordered the Basil Chicken only to be told they were out of Basil. I changed it to Garlic Chicken. I asked what the House Special Beef was. The owner told me it was Spicy Beef with Bok Choy. I asked if we could have extra veggies in it. She said yes. And finally the BBQ Pork Fried Rice. Food came, they looked exactly the same except one was beef and one was pork. They tasted exactly the same and the beef had no heat. The rice even tasted like the other two dishes. It all was more like a bland brown gravy instead of tasting like Chinese food. When my husband and I go out to Chinese Food, we never have leftovers. We didn't want to offend them so we got ToGo boxes. When we got home, it all went straight into the trash. My husband had a Diet Pepsi with dinner, I had my own water. With tip it was over $70.00. The poor quality of styrofoam containers was evident as both top and bottom of the containers melted into the food. I called and the owner told me that everyone in the area uses the same styrofoam containers. She didn't apologize for the food getting contaminated with the melted plastic. I'd give it 4 stars for the affordability and overall quality and taste of the food. We came in on a Saturday around 2PM and were unsure if they were offering dine in. The lady behind the counter said yes and handed us two takeout menus. We sat and looked over the menus and when ready had to go up to the booth to order, where I was also rung up at the time of ordering. We ordered two lunch specials: mongolian beef with chow mein, general chicken with fried rice, and an order of potstickers. The potstickers came out quickly but were pretty bland inside and the wrappers were really thick (we didn't even finish one whole one). The lunch specials we ordered came out soon after in to- boxes. I found it odd that the mongolian beef was sauteed with zucchini and carrots as I'm used to it being an onion forward dish. It still tasted good, just different than I expected. Absolutely awful and uncomfortable experience. We ordered crispy noodle beef, with gravy. The noodles are extra thick and don't soften well. We couldn't even eat the noodles with the cheap plastic fork. We were served on cheap paper plates with thin plastic forks. We should have been served on real plates with metal utensils and a spoon! The wonton puffs have nothing in them but like 2 shreds of cheddar cheese. Disgusting. They definitely don't want you dining in and make it as unpleasant as possible, hoping you will leave. Re my to go orders, the lady cashier cooked the pork wonton soup and the male cook did the sweet and sour pork. The sweet and sour pork is a bit on the really sweet and quite very sour side. But I was satisfied because it was a considerable portion and the meat inside was juicy, not dry and old. The wonton soup has very soggy Napa cabbage. At first I was impressed because the container seemed like it has many wontons in it. But my happiness turned into major disappointment because the soup tastes nothing beyond chicken powder seasoning. The meat in the wonton is quite red and scary, too. Cantonese food is difficult to find in Vallejo because many restaurants offer Mandarin dishes. Some people don't notice the difference, but I do since I'm first generation Chinese. Combo Express has changed ownership recently; we don't care for the frozen Costco-like pot stickers. They used to be hand made but no longer. China Wok isn't too bad, but it's still a trek from Glen Cove. Then, my husband decided to give Kwongnan a try. The staff told him that they're Cantonese, plus make the pot stickers by hand. We went with one order of pot stickers and the combination dinner for two. With a variety, we'd be able to tell if we liked the food or not. Well, they passed the litmus test. Everything was hot and savory. The only downside was the portions are much smaller than some places. It's a little hole-in-the-wall, yet we enjoy supporting small, local businesses. I moved to Vallejo in the beginning of 2019 and have only eaten a few of the Chinese spots out here. The couple that I have tried were all decent but nothing special or beyond just okay. With that being said let me just simply say that Kwongnan cooks up some really good dishes! We ordered the War(they call it house special I think) Won ton soup, general tso chicken, shrimp chow fun, salt and pepper pork, and a crab Rangoon appetizer. Everything was cooked great and every dish tasted good or even better. Now let me get to the cold hard truth about this place. This place is not listed on Uber eats or any other app like that. With this place having the best overall in Vallejo area (out of 4 other locations) you would think that the service and the way the business is ran would be matching in some way... WRONG. Lol. The lady and old man who are always there tag teaming the place are probably the owners and just don't have it in them to tighten up business practices. I won't mention all the bad cuz I'm still coming back for the food I'm just calling before to make sure they CHOOSE TO ACCEPT CARDS the day you go because I ordered two days in a row and second day I show up to pay and pick up lady tells me in person (instead over the phone when she took my order down and asked me literally four times did I want to add anything smh) that the card machine is down today like I didn't just pay with my card 17hours ago. Luckily, they spend their energy making sure the food is on point! Which is crazy because I've read reviews that the old owners had better food here!? Anyways, if you ain't all boujee bout them hood gems with the good food and ugly place this will definitely be a winner for you! But if you expect to bring your family in for a nice meal with ambience to match just step back and take a look at the outside of the restaurant lol it's a clear indication of what the inside is like. Asked if Duck was fresh. Liars. Its not. I know what's fresh duck taste like why she had to lie is unheard of, it was horrendous, dried out salty as hec. Pricey over here too, I normally get fresh cooked whole duck for 18.00 , this place charged me 15.00 for half a dehydrated duck that's was awful. Fried rice was alright but never going here again. I ordered the garlic noodles with prawns, honey walnut prawns, vegetable fried rice, fried prawns and veggie egg rolls ($45- free 3 pc egg roll with order). For the price, the food is good although my favorite was the fried prawns.
