I came here for lunch today at 1:30 pm, the waitress ignored me when I came in. The place was almost empty. The person behind the bar told me to sit at a table. I ordered a 2 piece bento box, oysters katsu, normally 5-6 pieces, today 2 pieces. Sesame chicken was ok. At 2:15 pm the cook said that they were closed and he wanted to go home. I told him that I would be done in 5 minutes, he just glared at me. I asked if he would like me to take it to go, he said yes and brought me a to go box. I packed it up and left. I felt like I was really disturbing them just by coming in for lunch. I have been going here for almost 20 years and use to really enjoy the place. But now I just feel like a nuisance coming in here. We dined on a Thursday night for 2 people. Place was half empty when we were seated. Then a runner gave us our table setting. The server took our order and we got 3 rolls. To our surprise, someone else brought our order. We never got a check-in with on our order again. So we had to flag anyone that would actually give any eye contact. We enjoyed the matsuri roll that we wanted another other. So, the same person (male) came to our table after we got his attention and asked him to let our server know we would like another roll. My tea by the way was never topped off. We were offered for some more water at least by the runner. We waited another 10 minutes and I had a suspicion our last roll order was not coming. We also asked for more wasabi and ginger and our soy sauce bottle was now empty. My boyfriend finally got up to the reception counter and asked for our order. Voila, we were right. The order was never placed for our last roll. My boyfriend just paid the bill and we left. The gentleman that was to pass on our order literally admitted "Oh, I forgot". The service was the worst from the many times we dined at Matsuri. Server never checked on us after our first interaction. It's too bad, we like the food here. When we walked in the restaurant we thought it was going to be an experience. It wasn't, my time here was not great, not bad either but I was honestly disappointed with the quality of their food. I ordered an Aji Nigiri and it broke as soon as I touched it (no photo because it was eaten quickly) the addition of grated ginger on top did add to the taste but the fish was fresh enough out of the fridge. Meaning quality was good but not excellent. Service was nice but does not show up too much to refill water, especially on a hot summer day here in Vallejo. The place was nice though, I like the design of the place. I saw a flaming sushi roll being served. Anyways, try it if you like it is still a decent place to grab sushi. They are closed on Mondays FYI so plan around that. We ALWAYS order the Pink Lady roll, and also love the Cinco de Mayo, Dynamite, and Flaming Dragon. Everything on their menu is delicious! This is my family's go-to sushi spot when I am in town. I've grown up going to this spot and it's my parents' favorite. There are some things that are undeniable- they have the best bento boxes (the Saba shioyaki and chicken teriyaki are particular tasty) and the Udon is executed deliciously. The flavors are spot on! I usually get the 3 combo bento- salmon shioyaki, chicken teriyaki and sake sashimi- it comes with miso soup, salad and rice. The sushi is hit or miss with me and the prices are pretty high (for Vallejo) and rival the usual Oakland/Walnut Creek prices. There are a few that I've enjoyed like the unagi hamachi roll, pink lady, bay roll but there are some that don't quite live up to what it's costing. I may have to try more items- I'm sure I'll forever be a Matsuri girl. read more

We used to eat here constantly when they had a Benicia location. That has now closed so we thought we'd try their Vallejo restaurant. When we arrived discovered a note on the door, credit card only, no cash. I don't like to use credit cards much, try and pay with cash as much as possible. But, no, asked the waitress if they'd take cash and she shook her head, nope. I always thought U.S. currency was an acceptable medium of exchange. I had a hankering for some sashimi for lunch and was in the neighborhood. I ordered the Chisami dish with just rice. Generous cut. All vey fresh and delicious. My preference for dessert at a Sushi Restaurant is a salmon skin hand roll. There was very good. Nice and crispy skin with a nice sweet sauce on it. The latter two are no longer around - that's how old I am. haha So I really wasn't exposed to Japanese food or sushi, until I was an adult. My brother ordered the sushi bento box with chicken teriyaki and beef bulgogi, the kids ordered chicken katsu, and my brother's girlfriend and I shared 4 sushi rolls- warriors, bay bridge, spicy A's roll, and crab shark. Everything was delicious! My favorites were the spicy A's and crab shark. My brother enjoyed his bento box and the kids loved their katsu. The portions were also generous. The food is outstanding, great place best in the city by far but the service is rather awful. I feel bad for the owner seeing as it's a rather common complaint among patrons from getting a check to organized seating the service is in dire need of improvement. Having waited 30min was told to sit at the bar, so I did. I was then asked to leave the bar and told my name would go onto a list. Of course, that list was not known to me before waiting for 30min or was it any consideration to the staff whom did not seem to care very much. Finally get the try this place again. Last time there was for lunch with my group of coworker and as I ordered the bento box, there was nothing really special to talk about. I don't know why this sushi place never come across my mind for the last 2 years and all in a sudden when I was reading yelp and looking for a sushi place. This place pop up and I know it's time for me to give a try! I have to say it was a very pleasant experience. Not many sushi restaurants in Vallejo provide this quality of sushi. This place is so good! My colleagues introduced me to this place after working nearby. First time we ordered takeout, I ordered the Koja Chiraishi. It had chef's choice sashimi, ebi, tamago, and salmon roe. It was SO GOOD!! Everything was so fresh, but what amazed me was the rice. I lived in Japan for over 10 years so I know what good sushi rice taste like. To top it off, it had salmon roe, which definitely hit the spot! Then, after a week, I was working in the area again, so you know i had to order something here for lunch. I ended up trying their katsaramuki roll (fresh fish wrapped in cucumber.
