Great service, beautiful ambience. I've been here years ago when they first opened, at the time I was more into specialty rolls, and the specialty rolls are good. Ankimo is still delicious, but when it comes to the nigiri, it definitely falls short. Rice is really overcooked. Uni - from Santa Barbara was NOT good, I almost threw up. And I'm an uni lover, it has that lower grade quality and flavor. Scallop tastes fresh and clean Ikura okay, too much rice ratio Amaebi was actually really good, but the head was served to me somewhat lukewarm Blue fin tuna sampler was probably my favorite, but the rice quality kind if ruined it, overcooked and not well portioned for the fish, and also a little too big for one bite. Negihama roll was good, simple, again rice is overcooked and just doesn't taste right California roll and crunchy lizard, my son enjoyed both Spicy tuna roll, did not like it, the tuna itself was too blended so it had really no fish texture, these kinds of rolls tastes better when the fish its chopped by hand. Was not spicy at all, asked for habanero sauce and they brought me a sweet habanero sauce on a plate. I just hate when there's that much sweetness on something spicy (tearssss) Anywho I was expecting a nice dinner with great sushi, but it's definitely a place with casual quality sushi components. I actually skipped Kura to come here, and I would've probably had the same experience there foodwise. Service from front to dining room, to leaving was excellent. Really great team they have working together. Beautiful ambience, nice intimate setting. I personally do not recommend any nigiri style sushi here, due to the quality of rice. But I can say if you order sashimi, you can get a decent meal sashimi style. Also wish they had better champagne by the glass options, a dry bubble would be nice, I decided on sake, and did not like the sohomare much, it had a bitter aftertaste, dassai 45 nigori was good, a little too sweet but I enjoy dassais. Beautiful space for a range of occasions. The food was good, but the standard menu for whichever parent company owns Matsu and Momiji -- nothing unique but all well done. We had the gyoza (which was vegan friendly), spicy tuna roll (where the tuna is mashed instead of whole and sliced) and an array of sushi/sashimi. The interior is beautiful, ornate, and bright -- there are fountains and a cool structure in the middle of the restaurant. The bar is more dim and romantic of a setting. Service was quick and staff was very polite. There is generally plenty of parking available, but not on event days as the stadiums are very nearby. read more

But at Matsu, the casual bar with an outdoor patio that's easy for people watching has something going for it here. Located next to Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park, you'll find 12s and M's fans here before or after a game. Get here early on game day as this place gets packed, especially for the happy hour deals, which I highly recommend you check out. The bar is chill, with sports playing on the tube and friendly staff. The happy hour menu features a lot of sushi, hot entrees, appetizers and drinks at a discounted rate. I'd recommend coming with a group and sharing because you'll want to take advantage of the happy hour offerings. While Mariners fans streamed steadily to the baseball field outside, I was inside the sparsely populated dining room filling my belly with the best sushi Seattle offered. Yes, I was aware history was taking place nearby but I was grateful for this rare intimacy and quiet atmosphere for what I imagine is normally a busy restaurant as it was superb. My friend and I went here during the happiest of hours so we were able to order some from the happy hour menu as well from the normal menu. Everything was fabulous. The sushi set was amazing - perfect rice and perfect fish. The agedashi tofu was soft, savory, pillows of delight. The jalapeño yellowtail was also very good tho I was biased and thinking of another restaurant. The geisha roll was stellar - it was this explosion of flavor with a bit of sweet from the mango, a bit of creaminess from the avocado, a bit of savory from the fish and the tobiko, and a whole lot of rolling heat. It didn't hit me hard but it wasn't something I could eat with abandon. The roll demanded to be savored otherwise the heat would build up. I had fabulous cocktails here too. The bartender had a mostly full bar and was able to make a variety of classics as well as specialties like the Atari Sunset. It was grand. Our waitress was wonderful as well. She was thoughtful, passionate, and really ensured we had a good evening. She accommodated us ordering plate by plate as we weren't sure how much we could or would want to eat. Found this spot via Yelp on our last day in Seattle and would highly recommend their happy hour from 4-5:50pm DAILY and late night in the lounge 9-close. Our bartender was very personable, friendly and even ran out at the end to chase me down because my spacey-self forgot my credit card and he knew I was flying back home after Matsu! All the sushi we had was solid, and a great deal on happy hour. I hate to sound like a brat.. but it's been hard for me to enjoy sushi in the states ever visiting Japan - but this was pretty good! I would definitely say it is on the classier and pricier side out of the three but the delicious rolls still stand true. We got so many that I can't even remember but everything we tried was so good! Came with a big big dinner party after a work event. They were able to seat us together at the center of the restaurant. Tons of different izakaya and sushi options on the menu! I also enjoyed their zero proof mocktail option! My favorite item was the uni shisho roll, and the very tender beef ribs. Food came out very quickly and the server was friendly and attentive to my food allergies. Matsu is one of the very few decent restaurants in Seattle that can accommodate large parties and does reservations. It has a very similar menu to Momiji and Umi (sister restaurants) with a bigger, more corporate feeling vibe. Service has always been great, and I end up here when I can't get a reservation at the other two on short notice. They also have a large bar area for happy hour, though you can get the happy hour menu at the regular tables as well. It's right by the stadium, so parking can be impossible if there's an event going on. read more

This may just be on our top 3 sushi locales in Seattle!! We stopped by late afternoon on a Saturday for Happy Hour and we're immediately wowed by the beautiful zen entrance and restaurant design, layout and decor; our evening proceeded with amazingly friendly service and accommodations. Dining included a superb and stuffed Seattle roll, hamachi charred collar with spring greens(a definite highlight), perfectly crispy Calamari with mixed greens and a delicious miso dressing(we ordered sweet chili, as proper), and a delicious hazy pale ale from local Maritime Brewing of their excellent local and big market selections.. parking can easily be a challenge, especially during events as the location is right in SoDo next to Lumen Field. All paid park per standard and inner stalls at $9 up to 2 hours and above. For Japanese food lovers, this little gem is definitely on my recommend list!! read more

This place has been on my list and I finally tried it and I was actually REALLY disappointed. Service was great, no complaints about that but this review is strictly based on the food. Apps - KFC was probably the best out of what we ordered. Nice crispy skin and sauce. Slightly spicy. They gave us wet wipes with it so that was really key because they were really messy to eat. Mushroom gyoza - we didn't expect it to be so soupy. It's listed under the pan fried section so we thought they would be... pan fried :/ It was really heavy on the shiitake and not so much enoki. It was a decent dish, just not what we expected Yellowtail kama - really dry and overcooked :( It wasn't soft or flaky at all. Omakase - we got the $40 which we thought was a good value for 11 pieces. However each fish tasted like it was previously frozen and had that texture like it was previously frozen.. just mushy and not silky :( More than half had a spicy garnish to it. I was looking at previous pictures of the omakase and it looks like our pieces looked extra skinny compared to others I've seen. Also my husband's omakase lacked the black tobiko that I had. Overall we were just reallllllly disappointed with the food. I wanted to like this place based on the other reviews I read. I know this place is probably known for their rolls, but if their actual fish is like this I don't expect their rolls to be better. Sorry :( I am super bummed. A+ for the service though! read more

My friend and I were looking for something to eat for dinner on a Wednesday night and stumbled upon Matsu. Matsu actually changed my friend's outlook on sushi and is now an avid sushi eater. We ordered Chicken Katsu as our appetizer, Shrimp Tempura for our side entree, and Chicken Yakisoba for our main entree. The chicken katsu wasnt crispy but the chicken was tender. Chicken Yakisoba was a bit too greasy on the vegetables. The sauce used kinda reminded me of sweet n sour chicken mixed in with a bit of orange. Shrimp Tempura sushi rolls were tiny. Even the shrimp tails were tiny. They gave us edamame as a side snack before our food arrived. Overall, I would like to come here again to try more. Parking wasnt too bad on a weekday as there is street parking available. You can also park in a parking garage across the street. Only problem is they close at 7 pm and it is hard to get into the garage unless you have an apartment garage key. read more

Matsu is hands the go to place for my family and I for a nice dinner out in Seattle. My husband and son love sushi, I love Asian food and we have an infant. The sushi is great quality with so many different plate, roll and set options. The hot food items are amazing with so much variety. Kamachi collar and spicy seafood ramen are my favorites. We have a young kid and infant so we eat early dinners and the HH is the best anywhere (Seattle or Eastside, which is where we live). The space is so large I don't feel cramped our scared by crowds coming here with my 4 month old. Service is top notch, friendly, warm and accomodating whenever we come. The interior is nice with great ambiance and restrooms super clean. Will be back next time in Seattle. read more

Newer sister restaurant to Umi and Momiji! I feel like their menu is pretty much the same as the other two (maybe some slight differences but overall from what I could tell very similar). They also have HH daily from 4-6pm. This location is in Pioneer Square very close to the stadium, but walking in lobby/check-in area feels very fancy. Similar vibe as Umi and Momiji but nicer. Would be a great date spot as well! I decided to check out this restaurant mainly because they have a larger outside seating patio area that's covered so we would be safe if it did end up raining. We did wish they had outdoor heat lamps or something since it got pretty chilly last night and our group was trying to be safer and eat outside. Since they're newer, it wasn't super packed (but then again it was a Tuesday night) so definitely a good substitute option if you're craving Umi or Momiji but don't want to deal with the crazy crowds or want to sit outside! read more

A lot of the sushi places in Seattle seem to have similar menus (i.e momiji, umi sake etc). Matsu's sushi menu was very similar to that of momiji's which included rolls like green decadence and lucky leprechaun and the veggie sushi sampler. Nonetheless matsu was super delicious. My friends were a particular fan of the mushroom gyoza, up to the point where we ordered two of the appetizers. Super enjoyable and easy to get reservations! The only thing is, matsu is located in a not so fun part of town (pioneer square) but the restaurant itself is very classy. read more

I'm a recent transplant to the Seattle area and I found restaurant Matsu with a quick Yelp search for sushi. It turned out to be a fantastic happy hour restaurant that starts their happy hour at 4 p.m. and doesn't finish until 7 p.m. in the bar. Due to the pandemic and social distancing rules, there are only 6 tables in the bar area that seat two to five people. There is also outdoor seating but it can get chilly. Their happy hour menu is fantastic! There are Sushi sets, sashimi, and hot dishes like tempura, ribs, fried oysters , and much more. The drink menu has different types of sake, whiskey and gin mixed cocktails, and wine by the glass or bottle. If you don't drive, they are only 5 minutes away from the nearest Light Link rail station. I love that this place has a daily happy hour and TVs to watch the game. As soon as you sit down, you are greeted with a bottle of cold water and a complimentary edamame appetizer. I like to start with cold appetizers and work my way up to hot entrees. This place seems very fancy as you walk through the door. I love how there are some traditional Japanese tables in the middle. There's full bar service to your left and the dining room to the right. Place was pretty busy when my friends and I were there but we were all pretty spread out. Food here was decent. It wasn't anything special. For the price I paid I honestly expected a lot more. First off walking into the restaurant you're greeted with what looks like a spa entrance with nice reflecting pond and floor to ceiling hardwood accents. The vibe is very homey yet classy. The service was a little lacking due to there being 2 servers on but the food was top notch. As from the photos we ordered quite a bit and all of it was amazing. Kama - a giant, freshly grilled yellowtail collar with garlic ponzu, served with dressed greens & ponzu. Probably my favorite kama in Seattle ​ Asari Miso - an umami seafood miso with manila clams, enoki mushroom, spinach, scallions. Highly recommend! Service today at the bar area was really poor. What was interesting though was when 4 of the bartenders friends walked in, the service for them was amazing. My advice is to treat all your customers as friends and you'll have more repeat customers. The food was the reason for the 3 stars and it would have been 5 stars if the service matched the food. I wish it was just me that experienced this, but the woman next to me was also not pleased with the lack of attention received from the bartender.
