I really appreciated the friendliness of the staff. Honestly I didn't know what to expect when I walked in. It's pay at the counter but other than that they bring everything to you and take good care of you. The food was delicious but they were out of sourdough so I had to order something I hadn't planned on but it was still really good. The little house that they turned into the restaurant is adorable and it sits so cutely in the Roosevelt neighborhood. I have been super excited to try this place, we've had it saved for months now on Instagram. However when we tried to go before it's a line out the door and down the sidewalk. So today, Friday, we both had the time to try it. Only two people ahead of us in line. The inside was a bit busy but there was seating inside and outside available. We attempted to order lunch but it was a tad too early and were instructed to order breakfast. Pros: The breakfast sandwich was really good, we both got one with bacon and avocado. I also got the golden espresso, which has turmeric and ginger, very delicious. The staff was also all very friendly. Cons: Speaking of coffee, we had to ask twice for his cafe de olla to be brought to the table, took about 20 minutes after mine arrived. Their take on cafe de olla is terrible. Tastes nothing like real cafe de olla. Not a good representation of this Mexican coffee. We had to ask for silverware due to the table not being ready ahead of time. Lastly, towards the end of our meal we were asked if we could move tables to the bar top due to being at capacity. Im not even sure they had another spot actually open for us to move to. A bit annoying so we just wrapped up and left. To be clear, we had not been there 90 minutes, I know there a ton of comments about the "unofficial 90 minute policy non-policy". It had maybe been an hour tops. I think if this place wasn't so insanely busy it would be more enjoyable, and we were looking forward to trying their lunch items. Its a nice spot, but to me feels more like they focus too much on the vibes than food and service. I got a breakfast Sammy and the bread was toasted but cold in the center like it was frozen and thawed. Had good flavor but that threw me off and I dont like sending food back. Coffee was decent. When we got there there was a small line but took a while to move since the cashier and a customer decided to have a full blown conversation after the customer ordered. I've been meaning to make a stop since I live in the neighborhood, and my close friend, who I found out was a regular, was able to give me just the push I needed-- and I am so happy I came in! I was in need of a strong caffeine fix on a Wednesday morning and the Iced Quad shot Honey Latte I ordered hit the spot. There was no line, and plenty of street parking this morning so that was nice (especially considering all the hype on social media!). After ordering, I sat at the bar with my friend and the ambience and vibes were top tier. The staff members I met were an absolute delight, and definitely added a sweetness to my morning! This tiny Roosevelt row place is located in an old house on a residential street. There is no big sign, so you strictly have to go by house number until you see the umbrellas in the front yard. It's so adorable surrounded by a white picket fence and honeysuckle bushes. There's a big front porch with tables as well. When you first walk in you'll see a sign telling you to order before you get a table. That kind of helps the flow of things. You order the counter and you're given a number. There is a staff member who helps you find a table, and you can wait outside in the back patio with misters while you wait for your table. The misters don't help at all and it's very hot out there - we ended up coming back in and waiting inside for a few minutes anyway. The menu is small, but it has a lot of good choices. My son got the veggie sandwich which was based around slices of roasted eggplant on the list delicious-looking bread. I ordered the BLT which had thick sliced bacon and a tomato habanero jam. Both were served with potato chips, and both were absolutely amazing. My son also got a Shaken Peanut Butter espresso, which was sooo yummy. This place is a real hidden gem. Our food was really, really good, and so was the coffee. When you come, keep in mind that it's a residential neighborhood with street parking. Timing is key--we got there around noon and we're third in line, but am hour later, the line was out the door. I think earlier is better. The breakfast menu and dinner menu look pretty good, so I'll be back to try that. read more

I've been going to their First Place Coffee truck for years, and have been waiting to get down to their newer brick and mortar. I finally did today and boy was I pleased and also not surprised. You can tell the owner runs her business with love and dedication. She even assisted me with getting more to-go boxes. Her staff are also so friendly. The food and drink? Delicious and gorgeous. Loved when they were a cute little coffee truck (first place coffee) so I was excited to see they moved here. We just came for coffee but they added breakfast. I tried the shaken mint latte and it was delicious! I've noticed with places like these they want you to get in line to order first and then sit. With only one register and a long line, it can take a while especially when the line is out the door in the heat. I wish they had a separate line for just coffee or maybe another register. Tucked inside a cute Roosevelt Historic District neighborhood sits Matilda's, a funky, retro, and hipster cafe that instantly feels like home. Instead of one large, open space, the cafe is split into several cozy, personal rooms. I grabbed a seat in a charming room featuring a yellow booth, red brick tables, and warm natural wood accents. (It was busy so I didn't take pics of every room. Didn't want to disturb other guests). Since it was my first time, a friendly staff member walked me through the entire menu. They serve drinks you won't find at standard coffee shops. I ordered the Caffe de Olla and enjoyed it. They also offer a full menu spanning breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Super-cute spot in a beautiful historic home with different rooms, a back patio and a front porch. I hear you can also sit in the front lawn. Lots of cool decoration items to look at on the walls. We went around 8 am on a Friday morning and got in right away, but on weekends the wait can be really long. Similarly, parking can be really tricky. Staff was so sweet - the lady who took our order was super-friendly. We had a giant chocolate chip cookie. It's very tasty and we appreciated the hint of salt. My breakfast sandwich was yummy - I had the avocado inside, with egg, white cheddar cheese, aioli and chili spread. My friend had the Brioche Bread Pudding French Toast. LOVEEEE Matilda's so much. My fiancé and I came to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary. We didn't have a reservation and were able to just walk in. It was our first time having dinner (we've been in for breakfast several times- yum!!) and it was incredible. The standout was the charred leek dip. We also got the handkerchief pasta and the bistro steak. Absolutely delightful!!!! I appreciated how the meal was paced and our server was on the same wavelength as us in terms of timing. Pretty sure I dressed completely wrong for the front lawn - picnic baskets and tables and blankets splayed out like a novelist's dream, including the French style water carafes. I'll know for next time. We ordered at the front and I immediately realized I'd been here before - when it was the uber popular Garden Bar - also impossible to get a table for. Lucked out and got a table inside but had just missed the cut off for breakfast food (11am) so we got the only item left served all day for breakfast and a lunch item (turkey club) on a whim. I had been really excited to try the matcha beverages but was sorely disappointed when I got the Matcha Rose and it tasted like it was flavored with pickle juice of some sort. Definitely had me confused and I had to ask the waiter to shed some light. Ended up swapping it out for the Copa de Oro instead which was not my usual choice since I'm not a fan of orange but wanted an espresso bevy with a kick to match my sammy . I was much more impressed with this on but took the orange peel out. The foam at the top is still heavily orange flavored but I didn't mind this flavor much. It was smooth and presentation is very nice. To be expected, the inside was hard to find a table but we snagged one and had a hard time hearing each other so the community table out back seemed promising with the misters. The only problem were the flies. We were attacked by at least 2-3 at a time and there was a total of around 5-6 just around us. It was probably because we were the only ones left with food outside, but nevertheless very annoying - so please invest in table fans! After we ate, I waited for a box but that definitely took way too long so I just asked a different waitress and then we re-located to alongside the wall right under the misters. There was plenty of seating even though the line took about 20 minutes to get through, we didn't have any issues with the first seat. They even have picnic settings outside so you can eat and enjoy the weather while it's still good. Our drinks were decent, and I would say relatively well priced. The sandwich comes with either avocado or bacon, and we chose bacon. I wish it came with greens or maybe a tomato, and maybe that the bacon was crispier. Pro-tip: Expect a long line and tight parking. The potatoes are good to share between two people. Highlights: It's a great place to meet up with girlfriends because of the cute aesthetics and simple menu. I personally love their collaboration with The Dinesaur bakery. Originally wanted the Savory toast but heard they had sold out (@ 10am). No worries, I opted for the Breakfast sammy with avocado instead of bacon. Ordered their cinnamon, honey, vanilla latte which was delicious! Got our number and walked around trying to find a table. Can get very packed with limited seating so be aware! Once we sat down, I got up to grab 2 glasses + a water jug that they have on a mini table for guests to grab. Before we knew it, someone brought us our coffee and food. The breakfast sammy tasted so flavorful! The calabrian chilis, I believe, really upgraded this sandwich. Tasted fresh, packed with flavor, would definitely order again. Breakfast is only served til 11am fyi, then it goes to the lunch menu. It did get very noisy inside where the seating was. At one point, my friend and I were practically yelling at eachother. Finally made it! I've been visiting First Place Coffee for years and was so excited for this new vision! The renovated house has ample indoor and outdoor seating and a warm, welcoming vibe. With Matilda's, owner Devon McConville has been able to expand the food menu as well as add a spirits menu to the beloved Coffee & Tea offerings of First Place Coffee. I visited today with my daughter and we shared the Breakfast Sammy, Cafe Salad, iced Brown Butter Matcha and iced Tahini Fig latte. Truly, everything was EXCEPTIONAL. The Sammy had multiple layers of flavors and was filling, even when shared between 2 people. The salad was fresh, crunchy, and perfect for a spring day. The beverages have always been favorites as well, so we knew what to expect there! Of note: Matilda's continues to collaborate with The Dinersaur in its baked good offerings, which is always a bonus! Staff was well-versed in all menu items and generally shared the same level of enthusiasm for working at Matilda's as the clientele seemed to have for being there! The texture of the breakfast sandwich and the combo of flavors was perfect. We sat outside, which was nice. It got hot after a while though so we went inside which was a little loud and crowded. I really love this cafe. There's a lot to love... incredibly cute atmosphere, genuinely friendly employees, yummy drinks, and chill vibes. Coming here feels good. The only downside for me is the menu. I often find myself looking at their menu hoping something has changed. Truly I've probably pulled it up 100 times. Nothing I've had has been bad, and I like what I've ordered but I don't love it. For me there's really only one item that appeals to me. I'm not that picky, but sometimes this just happens with menus. There will either be a lot of choices or a select few, often no in-between. Part of it is just the chef's tastes vs my own, but with this particular menu it's just so much bread. It's like the restaurant is owned by skinny people, which to be fair it is. Don't get me wrong I love to indulge, but when I do it's not particularly on bread, it's rich typically nutrient dense foods. It's so cute in there I feel like they need some cute food, like soup, like nutty chicken salad croissants, like quiche, like pie. Also I really loved the first few coffee menus, but the summer one was a miss for me. Again it just happens with different flavor profiles. My friend Meg and I have had Matilda's on our list for a while now and we finally made the drive from the Gilbert area to give it a whirl, and it did NOT disappoint! When you walk in, the restaurant itself is a home-turned-breakfast spot that's tucked between some quaint houses in a quiet neighborhood. The lawn is fit with blankets and little trays to sit out front, and the seating is open and accessible. There are plenty of spots to chose from-- private lounge corners, open tables, and bar seating! The employees were friendly, answered all my questions about their matcha, and were super quick to get our food out. Meg got the Honeycomb as an Americano, and I got their seasonal Matcha Colada-- a great option if you are looking for a non milk based drink! These were absolutely delicious, Meg even said it's the best coffee she's ever had and would drive 30 minutes again JUST to get the coffee! For our mains, we got the Breakfast Sammy which actually made my jaw drop. You can add bacon and avocado for extra and I would highly recommend doing so! Matilda's All Day is one of my favorite places in Phoenix. I come here weekly to work remotely and to just enjoy myself, and it never misses. The staff are unfailingly friendly and genuinely great at what they do, and the ownership is wonderful. The food is absolutely incredible, and both the coffee service and the cocktail program are a delight. It's rare to find a place that does all three that well. The vibe and ambiance are something Phoenix really needed. It's set in a beautiful house built in 1914, and the interior decor gives a lovely nod to that history without feeling precious about it. I am going to be the only person to ever leave a 1-star review of this place, which has a cult-like following, but I have to be real. I had the absolute WORST salad I have ever had in my life. That is a crazy thing to happen, but I am not exaggerating. It was covered in some sort of weird dressing (supposedly a Caesar) that was completely inedible - it was so tart that it actually made my tongue hurt. (Imagine eating a bunch of Sour Patch Kids but three times as sour and without any sweetness.) The toppings were all on the bottom under huge chunks of lettuce that needed to be cut to eat, except the salad was put into such a tiny bowl that you couldn't cut it without sending it all over the table. But the dressing was so completely vile that it didn't matter. I spent $16 on a salad that was impossible to eat. My standards are not strangely high. This was just awful. Maybe it was a bad day. Maybe the dressing had gone bad. I do not know. But it wins the award for the worst salad I've ever had, including the wilted iceberg in sad ranch from a Pizza Hut salad bar in 1999. I ended up eating a piece of my friend's sourdough toast just so I had something for lunch. I had to get back to work, so I didn't have time to send it back and wait for more food. Plus, it was so slammed that it would have been more hassle than it was worth. But after the constant praise I have heard from Matilda's, I left feeling sad. It was incredibly busy, and people love this place, so I will go back and see if it was a weird anomaly. But I will stay far far from the Caesar. read more

We waited about 20-25 minutes to get to the counter and order. Occasionally a staff member would bring out menus for people waiting in line outside. There are two menus - one for food and one for drinks. The food menu is split between Breakfast (8-11am) and Lunch (11am-3pm), though the house special Breakfast Sammy is available until 3pm. For drinks, they offer coffee, tea, and even cocktails. They currently have "winter drinks" which was kind of funny because it's already hot here and doesn't feel like winter. Not all of the winter drinks can be made coffee or matcha - it'll say on the menu. I got the Hazelnut Date Matcha - it was good with a strong nut butter taste. My friend got the Honeycomb Latte (regular coffee drink menu) and said it was the best honey latte she has ever had! Food-wise, I got the popular Breakfast Sammy. Comes with choice of bacon or avocado. I chose bacon, and after trying it, I cannot imagine it any other way. It's a savory sandwich with a bit of sweetness from the glazed bacon. The poppy seed milk bun had a really nice crunch around the edges. It had a Calabrian chili spread that wasn't too spicy. It was just a flavor bomb, and I would totally go back for it. My friend enjoyed her Soft Scrambled Eggs. The toasted baguette was topped with a good amount of parmesan cheese. I tried some of the egg, and it was very fluffy and cheesy as well. There are many tables and some booths inside. I believe there is also patio seating in the back. I saw a lot of people sitting on blankets on the lawn out front as well. Service was great - every staff member was very friendly and patient. The parking situation is not great - all street parking to the point where a two-way street becomes one-way. Why was a Ceaser salad on a muffin plate 17 dollars . That was robbery . Breakfast sandwich is tinier than a fist . If you are down for a cute aesthetic overpriced food and decent coffee pretending to be fancy because they have servers ( servers are super kind but you can tell they are trained to have a super friendly approach) then this is your place .
