I'm pleased that we have this in our town. It has a good variety on the menu, and the quality is very good. Six of us dined here on a weekday evening (early), and the service was very good, and although there was one glitch, they quickly remedied the situation. The seared scallops are fab and spicy; the pizza is big and very good. The sliders are wonderful. The fish and chips are huge, maybe could be a little less greasy, but very tasty and fries good too. If there is one thing I think is a little quirky it is that the bar is not separate at all from the dining, and for a short period of time that we were there, there were some boisterous adults (seniors!) who were hard to ignore. You can always ask to sit on the other side away from the bar. read more

I had lunch with a friend at the McLean branch of Matchbox today and there were a couple of things that really bothered me. First of all, even though I was the second person waiting to be seated, I was ignored as the waiter addressed two men who came in after I did. When this was pointed out by the later arrivals, I was seated at the draftiest table in the restaurant. I requested another table and was seated in a draft free area. It took at least six attempts for him to understand my very simple order. The food arrived promptly and was okay. Once food was delivered, we were completely ignored even though the waiter passed by many times on his way to other tables to refill drinks, etc. We had to flag him down to get drink refills. The place was not particularly crowded so there is no excuse for such poor service. I have no idea if they are using a staffing service but they've lost my business. read more

Poor experience at this Matchbox tonight. We ordered the Summer Sangria cocktail for $14 and the small Prosecco for $11. Sangria was non- descriptive. Could not taste all the ingredients and tasted like a mix of different fruit juices. When we got the bill we were surprised it was $37. When we checked the itemized bill we found we had been charged for a medium sized glass of wine for $17. We could not believe this was a medium sized glass because it was such a small glass. Give the server the benefit of the doubt that the error was a genuine mistake rather than intentional deceit. Will definitely not be coming back here. Epic fail. read more

Restaurants really come down to perceived value. Do the service, food, and overall experience mesh with the price? Matchbox doesn't. I go to a fast food place, I know what I should expect. I go to a steak restaurant, I know what I should expect. I go to Italian, easy to judge. I sometimes have no idea what to expect with a low to mid-tier place like this, especially when they advertise it as better than that. But it certainly isn't what they offer. Disorganized staff. Overpriced meh food. You can get better of everything they offer within 5 minutes of this place. Another restaurant that will likely fail in McLean. read more

For some reason the McLean Matchbox's Fig and Prosciutto Pizza isn't as good as the Matchbox in Merryfield -- they use strips of uncooked proscuitto (not fried) and have more cheese and figs and honey. And the Merryfield Matchbox is much quieter. read more

My son and I went there, it was a random stop fighting traffic and getting gas. Happen to spot and really enjoyed, the waiter a d waitress switched out partially through service but were great communicators and provided checkups promptly. I enjoyed the ribeye, there was a fair amount of gristle which can be hit or miss. They asparagus was cooked perfectly just the amount of give, with a bit of crisp. My son (Adult) ordered the chicken alfredo and really enjoyed the pasta and sauce, but gave up on the chicken saying it was severely dry. read more

I love this place. Since it opened, it's the only restaurant we go to in Mclean. The manager always goes above and beyond to accommodate us, and the staff is always so friendly and attentive. Just had dinner there, our server was Bashir (spelling?). He is only 2 weeks on the job and he was so excellent. Very attentive, very professional, very friendly. We go to Matchbox a lot, and all the servers are amazing, the food is consistently good, the cocktail and wine selection great, lots of booths (great for families!), we love this place, it has become our Friday night dinner tradition. read more

They do not allow pets on the outdoor patio. Would not budge. However, Matchbox in Reston, allows pets on their patio. HORRIBLE.

Main menu included 'teaser' that draft beer was $6 for happy hour; happy hour menu was not provided but had different prices. Manager refused to honor main menu price.... Was excited that a Matchbox opened close to home because I've been happy with their other locations. This one won't last long if tonight's meal was any indicator. To go order. Linguini was extremely salty. Couldn't eat past a few bites. Chimichurri steak ordered medium, but it was rare and cold. We heated it on our stove. Would have sent it back if we'd eaten in the restaurant. Chimichurri sauce was bland. Artichoke dip was a tiny serving and not very good. Close to $100 down the drain. If it's still here in another year, maybe we'll try it again. read more
