Historically, matcha and I have not gotten along. But after my third visit to Maiko I am officially reconsidering mending this fraught relationship. This small and chic cafe is clearly a neighborhood favorite. The staff was patient with answering my questions about their plant based options while keeping a pleasant, cool demeanor during a rush in the middle of a heat wave. Gold stars to the whole team. I suspiciously took my strawberry matcha with oat milk to one of the few bench seatings and sipped with caution. It was delightful. The house made strawberry puree added just enough sweetness while bringing a brightness to the traditionally earthy flavor of the matcha. I now find myself craving another just a couple of days later. A craving I plan on indulging again soon with a book. read more

When I first drove by this place I thought it was a matcha latte place but I was pleasantly surprised to find they also serve delicious soft serve ice cream (including Matcha of course!). The matcha is high quality and the Maiko Special I got was huge but delicious. I wasn't able to finish it because of the size and richness of the matcha and wished that I had gone with a swirl flavor to cut the richness of the matcha. However, it was still a nice, unique treat. It was on the pricey side though and I do think spending almost $10 on a soft serve ice cream sundae is a bit too steep. read more

I think the cashier was new and she didn't say much but the other girl working was so bubbly and knowledgeable of the menu. Great Drinks, Disappointing Service My younger brother and I decided to visit Matcha Café Maiko at the Arboretum Shopping Center. I ordered my usual Passionfruit Mangoade, which was as tasty as always, refreshing, and flavorful. My 13-year-old brother, trying something new, chose the Matcha Kuromitsu Kinako Latte. Unfortunately, he didn't enjoy it. I approached the counter to see if we could exchange his drink for something else. A staff member, an Indian girl with beautiful long black hair informed me - in a rather condescending tone - that exchanges weren't allowed and we'd need to purchase another $7 drink. Even when I offered to pay the difference for a different drink, she stated that it was against the owner's policy. While I understand that businesses have rules, her lack of empathy and her tone were very disappointing. Thankfully, another employee stepped in and offered us some sweetener to adjust the taste, which helped salvage the situation. However, the initial interaction left such a bad impression. It's unfortunate because the drinks here are genuinely good, but the customer service experience has deterred me from returning. I wish everyone in customer service understood that your delivery can ruin your entire message and ruin the experience for patrons. read more

The cashiers were so friendly and inviting. It was my first time and then I saw the word dirty and asked what makes it dirty?! lol I left with a lot of laughs, trying a new drink - dirty matcha latte and a really good muffin I did not prefer the matcha. It wasn't bad but I like mine to be more sweet to not get the bitter aftertaste. Otherwise the crumble muffin was a treat. Just would have liked it warm but it was the middle of the day. I came across this place on Yelp and decided to give it a go. I entered at 11:57 am and was told to wait outside till they opened at 12:00. I completely understand the protocol so I went back to my car till 12:05. When I entered, there was a long line and every table was full. I immediately was happy because a full cafe is a wonderful sign. There are high stool tables and low seat chairs. I wanted a Ube/matcha mix. Sadly, they didn't have any Ube so I ordered the seasonal iced blueberry matcha. I did not like it. My personal preference is a sweetener matcha. My bestie boo wanted to come here for matcha so why not?? Since they had soft serve, we decided to come for dessert after lunch. I was disappointed and heart broken that they didn't have the ube latte. I'm not sure if they just ran out or don't serve it anymore but either way, it was a let down. I got the strawberry matcha latte which was pretty good. Since the strawberry was at the bottom, even when I mixed it, I felt like that's all I could taste was the strawberry, but it was really good. The matcha flavor was faint but I think it's because the strawberry was so overpowering. My mom got the regular matcha latte and she said it was really good. I got the matcha and ube soft serve and the matcha was so overpowering, I couldn't even taste the ube when I got both together on my spoon. I literally had to eat through the matcha just to get to the ube at the bottom. The ube was my favorite, light and nutty/vanilla flavor. My daughter had vanilla and my bestie got the vanilla and ube soft serve, they both loved theirs. I think next time I'll get just ube soft serve in a cone. I feel like it's more enjoyable and fun to eat that way. I hope they have ube latte next time too! They are a little pricey, everything came to $43 (my dad also got a mocha latte), but I would definitely go if you love matcha and try the different treats they have. Cute cafe! I've been on a matcha kick so when I saw there was a spot that offered matcha soft serve I had to drop in! This spot offers a decent amount of options for parfaits, sweet treats and cafe beverages. I was slightly disappointed to learn that you cannot make your own soft serve "swirl" combination- instead they have limited options available for purchase. I opted to go with a small matcha soft serve on a waffle cone (priced fairly steep for what you get). The waffle cone was delicious but I wouldn't recommend ordering the matcha ice cream on its own and it's light on sugar. I think the matcha is best served paired with a sweeter flavored ice cream. Next time I'm in town I'll drop in to try another combination! read more

The look of this treat reminds me of the Filipino halo-halo. The Maiko Special was refreshing and interesting; two words I wouldn't typically use to describe a dessert. It wasn't very sweet though, which I do appreciate. My boyfriend didn't love it, but he tends to lean towards desserts that are very sugary. I can't say that this is something that I would want to eat all the time, but it's a treat that I'd indulge in again. I look forward to visiting again so that I can try some other menu items. YUM! I've been wanting to check this spot out for some months now. When I happened to be on this side of town for a work meeting I had to stop in. The shop is super cute inside. They have real plants all over and huge table for a large groups, that's great for pics lol. There's some smaller tables and seats by the window. Very nicely decorated and situated inside! I drove 15 minutes out of my way to come here as I've visited this chain in Seattle. Was craving a matcha soft serve bad and this hit the spot. The quality of the matcha is always 100% and the mochi is delicious (though I hate paying 50 cents for 1 mochi). Service was excellent. There were 2 women who were manning the front and it wasn't busy at all at around 2PM on Saturday. I loved that parking was easy and right in front of the store. I've been to the location in California and was so excited that they had one here in North Carolina! I love their matcha drinks and the other ice cream flavors they carry. I saw that they had roll cakes too next time I stop by I'll make sure to try something different on the menu. I got the Shogun matcha ice cream cone that had gold flakes on it. It tastes as good as it looks! Even though it was cold out I had to get one before heading back Columbia, SC. They are in a pretty big shopping center so plenty of parking spots.
