I asked for my ube matcha not to be really sweet. It was perfect. My husband loved the flavors of his. He is not a huge fan of matcha. The fact that he really liked it speaks volumes. Let me start by saying that I DO NOT like matcha. I am a big tea drinker, but for some reason I have never been a fan of matcha. With that being said, I first tasted Gotcha Matcha at a Yelp Elite event. And I kept going back for samples. I promised myself that I would check out their actual location. While it took me wayyy too long, I finally made good on that promise. My daughter is a big matcha fan, so I brought her with me. We lucked out and found a parking spot on the street near the building. Although it's located inside another building, there is plenty of signage to help direct the way. When we arrived, there were a few people enjoying drinks already at the little cafe tables. There was one young lady taking orders and making the drinks. My daughter wanted the strawberry cheesecake but they were out of one of the syrups needed. So she had a plain strawberry. I ordered the Pina colada. We both got medium sizes. My drink definitely tasted just like Pina Colada! It took me awhile to drink the whole thing. I would probably just get a small next time. HE was bubbly and super helpful when trying to decide what to get from their variety on the menu. We ended up getting The Panda (pandan matcha) and To the Yams (ube matcha), plus couldn't resist the ube cinnamon roll. The drinks were cute and The Panda even had a cute matcha art atop it. The cinnamon roll was pretty good but came out super late. It ended up being ready and nobody remembered to give it to us. After we were waiting for a bit, we asked if they had it and were confused but found it after some time to give to us. In truth, I was worried that the flavors might be too intense and compromise the flavor profile and integrity of the matcha, but I need not have stressed. Gotcha Matcha has got flavor balancing down to a science. I had the iced panda matcha with oat milk. Made with pandan, it added the perfect sweetness to my drink and a lovely, vanilla-y, slightly floral profile to the matcha, which only elevated it. My bestie went for the Dubai chocolate matcha and she was obsessed. It was truly all she talked about for the rest of the day. I tried it and it was quite good, just slightly too sweet for my tastes and not my personal cup of tea. That said, I'm biased as I don't really enjoy chocolate. We also split the ube cinnamon roll which was perfectly soft and had a delicious rich flavor. It was like nothing I'd ever tasted before and, again, the balance of the ube was bang on. We would've gotten another one if it wasn't the last one. The cafe itself is cutely decorated in vibrant greens. It does fill up, but it never felt cramped. Best matcha yet!! I've been on a matcha kick lately and this is easily my favorite of the handful I've tried. The flavor was so good and the consistency absolutely perfect. The strawberry was sweet but not overbearing! Came here on the Fourth of July so it was virtually empty, but the barista was super friendly and provided great recommendations. Gotcha Matcha is a coffee spot like no other! It's located in the Coterie Concept in South End. Which is a super adorable wine shop in the evenings. But during the day Gotcha Matcha operates in this space and I highly recommend this place for great coffee, pasties, service and vibes!
