when i first had Marugame Udon in hawaii, i was OBSESSED. the noodles, the broth, the tempura everything was just mwah, perfect. it honestly became a must stop every time i visit. so when i saw Marugame Udon, i had to go... but it just didn't hit the same. i don't know if it was an off day or what, but i left kinda disappointed compared to what i remembered. definitely skip the tan tan udon that one was a miss for me. it just doesn't taste the same as it did at the hawaii location. the nikutama was okay, nothing crazy but still decent. i'd probably give it another shot another day to see if it was just inconsistent, because i know how good it can be.

Marugame Udon was introduced to me by a friend in LA when we visited. I didn't quite grasp the hype at the time but I've grown to appreciate it. Udon is fresh, fast-food style, and fairly affordable. Add-ons such as tempura can add up quickly, but aren't needed for a solid meal. Even if the line looks long, they're efficient and move quick. With the fast food style, there's not much service so be sure to bus your own table afterwards. Plenty of parking being the Southcenter Mall, and plenty of activities to do before or after. Lots of dessert, Round 1, and the entire mall is easily accessible. Washroom (restroom) available inside the restaurant not tied to the mall, which is nice.

Marugame always hits the spot. Every time. It's so good. The tonkotsu is amazing. Flavor is amazing. Service is so fast. Inside seating is plentiful.

This was my first time at an udon restaurant and I ordered the kake broth with an egg. I LOVED the chewy noodle texture, the mild flavor of the broth, and the perfectly soft boiled egg. I tried a couple of the fried foods and the potato croquet was yummy, but I didn't like the breading on the chicken. I don't love fried meat in general and I wished that they had more non-fried, lean meat options to add to the ramen since I don't eat red meat, but aside from that I enjoyed this meal!

We finally got to try this place and it did not disappoint. We came during lunch time and it wasn't too busy. They have a large dining area so there was plenty of seats and it wasn't too loud. Food wise, you order the bowl you want first and then tells them any add ons you want. Then you get to choose if you want any fried stuff. We decided to try a few. Since we don't come to this area often, we splurge a little and got more things and it adds up. 2 bowls + 3-4 fried items for $46. If you are just coming for the udon, the prices aren't too bad. We got: Nikutamaa : love the broth, but it can get sweet after a few bites. Egg was soft and nice. Meat was a little tough Creamy udon: broth was good, chasu was on the tough side. Udon was good. Tempura: we got egg, shrimp chicken and a katsu chicken. I was surprised at how juicy the katsu was. The egg one was probably the favorite among the tempura items but they were all pretty good We ate these a little too fast so we definitely felt the fullness really fast as well. Overall, a pretty good place for udon. Would come back if in the area.

Beef bolognese udon, eel & beef rice bowl, soup, tempura, salted egg

Everything was delicious! The chicken tempura was perfectly tender and moist. The outside breaded part is very light and not very crunchy. I thought it was very nice, especially dipped in the tempura sauce. The croquette & zucchini were also good. The eel in the eel & beef rice bowl was so tender, it broke apart easily and was melt in your mouth delicious. The beef in the beef tomatoes curry rice bowl was tender. The beef katsu was tender, and my husband loved the dish. He put chili oil on top, and it originally had some spice, so it was too spicy for me. The beef bolognese udon was creamy and as my husband described, a little slimy. It was rich and flavorful.

We stopped here to check this udon shop out. It's like a cafeteria style setup. You tell the m what you want. The noodles are all handmade. On a tray. They put the noodles with the broth you choose. And then you go down the line and pick what additional add ons you want for an additional price. It was a very tasty udon noodles. I absolutely didn't need any add one and just savor the yummy udon and soup. The udon was springy to the mouth. Very tasty and delicious Highly recommend this. Easy for a quick and go lunch. Especially when you are at the mall.

Kake udon with tamagoyaki and imitation crab tempura
    Michelle L.

One of the most affordable, but satisfying meals in the area! I ordered my usual Kake Udon and Tamagoyaki tempura. Also grabbed a giant Imitation Crab tempura which I haven't seen at my usual location in LA. They do allow you to request fresh tempura if the kind you want isn't ready, but be prepared to wait 5+ minutes if you choose to do so. As with other locations, the water and condiments were all self serve. Despite the lunch rush, we were able to find a table easily and the restaurant itself felt clean. The quality and taste of the food were great as well. I definitely walked out with a warm and full belly!

Marugame is a classic spot - I've been to many locations in other areas. They're great if you need a quick, affordable, and comforting meal but I wouldn't expect anything outstanding. I got the new menu item, the tomatama udon, which was a tomato curry broth with a piece of fried chicken on top. This was imo one of the most worth it items as you essentially get a massive piece of chicken on top of a curry base, which was super filling altogether. While the broth was good, I didn't think the flavor was that outstanding - it was missing some depth. I really enjoyed the chicken though as it was juicy and crispy. Good for a quick meal, and for large groups!

came back a year later after the food poisoning incident from uncooked tempura batter to see if they ironed out the issues, and what a relief, everything is smooth, easy, and delicious. Lunch rush on a week day was pretty mild, noise level is high but no line out the door. The nikutama is delicious and made very well. The server was fast with it and the restaurant was overall very clean. Appreciated the server coming by to ask if everything was OK even after we sat down. Will come back to try their beef tomato soup!

I like the concept of Marugame Udon, I just was not a fan at all of the curry. The sauce was way too sweet for a curry; I almost felt like I was drinking straight sugar shoyu. I did like the amount of toppings you can add; the self-serve model is nice. I would definitely not get the curry again. The katsu was just alright.

When I found out Marugame Udon was opening up in WA, I was jumping for joy in the inside. After trying it for the first time in Hawaii, I would find myself constantly craving a bowl of steamy udon noodles from here. During its grand opening, it was really busy and lines were long but now that the hype has slowed down, the wait to order has been pretty manageable even during peak hours. The ordering system is efficient and the menu is easy to read. You order down the counter and then grab a seat after you gather your utensils. I typically order the nikutama with Bk sauce which is also the most popular option here. The flavor is always consistent even compared to the location in Hawaii. The beef is by far the winner. It's so sweet, soft and mouthwatering with a nice texture. The curry and tonkatsu udon are a few of my other favorites. Portions are HUGE. I can eat a lot for my size and the regular size is more than enough to make me stuffed. They offer an app where you can earn reward points to redeem for side orders and even a bowl of udon.

Service was also smooth and efficient despite how busy it was, and the staff kept things moving quickly. Overall, one of the best malatang spots I've been to so far.
