Finally tried this spot and was so happy they have 2 vegan options. They have a miso vegan udon and tan tan vegan udon. On the menu it says ask for either broth or sauce versions but apparently tan tan has no broth version? To order it's almost like a cafeteria line where you order which udon type you want and they hand you a tray with it. Then you go down the line and ask to add appetizers like tempura to your tray. Then you pay at the end and bring it to your seat. They had plenty of seating on a weekday lunch. I do know it can get crowded on weekends. For vegans, You do need to tell the person it's the vegan version you want because then they add their soy protein to it which is slightly spicy by the way. They already stock the area you get water and bus your table with to go containers and bags. Easy! This would be a primary restaurant I'd choose to eat at the mall. Came on a thursday night. Feels like the quality went down. I do like how they let you scoop your own green onions and tempera flakes now. They only had 1 order of udon left so we got rice bowl and nikutama. The rice bowl was not it.the beef wasn't that tender and there wasn't enough sauce so it was just beef and rice. Only good thing is that they had onions in the rice bowl. Chicken katsu white meat was a little tough to eat. One part of it was unchewable so I had to cut it off. There was alot of flies everywhere too so its a little sketchy since the tempura items are left out in the open. The tray they gave us for the food was sticky and dirty.. don't think they cleaned it before they gave it to us. When we finished and had to put the dishes back. It was all filled so we had to empty some random persons bowl along with ours in order to stack them onto 1 tray.. I'm pretty sure that's not supposed to be a customers job.. read more

Come before 6:30 pm to beat dinner rush, line gets hella long. Friends and I got nikutama and tonkotsu. It is freshly handmade udon, they make it while you order. Udon noodle does not get fresher than this, the udon noodle making process is therapeutic. Nikutama - amazing noodle texture, every bite gives you happiness. The thinly sliced beef pairs nicely with the scallion onion and crunch toppings. There is also a soft boiled eggs to round everything up Tonkotsu - noodle texture amazing, nice creamy broth I personally like nikutamama more. Find a seat and grab your tempura and katsu dipping sauces at the utensils station. For a quick service spot, the udon really is acceptable. It's a lot softer and way squishier than I like it personally but in a pinch (ie right before the movies) it works. This was my first location outside their location in Hawaii. I'm glad that Marugame decided to open one near me on the Mainland. Many years before, I would be lining up for 30+ minutes plus in order to try this in Waikiki. For what you get, I think it's great value! For sure, sometimes it does take 2 orders or a few extra side dishes to fill me up. I'm a big fan and order the items from the dashi column pretty often with a side of pumpkin tempura. If you didn't know, they have an app and a reward system as well. The interior is super clean and always well kept. There is some outside seating, great for the summer but not when the weather is starting to get cold. The workers here are always super patient and nice when it comes to customers' first time as a location like this. This place is my choice for comfort food. The bento dishes are well-proportioned, and the udon soups are great for any season. Some of the menu changes each month, so there is always something to try out. Dining in is a great experience, as you can watch your soup prepared while you're in line. They have also added tempura side dishes that you can pick up. If you prefer ordering for pickup, there are kiosks that bypass the line. I've ordered some of the udon soups for dinner, and they are packaged well enough that nothing spills when driving home. The dining area is nice, with a modern feel to it. This is the "Chipotle" of Udon bowls. It is cafeteria-style and you can add anything you want. My first time ever at a Marugame Udon was in Honolulu, Hawaii so I had for memories and high hopes. This experience came close but not the same. This particular Marugame is located at the Santa Anita mall (Westfield), which is directly across from Cheesecake factory. It is tucked in near the entrance. I came super early because I was told this place gets super crowded. It opened at 11 am and I met my family there. There is ample signage outside and a big menu with photos and descriptions . You can start out with either a noodle bowl or perhaps a rice bowl and you continue down the cafeteria style to add any toppings you may like such as tempura fried chicken or maybe some fried dumplings. There are also things you can request inside of your Super Bowl, which is extra meat, eggs, onions, etc.. Each topping or add-on is quite pricey so you're looking to add on anywhere from two to $10 so you have to be wise with your choices otherwise you can easily walk out of there with a $50 bowl . I ordered a tonkatsu bowl and added on some tempura. That pretty much filled me up but if you are extra hungry you can add on at anytime. There are seats to eat-in there but you can also take anything to go. When Marugame started to expand, it felt more corporate and less food you got so that's why I'm giving this a four instead of a five stars. Holy cow was that a DISAPPOINTMENT!! As a huge Margume fan myself who dines at Sawtelle regularly, this food at this Santa Anita location was absurdly far apart from its usual quality standard. If you've eaten at their location in Waikiki (my first time), you'd know how amazing the product is supposed to be. Umami, unctuous udon combined with freshly fried tempura... it's supposed to be a bite in heaven. Service was so so as I can tell the workers were just trying to get home. The "ambiance" was cool because the place is still pretty new. I highly urge management to take a closer look at this location because it's a shame that they let this location ruin their reputation. We hoped that Marugame will branch out and I'm glad they did. Marugame now has locations in California and Texas. I probably ate at most of the locations in California but first time in Arcadia. The food is always consistent throughout all their locations. The fresh Artisan Udon Noodles is the best I had so far. Our fav is the Nikutama and its variations hot, cold, and curry.
