I've been wanting to try this spot for a while and finally got the chance. The interior is unique with colorful paintings that give it a lot of character. One thing that stood out is that they serve mayocoba (Peruano) beans instead of the usual pinto beans. I've had them before but it's rare to see them at a restaurant and they're really good. I originally wanted the carne asada torta but the owner said he hadn't had time to pick up the meat that morning. I ended up ordering the grilled chicken torta instead and it was still pretty good. The owner jokes around a lot which was funny but explained that if you have thin skin, his restaurant might not be the place for you. Overall, I'd definitely come back. read more

The menu advertised chilaquiles, but what we were served was nothing close. it was overly salty, burned cheese. We also ordered a pork "carnitas" taco that tasted more like barbacoa, they have no clue. The owner is loud and overly proud, constantly boasting about his food but showing zero manners toward customers. He makes rude jokes and, if he doesn't like your response, replies with offensive remarks. I found his behavior especially troubling, he was disrespectful and even racist toward his own kind , yet quick to flaunt his Mexican heritage. Careful he may spit in your food . Please don't use worlds he may not like he will attack. Excuse my language, and even though I ate some great food at Martin's today, he's a fucking nut job. He started before I even entered the restaurant, saying hi from his vehicle, sweating profusely, and not knowing who he was, I simply proceeded to try the restaurant door. He quickly entered my personal space accusing me of not saying hello back. Then he identified himself as the owner and ushered me into the restaurant. Long story short, the tacos I had were delicious, but the attitude, insults, and lack of respect he showed to me and the other patrons was distasteful. By the end of lunch I knew his religious affiliation, his political affiliation, and his total need to be be right about anything and everything. My first visit to Martin's felt like an almost formal experience. It caught me off guard when I came in on a slow day and realized Martin himself was the host, server, and cook. He eagerly told us about the mayocaba beans, grown and exported by his extended family's farm in Sinaloa. He disappeared into the kitchen for a moment and pulled out a simple app with these beans and tomatillo salsa over tortilla chips. One bite and I knew I was in for the real deal, another testament to Tucson's reputation for quality Mexican food that eclipses surrounding cities. I didn't try anything too off the wall--red chile burrito, chicken mole tacos. Both huge portions and absolute abundance of rich, smoky flavors enveloped in house-made tortillas. Damn, just ate at Martins tonight it was delicious! Had the fish tacos they were cooked perfectly on corn tortillas and my sister ate the Vegi Burro! It's been a while since I've been in so it was a much welcomed treat! He was also doing catering for touring musicians at the Fox theater tonight so it was good we got in for a nice meal. Amazing experience! Martin is the owner and actually waiter as well. While ordering he explained the process of cooking the meals, how they source the ingredients from his family farm, and how they don't even own a fridge because they cook everything fresh every day! (Some reviews are about slow service, and this is because they cook everything fresh. The quality is worth the wait IMO) I have dietary restrictions (non-dairy and vegetarian) which makes it hard to enjoy authentic Mexican food, but he went out of his way to go through the menu with me and ensure that we could find something tasty that meets my requirements. I ordered the soy chorizo and egg torta and it was yummy! They make the soy chorizo from scratch which was great to hear since a lot of plant-based substitutes are highly processed. The torta came with egg, mayocoba beans, potato, and soy chorizo as well as chips and fresh roasted salsa. The chips were the best I've ever had (fresh and warm) and he even put extra bean dip on the side for me to take home. Overall, a Tucson must! read more

I'm so happy to see a new Mexican place where Alejandro's was. Al's was a once a week go-to when I worked in downtown Tucson. I went with a group of 7 and our server was great. The plexiglass between tables made things feel more COVID safe. We all loved our meals. Mine was the queso fundido with chorizó. I needed more chorizo and sadly it took a while to get to me and it wasn't crispy like what the queso came with originally, but it was good. Once you realize that, go with it, have a good time, dig the funky atmosphere, be treated like someone who's eaten there for years and enjoy the excellent food. My wife and I were in search of good mexican while visiting Tucson, partiularly a mole dish. She can search Yelp and find the perfect place with ease. She found Martin's, and we checked it out. Lots of funky paintings, some with Martin's signature in the corner. We asked him if he was the artist. "Depends... do you like them?" Ha! The mole was perfect! I have had this place bookmarked for awhile and was in the area... and hungry so stopped by. With the pandemic, they are open for takeout. We were greeted and taken care of warmly by Martin himself. We ordered the chilaquiles and a 3 taco plate. He whipped up our order/packaged it up, and even though we had a hike back to Vail the food was super tasty and still warm when we got home. The salsas were awesome, I particularly liked the green. My hubby got the carne asada, chicken mole and one other taco that was recommended and he scarfed them down. He is a hard sell on any Mexican food establishment he has never tried and he loved his tacos. My chilaquiles were really good, and I loved the way they did the beans. I was really impressed at how nicely everything was packaged up and in a bag that was sealed shut. Well done Martin, we will be back! read more

Thoughtful and well-crafted for the "foodie". Martin uses the freshest ingredients and prepares them from scratch. We had chips & guac & salsa with FRESH beans, the fish, cactus, and pork tacos, and a great half chocolate / half flan cake. To drink, we tried both the fresh hibiscus tea and a tamarind drink. Everything was amazing! We were shocked by some of the reviews criticizing Martin. We found him to be so engaging and extremely into the design of his meals with herbs, vegetables, and food combinations. "Everything has a purpose." We ate so much but didn't at all have the stomach aches that are all too common after eating so much. Everything tasted so delicious and "sat right" afterwards, too! Chips and salsa were complimentary. We had the 3 tacos and the Chilaqulies Estillo Sinaloa. I tried the chicken mole, carne asada and carne con chile on corn tortillas. Martin (owner/chef/waiter) is a very outgoing guy and made the experience much more enjoyable, explaining aspects of the cooking and recommending food based on a person's preferences. The atmosphere is much more intimate because the restaurant is very small (only 4-5 tables) and Martin is not afraid to call out bad manners (which led to multiple laughable exchanges with a particularly bad mannered member of our group). The food was delicious! I had the carne asada burro with rice beans and spinach. My friend had the special chicken tomatillo Carmelo. It had tender chicken pieces, green beans and herbs in a savory sauce. It was grilled inside a huge tortilla with cheese, beans and spinach. Neither one of us were able to finish the servings. The service was great my water glass was never empty. The young man was polite and attentive. The owner came out to chat and was gracious and playful. I can't comment on the food because we never made it that far. The "customer service" of the owner is hostile, rude, and completely turned us away. The place looked interesting from the street, but while telling us about the wait time to be seated (as he gestured to two empty tables), for some reason the owner decided to comment on how we were dressed. He said we could come back in 20 minutes and he would remember us, "Because people here don't dress like that. We don't wear that type of hat or coat." While pointing. Very strange. My friend and I were confused about whether the guy was trying to be funny, but it was definitely a weirdly aggressive exchange for absolutely no reason. I've honestly never had that type of experience from front of house staff. It went from "oh cool" to "never again" in under a minute. Tucson is such an amazing food town that I can't imagine any reason to visit this place. Save yourself the trouble and support another local business. read more

This Saturday, March 1st at approximately 8 pm my mom & I had the worst experience at Martins on 4th Avenue. We had attended a 3 hour tile craft class on 4th Avenue & decided to relax & eat at Martins. We sat outside at the table/chairs. While at the craft class we had a pizza & planned to take the leftover pizza home so we sat the pizza box on the table. The waiter walked up-asked if he could help us & we asked for a menu. He proceeded to tell us we could not have a pizza box on "his table" & refused to give us a menu. We again said we would like to see a menu & we were NOT eating our pizza there. At that point he started to yell at us saying "f---you- get out of here" in his rant repeating saying "f---you". He asked our names- which we told him but he would not tell us his name. Then we calmly again said "we are here to eat-what is the problem?" He went on repeatedly saying "f--- you- get away from MY table!" What was his explosive attitude & foul language about? My mom is 72 & we were out for a calm fun craft nite & this is how we get treated? He was scary. I highly suggest for people to not go to this restaurant. read more

Lured us in by asking why would we want to go to a place that didn't serve fresh food ( referring to Boca Tacos). The icing on the cake is that they DO NOT serve alcohol as advertised... you have to order it from across the street... last insult... Matin the owner charged us 20 bucks per person. So no menu, no prices, he's the " everything". He then says it's 20 bucks per person ( for a total of 12 tacos, chips, salsa and guacamole)... " is that a problem?" Take home message... Excellent. Lite and flaky. Ate outside. A beautiful night! Horchata was amazing. Made fresh! Amazing. If you want beer and wine...you need to bring your own (then you would have to dine inside).
