The owner was very rude and verbally abusive to the customers (me included). He raised his voice at me for telling him that I was ready to order. On top of that, the food was flavorless and bland. Also very expensive for subpar food. Paid $20 for a torta and a pineapple water. Definitely not authentic Mexican food. My torta was soggy and a mushy mess. The place itself was dusty and smelly. Martin, the proprietor, seemed very combative and opinionated: when I requested a less wet salsa which is commonly known as pico de gallo in Tucson restaurants, he insisted that pico de gallo is ONLY a chile seasoned bowl of cut fruit (I know that to hold true in Sinaloa and some of the places in the north regions of Mexico. He did not want to listen to what I was requesting and was not interested in serving me a freshly cut salsa made out of onions, jalapeños, cilantro, etc.. Further, he is more interested in insisting that he is correct, rather than trying to understand his customers. He also argued about a tiny fuzzball on the lip of the salsa container that was served to me. When I pointed this out to him, he said you should need this anyway because there's oil in it. (he did listen to that much of what I told him before ordering, but he used it as an excuse to refuse to acknowledge that nothing should be served with a dust ball dust attached to it it) taking pride in your restaurant and extolling, your family heritage is wonderful and acceptable. But overriding that, is listening to your customers and acknowledging what they are saying. There was not very much business here as I went in, and I see that he has received some favorable comments from some of his customers. However, from my point of view, listening to your customers, overrides everything else, as does keeping a pristine kitchen, and never delivering anything that is not hygienic and clean to any customer. That just means look at it before you serve it. That was not done here when I was there. I always examine what is served and stop eating if I find anything untoward, spoiled, wilted, or contaminated. I only trust at a later time after I have experienced mini visits to a restaurant. I will not be returning here because he does not have my best interest at heart or my confidence. La comida esta muy bien. So this place is very quaint. It's not very spacious or well laid out, but the food is very good. My party arrived on a Friday and the service was warm and prompt. Our server told us that it was a BYOB venue, but they made some beverages in house like the horchata. While the horchata was probably excellent, we wanted some beers with Mexican food. The pizza establishment across the street sells to go beer. Next time I will plan better and pack my own beer. I was able to try some chips and salsa. I was suprised to see some beans on the chips, but it was a pleasant surprise. The salsa was excellent l, but served in a liquid dispenser, the kind you see for Maple syrup at pancake places. We had the opportunity to talk to the owner after dinner and he said this was to not waste as much salsa as having bowls. I can understand that as the salsa is well made and he needs to control cost. For dinner, I opted for three tacos: carne asada, carne con chile, and chicken mole. The tacos were very good, but the meats were excellent. Each of the three different meats were distinctive in texture and taste. The place is very quaint and has a lot of stories behind the decor. We talked to the owner about the monster from Frankenstein and the luchador painting. As I recall, the luchador was a legend and had never been unmasked, meaning, he had never lost. The monster from Frankenstein and luchador painting was inspired from a movie. Over all very cool place to eat with good food. The food was a good value and the service was good. Owner claimed he really didn't want to order... how would he know what our plans were!? Owner claimed we were harassing - we were astonished by this man's behavior to potential customers. Chingona is an understatement! Martin makes the absolute best tacos in a city full of great tacos. His salsas are flavorful, his beans are sublime, the chicken mole has incredible deep and mysterious flavors.... Cross your fingers that he's got some carnitas hiding in the kitchen! What a great find!!!!! Driving by and saw this cute funky place. We decided to stop and give it a try, as soon as we set foot in we knew we were in for something good. Great decor kinda like "Alice in wonderland meet Nacho Libre" with great rock music playing in the background. We ordered tacos, chicken mole and Carne Con Chile on corn tortillas... First of all, this was one of my favorite 4th Ave places to eat. 2nd, and the reason for the 1 star review, my husband miss interpreted the reserved parking in front of their restaurant and parked in front of the reserved parking sign (these were two parallel spots). He thought he had not parked in the reserved space. He thought the reserved space was behind him. It was an innocent mistake. We parked, thought we were out of the way, and walked down to Boca. We ordered, and walked back to our truck. As we got to our truck, a gentleman with curly hair proceeded to berate me. When I realized what we had done I apologized immediately. He continued to berate me. I tried to explain our mistake and he continued to berate me. He was saying things like, "This is COVID", "I rent those spaces", and how wrong I was. I tried to tell him over and over again that I understood, felt awful, and even offered to pay him for our parking. I kept telling him we felt awful for our mistake and that we understood the struggles of local businesses. That's why we grabbed food from 4th Ave instead of one of the corporate restaurants. We try hard to support our local businesses. He did not care, he just continued to berate me. I apologized again, and again, but it wasn't good enough for him. Again, I apologize for our mistake. We think very highly of our local businesses. It deeply saddens me that the gentleman decided to berate me and assumed we did this out of malice, instead of speaking to me and have a little understanding that people make mistakes. Unfortunately, because of the gentleman's choice to jump to conclusions and berate me, I doubt we will ever patronize their establishment again. This really makes me sad. We are supposed to be in this together. A lot of us are going to make mistakes while learning how to navigate our new world. I was thinking more like 3 stars for the food but the cool setting and the friendly staff really made it go up a star. My parents and I went there for a quick lunch on a Wednesday. We all ordered the same thing: carne asada, fish, chicken mole and carne con chilli. My favorites were the chicken and the carne con chilli. The asada meat was a little tough. They brought complimentary chips and beans to start. I though it was a nice change from the chips and salsa. I had their tamarind juice, it was delicious. My husband and I stopped in with my 19 month in tow. Great food and they have a perfect plate for toddlers. High chairs available as well. Customer service was more than great! Atmosphere is definitely unique, combined with Martins fresh take on his dishes is quite refreshing. It gets old pretty quick .... the same mexican food all around. Martin makes some pretty excellent mexican food at his Comida Chigona. Today I had the Chicken Mole Tacos. These were great, with slightly thicker, homemade corn tortillas. The mole sauce was spicy but flavorful, and the chicken was tender. Comida Chingona is an interesting place. The interior is dark but the walls are covered with some pretty cool artwork and posters. The staff and owner are very friendly and outgoing; the friend I was with really enjoyed chatting up restaurantours. My friend had the Carne Asada Torta which he devoured quickly and con mucho gusto! He indicated that it was delicious. Everything about the Chingona says quality and care. The ambiance might be a little "scary" to the unadventurous, but don't hesitate. We stopped at a place down the street, it had a 30 minute wait time, so we left and wandered into Comida Chingona. The place is quite a scene, so we were surprised to have a great meal at a reasonable price and would definitely return. That said, the comments on other reviews about Martin are accurate. At first I couldn't figure the guy out...like when I asked the prices (not printed on the menu) he seemed to take offense and (I guess) insulted me...like I said above, I wasn't sure exactly what he was saying. But we got past that and I figure he's just pretty unfiltered...he said he's been doing the restaurant thing for years and maybe he's just developed a short fuse. Anyway I just came back at him and he settled down (a bit!) and brought us our food. As above, it was just great. And as mentioned by others, no beer or wine service...bring your own or buy it across the street. So...if you're looking for a quiet peaceful meal, this may not be the place. We stopped at Martin's Comida Chingona during the Fourth Avenue Street fair. It's a small spot but offers a diverse menu and fun atmosphere. There area several paintings, for purchase, on the walls that are interesting to look at. It is a bit small inside but there is also a small outdoor patio to enjoy your meal while you watch people walk up and down fourth ave. Martin's is right in the middle. We ordered different types of tacos and a bean, cheese and rice burrito. The tacos were street size and the burrito was HUGE. Everything tasted great. Wanted some Mexican food from somewhere different. This is a tiny place off of 4th Ave. I walked in and was so super casual I didn't know if I was suppose to check-in of just sit down. I finally saw an employee and she sat me down with the menu and explained it a bit. I decided upon a burrito and a Mexican coke. The put the rice and beans inside the burrito (it is described on the menu), but that is not usually my favorite but I decided to roll with it. It was very filling and tasty. It is an open air restaurant which works well in the cooler months in Tucson (when I was there it was one of those days). Not sure i would go there on one of days that rival Hades though. For dessert they had empanadas. I was so excited. So I asked about them and they were all out except for the pumpkin ones. I am not a pumpkin fan so I had to skip the dessert. Was very disappointed. You would think during COVID you'd see a sign or have this part of your business organized. We walked in just to see if we could get someone to seat us and the owner yells at us in a very accusatory tone to get out because no one is allowed inside. I politely apologize and tell him that a sign or hiring a host would be better than yelling at potential customers. His response "we are a small business." Oddly enough, the rest of the restaurants on the SAME BLOCK all had signs and clear directions and someone waiting tables and attending to new customers. Assholes don't get my money, COVID or no COVID. The previous reviews also mention the owners attitude as aggressive and off putting. Instead of owning a business, invest that money to be a politer person. Probably the best beans you will ever eat. We were kind of weirder out they drizzled the beans on the chips they bring out to the table. We were wrong. Those beans were extraordinary. Had a very bad experience with the Owner/Chef. When we walked into the restaurant, it seems that he was angry with somebody (a patron), and his colleague/assistant was explaining to him that he should not be angry. Then when we asked for a table outside, he went into a rant which took us aback. He clearly does not recognize that the restaurant business is a hospitality business. Good food prepared by any chef can never taste good if the good food is served by unhappy staff. And this chef seems to be the owner! So we walked out. Martin's came highly recommended to me after my girlfriend ran into the owner. We knew we had to check it out when we heard that everything is made from scratch in house. Love those kinds of places. Anyhow, when we sat down we were greeted by some tortilla chips with pinto beans. These were delicious. The menu featured lots of tostadas, sandwiches, tacos, and burros like you'd expect at a Mexican restaurant. The tostadas looked the best so I went with those. I don't normally order red meat dishes but our server recommended the carne asada one. Couldn't have been happier with it and the unique flavors. I really haven't had anything like it before. Martín has been running his restaurant for 20 years and 2 months and he has the recipes down cold. The tortillas are his abuelas recipe and are almost as thick as a gordita but thin enough to fold. I had a carne asada taco and two fish tacos. The abundance of carne, fish, queso, beans and vegetables filled me up so much I didn't have room for postré. Martín is truly a Chingon Chef. I thought I was done eating until Martin brought the flan and chocolate cake dessert. Thankfully, he brought two forks so my son helped me. I know I said the Mission in Scottsdale was good but Martin'e is CHINGON, which on the Mexican colloquial rating system is a 5 star. Eres un Chingon de Chef Martín.
