Wonderful work! Eta is incredibly friendly and I loved working with her. I called ahead to make an appointment which I highly recommend! I went to her for alterations on a formal/floor length bridesmaid dress to let out some seams (far too tight through bottom half) and she worked serious miracles in 3 weeks for me! The dress now fits perfectly thanks to Eta. She also tightened the seams on the top half of the dress. All of this cost $55 which I think is incredibly reasonable with just 3 weeks notice. After I ordered the wrong style bridesmaid dress for my friend's wedding, I needed a real-life fairy godmother. The dress was almost 12 inches too long and needed to be let out around the waist, and there were fewer than 3 weeks until the wedding to get all that work done. I spent a lot of time searching for a tailor to make sure the dress came out perfect, and going to Martha was the best decision. I showed her photos of how the dress was supposed to look and she mirrored them perfectly, and she had the dress done with plenty of time before the wedding. It was on the expensive side, but she does high quality work and is also one of the sweetest people ever. I originally went to Martha's Alterations because of the positive reviews online and she did not disappoint. She was so complimentary and brought awesome suggestions. I brought my wedding dress with a tough request to shorten the straps and add a bustle. The straps have gorgeous lace detail that didn't allow for an easy cut and see. She creatively shifted the entire strap and added the bustle button, but she took the time to take some of the extra lace and cover the button. She is wonderful. I highly recommend her for all your day to day alterations and the special ones :) While I was there for my first and second fittings she was professional on the phone and great with her walk in customers. Because Martha was so highly rated on yelp, I thought it would be worth the 35 min. roundtrip drive to try her since I had three items to be altered and one was brand new. WRONG. Martha looked "put out" that I had entered her shop, because she had to come out from the back room where she was pinning a dress on a client who "had an appointment". I waited patiently, and when she came out she quoted me a ridiculous price ($45) to take in the sides on one of my tops. She said, "You'll probably want to go to _______ (some other) tailor instead, because I'm expensive. They use cheap labor, but I own my business and can charge whatever I want to." Not sure whether she was rude because she wanted to get back to her pinning, or because my small projects weren't worth her time. I drove back to my own tailor who did a nice job altering that same top, for $18. read more

I had a wonderful experience at Martha's Alterations. I bought a dress online for a formal wedding, and (of course) it did not fit at all. I loved everything else about the dress, so I thought I'd see if some alterations might help. The staff figured out what was wrong with the fit immediately and offered very reasonable solutions. The dress was ready on time and fit like a glove. The staff were very understanding of my unpredictable work schedule and were very flexible with the times I could pick up the dress. I was so happy with the work that I brought in a second dress for alteration as well. Again, the alterations on the second dress were perfect --now I don't have to wear 4 inch heels! I would recommend calling ahead for an appointment as the shop can be pretty busy. Also, they do not accept credit cards. Well worth every penny, though! read more

I took a bridesmaid dress to be altered and the experience was wonderful. I kept having to reschedule due to health issues, and Eta was more than understanding. She was always more concerned with my health than the appointments. The top had to be taken up and the hem had to be shortened. It wasn't cheap, but was reasonable. The dress came out beautifully. I just got my wedding dress altered from here. I asked for an estimate when I brought my dress in but was never given one. I didn't need a lot done to my dress so I proceeded to show her what I wanted done. For her to take out my bustle, hem the bottom, and tie/pin up the back of my train cost $300!! To my surprise she ONLY takes check or cash. Luckily I had the cash in me, but when I asked for a receipt, she said it would be an additional $24.50! I thought she was joking.. she was not! Even had attitude when I told her that I thought she was joking. She said," no girl, I have to pay tax on it if I give you receipt." I couldn't believe what I was hearing!!! Not only is she charging an absurd amount for alterations but will tax you 24.50 if you ask for a receipt. Because heaven for but she's a law abiding person and pays taxes on her business ( like everyone else has too..) I will never go here again. I will never refer anyone to her. I strongly suggest anyone reading this doesn't go here either! read more

Will never return. 10 trips for a wedding gown fitting of a previously unaltered dress, every single week for over 2 months and the dress was ultimately not altered correctly, including uneven inner seams, unfinished and uncapped wiring within the dress, incorrect length causing myself and others to step on the dress the entire wedding night, overlapping and torn lace, folds in the waist of the dress where the fabric was not evenly altered (a large significant fold captured repeatedly in photographs while standing at the altar). She was not capable of telling me honestly the wedding dress alterations were beyond her capabilities and skill level. Now post-wedding trauma of having my dress tulle ripped out the entire wedding because of everyone stepping on it due to her improperly altering the length, I'm having the dress restored to its original condition at a different tailor. Interpersonal skills do not compensate for lack of professional tailoring skills. read more

Martha has raised my standards for what it means to be a 5 star. I am new in Dallas and one of the first things I needed for my new job was a fantastic tailor. I had purchased several end of year suits online that were way to big to try to save money. Martha exceeded my expectations on every level. Literally, my suits look well over $500. As a matter of fact, I cannot even call her a tailor. She is like a suit magician, a complete artisan. She has a keen eye for how a suit is supposed to look and she can keep the shape of it for you. She doesn't just pull it in at the sides and say "here you go". Instead, she carefully pins it in a way that keeps it looking just how it was designed to look, unless it was designed to look cheaply, in which case she fixed that for me too. Seriously, I love her. I love her as a person, I love her work, I love her deep commitment to her customers looking good. She completed both suits in less than a week to expedite it for the important occasion of my first day. She always calls me "my love" and "darling", she is an incredibly warm person. This really does matter when you have someone doing your measurements. She takes the way you look in your clothes incredibly personally, which is the most important part for me. So, if I could make yelp magically grow a bonus star for the most amazing experience/results/person-ability ever, I would do it in a New York second for Martha. read more

Martha Martha Martha...I feel so bad to have to write this review, but I was not pleased at all with the dress she shortened for me. I came in with a dress and a skirt to be shortened and Martha was the nicest seamstress I've ever met in my life. I felt in good hands the entire time I was being measured and when I came back to pick up my items, I was confident that everything would be great. It's too bad that I tried the dress on while there and realized how uneven the bottom of the dress was. When I told her that it was uneven and didn't look good, she told me that I didn't tell her I wanted the dress even. I just don't understand what seamstress would expect their customers to go in saying, "This dress is even and I'd like to have it shortened, while keeping it even and not symmetrical. Please don't make this dress zig-zag in appearance". I was so upset that the dress looked the way that it did. I then tried on the skirt I had her shorten, and although the skirt wasn't completely even, I didn't say a word because it wasn't near as bad as the dress was. I asked Martha to fix the uneven dress, but after thinking about it for a day, I called her to pick up the dress because I didn't want her making it worse than it already was. It wasn't a cheap dress and I wanted to get the dress from her and bring it to someone else at that point. My bill for the messed up dress and the skirt was $60! I couldn't believe it when she told me the price. I paid her the $60 and walked out knowing I would never return. The only good thing is that she's so so nice! Good luck to all! read more

Martha's has been my go-to tailor for the last couple of years. Ethyl (who owns it but most people just call her Martha!) has done impeccable work for me-from bridesmaids dresses to taking in the sleeves on my leather, cashmere and denim jackets. She has also done custom curtains, drapes and the crib skirts and pillows in our nursery. She is very reasonably priced and will work hard to meet any deadlines you give her. Her service is out of this world, she tells you how much she loves you, teases you about bringing her "more work", and is just an overall pleasure to do business with. I've used her 5-8 times at this point having different men's clothing from hemming business slacks to blue jeans, and recently Ethel been taking up all the "extra" fluff out of the back of my long sleeve dress shirts as well as the arms. I've never written a review but want to save others from being ripped off by this place. It is a very unprofessional shop - She doesn't give you a ticket listing your alteration requests and does not post her prices. She said she knew how to alter a lamb skin suede jacket and when I picked it up she had stitched the hem and the sleeve hems - it looked horrible. She overcharges and Your clothes are not pressed when you pick them up. She doesn't call you when they are ready to be picked up and she only takes cash. All red flags.
