I was pleasantly surprised that I like this place as much as I do. This is one of those times when it's best not to judge a book from it's cover type of scenario. Domaine Serene, it is not. What it is though, is really pretty cool. It looks a little divey with old, run-down tables and I'm down with that. Funny signs behind the tasting station that really do look like they belong in a dive bar. But here's the thing: the folks running the place are sweet as all heck and they have some really good wine which is why you are there. There's no fancy gift shop or anything fancy at all...but the wine. Remember why you are there. It's all about the wine folks. Being on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge you will find different wines than the usual, boring pinot noirs that do so well in the Dundee region. Sorry folks, pinot noir is not my thing. Big, bold reds, now, that's my thing. I tasted several varieties and approved of them all but the tempranillo was off the hook. One more thing, if you are hungry, you'll notice that it smells really good in here. I did not partake but the BBQ pulled pork was very, very tempting and prepared there by the proprietors. Holy GOOD GOD I/WE love this place! It's a few minutes off the main road but so worth it you won't give a flying crap. The pours are generous, the wine is good and get this..... they serve crunch CHEETOS as the snack. If the owner, Ron, isn't there is wife will be, and maybe a couple grandkids, and they are all nice nice nice. Stay, drink, BUY, eat cheetos and be on your way. I was pretty impressed. This little winery is off the beaten path but definitely worth the extra 5 minutes you need to drive North from the 197/14 intersection. I have been to Marshal's multiple times. Every time I go there its like being welcomed by the family you always like hanging out with but don't get to see very often so you make the best of your time with you're with them. This is not your typical snobby winery. They serve Cheetos's as palate cleansers for God's sake! Ron Marshal is the patriarch of the winery and is always in good spirits, filled with educational information about his wines, and clearly loves what he does. Let's just say this place leaves a lot to be desired and really not worth the drive, even for the most intrepid travelers. There was about 18 bottles on their tasting menu that they wanted you to get through, but after barely managing to get through a couple of them we had leave. They have pretty amazing Merlot. Very fruity, very direct, with a little twist in a delicate way, leaving smooth finish at the end. We loved that simple taste, and simple is not easy. Cheetos as snack is a great treat, but somewhat blinded my tongue for a bit. It's a great place to give a short but worthwhile visit, definitely. read more

I came here about 6 years ago and was blown away by how cheap the wine was and we bought some after our 5th or 6th winery. Recently I went back and it was a sobering experience. I called to make sure they were open and a lady answered in an at-home fashion. I thought I had the wrong number because she said hello and I had to ask if she identified herself as the winery. They were open..... We arrived and we approached the entryway of the tasting room but the door pushed open with lights out and looking very abandoned. No one was there. We turned around to a dog barking at us and the lady who (lacked any social and/or business skills) pointed to the door as I asked again if they were open. She kind of grunted and went in, not looking at us. She turned the lights on and asked what we wanted. Mind you, there were about 16 opened wine bottles on the bar she was prompting us to try. She dumped a half finished bag cheetos (which they were famous for) into a bowl and we meekly asked for a flight. Apparently all 16 bottles were a flight option for $10. The going rate for tasting in the gorge. Who knows how many moons have passed while those bottles have been open. It was a ghost town. And every singe bottle was beyond terrible. Worst of all, the dump bucket for reject wine was not within reach for us all. Tear!!!! This could have been a scene out of Easy Rider or Deliverance. We hurried our few tasting so to not offend and got out of there. Really bad!!! If there was a half star, they would get it. I'm just glad not to be in a freezer box somewhere. I love this tasting room! Mandi D described it perfectly too! You taste wine in what feels like a basement rec room with it's low ceilings and casual, mismatched furnishings but it's not actually a basement at all. The wines were good and I LOVE the cheetos rather than water or oyster crackers. The woman who poured our wine was friendly and knowledgeable without being pushy or snobby. I've tasted at over a hundred wineries and this was one of the most memorable experiences I've had. Definitely in the top 10 as far as the complete package. If you're out that way, be sure to stop there for a great hour of fun! read more

This place ROCKS.. Off the little 2 lane. We stumble in the door, really housy-house place. Friendly, neighborly style. We chose our samples and got a full pour! About then we hear a band tuning up in the Garage, through the dining room & around the corner. It was Labor Day. And Wow BAM! They were fabulous torn up grungy and totally capable. One minute Wayland Jennings the next Pink Floyd. Knocked our socks off! We stayed four hours. Lots of folks hung around listening dancing to the music. But the wine! Oh do not underestimate the product., people. Just because it ain't some hoity toity upper middle class mcmansion. We will always go back for the absolutely smooth, delicate Black Muscat.. Our friends in the Pearl just about sh** their britches when they tasted it, it is so good. And the Sweet Anna, my fave. read more

Marshal's. When you're wine tasting in the Columbia Gorge near The Dalles and Hood River find your way to Marshal's Winery to try something a little different. They attempt a much wider variety of wines than the typical winery in the area. I especially like their riesling (which I've also found on occasion on the wine list at The Glass Onion Restaurant in Goldendale). Marshal's is funkier than the run-of-the-mill wine boutique, for example, they usually have Cheetos in a snifter on the counter instead of the more usual oyster crackers. read more

My favorite winery to visit in the US! After going to the Willamette Valley to taste award-winning Pinots, you realize the attitudes are SO different out in the Columbia Valley. Out past Hood River on the Washington side in the desert is Marshals WInery, operated by Ron and Lilie and their dogs! I've been going for years, and every time have such a blast there. Lilie and Ron make you feel at home, and make sure you get plenty of tastes of their delicious reds... my faves are Barbera and the Cab Franc. At the end of a huge tasting peppered with delicious cheetos and smoked salmon, you'll forget what your favorite wine was, but ROn will refill your glass until you've made your decisions. I've been there during crush and Ron has taken me back to see his crush in progress, along with sampling from the barrel. He has never met a stranger. I have sent about 10-15 very different personality types to go to Marshals, and ALL have loved it immensely. I can't think of anyone that wouldn't get some enjoyment and good wine under $25 here. read more

The Best Reds Ever...I have been enjoying Ron's wines for years now. I have lived in several of the NW growing regions and paid a lot for a bottle of wine, but never had any reds better than those at Marshal's. Cab Franc, Barbera, Syrah. Merlot and Malbec are all favorites. It's definitely worth the drive to Dallesport to enjoy this beautiful vineyard. read more

Wow - except for the dog and the decor, I'd say that everyone was visiting a different place. We wandered around, in the building, towards the outbuildings, saying "hello, hello" but couldn't find anyone. We wanted to purchase a couple bottles of Sweet Anna Marie wine, which we found downtown at the Canton Wok. Unfortunately no staff meant no purchase.
