I asked if I could get them at a discount since they had clearly been worn out and it was the last pair in my size. First he tried to tell me they were offering a 30% discount on all items, to which I replied that this item was not new, so I'd take it for an additional discount. He rudely replied that he could just order me a new pair, saying he would just send them back for being defective. Rude, dishonest, and not very smart.

They don't usually have sales on their running shoes, as they only offer a limited selection of the latest, most expensive models. They have a treadmill in store. This location has a small parking lot that is very awkward to turn into and out of on the busy street. I think it's really nice the employees don't make commission, so there isn't pressure to buy shoes on the spot. I tried on seven pairs of shoes and didn't find any of them to be very comfortable. For a store that emphasizes trying on a variety of running shoes, their return policy is not conducive to that. They allow returns within 30 days, but the shoes must be unworn. You don't know if a running shoe feels good until you actually run in them.

But that meant I needed to go to the actual Birkenstock store. Located in the Rice Village shopping area, parking is interesting. Go into the garage (level 2 or 3) across the street for free 2-hour parking. Otherwise, it's pay by plate or metered parking anywhere at street level. Easily located and nicely kept, there was a huge selection at this store. It was not busy at all on a Monday around noon, so there were multiple sales associates to assist you. They do not swoop in and "get in your face" like some shoe stores. If you want something, you ask for it. They check to make sure they do have it in stock and then out it comes. Tried on what I came for, walked around a bit in them (since they are sort of stiff initially) and took the plunge. Everything is done via email and a hand-held device (sort of like a restaurant). Super easy to check out with your new Birks packaged in their box and placed in a large, sturdy shopping bag. Now, I know that Birkenstocks are not cheap. BUT. If you have a wide foot (as I do) and you want a shoe that will last literally for years, then they are so worth it. So I have no experience with heels of any kind. However, for highly styled shoes Jimmy Choo are one of the most comfortable manufacturers. I can't wear Manolo Blanic flats so I don't know how those compare. However, Jimmy Choo are more comfortable than Chanel or Christian Louboutin. I also like Miu Miu and Loewe shoes.
