We made a reservation to Marjorie weeks in advance to celebrate our dating anniversary after many raving recommendations from friends. We viewed the menu several times and were really excited for this experience. We also frequently drive by this restaurant on the way home and the atmosphere looked amazing. Just to get it out of the way the food was spectacular. The server was personable and welcoming and interacted with us when taking our order. That is where the two stars come from. The issue came to our overall experience. When we arrived I noticed that there was a large group in the main patio and some other patrons at tables around them but it looked pretty full. While the server was grabbing menus we stepped out of the main door and across the apartment courtyard I notice a few tables setup in front of another business entry way. Guess we we were sat, so much for a reservation. I had a great view of a cement wall and a bright red "No Smoking" sign. We were also in full view of any resident of the apartment and also had a constant phone ringing when someone would call up to a resident, mostly food deliveries. Then the only other table that sat in our area was seated directly right next to us, with plenty of other open tables that could have spread us out more until other potential diners arrived. There was only one server for the restaurant from what I could tell, I know he did our best but our total dining time was just under 2 hours. His attention was mostly taken away because of the large group. I would have tolerated all of this especially due to COVID, I know adjustments need to be made but I was hoping an early reservation mentioning that it was our anniversary would get us a good table. $150 meal for eating in an apartments entry way did not meet my expectations as a guest. Again, with all of this I would not be writing this review. What gave me the tipping point was when my girlfriend had Marjories website open on her phone and pointed out that one of the guests at the large group table was the owner. So now I know why we were bumped and definitely know that we were not a focus as customers. On top of all this the group was continuing to get larger quite honestly would have fit better in the area we were sitting then the restricted patio. We've been here twice now. First time we had burgers at the bar which was a good time. Recently we dined here and all ordered entrees with several appetizers. The food portions were so minimal and it was pricey for what you get. Needless to say we left hungry. We mentioned to the server one of the untouched plates was not very good and her response was "oh". Rather than...oh I'm so sorry...can I get you something else or take this off the bill?" It's a little over-priced, but all the food we got was delicious. On a Tuesday, we had no trouble being seated and their outdoor section is really cute with heat lamps, so we were warm enough. To drink, I got the raspberry Rickey, which I really enjoyed. It tasted good, but was still a strong drink. I'd highly recommend the peach burrata as an appetizer. A nice place for hosting a birthday dinner with the oversize dining table in a private room (which also has a private restroom in the corner)! My bestfriend hosted a dinner for 15 people on Friday night with last minute reservations. Marjorie was able to accommodate and also let us arrive 15 minutes late without a problem. We were greeted by our server in a timing manner and drink orders were taken shortly after. I appreciated the service she brought to our party and was very patient. The drinks on the menu were overpriced honestly. I am not sure why a simple cocktail can cost $15 but I guess this is rated a higher cost per person when it comes to dining. My other friend and I decided to share our 2 orders to get a feel of the food they have at Marjorie. We ordered for starter the tall grass baguette with house made butter. For entrees, I had the Ricotta Gnocchi that has asparagus, english peas, morels- it was done really well although the gnocchi was a little too mushy. My friend and I also shared the Grilled Caesar salad that has white anchovy, parmigiano reggiano, croutons and we added chicken to it. Can you imagine the chicken add-on is $10 more, making the salad $25. Whoa there! Lol. That was a bit much but the salad was enjoyable. I mean our dinner wasn't very elaborate- the rest of our party ate burgers and simple dishes. The part that frustrated me was the cake cutting fees that added $7 and $2.50 PER SLICE of cake that WE brought in... That's kind of ridiculous don't you think? If you were having a birthday party and you brought in your own $100 cake and to be charged $2.50 per slice you gave out on top of the slice cutting fee each person had to pay at the table. That's quite unfair, you could've bought a new cake with that cost! The large but intimate room was a warm welcoming space with beautifully draped walls and wonderful mood lighting. There was seven of us and we were hungry so we began with several of their starters that made the vegetarians, vegans, and omnivores happy. - Tall Grass bread basket with house made organic butter and cold press olive oil and aged balsamic - Miss Marjorie's Steel Drum Plantain Chips with pineapple, avocado, tomato, and chaat - Mediterranean Mussels Meunière with white wine, garlic, shallot, butter, and parsley - Burrata with heirloom tomatoes, arugula purée, basil, and grilled baguette slices Everyone enjoyed every single bite and if you enjoy the plantain chips, you can buy some to take home. And for the record, you WILL want to buy some for later. We moved onto the next course and for our entrées, our group ordered: - Carrot risotto with ricotta - Carlton Farms pork tenderloin with spatzle, Brussels sprouts, spiced apricots, and apple butter - Grilled St. Helen NY "Pavé", pomme Anna, chanterelles, carrot, salsify, and mushroom purée - the True Burger with House Grind St. Helen's beef, caramelized onions, aioli, local greens, house pickles, confit tomato, frites, and organic harissa ketchup plus white cheddar and bacon And for extra sides: - herb + fromage blanc spätzle - roasted Brussels sprouts - pommes frites with harissa ketchup and aioli In addition to being beautifully plated, all the dishes were cooked to perfection. I enjoyed the pavé medium rare and the roasted vegetable accompaniment was perfectly cooked. I could have easily enjoyed an entire bowl of the chanterelles. Despite all the food we'd already eaten, we decided to order three desserts for everyone to sample. - Valrhona chocolate cake with chocolate ganache and roasted strawberry tarragon ice cream - brioche bread pudding with bourbon caramel, toffee, and cream - house made sorbet I dislike hyperbole in food reviews but no words can quite describe the beautiful harmony of that dense bread pudding with its rich bourbon caramel and sticky bits of toffee. DAMN! It's wonderful. The rest of the table loved the chocolate cake and the sorbet, and some folks ended up ordering another bread pudding because it was too good to share. Our waiter was phenomenal, always checking on us without hovering. As we ordered drinks throughout the evening, I had a couple of the Starvation Alley Metropolitans, a Cosmopolitan plus Aperol and cranberry juice. When I asked him for a drink recommendation, he suggested a Dark and Stormy which was excellent also. Without question, Marjorie gets five stars. I'd give them six if I could. Donna (the owner) stopped by to ask how we were doing. Before she left the back room, I pulled her aside to compliment her chef and our service that night. There is way more bad so maybe start on a positive note. There was nothing good. JK. The fries were good, my friend who got a burger enjoyed it. I think that sums it up for good. The duck was not good at all. I took one bite and was like... nope nope (similar response from another colleague). The server asked if I liked it and I had to be honest and said no. Gnocchi... more like no-cci get it? It was mushy not well cooked and the pea sauce that accompanied it was... a hard pass. Steaks were cooked incorrectly but were good even though they were overcooked. THE VERDICT: Allegedly there was only 1 cook that night and there was only 1 server. So I can understand the pressure they were both under to deliver and that is why I am not giving a 1-star review. However, 1 hour waiting for food that in no way satiated our hunger? That is a major problem. I cannot in good conscience recommend this place, but I do hope that it was just a bad night and that we were the exception and not the rule. read more

A friend and I came here for dinner for restaurant week 2018. I understand restaurant week is an opportunity for restaurants to really share and show off the the best they have to offer and those extra special seasonal dishes. My friend and I felt the opposite here - the set menu was frankly quite disappointing in taste and portion size. I'm giving 3 stars for two main reasons: (1) that underwhelming sadness when you realize you can cook better than the meal you are given and (2) a restaurant that skimps on portion sizes for a menu intended to showcase their best not only reflects poor hospitality but also a severe lack of confidence in their dishes and respect for what they serve. The Place: Quite intimate, but appealing. I would say I enjoyed the restaurants aesthetic far more than its food. Seating can be a bit cramped, so seating groups of 4 or more may be tricky and would need a reservation. That said, I would not recommend coming here for their food. The Food: We got the 3 course dinner menu set for restaurant week coupled with its recommended wine pairing, the bill came out to to be around $53 plus tip for each of us. I ordered the squash soup, seared coho salmon with lentils, roasted cauliflower and fennel purée, and the prickly pear sorbet. - The Soup: Surprisingly not the worst dish of the night, but definitely not noteworthy by any means. - The Salmon: As a pescatarian, I have had my fair share of botched seared salmon. Their salmon, a pitiful 2x2 inch steak, was clearly not "seared" - it was quite apparent that their pans were not hot enough at all. How do I know? The skin was soggy and peeling off, and while it was edible, it was not cooked evenly. To properly sear a salmon, you need to start it off on a high heat to really crisp that skin before moving it to cook all the way through. Or better yet they could have just baked this salmon and avoided this whole catastrophe. This was by far the worst salmon I've had from a restaurant. Call me pocky but I feel like their chef should have had some ounce of know how - especially seeing as this salmon costs the same as the entire restaurant week menu on normal days. If a chef can't properly prepare a staple of their main menu, even a reduced sized portion like the one we got for dinner, they shouldn't bother having it on the menu in the first place. - The Sorbet: I didn't care much for the sorbet as it wasn't outstanding in any way, and I must say it's not that hard to mess up a sorbet. I would say my favorite part of my meal was the cookie that came with it. I'm definitely never returning to Marjorie. Godspeed to those who do. read more

Underrated! You must check this place out. It's funky, deceptively spacious and the food and drink excite the tastebuds. I came here for Valentine's Day dinner. There was a Prix Fixe menu which can be a bit limiting sometimes. In fact we almost left because of it but we were so glad that we stayed! Also because we got there before 7pm they reduced the price of that menu which I thought was really awesome and unique. Obviously to encourage us to leave before the major rush occurred but who cares, I did not feel rushed at all. The music selection is all over the place (variety wise) but is reminiscent of a crazy playlist of all your pandora stations combined. It's fun. One of my favorite features is the bar that is set a little lower than street level so you can watch people's feet walking by. This always feels cozy to me. The food: started with the Watercress soup which was so vibrant in color and taste. Then, the steak tartar with a (if I remember correctly) charcoal dusting? It was...interesting but certainly different in a good way. It cut through the richness of the meat. The risotto was sadly disappointing mostly because I thought it was going to include rice in ADDITION to the leeks, but the substance was the chopped leeks. Left me hungry and kind of sad because I was in the mood to indulge in some major carbs. I'd like to try this place again on a non-celebratory night for sure, just to explore the other options on the menu. Finally, the drink: The Liz Approved. Super duper cute place in the Capitol Hill area. Parking is a little hard to find here, but you can get lucky in the residential areas. Sara was our waitress for the night and she's awesome! I ordered the Oxtail Ragu with Ricotta Gnocchi and it was a bit oily, but the flavor was rich and delicious! I loved the plantains with guac...and the bartender makes a stiff old fashioned. When I took a sip of my mojito (which was tart), I began to have misgivings about having dinner at Marjorie, but I ended up being completely wrong. The food is fresh, well made and can be imaginative. The staff here is very accommodating, although it could be because we dined with some Marjorie regulars. Either way, we loved the plantain chips (the best), the beet salad was good (a little on the bland side), carpaccio (?), fish, chicken, pasta. I wish I could remember all of our entrees, but we were all very satisfied with our dinners. It was all tender, juicy, well paired with their respective accompaniments that there wasn't anything lacking. Whatever fish I had, it was perfectly made. I took a leap of faith, because it came with fruit in the sauce. I usually hate mixing sweet with my savory, but the sauce was light and didn't interfere with how good the fish was. The seating might be a little cramped and seats a little stiff, I wouldn't mind coming back and dining here again - if not just for the plantains! read more

A few weeks ago, we grabbed dinner with another couple before a show. Since one of my friends is vegetarian, I made a reservation at Marjorie, given the plentiful vegetarian food options. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were immediately greeted and walked across the alley to be seated in what seemed to be some sort of event space. Normally this wouldn't be off-putting for me, except that the event space was rather dusty and a bit chilly as compared to the actual restaurant. That being said, the space was beautiful. As for food, I definitely made the right choice: the gnocchi was to die for. So soft and pillowy and delicious. It is clear that the kitchen knows what they are doing. That being said, my dinner companions were not as lucky. Two of them ordered the burger, which at an $18 price point, they expected to be substantial. Unfortunately, the patty was basically a glorified slider. In short, it was really disappointing. That being said, the risotto was good and balanced things out. That being said, even having ordered two appetizers, two of our party left the restaurant hungry. Sadly, given the small portion sizes, I don't think I would feel comfortable suggesting Marjorie as a dining option. That being said, the gnocchi was delicious and the ambiance is lovely, so this place definitely has potential! read more

The Scenario: your phone rings and some of your favorite people want to get together for dinner and drinks. You're thinking, it's 3p on a Saturday afternoon and there's no way there's going to be a table for 8 at any respectable food venue in a city that chews up and spits our mediocrity at a breakneck pace. Still, you've got to try. These are people you'd love to impress and spend time with. With a little luck and a stroke of grace you manage a table at Marjorie. You've walked by a handful of times always thinking to yourself, "What a quaint little cafe." What you don't know is that "the annex" seats an additional 36+ diners in a space just across a breezeway from the main dining room and that the menu packs some powerhouse flavors. The Experience: Much like a market fresh sheet, I'm greeted by a full page of craft cocktail specialties. Variants of many of the usual suspects: negroni, stormy, etc. and decide on the Paris Manhattan. Made with the traditional bourbon base but kissed with a little St. Germain. The bold Manhattan's fruity little sister. Easier on the tongue but still full of the familiar flavor. The conversations are starting to percolate and appetizers start to arrive. First up, Buratta... atop a crispy kale with a mysterious and tantalizing flavor you can't quite place. It's vanilla oil. The smoky combination of being crisped in a pizza over with a real wood fire and a sprinkling of Maldon salt, the vanilla is a welcome surprise. The creamy buratta and the earthy squash culminate in a uniquely rounded experience. Highly recommended. A few of the menu staples begin to hit the table including the house favorite: crispy plantain chips seasoned with a Caribbean spice and used as a vessel to carry the delicious tomato, avocado and shrimp ceviche. Also hitting home for me was a dish of Hama Hama manila clams. Steamed with saffron, fennel and tomatoes, I truly enjoyed the integrity of the sea-filled flavor and rustic feel of the dish. By now we're on our second round of cocktails and the topics of conversation are livelier than ever. The warmth of the soulful dishes are inspiring memories of travels all over the world and everyone seems to be planning their next trip. Out came the entrées. Before I tell you of the mind-blowing chop I had, let me remind you that the true mark of greatness for me is not a delicate pan sauce, mound of spritzed micro-greens or even perfectly roasted vegetables. It's in the respect and integrity that a chef pays the protein. "The Chop" as it's listed on the menu is nothing short of a marvel. Double-cut and treated perfectly to a medium finish. I know what you're thinking, and before you make the mistake of fearing for my life, trust that this chef knows her pork and the people supplying it. It's been 48 hours and I'm still alive. Albeit with a slightly higher priority for some extra gym time this week. In addition to the perfect pig, I was blessed with a smattering of apple-sage bread pudding and roasted Brussels sprouts that had the perfect bite to them. Finally, as if the night could get much better, the lemon chiffon cake we shared for dessert was delightfully stringent and acidic, sandwiched around a berry puree and served with a sweet and creamy whip. Capping the night, Chef Zephyr Paquette came out to thank us for coming and helped us in selecting some wicked vinyl to spin on the turntable before departing. So I didn't get the full experience but it was a beautiful one nonetheless. I love the outdoor tables under the...awning? Vine scaffolding? It's so romantic. Can't wait to take someone special on a date here! The staff was wearing gloves and masks and sanitizing regularly so that made me feel so much more comfortable as I'm kind of a hypochondriac. I got my food and took it to a nearby park but the walk was torture cuz the food smelled so good! I've never had collard greens mixed with tomatoes but it was pretty good. The Jamaican jerk chicken had so much flavor with all the herbs and spices it was rubbed with and I hate sweet potatoes but the ones that came with it made me dance in my seat. This was a great place to spend our 8th wedding anniversary. The outside seating was perfect and intimate. The owner came over to chat with us before dinner was served and our host, Richard, was delightful. The chicken was grilled perfectly and we didn't even eat it all because we wanted to save room for dessert. We were not disappointed. The ambiance is great - eclectic vibe, records on display in the bathroom and the outdoor patio is probably great in the summers. The food/menu is where it gets tricky for me. I still have no clue what the theme is. Right now you can find Jerk Chicken, duck breast, burgers, plantains and chicken tikka masala on the menu. I got the jerk chicken - it was 33 bucks so I have $33 expectations and they were not met. Food was meh my first time is meh again. I want to love this place but just not there yet. read more

Everyone ended up getting burgers... Which I thought was okay...it wasn't the most amazing burger but it was pretty good... I liked that they used watercress instead of lettuce. It is a nice cozy place, we were given the option to snuggle in the corner on the couch as that looked the apt place for couples, since we were friends we chose a table. I loved the lighting , the host , the vibes of the place. We chose to stick to the restaurant week menu as it was interesting however I couldn't resist the reviews on their special banana chips. I sure wouldn't miss it and my friend decided to try some cocktails. The chips came in first and we chose all three dips and it was divine. Every particle of food that came to our table was polished. It seldom happens like this with me. It was such an hearty meal and my tummy thanked me for the experience. I strongly recommend you to visit the place. I sat at the bar with my wife and our friend. We had the plantain chips, pizza, french fries, and dessert. We also had a mixed drink, beer, and wine. The food was great. A true redemption tale: I remember eating at Marjorie a number of years ago and being not so impressed. I don't remember what it was I didn't enjoy, so I won't hold it against them. After all these years I went back and had such a great meal I regret staying away for so long. I confess, I don't really know the back story of this place but as soon as you look at the menu, it's apparent that Caribbean cuisine is their specialty, so we went straight to their classics: Plantain chips (with some particularly impressive dipping sauces), Jamaican jerk chicken (the highlight was the sweet potato puree base), the steak (I only sampled off my partner's plate, but it might be the best restaurant steak I can remember), and the bread pudding (a good end to the meal but not a standout compared to the rest). Prices are on the high side here, but I found the service to be on par with the price. It's definitely not an everyday dinner kind of place but a good treat for a special occasion. read more

Excellent food. Had the buratta which was perfect, the gnocchi (also perfect), and the lobster mushroom risotto which my wife loved. All the dishes had an excellent blend of flavors that complimented one another. The cocktail I ordered called Dark and Stormy was excellent, the pear cidre my wife ordered was subpar. The host was very kind, and noted our names and said happy anniversary (my wife must have mentioned it when she made the reservation). All in all we had an excellent evening, but our server was pretty awful. Having worked in the service industry previously, my wife and I always do our best to be kind and sympathetic to our servers. However, the woman who served us was trying to be kind but made a lot of passive aggressive comments about other tables, and was fairly rude. I think she may have been the only server on, and the restaurant was very busy. We will probably give this spot another chance because there are a few menu items we'd still like to try, but for the price, the service would really need to improve for this to be a consistent spot for us. read more

This was one of the weirdest restaurant experiences I've ever had. I was here for my dad and uncles birthdays, and we were here for 3 hours. Mostly because the service was so incredible slow and unhelpful. Almost every meat dish we ordered was undercooked. Chicken was raw (which they took off) and steak was also way under done. We only sent back one steak dish, but only because the waitress seemed so irritated with us that we were afraid to ask for both to be redone. To be seen whether or not I get food poisoning from the raw chicken. They gave us 4 free desserts instead of crediting our weird entrees. 2 stars because of the very generous wine portions. I came with a group of friends celebrating a 50th birthday. We ate family style, meaning they would bring a dish out and everyone would share it. While the food was absolutely delicious and beautifully plated, my boyfriend and I had to leave and get more food for him because there simply was not enough food. This meal broke down with tip to $80 per person so the undersized servings were really disappointing. Came here for restaurant week and ate from the normal menu too. The dishes are just not well thought out and not well executed. Staff isn't rude but they aren't caring and attentive either. Felt abandoned a few times, waiting for the staff to come and help. I came here a few years back and didn't find it great. I agree can I give them another shot and now it's done. Have always enjoyed dining at Marjorie, however, it had been a few years. We were thrilled to find they had an outdoor table available on short notice. Our waiter was A++++ - attentive, friendly and helpful. The jerk chicken skewers and the burrata with peaches and grilled bread were absolutely delicious. The halibut with black lentils and broccoli was innovative and beautifully plated, although the halibut was a bit overcooked. Otherwise, a perfect dining experience. read more

On July 27 we had reservations at Marjories for dinner for a party of three outside. We were staying downtown in Seattle and took a Uber to the restaurant. Upon arrival I noticed the restaurant was approximately 10% filled. We asked the Host/ Waiter for a table outside away from the street. He indicated he could not give us the table we wanted because it was a table for four. You should know that the tables in question were all the same exact size all he had to do was move any chair to make a table for three to four.. He made no effort to accommodate us or say he was sorry or give us any other options. Instead he wanted us to sit at the table near the sidewalk. As a New Yorker we have been to many fine restaurants and most if not all are willing to accommodate its customers. We got the impression take this table or leave. We were looking forward to some soul food, after eating at so many other restaurants in downtown Seattle. He made no concerted effort to accommodate us in anyway, Consequently we had no alternative but to leave, which resulted in us standing on the corner for approximately 10 minutes waiting for a Uber to take us back downtown. On the way out I couldn't help but notice the sign on the window; "Black Lives Matter, the treatment I received seem incompatible with the sign. I couldn't help thinking about the song "hit the road Jack iand don't come back no more" I was surprised that the restaurant with only 10%! capacity did not try to Accommodate us. We never had a chance to enjoy the Soul Food! I personally would not recommend this restaurant. Poor service or lack there of and poor customer service attitude. read more

You know that restaurant you go to for a special occasion where you end up wishing you had a bigger stomach? Hell, maybe even a second stomach? Marjorie is that place. There is no wrong item to order here, but I do highly recommend the pork. So many amazing flavors, and beautiful presentation. For desert, I'd recommend the bread pudding AND the beignets. I can't believe this was my first time here, but what an excellent choice for International Women's Day! We started with the plantain chips - large size (more dips) - which are perfectly made. (Maybe you didn't even know that was a problem in the states.) Then the duck meatballs were a perfect starter. My friend, who had never tried duck, was wary, but ate her whole portion and commented on the pleasant citrus notes. We each ordered an entree and tried a bit of the other. I got the gnocchi (made in house to perfection) with broccoli rabe and flavorful tomatoes, and she the risotto with mushrooms. I ate too much. And can't wait to try more when I go back. read more

What a hidden gem! Super cute place, fantastic atmosphere, great service. Appetizers were tasty. Fish main courses were EXCELLENT. Melt in your mouth salmon and perfectly seasoned branzino... Great flavor combos. Portion sizes look small when you first see them, but it's actually perfectly sized. (Enough to satisfy but not so much that you feel gross afterward...) LOVE! read more
