We enjoyed our first visit here. We happened to stumble in here following my dress appointment next door at Dress Theory, and I'm glad we got the chance to check this place out. Hopefully, we'll be back for brunch or something similar to explore the area a bit more. I liked the efficiency and relatively friendly vibe we got from our waiter. Our server was kind enough to suggest his favorite dish on the HH menu, which we got and loved. You can't go wrong with the Crab and Artichoke dip. They have all the cozy vibes you wouldn't expect from this boujee area. Sadly, I wanted to order more but ended up cutting our visit short after a few patrons sat next to us. They seemed to excrete the most horrid pork/meat scent, but it wasn't their food either because they only ordered drinks. If you're looking for an Irish bar in Madison Park well, this one is (literally and figuratively) at the end of the line. I've popped in a few times over the years, most recently after wedding dress shopping with a couple of friends, and it has never disappointed. Good beer, fast service, affordable appies...I mean, I'm not sure what else I could want! They even have a nice happy hour, which makes the inevitable hunt for good parking worth the hassle. Is the place a tiny bit run down? Maybe a little, especially for this upscale part of town. But it's not exactly in dive bar territory yet. If it was remotely on the beaten path to anywhere, I'd definitely pop in here more frequently! As it is, though, this is my go-to watering hole when I find myself at the end o' the line in M-Park. read more

They treat each guest as family. They also have AC so that is a plus. Please come and see for yourself. I've had Clam Chowder from San Francisco to Nova Scotia, and my new favorite is McGilvra's! I ordered it in the sourdough bread bowl for the full experience, and wasn't disappointed. The chowder was full of tender clams, potatoes, carrots, celery?, and tasted like full cream. And that bread bowl; I couldn't stop eating it- fresh & delicious. Two others in my party ordered the chili, and thought it was great, but would prefer no corn. One had a Cuban, and would give it four stars, reporting a better bun could improve the rating. Our server, Sophia, was absolutely adorable, attentive, thorough; five stars! Coffee was good. Guinness was a generous pour, and nice brewed iced tea. Overall for service & food, we'd give it 4.5 stars. We'd all definitely go again. read more

Stopped by for a drink and this was exactly the type of place that we were looking for. Cozy, friendly bartender, busy but not too loud. We got Irish coffees and the bartender brewed us a fresh pot of coffee because he didn't want to serve us old/stale coffee. That's some good service! I haven't been to a real Irish bar since I lived in New England. This was wonderful and definitely hit the spot. Parking isn't the easiest but it's not impossible. If you don't mind wandering a bit, it's wonderful. We went here after wedding dress shopping, and the staff was friendly and prompt, and also offered (solicited) opinions on some of the dresses. The appetizers were delicious and served quickly, and were piping hot. There is no shortage of choices on the menu and it's worth spending happy hour there. It is an adorable place and feels divey, yet clean, and I very much enjoyed our time here. You can't go wrong! read more

We arrived early for our reservation at Sushi Suzuki and decided to get a drink here. Sitting outside was nice. Ordered and promptly got our drink and really never saw the waitress after, until I asked for the check. We stopped by here for a drink after dinner down the road. They have an ample patio seating area with views of the lake - lots of folks with cute pups make for good people/pet watching! They have a good offering of pub food and drink. We ended up staying way past sunset and getting hungry again..glad we ordered the baked brie - it was a huge platter of a sort of bread bowl with brie in the middle and a cranberry jam type topping. After twenty minutes or so the food still wasn't out - they probably should have updated us on the status of the food since it was the end of the night and they weren't very busy. Anyway this dish satisfied our hunger and we enjoyed the wine and martini here. I would say the only suggestion would be for less of the sweet topping as it detracted from the delicious brie. Came in on a Thursday afternoon lunch just as they opened. It was a chilly day - at least by my standards - so I quickly took the hostess's offer to sit near the fireplace in a booth. I enjoyed the atmosphere, calm and quiet. Many reviews note long wait times with inattentive waitstaff. I certainly noticed the longer than usual wait times but our waitress frequently checked in with us with apologies on the time. She was great - gave fantastic recommendations, made small talk with us, and had a warm sense of humor that helped the time go quickly. I ordered whisky crab bisque for an appetizer and the Philly cheesesteak for my entree. The whisky crab bisque was phenomenal - savory, rich, big chunks of crab. I could have lost myself in that moment it was so good. The Philly cheesesteak was also very good! The hoagie roll was soft, the meat tender, ooey gooey cheese, and a solid au jus - which isn't typical for a cheesesteak but I love au jus so not going to hear me complain! It came with tater tots. Crunchy on the outside, piping hot on the in and too many for me alone to eat! I also had a Moscow mule which was served in a tall glass and was solid. Great service and food! We went on a sunny Saturday afternoon and sat on the front patio (it's a great spot to enjoy the view and people watch). My friends and I got the BLTA, taco salad, and I got the pretzel bites appetizer. Everything came out in a timely manner. Dogs throwing up everywhere. They let them in the kitchen. Wtf?! This place needs to be shut down. So disgusting. The bartender knew the dog and the dog's owner. They walk in, the dog owner puts the dog up in a bar stool, it throws up all over the bar and she lets the dog go to the kitchen to use the kitchen sink for cleanup. One slice of corn beef, possibly a slice (?) of Swiss cheese and a couple of shreds of sour kraut slathered in several tablespoons of off the shelf commercial Thousand Island dressing does not make a reuben. $17 + tax + tip. This place was my pandemic staple. Open decently late, allows dogs, has outdoor seating and pretty damn good food and good drinks. I love their coconut shrimp. They have a purée spritzer that is so so good. Definitely a good spot to get a warm drink in the winter (they normally have a Toddy) and then go for a rainy walk on the beach. PRO TIP they offer slushees to go. Do with that what you will in the summer when it gets hot. read more

The salad was an interesting take, the sandwiches were made with provolone which I liked, but the soup... Oh my, the soup was so good. Solid pub food. I would've given this place one star had the server not been so sweet; therefore, the additional star is for the friendly service. She was awesome, especially on a crazy night like St. Patty's. My friend and I came here for the green festivity, and we ordered green beers which were Pabst (so better than Bud). The bar scene, as expected, was loud, lively, but fun. I just wish there was more room because the bar area is really small, and there is only one stall per bathroom for both sexes. The food though was horrible. My friend ordered Irish Nachos, saying how much she loved them, but was so disappointed once they came out. It really looked like dog food with a dollop of sour cream. The chicken was too thinly shredded and was dry. Also, we thought the Irish Nachos would be potato wedges, which they weren't. They instead were potato chips. I ordered the Reuben Sandwich with Cole Slaw, and again, it was disappointing. The corned beef seemed to be cooked unevenly, as parts of it were crispy/burnt and parts of it were soft. Also, it was thinly stacked, so there was not enough of anything, like the corned beef or sauerkraut or russian dressing. I was also surprised that it was served on whole wheat bread instead of marbled rye. I don't recommend eating here. Just come for the draanks. read more

One of the lunch servers (Friday morning, June 2) was extremely rude and unwelcoming. It was especially disheartening as it was a very special lunch with a great friend I was visiting on vacation and I picked out the restaurant after much deciding and planning (plus I grew up on Capitol Hill and used to go there often). The waitress rudely sat us, and it was quite clear she had no interest in doing her job with any enthusiasm or professionalism. We decided to just get up and leave before ordering, and she very condescendingly yelled "have a nice day" on our way out. It was the best thing though, because we went to Madison Park Bakery up the street and got the most delicious sandwiches and cookies, and chips and soda from Red Apple and had a wonderful picnic on a bench at the beach right down the street I will never even try to go back to McGilvra's again, but I will definitely go back to the bakery. read more

I like jumping over chairs to get to my part of the table. Came here on a Sunday afternoon with a group of friends. The place was deserted, and we asked to be sat on the patio since we had a large group of 7 to enjoy the view, but instead of sitting us the main part of the patio they stuck us in the corner of the entry way after putting together 3 tables awkwardly in the corner where the chairs barely fit leading us all to climb over each chair to get to our spots. The reasoning "we have a dinner rush, so we need that seating to be open". Odd. Wouldn't you want to take care of the customers you actually have there at that moment? While we were there not 1 person had actually come to the place...Shocking. I mean it's just an irish bar, so why hold it to regular standards? Well, every glass we got had lipstick or lips stains on them, the server didnt come out for about 20 minutes to take our simple order which went from a lets eat and drink everything, to this place sucks lets just get a bottle of wine, so instead of spending a few hundred dollars on liquour and food we had a $21 bottle of wine and I had some soup n salad. To their benefit the cesar salad was pretty good! The whisky crab bisque soup was ok a bit bland, but they had real crab in there, so i appreciated that. Overall though from a business standpoint it was just weird. You have a large group of young professionals looking to spend a good amount of cash at your establishment for drinks and food, but instead you make questionable decisions to negate that. It's disgustingly disappointing that I came there with friends early afternoon on the 5th of July. We all ordered breakfast. I ordered the Migas plate. Upon our delivery of food. My order came cold from kitchen to table. I don't really care to complain but I let the waitress know this. She took my plate and brought back hot food. It was ok.. not sure what was wrong until hours later..my stomach was killing me, I felt nauseous and well I spent the entire night with projectile vomit. It's been 5 days and I'm barely recovered. I thought to call the restaurant and speak to a manager or owner. But a girl answered the phone, As I told her about that day I was there and got violently sick from their food. She just hung up on me!! I tried again but call just going to a VM that has no space for recording.. rude and inconsiderate establishment with mediocre food if you can stomach it! Ehhh....food is ok. The waitress was good. I had a scramble which was very watery. The others liked their corned beef hash and fish and chips. Mimosas were nice. I didn't want toast with my breakfast and the waitress said I could get extra fruit instead. She later came back and said the manager said fruit was more expensive than toast so she would have to charge for extra fruit. It felt a little petty. On July 7, 2019 I was dining at Mcgilvra's Bar and Restaurant when I found a fly in the drink they had served me; before I had even taken a sip. When I asked the woman in charge that evening for a replacement her only reply was "That's what happens when you eat outside". They would not take my drink away as if I were expected to drink it. Their outside dining area had a couple of spots where flys had bunched up because of their unsanitary practices. I would like to file a civil complaint on Mcgilvra's for endangering the public due to their conduct. Please send me the proper forms to initiate a civil suit in district court where I can also be allowed punitive damages if the court sees fit. This was embarrassing to me that Mcgilvra's would shift the blame to me in this situation and endanger my health over something so small as a drink because of the cleanliness of their eating area. I will never eat there or anywhere near that area again. Their conduct is abhorrent and dangerous to the public in my opinion. The 3/5 star rating of "A-OK" fits the bill for McGilvra's. Not bad..Not great. We had the cheeseburger which was fine. I think the worst part was our beer was warm :( On the day we came in, they seemed pretty understaffed. I'd give them another shot but will not be my first choice in the Madison Park area. read more

Had dinner and drinks here last night. Really loved the spot at other visits. Service is 3 stars though- we waited almost an hour for salads and this wasn't even the busy hours... salads probably came out at 8:00pm. I could've made my house salad on 30 seconds or less on god. Overpriced, bland food mixed in with a loud hockey game does not endear us to return to this virtually empty overpriced space. They would not adjust the volume at all and the manager was downright nasty. Hummus must have come from a baby food jar,flavorless and overpriced. We will definitely not return here. read more
