Loved it! This is a great little place in Mesa. After leaving L.A. I didn't think that I would find a place this good. I see that Mariscos El Viejon has a great following. I never saw a restaurant turn tables like this place has. If you're looking for a place just to have taco and drinks or a nice dinner, then this is a must try. If I could I would give this place a 0 I can't believe my family meme era like this place they are the only reason I had to go in there twice, the first time I came in we went early in the morning on a Sunday all the kitchen workers were late so they told us we could only order cold stuff, it was a table of 4 and they served us all at different times about 8 min difference each plate ! I got a shrimp cocktail with tajin!!! Who puts tajin on a Mexican shrimp cocktail! Anyways they always charge with tip included my husband only orderd a tostada and we payed 45 for that trash, second time we were dragged in there again because of a birthday I orderd carne asada fries, because I said how can they possible ruin this ?! Well they did ! A lot of beans and fries only about 5 pieces of the smallest cut carne asada the nastiest runniest sour cream and a whole avocado on top not guac a whole avocado !!!! And no salsa ohh and kraft cheese ! Excellent coastal style Mexican restaurant. We can't say enough about it. We're natives raised in Yuma and spent time in the gulf most vacations, so we know gulf shrimp. The shrimp cocktail was great, with diced veggies just how we love! (Us stateside gringos do like a little horseradish in ours though, so I added some ketchup and imagined it was our family recipe). He had the simple butterflied prawns/shrimp, no breading. Messy, so get extra napkins. I had the beef/shrimp fajitas - lots of caramelized onions and 3 colors of bell peppers. Tasty put into great midsize flour tortillas! Beef was slightly dry - my ONLY 'mini-gripe.' Rice was awesome. Frijoles were decent to me, my hubby loved them, and he says my taste buds are off (true, for a few days now). If you hate traditional Mexican music, bring your earplugs. . Us gringos from border towns are accustomed to it. Just breathe and imagine you're in Ensenada, Rosarito, or Acapulco. Sad they were out of their famous dessert. By the way, they're hiring - still saying "No one wants to work!" Worried about Covid19? The waitresses wear masks as of June 5th 2021 but no guests were wearing them on this Saturday night. I stopped by for a pick up order of seafood soup. The menu listed the cost at $17 and I was charged $25. I didn't care too much about that because I would rather pay for something I thought I was going to enjoy. The soup was poorly packed in a flimsy container and was boiling hot. Not even ten minutes into my drive the soup top cracked open... they used the type of cover that is used in a McDonald's soda. The scalding hot soup cracked the lid. I called the manager Will and explained the situation. He offered to make another soup and I told him I wanted a refund. Will agreed. I arrived at the restaurant and asked to speak with Will, and another manager Ava proceeded to open the soup bag and accused me of dropping the soup on the floor and refused my refund. Started coming here about a year ago and each visit gets worse. The food is still good but the service is appalling. Used to be great, now the waitresses are bad. Last visit the waitress spoke no English. Asked for waters in addition to the the Coronas and got 3.00 bottled waters. She didn't understand or it's a trick. The portions are getting noticeably smaller each visit. The last straw was the prices on the check were not the same as on the menu. Uncool. We love this place, small neighborhood restaurant with great food...both the mariscos-seafood- and the traditional Mexican fare are excellen. The other thing that really makes it for me is the service. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. I wish I knew the name of our server during our last visit this past Friday, we had a table of 8 when the bill came we did not realize the gratuity was included so we included a 20% tip, the server came back a couple of minutes later to tell us that we were overpaying and showed us the amount that had already been added. I was so impressed by her honesty, she could have easily take it and kept the money. to me that's as important as the quality of the food. Another reason to keep going there! read more

My wife and I were discussing meeting friends for dinner, and I mentioned that we had been to a mariscos restaurant with them before, maybe we could do that again. I didn't want to go to the same place, but my friend Edgar said "You must go to El Viejon, it's really good". We took the recommendation and went on Friday night. It was super busy. We were seated right away at one of two open tables. The wait staff was certainly working hard, there were a few very large families there. Our server was super nice and warned us it might be a bit slow on food "we're always busy but everyone showed up at the same time". Okay, we're not in a hurry and we got drinks and chips/salsa right away. Margaritas are great, beer selection great. After a while we were able to order. Server super apologetic but we assured her we understood and we were patient. So, the staff was great. The food? Oh my! They have all the traditional Mexican dishes plus tons of seafood varieties, of course. The food was amazing!!! We had crevice cocktail for appetizer. I had tacos (shrimp, tilapia, smoked mackerel). Everyone else had a mix of tacos seafood and carne asada, and quesadilla (my non seafood wife's go to lol). Everything was fantastic, I would say those were the best seafood tacos I've had in a long time. Price? About $50-60 per couple before tip... awesome! My wife and I had our early lunch here on Sunday morning about 10:30 AM. It's a small unassuming place that gives you the impression it might be mostly take-out. It was opened about 5 months ago. Six small 4 seat tables and a counter, behind which is the kitchen. It's a friendly and clean place, and if there is a bathroom available, it must be somewhere through the kitchen, I'm not sure. It appears to be a "mom and pop" operation, I like that. This is mainly a seafood place, a very good seafood place! My wife had a strong desire to have a cheese enchilada, not a great idea in a seafood place. I "saved the day" by suggesting she also order a shrimp taco! She thought her enchilada was at best a 3 star dish. It came with a nice rice and average beans. I had a shrimp burro with a side of guacamole. My burro and her taco were fabulous 5 star items! We would return just for those! Wonderful flavor, lots of shrimp. Now I understand the word "Mariscos" in their name. The guacamole was fantastic, one of the best I have ever eaten! Did I mention their chips? They are the absolutely best chips I have ever eaten and they make their own. They were served with a thin salsa verde that I needed to add some hot sauce to. My wife was disappointed that they had no tea on their menu, just canned and bottled drinks. We asked for water and were brought icy cold 16 ounce bottles of filtered water. That was a nice touch. We had almost finished the chips and our waitress brought us another basket. I had told her that they were the best chips we had ever eaten. She was so sweet as to insist that we take some home, and had filled a medium sized brown bag with their chips and gave them to us! We enjoyed them that evening, they were so good. Wanted to go with 3.5*, but Yelp won't let me, so I rounded up. Tried this place last night. It's a small no frills hole in the wall place. They offer sit down (only about 6 tables) and to-go options. The girl working the counter was nice and attentive. They cranked up the music as soon as we sat down, but she offered to turn it down when I not-so subtly complained about it. They offer cans of soda and bottled water ( a pet peeve of mine) and there was only 1-2 people working the kitchen so food to table time was pretty slow. Prices are comparative with other mariscos places. Flavors would good. We originally tried the place out because I was craving 7 mares, but they don't carry it :( I had the seafood soup instead which she said was pretty much the same thing. It wasn't bad, but didn't have that 7 mares flavor I was hoping for. It came with corn tortillas. I wish they would've given me a choice of corn or flour, since I don't like corn tortillas. Tostada and campechanas were good. No complaints. First round of chips and salsa is free. read more

This place is the most delicious Mariscos in Arizona, The owner Alex is the Chef, he have many years of experience making Mariscos, the place is super clean, it is busy but the owner from the kitchen as he is cooking everything to the order he also supervises the place. The prices are very affordable for the high quality of seafood that they offer.
