The origami ceiling, lively bar, friendly staff, unique cocktails, fun bathroom, and photo booth in the corner made for an unforgettable experience. My friend said it was the busiest he had ever seen the place, and it was loud. But we got some awesome drinks that I swore I could've taken pics of -- the lighting was a little crazy, so I think I ultimately changed my mind with that. One was the periscope which was a refreshing and summery gin drink... And I think I tried the naked and famous too because I like mezcal. I had already eaten so I skipped the restaurant the speakeasy's connected to, but I cannot wait to return to Houston outside of a Con so I can really go all out on exploring. It was an amazing way to end my first night!

Our server, Camille, took our order and then would disappear for 30+ minutes at a time. At one point, when we asked where she had been, she simply said she was "walking around." Her overall approach to serving us felt extremely nonchalant and inattentive. The atmosphere also made us feel as though the level of attention you receive depends on how much you're spending--particularly whether you're purchasing bottles. The servers seemed more focused on creating a bottle-service experience than providing attentive restaurant service. It gave the evening a very transactional, "pay for attention" feeling rather than genuine hospitality. What really sealed the experience for us happened after we had already paid our bill. A host approached our table and essentially said, "Can you leave now? We need to seat someone right now." There was no gracious transition, no "thank you for dining with us," and no polite explanation--just an abrupt request to leave. For a restaurant with such a beautiful ambiance and good food, the service and hospitality were incredibly disappointing. Guests should feel welcomed and valued from the moment they sit down until the moment they leave, regardless of whether they're ordering bottles.

I also had a raspberry lemon drop with tequila that I enjoyed. We sat out on the covered patio since the group wanted hookah. The atmosphere was nice, although whatever was flying around out there ate me UP. I left with about 6 bites. My only little disappointment was the garlic sauce I ordered. I'm pretty sure I received the yogurt, cucumber & mint sauce instead, and I was really looking forward to that garlicky goodness lol. Overall though, I'd definitely go back. Next time I might just bring my own garlic sauce!

Botonica is a hidden gem for happy hour! Tuesday to Friday from 4-6pm all drinks are half off and…read moreall food items are 25% off! The inside is dark, moody, and has somewhat earthy tones. It gives me some apothecary vibes. The cocktail menu has a number of choices with strong Latin influence, with a strong presence of mezcal and tequila. All of the cocktails that we tried were not only tasty but also beautifully garnished. We also tried the picada board, similar to a charcuterie board, and it was bountiful! There were a number of cheeses, meats, fruit, olives, crackers, jam, and dried corn snacks. With the happy hour prices this is definitely a great value and a nice option to snack on with a group while enjoying some drinks. My only issue with Botonica is the parking. There is some street parking out front which can be hit or miss depending on what time you visit. You can also utilize the neighboring SkyHouse valet for $10 per their website. Uber might be your best bet.

As you walk in, you'll be greeted by the 70's/80's/90's bar music of rock/disco and chessboard floor pattern. Then you get your drink order from one of the many pleasant bartenders (or Louie) and sit either inside or outside and think to yourself you're the luckiest person in the world. So they specialize in three things: cocktails/liquors, cigars, and patio seating. When you combine all three of those, it's the perfect bar. Cocktails such as ol fashions and cape cods are plentiful here. I also appreciate they do a new york sour here which is an underrated cocktail. Cigars are sold here too and they have cutters and plenty of torch lighters to spark them up. Outside on their patio deck has plenty of seating with some of those heaters in case you houstonians can't handle the cold. Only gripe is I wish they had a larger wine selection as they only have bordeuax or a red blend. Not sure if they serve white wines either. But there's wine bars for that. You're here for the hard stuff or a quick beer, maybe a cigar, and definitely a peace of mind. That's what keeps me coming back!

So if you don't have a rezy I would suggest getting there at opening. I was hoping to see the DJ as they appear to have a good nightly line up but they were having a private party that night on the other side so the the DJ was only heard when the private room door opened. Otherwise they had a good Deep House mix going in the background. I forgot they the bartenders name, but he was attentive and whipped up some good ones. I started off with a Classic Gibson. You can go wrong here, but he made it perfectly balanced with the onion juice. I also added some spicy Blue Cheese Olives on the side which were unique and tasty. My guest had the fun drinks; Space Moon- the bartender described it as a balanced PB&J. It was just that!! Bourbon with a hint of sweet with some bitter from the Campari on the back end. Then topped off with a little PB&J cookie. The second drink was some Peach drink- I forgot the name- but it was also a whiskey drink topped with a peach gummy candy. The drinks sound sweet but they are perfectly balanced. Everything was perfect, we'll be back for round 2 soon.
