It's very nice and quiet up here! The staff are very kind and attentive. They start you with a consommé and then the small bread and strawberry butter. The food was all very good especially the ginger salad sauce and the truffle fries!! I also appreciate a place that puts a good amount of protein on a salad even if I got full lol. I went to Mariposa recently on a work lunch with my coworkers. It was very underwhelming to start off. None of us were very happy with our meal. I ordered an Asian salad and it only came with four pieces of shrimp, the shrimp was amazing, but there was still more left to be desired on the plate. My coworkers ordered other items and none of us were very content with it. Our server also messed up one of the orders and it took a while for her salad to be remade. The server in general wasn't the most friendliest. We were a group of seven, and we asked to see the menu for the dessert and instead she just verbally told us. This didn't really allow us to think about the options and it kind of put us on the spot being a large group. I think it would've been more helpful to have menus to look over the dessert. Overall, I was just very unsatisfied and would not return. Between the lack of friendly customer service and underwhelming menu I can't think of anything that stands out. read more

This was my second time visiting this restaurant located on the 3rd floor of Neiman Marcus in the Galleria mall. The first time I visited was several years prior and I noticed that some things had changed. The layout of the restaurant was different (smaller) but still very beautiful and they had a new menu. I made a reservation for me and my friend Danielle for 1:30p. We were promptly seated. We were given a tiny cup of warm chicken broth to cleanse our palate. I ordered The Brose' which is a mixture of Hennessy & Rose' lemon and mixed Berries. Danielle had the Rose' Refresher Sangria with peach nectar vodka, stone fruits, agave nectar, contrary and of course Rose'. (It's a very sweet drink if that's what you like). I ordered the soup of the day which was French onion. I love French onion soup and I try it everywhere I go. I love the flavorful soup with the taste and texture of the thick melted cheese and toast. Yum! The warm soft rolls were TO DIE FOR!!!! Served with a strawberry cream cheese spread, it was so delicious. For my entree, I chose the Mediterranean shrimp pasta dish and Danielle ordered the Cajun Shrimp pasta. Our table was very close to the bar and Ed was our awesome bartender. He was so friendly and wanted to make sure we enjoyed our cocktails. After our meal he wanted us to try a specialty drink he created which was a mixture of bourbon and an amaretto and some other spirits I can't remember but it was amazing. He earned his tip! I will definitely go back just for drinks because he was such a nice man and he can really make great cocktails. Our server was named Diane. She made recommendations for us from our drink selections to our entree. She was so nice. I took a piece of Italian cheesecake to-go for dessert. We will definitely make this one of our regular visits for cocktails and light lunches. Atmosphere is important and this cozy restaurant offers that times 10 over but when you add in the fact that the staff is charming and welcoming, it's makes the entire dining experience wonderful. Nice classy spot inside Neiman Marcus, kind of funny feeling thou. Food is really good, I had steak with veggies and it was good! I asked for chocolate flavor cake as dessert and took it home to realize it tasted like plastic I already sent a request to the restaurant so they can check weather cake is old or what. My server wasn't in the greatest mood so I'm not sure if I feel comfortable coming back, among few other things; she served a little cup of chicken broth (they do to welcome you) but I'd be nice to let me know in advance as I don't like chicken broth and I told my sever who didn't bother to take it away until I asked for the third time :/. She also didn't ask what term I wanted my steak until I told her the third time she came by. I also asked how to pronounce the name of a specific tea (which I forgot) and she seemed to be unhappy about my question. Space feels a little reduced, be careful carrying a big purse as you could be hitting people's shoulder. May be a good spot for a quick break from mall crowd . read more

A throwback to the old days, this Neiman Marcus cafe is still bustling with activity. Located on the third floor, it is a small relatively hidden cafe. Our seven lunching ladies met here for a noontime meal. We were fortunate enough to get the lovely round table in the corner. As Gretchen says, round tables are the best for a group; everyone can speak easily to everyone else. The decor is white and clean and very minimalist. I actually quite liked the overall look of the cafe. The service was good but nothing spectacular. I was glad they had black napkins, but I feel I should have been offered one originally since I was wearing black pants. I was glad they did have some. I remember being at a decidedly less fancy restaurant and being automatically seated with a black napkin and didn't have to ask. That's service. The first 5 people who arrived ordered and then the other ladies who arrived ordered after us. I expected the first 5 meals to come out together, but unfortunately one meal came out after everything. The monkey bread and strawberry butter is fabulous. It's delicious and worth getting at least coffee or tea in the cafe. I ordered the crab cake sliders with fries and cole slaw. The crab cake sliders were delicious and I definitely recommend them. The fries were strange. Some were cold and some hot. It felt like I had gotten the last of one batch and the first of the next. The cole slaw was icky and I left it untouched. At first I thought the meal wasn't substantial enough for lunch and to last me until dinner, but I was wrong. The crab cakes were dense with meat and really good. They are bigger than they look! Other's food looked good, but nothing was over the top wow. For the cost of lunch and the location, I expected a little more. I'd go back and get the crab cakes and possibly try some other items, but nothing is making me run back. The dessert tray did look tempting, but I had to be somewhere and couldn't stay to indulge. Make sure to bring your Amex, Bergdorf Goodman card, cash, or personal check. This is not as fancy of a restaurant as the Grille 5115 in Saks, but it is a classy, tasty and very pleasant place for lunch when you're at the Galleria and particularly when you are shopping at Neiman Marcus. My most recent visit was so pleasant. I met a friend at 12:30 pm for lunch and we somehow were so engaged in conversation that we didn't realize the restaurant closed at 3! We were still chatting away at 3:30 and the staff was too kind to tell us they were closed. I made a reservation, which was good because they were completely full. Service was just right -- waitress there exactly when needed, but not overbearing. I had a lovely glass of wine to start and my friend had a tea. They had a full summer cocktail menu available that looked good for another time. Some nice bread and butter was provided as a starter. I opted for the salmon tacos, which is apparently one of their most popular dishes. They were very fresh, good and filling. My friend had a sandwich and salad combination that she orders every time so it must be good. All of the food was very yummy and well-presented. When you check out, they give you a lovely chocolate mint stick :) And you can pay with your Neiman's card if you wish. A very solid experience and I look forward to returning soon. read more

Though I still love the complimentary warm monkey bread and strawberry butter, I must say that the quality of food seems to have declined since my last visit. On my last visit, I ordered a shrimp and pasta dish and it was out of this world. It was worth its $16 price tag. We also got seconds and maybe thirds of the bread and butter. That was so last year. Screech forward to this year and though I thoroughly enjoyed my company, my lunch was absurd at $14. I ordered the three cheese grilled sandwich, opted for lentil soup, and it also came with a small salad. Okay, that is a lot of food, but it was sadly mediocre by my expectations. I thought this was Mariposa! Where they take something like a simple grilled cheese sandwich and made it fabulous! Sadly, no. My grilled cheese had three cheeses (cheddar, swiss, and maybe mozzarella or provolone) and tomato slices. The bread was just plain wheat, not some fantastic brioche variety or sourdough, something unexpected, but perfect. The lentil soup was too salty. The salad was pretty good. I ended up turning into a "lady who lunched" and picked at it, though I did finish my sandwich. One simply cannot waste cheese. Our server was quite accommodating and that monkey bread and strawberry butter will have me rolling back, if I'm in the neighborhood. Night and day. Apples and oranges. That's the difference between the employees in Mariposa and the employees on the first floor of Neiman's. No, not even night and day or apples and oranges, more like night and oranges. I'm not going to delve into the horror of bad customer service that is Neiman's first floor, but older lady employees (fellow readers, pardon me as I address the ladies in black smocks), must you congregate and gab with each other and ignore shoppers...always? With snooty looks over your shoulders? I mention this, because I don't want anyone to have this behavior put them off their lunch or keep them from visiting a great little lunch spot. The employees at Mariposa are very gracious, and the setting is small, but pleasant. It's a place you should definitely visit, but if you're like me, just rapidly breeze through Neiman's. Do not loiter, unless you wander around the third floor. The menu is wonderful, and they sat our group at a ROUND TABLE. I am obsessed with round tables, so this was almost like a personal apology for having to endure the first floor. I'll explain. Round table equals egalitarian seating arrangements, you can see everyone without really having to turn your head. If you are at a rectangular table, especially with a large group, everyone must remain attentive to conversation flow so that people don't disappear into pockets of non-conversation. If members of your party are late, it is very easy to squeeze them in. Happens all the time, but since the table is round, no one is stuck with a weird corner or no elbow room. Back to the food, I hadn't eaten at Mariposa since the early, early 90s. Even though I was mildly distraught that the dessert menu had changed, I was glad to see the food was currently trendy. (If you've been to Hungry's in the Village, you'll understand.) I got the southwestern turkey pita wrap with sweet potato fries. Mine arrived last, even though I was the second to order, but this was my fries' fault. Very healthy and my fries were only very lightly fried. No grease, just a bit of olive oil. It was if I'd made them at home. The pita, although the healthiest flat bread around(?), fell apart when I added the Tzatziki sauce. Oh, it's all very tasty and exceptionally healthy, but probably not the most ladylike sandwich to eat. Emily Post would have stabbed me with her fork. I understand my second choice, crab cakes, were excellent. They offered sliders or just atop a salad. The other choices I left behind, there were about five I had to narrow down from, were a souffle and chicken salad, navy bean soup with sun-dried tomatoes, curried chicken salad, and a Cobb salad. If there had been an option to get a half sandwich or smaller salad with cup of soup, I would have been a happy, happy camper. As others have mentioned before me, bring your Amex** or cash. A debit card is a credit card (not plastic cash) as far as businesses are concerned, no exceptions. If you bring your check book, you must be over 80 years old. As others haven't mentioned yet, some servers in fine dining establishments in Houston (even the ones blue bloods frequent), don't offer dark napkins if you are wearing dark trousers or skirts. You must ask for them. Mariposa almost lost a star because one of our party had to request one. It gained the star back however, as they actually had some on hand. This restaurant is aptly named Mariposa. Like a butterfly, the place is tiny and beautiful, tucked into an alcove on the third floor of NM. I had forgotten about this little gem and I was more than eager to join some friends for a leisurely lunch. I'll admit, this was my first time at this location. I use to frequent the one in Beverly Hills years ago (yes, I know dah-ling it was fabulous) and really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. I arrived late and room was made at the table. I was served a cup of chicken broth and a popover while I took a gander at the menu. Several things caught my eye: grilled cheese sandwich, quiche, cobb salad, hamburger but I kept straying back to the crab cakes. While the sliders sounded interesting, I went with the salad. Two crab cakes served on field greens. The crab cakes were delicious! Dense, with little filler these babies are mostly crab. The dressing on the salad was on the creamy side with a nice garliky finish. The service was pleasant & unobtrusive, letting me enjoy the meal and the company without feeling rushed. Although Mariposa is pricey, they do give you quite a few little extras that make you feel like it was worth spending the dough. The way to go if you're a couple of lunching ladies on a little bit of a budget is to each get a cup of soup & split a salad. I got the queso soup...not hi cal at all, right? My mom got the chicken tortilla soup. Both were creamy, spicy, and satisfying. We split the crab cake for the salad, which is on a bed of dressed field greens, avocado, and tomato, and it's topped with a perfectly crisp crabcake with absolutely no filler. Just a generous serving of crab & a bit of breading. They give you another freebie when you get your check: a tiny peppermint stick coated with chocolate. Mall foods have done some major transformations over time. Department stores started offering cafes inside their stores to provide women an acceptable way to go out without their husbands. These classy establishments have turned into noisy food courts with jungle gyms in most malls. A few places, however, have tried to retain this remnant of elegance and Neiman Marcus doesn't fail to disappoint. Their restaurant, Mariposa, is on the third level of their store, tucked away between the haute couture items. Though a reservation isn't necessary, it can get quite crowded. The bar, fully stocked, is adorned with a line of tvs with the latest fashion show being aired. There's nothing better than eating at a restaurant with alarmingly thin models on tv to spark up your appetite, right? The tables are pretty close together, so be prepared for an intimate dining experience. Also, since they've crammed in so many seats into this small area, you may want to do your shopping after your meal so you have room to sit down. The food is actually pretty great, but completely overpriced--just what you'd expect from NM. It is a place to be seen and most of the clientele are way too dressed up for this to be just a casual dining experience. The service was fine, though a little slow. I'm just not sure it is worth the money, time, and snotty attitudes to dine up here when there are better restaurants just a few floors down (my favorite--the Oceanaire has better food for the same price AND great service--at the time of this review they'd just been named Best Service by the Houston Press). If you're in the area and don't want to deal with the food court, this is definitely an option, though not your only one. read more

Cute little restaurant and bar on the top floor of Neiman Marcus. I highly recommend making a reservation before hand... they get pretty busy, plus it is very small and it is usually filled with housewives taking a shopping break, taking up a table for 2 hours gossiping about which neighbor slept with which nanny. Maybe that last part isn't true but that is what I like to think when I people watch there. Once you are seated, they set you up with bread, strawberry butter and a shot of chicken broth. And that chicken broth was a nice, delicious surprise! Give me a double! As for the food, I've only had their salads at Mariposa. Their Crab and Shrimp Louie salad is always a favorite for me. They don't skimp on the shrimp or crab meat. Their Seared Snapper Salad is also very nice. Overall their service is great! My only "complaint" is that I made a reservation on Open Table and after dining at Mariposa, I received an email from Open Table saying I did not honor my reservation. I corrected that with Open Table but Mariposa should keep an eye out for that. read more

Think a classier version of the cast of VH1's faboosh "reality" dramedy "You're Cut Off" designer bags in hand with dear ol' granny picking up the tab, natch. The food is good. I had a turkey wrap with a side of greens. The veggies were fresh and crisp and the portions filling. The price is reasonable given the amount of food you get. One major issue I have is the payment policy. AmEx, cash, or check...that's it. Umm...what? I'm so sorry my pedestrian Visa causes you much disturbance Mariposa. It is super bizarro that McDonald's has more payment options than this upscale cafe. read more

Lunch at Neiman...it's the new Breakfast at Tiffany. And I want to be a regular here. Because regulars get a kiss on the cheek from the hostess and they do not have to wait for a table. Although I didn't really mind shopping during my thirty minute wait. The service was outstanding, and the food was fantastic. The Lobster Cobb salad wasn't really my thing, but considering how picky I am about seafood, I should not have ordered it in the first place. Everything else was splendid, especially the chicken sandwich with apples and brie. I would have stolen a basket of monkey bread on the way out if I'd seen one. I also loved jaunting around the Galleria with my to go bag from Neiman-Marcus, it's just something different. The food at Mariposa is always good. The service is also very consistently good. They serve monkey bread and chicken broth when you first arrive. The bread is so buttery and delicious - it's wonderful. Their salads are excellent, especially the crab cake salad. The desserts are also excellent. I think their key lime pie might be the best in town. The atmosphere is "ladies who lunch". They also often have models wearing different designer dresses walk around and approach the tables. read more

I joined 8 of my friends for a late lunch reservation at 1pm at the Mariposa in Willow Bend. The service was beyond terrible and the food was not as described. I ordered the winter shaved salad, which was literally Kale, pomegranate seeds, cranberries and grilled chicken. There were no avocados or brussel sprouts at all in the salad, even though they were listed in the description on the menu. The chicken was very good, but the salad was definitely lacking several ingredients. The service was extremely slow and the overall lunch experience took 2 1/2 hours. I am not sure if they were short staffed or if this is just the new norm, but there were absolutely no apologies at all. I will definitely take this into consideration prior to making another reservation. read more

They have a daily specials menu and a regular menu. I ordered Today's special: Ravioli with shrimp & lobster. It was very good. Large sized shrimp, and good size pieces of lobster. There were 5 large pieces of ravioli- 3 cheese and 2 vegetables. There was also slices of carrots and squash. The tomato sauce that accompanied the dish just made the dish. YUM!! Dessert: I couldn't decide between their caramel souffle or chocolate pot de creme. I got to try both. Caramel souffle: it was like eating an airy marshmallow cream. I did not like the texture at all. I was expecting a traditional souffle, and it came out served on a plate like a slice of cake. I took a couple of bites, and didn't like it. My server was nice enough to replace my dessert with Today's special. Chocolate pot de creme- I don't think it was fresh. I took a couple of bites and when I reached the bottom on one side, it was watery. There was water? In my pot de creme?? They also served it with 2 mini french macaroons- it was alright. I tried the three-cheese grilled cheese sandwich and tried to ignore the sideways glances from all the dainty ladies around me ordering salads and sparkling waters. Service was great from start to finish. I will admit that I think Mariposa is too pricey, and I normally wouldn't consider eating here for lunch. But I had a $50 Neiman's perk card, so my lunch was essentially free. I have been coming here for such a long time- At first, it was a weekend treat while spending time with my grandmother, aunts and mom... Sometimes it was a mid week treat, when we would come here on school holidays. I used to love feeling so grown up drinking my Republic of Tea mango beverage, and my queso soup and chicken salad sandwich. Now that I am older, I know that the grownups in the restaurant aren't usually eating chicken salad sandwiches, and are for the most part, not drinking Republic of Tea mango beverages . . . The service is amazing. The same people that were working there when I was a kid are still working in the restaurant. Their salmon dishes are really good as well as all their salads and sandwiches. The food isn't anything out of this world, but it is good quality food, and I keep coming back for their monkey bread with strawberry butter and their consome!! This time, my mom had to run home and was very ill all day and night. Was running a fever, had chills & says she lost a few pounds as well. Mom had ordered the crab-cakes. Mariposa is great! They have the BEST grilled cheese. It comes with tomato paste on the sanded oh and a salad on the side. You get to pick which kind of soup you want too. I have eaten here twice in my life. Once, years ago and the only thing I remember of the experience is that there were gnats flying around my table. I decided to give it another shot today. I'm so sad. I ordered the tea sandwiches and deviled eggs, which you would expect to be fresh. I had one bite of the deviled eggs and something was off. Mix high-end fashion with unique flavors and you have Mariposa, the little cafe on the third floor of Neiman Marcus. You will have to walk past the couture racks of Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Escada, Versace and the likes before you find the quaint little venue nestled away with the ladies that lunch. Make sure you make a reservation because it can get busy during the weekdays. Also, cash is king unless you have a Neiman's card or American Express. Lunch starts with a cup of Chicken Bouillon which warms the pallet served alongside fresh hot monkey bread and strawberry whipped butter. The service is always polite and the menu has some great light fare. There is an abundance of salads, fish dishes and soups to mesmerize your appetite but help you maintain your svelte figure. If you have a craving for dessert the Neiman's famous chocolate chip cookie is not to be missed. They will give you the recipe but rumor has it, it will cost you a pretty penny (as in the thousand$). The atmosphere is clean, well-lit and fashionable. I have to put this in my top ten places to eat in Houston.
