Hey all...so these are some of my faves clothes wise...men and woman. The fabric and quality if out of this world...they aren't cheap but not crazy expensive. And everything seems contemporary without being too trendy. The store itself is manned by a variety of different folks who are very chill and responsive when needed. Love the decor in the store..cool chestnut chic with good lighting, decent changing area and enough space to spread out..and not be crowded. An incredibly unethical business masquerading as some environmentally friendly sustainable establishment. They don't provide paper receipts claiming its for the environment, but then will get your mailing address from your credit card and proceed to spam you with wasteful catalogues every month. They will also spam your email with ads. I've opted out of the catalogs on their site several times but they continue to send them. It should really be illegal for business to use your credit card information to spam you. The staff at this location are also poorly trained and the whole thing is badly managed. read more

Do yourself a favorite and skip this Marine Layer location in favor of the Haye's Valley location. The employees here are lazy. I came in on a Sunday afternoon, the store was not busy at all and there was about 3 staff members working. Literally they were just standing there by the register and didn't even greet patrons as they walked in. Never a hi or a hello. Your main job is to greet people and assist them -- not stare at people as they walk around lost. I wasn't feeling the vibe at this location and it was completely different from my experience at the Haye's location and difficult to believe it stems from the same family brand. I would have happily bought my 3 for $100 v-necks from them had they said one word of welcomeness. read more

All made in China now. So disappointing. I ordered a bunch of items about a year ago. I was ok paying the premium because I remembered years ago their clothes were made in the USA, California even. Very comfy and the classic SF "casual but still cool and expensive and trendy" look. The prices are quite hefty, but the quality of the clothes is very good and they are built to last. One of the shirts had some plastic on it and I didn't want to pay $25 for expedited X Mas shipping for another one and so they all spent like 20 minutes at least trying to get it out. Nothing but [insert heart emoji here] for marine layer and their soft as a baby's bottom apparel. Clothes shouldn't be cheap and the price of $33 a t-shirt if you get 3 of them (3 for a $100) strikes me as reasonable. I know I might be going out on a limb here, but really when you're an adult you can't wear graphic Ts as much. Unless you're cool which I'm definitely not. 0 chill here. Terrible customer experience. It's expected that from time to time there will be shipping delays but when a customer reaches out to you saying they are frustrated about not being provided tracking info/updates and that the delays have gone far longer than other ecommerce brands provide. The customer service rep responded by saying she'll cross her fingers. WOW. That is so helpful to me and my frustrations ML. I really hope you improve these practices and remedy poor experiences instead of compounding the problem with attempts at humor when customers are upset. This is the response: "Keep me posted if there are any delivery issues but in the meantime I'll have my fingers and toes crossed! Poor customer experience and deceptive pricing. Ordered an item, marine layer canceled it saying it was out of stock. Only to see it on their website that day for $30 more. They then told me to just order it again at the higher price. Way over priced for acrylic clothes. Also not size inclusive. read more

Two things about Marine Layer... 1. Best basics that last a long time (I have had a few items I regularly wear that are still in great condition after years). 2. The fabric used to make ALL the garments at Marine Layer are both sustainable and eco friendly. Oh wait I forgot a 3rd thing, the prices are NOT ridiculous and they design clothes for men and women! I was browsing the pants and asked the worker what activity the pants are for and worker rudely said "it's for wearing". How rude is that??? Absolutely rude! We are just looking around. Absolutely need to rid of this employee for poor poor etiquette and inability to to her job. read more

Walking along Chestnut the other day, my eye was caught by a dress in a store window. Long, cotton-ey, simple, (nightgown-esk, if you will), I couldn't get it out of my mind. So I figured I would apply my usual retail rule: if I'm still thinking about it in 24 hours, I'll go back. Twenty-three and a half hours later, I waltzed on in, excited to try on this beautiful, pajama-textured outfit. The saleswoman was wonderful. Noticing my size wasn't on the rack, she quickly grabbed it from the back. Available without seeming obtrusive, she was knowledgeable about the merchandise and answered all my questions easily. Went in with the hubs a couple of days ago, and never wanted to leave! The fabrics are so deliciously soft and yummy. I am addicted to scarves, I have really sensitive skin, so I found heaven when I touched Marin Layer's scarves. I bought one, and the hubs bought a shirt. We were so impressed with the fabrics that we researched the company. These people care about their clothes, designs, and manufacturing process, and you can't get better than locally made. The next day I went in and bought 2 more scarves. I seriously want to wrap myself in these scarves and never surface. It's nuts. The staff seem really down to earth, too. The manager was very patient with me as I asked her several questions, many of which didn't have to do with the clothes but with yoga. Anyway, the color choices are awesome, they have excellent designs and quality fabrics. Plus, they're locally made, locally owned...it really doesn't get better than this place!! read more

Gotta love this store. And gotta love the Marine Layer clothing even more. The staff are always well-informed about their products. They definitely know what's up. I check this store out every so while. Downside is the price. It is decently priced for how high quality the clothes are, though. With the dollar signs up, and my wallet nearly empty, tough luck. The perfect t-shirt is right up there with a guy who knows the difference between inverse and converse and can fix shit: extremely rare, but worth the wait. Marine Layer gets my current vote, though. Unlike the dudes on here who (somewhat charmingly) balk at paying $30 for a t-shirt, I've sacrificed many a paycheck to my pursuit of luxury knitwear. C+C, James Perse, Splendid, blahblahblah - you name it, I've overpaid for it (I like to think I'm not alone here.) So far (I just bought em yesterday), Marine Layer's short sleeve v-neck and long sleeve crew seem to compete with the best of the best. These guys have done an awesome job creating their first retail space. While I am sad to see the loft go, this spot is money, and the release of their new shirts timed well with the finish of the store. It is great to see their selection of clothing increase.They just introduced their woman's line alongside many new options for doods. Plain tee shirts. Nobody does them better. Their Pima cotton and modal blend is baby bottom soft and the people are great too. I like clean and simple tees and this is the place to get them. Marine Layer is very good. I almost want to give it five stars because the people working there are very nice and yet not pushy. But, the threads can be a bit pricey at times. I got a zip that I love which has a little more wear on it than I'd like considering how long I've had it. That said, it's still a fantastic place. read more

I just wanted to add to my previous review. i purchased a few shirts for my husband as well as my brother AND brother in law(bro-in-law is hard to shop for). I only went in to browse and ended up walking out with 4 shirts. 3 long sleeve and one short sleeve. One happened to be on sale which was a bonus PLUS they were having a great buy 3 for 90$ deal. I totally scored. Everyone loved their shirts and couldn't stop commented on how soft they were. It felt good knowing i gave them a good quality and locally made shirt. Now the only problem is, everyone wants clothes from there ;) added bonus: they don't charge for bags since they are cloth and re-usable :) read more

Got a pair of pants, long sleeve shirt and shirt for the hubby last night. These three garments are so insanely soft it blows my mind. The pants, I'm wearing right now, are so comfortable and soft I feel like I'm in heaven. Just the dreamiest fabric. I like that you're sizing is starting to expand beyond super small to more regular. Please continue on this trend. On the same note, I have always found you women's button downs to run super small in the arms, shoulders and bust. Maybe consider an XL? The clothes are soft and comfortable. Unfortunately, the quality is crap. I purchased a t shirt and joggers there in February. The seems/threads on the joggers are completely loose and tearing out and the t shirt already has holes. With so many options available it is tough to want to shop here again given the poor quality. read more

We were at the bookstore nearby when we took a walk up the street and saw Marine Layer. Not familiar with the shop or the brand we took a look inside and liked a few items which were on sale. We actually were greeted by the clerks who were quite friendly and helpful. Read some other reviewers' comments about being ignored; that would irk me too. But maybe it was the day we went (Saturday) when other clerks were on duty. Hope our items don't develop holes as the T-shirts recent reviewers have noted. Amazing customer service team and return policy! My mom bought a shirt from my dad but it turned out to be the wrong size, and since I live closer to the store she gave it to me to return. She didn't have the receipt but I emailed the customer service team and they were extremely helpful, friendly and responsive. They sent me a return label and I was able to return the item and get an e-gift card which my mom can use to buy the correct size. Overall, very impressed with their level of customer service and I will have to check out their stuff because the shirt was really nice even though it was the wrong size! read more

Went to the inaugural Marine Layer Loft happy hour last night. I know the owner, so I admit I had an inside track to their new loft on Polk Street (across from Lombardi Sports). Definitely the most (only) pleasurable shopping experience I've ever had. A window lined loft, full size shuffleboard, good music, and most importantly a fridge with beers. The long sleeve shirts and polos are my favorite. Pre-shrunk, don't bleed, durable, and my g-friend (we actually just got married, but saying wife sounds boring) loves the shirts. read more

As comfy as clothes get! Seriously. I challenge you to go in there and NOT spend your first five minutes just feeling the shirts. I couldn't do it. I sent the rest of my time trying to part ways with different items so that I spend a stomachable amount. It was harder than I anticipated. Not only are the clothes insanely comfortable, but they are also locally made in San Francisco , which makes you feel good about the purchase as well. They primarily stock your basics for men and women (t shirts, button ups, Henley's, hoodies) but also have some other miscellaneous finds (pajamas, dresses, rain jackets). Their staple is the hoodie for men and women. They have a website with free returns, so you can pick up things where ever you may be located. I've found that the clothes run slightly smaller than their size, but that may just be my experience. If you're on the edge, I'd say yo start a size up.
