They raised their monthly fee and started adding charges for chemicals so it worked out to about a 25% increase. Overcharged for a drain and clean as well. I called Marin Pool Service as they are a local Novato business. I was having an issue with my spa heater and filter pump. Rebecca was super helpful when I called and actually scheduled to have the tech Mike come out within a couple hours of my call. Mike showed up and was really friendly and started taking a look at my spa. He fixed the problem, and let me know that my electrical outlet was not up to code and that he would not be able to service it again until I did that. Their quote was very competitive, and they were honest and upfront about our options in deciding between an expensive "hi-tech" replacement, and a standard "low-tech" pool pump. David Metzger is a lifesaver. He and his company were remodeling a neighbor's pool and I had asked him if he could come over to look at the work that our contractors had done on our pool. (I was very concerned that our contractor's workmanship was faulty and I was not getting an adequate explanation as to why some of the results look shoddy). He came over the very next day and spent 45 minutes inspecting their work and then explained all of the issues to me without charging me a dime. He gave me the peace of mind that I very much needed. He is incredibly professional, knowledgeable and easy to work with. I only wish I had known about this company sooner! Let me start by qualifying this review by saying that I have had both exceptional service from this company in the past and in this case, poor service. In this instance, I called for service on my Pentair Mastertemp 400 heater. I am not the ideal customer, I am in the trades and have replaced many of the components of the heater over the years and call when I am either short on time or have hit a roadblock in the troubleshooting process. This heater is in the latter years of the average life-cycle for these units (although all the electronics, mother board, etc. have been replaced). On this service call the technician simply removed the two side panels to "examine", said he saw some corrosion and because of its age, wouldn't recommend replacing any parts or further diagnosis because it might be a futile exercise. Maybe it was a bad day, maybe it was an upsell - but for a $185 service call, & having previous knowledge of the history and age of the unit, I would expect that you either state prior to the call, that you won't service a heater past x number of years, or, if you do, you won't guarantee that further diagnosis or repair might not completely resolve the issue. Because I was short on time, I called another company, explained which parts I had replaced. He performed further diagnosis, explained the chain of troubleshooting and replaced the High limit switch. Rather than an estimated $6500+ to replace the heater it was back in service immediately ($200), has been working perfect for a couple months now and may last another x months/years). The main point is that--especially if you are unfamiliar and solely relying on the professional advice of your service provider; facing a substantial repair/investment, you may want to obtain a second opinion before just blindly accepting the recommendation from this company. read more

We had been customers of Marin Pool Service (MPS) for many years. In recent years, MPS's rates and add on charges for products and services, which are typically included by other pool service providers have increased significantly. With the frequency of recurring services, unnecessary add-ons and mandatory extra services, it began to feel like MPS was taking advantage of its customers. We also experienced instances where MPS reps broke pool/spa related items, failing to take responsibility and then attempted to charge us for replacement parts for items the rep broke. Additionally, reps showed up on multiple occasions in our yard unannounced and without notification and continued to do so after repeated requests to MPS admin and to the rep directly to give us a heads up. We also experienced reps failing to review client notes about services and the location of equipment when there was a personnel change even though these are readily available in the app used by MPS reps. Finally, we started to witness a recent shift to inexperienced and overworked service reps. The one and only reason we have stayed with this service company is because of their manager, Robin, who started as our pool service rep before she was promoted into a management role overseeing other service reps. She was outstanding in every aspect. Her exceptional knowledge, experience, integrity, trustworthiness, customer service, and solution based approach were unmatched. She gave MPS credibility in the face of their otherwise increasingly concerning billing and service practices. Unfortunately, we learned that Robin is no longer with the company, so neither are we. It is not surprising that MPS upper management apparently did not recognize the value and credibility Robin brought to their business, which is unfortunate and shortsighted on their part (and is clearly evident to its customers). We strongly recommend steering clear of this pool service company in light of the direction they have been going with overworked, inexperienced service reps and ever-increasing rates and fees, which is no longer counter-balanced by competent managerial oversight. There are far better options out there. read more
