My true feelings about Mariano's are actually a solid "meh," but this place had something I wanted when I wanted it tonight, so I give them that credit. Otherwise, I really don't get the love affair most people have for this chain. Sure, it's nice people but the selection of stuff is not super high quality. For sure they permit GMOs and artificial ingredients. That bothers me. Here are some preliminary thoughts on this particular location:
Yes, it's new. Brand, spanking, shiny new. And clean. Very, very clean. But you know, it's only Day 2. Seems to be plentiful parking but I walked over, so that wasn't a concern. Outdoor seating is VERY nice. As in, wicker. A nice wood bench. Not sure if it's enough at lunch time but this evening they were all empty. Everyone was very attentive. Store personnel were everywhere and they were busy. It took some time, but I found what I wanted, which was good. Price was largely comparable to other stores around here...Now, this is the weird part. I go to pay, and the woman asks me if I have a rewards card. I say no. She then hands me one, after swiping it, and tells me that I need to go register it at one of the kiosks. There are about five kiosks and all of them were busy. So, I waited in a short line. One guy in front of me. I start looking at the card, wondering if there is a web address so that I can skip the line and just register at home. Well, there is none, which I found strange but the guy in front of me was finishing up, so I went up to the screen as a "new registration." Guess what the machine commanded me to do first? Swipe my DRIVER'S LICENSE. Seriously. Are you kidding me? How is a grocery chain authorized to gather my private information and driving record?? Needless to say, I walked away. But from the lines, it was clear to me that people were just willingly handing over their privacy in order to some day save a few bucks at Mariano's. Sorry, but that's just weird to me. Here we are, in a world where people are freaking out that the government is recording their phone calls and e-mails but it's totally fine if Mariano's knows who you are, where you live and if you've had a moving violation? And why do they need to know your birthday? I have never seen anything like that anywhere else. And even if you're totally ok with all of that-- what if you don't have a driver's license? I guess Mariano's doesn't like pedestrians? The whole thing was a little too Orwellian for me. I'm glad there is another store in the 'hood but I'm not going to be spending a lot of time or money here. read more
