My husband and I have been searching for good Mexican food since moving to the area and we finally found it!! The building is certainly nothing to look at (inside or outside) and the seating is very cafeteria-like but the FOOD...SO GOOD! The chips are thin and warm, the guacamole is amazing, and the cheese dip is the best I've had!! After spending hundreds, I got a bonus and was tapping the machine. The owner very rudely told me to stop tapping my nails on the game. The service has been very slow. Great meal. Great service. I stopped in with limited time knowing TexMex would be quick and they did not disappoint. I'll start where they start, with chips and salsa. The chips were fresh as was the salsa. Thick, heavy tomato chunks with a roasted flavor - delicious. Some of the menu favorites seemed a bit expensive so I went with a pick two. I ordered a beef mini-chimi which I do not understand how they consider mini and a chicken burrito. The problem was they delivered a beef burrito. Due to time and not being difficult I did not bring this up. I have no idea how they would have handled it. The meat was sauced and not bland as it is at many local Mexican restaurants. So, I heard from the grape vine that this location has excellent fajitas which I love. Had to try it out. But rather than have lunch or dinner, I decide on carry out. Well, not greeted by words; had to actually be the first to say something. One girl takes my money and the other just walks away like I have the plague or something. Well I am coming from work and not in the best appearance. Plus I am about twice their age and well... anyway getting back on the topic!!!! I was told over the phone 10 minutes and having it arrived almost 20 and no other customer in the building, figured in and out. No!!!! I had to wait! Finally received the food and wow!!!! Did it smell wonderful. I had to rush out to get home and dive in. The cost is very reasonable just over $11. But, what I got for 11 is a good portion of steak and chicken with tortillas wraps, Spanish rice and beans. Big bag of chips and plenty of salsa sauce. Let me tell you! My friend was dead on accurate about the flavor. Most fajitas I've tried at several Tex/mex just grill the meat... no marinade or flavor. The steak from here is savory and flavorful along with chicken. The vegetables are fresh and tasty. Guacamole and sour cream and re fried beans, etc were all top notch to me. I've been to Mariachi's numerous times in the past several years because it's so close to work, and every single time, I ask myself why I let myself get dragged here. If you want Americanized Mexican cuisine with lots of chips and salsa and plentiful portions, this is where you want to go. If you want authentic, tasty Mexican food, you'll have to keep looking. It is a good atmosphere. Almost every time I come here, everyone is raucous and in a party mood. I guess you really can't ruin beers that come in bottles. But if you go someplace for the food, like I do, you'll be disappointed. Most of the food is bland, and it is priced for the amount of food that you get. Lunch is definitely a better deal; they must make a killing at dinner with the prices and the ingredients that they use. read more

The partner and I have been craving Mexican food, all month long. This was one of our better experiences. I was very happy with my meal. Their shrimp....I do not have the words. What was even better was seeing my partner roll her eyes over the beans. Great food, with only one problem. The steak in my partners burrito had a lot of gristle. Too much of the unchewable. Went here on Saturday October 9 after a round of golf. Was looking for a late lunch with 3 hungry lugs and a cold beverage. As we entered we were directed to a table near the window facing the street which already had 2 large baskets of tortilla chips on it. I remarked off hand "Hey, how long have those been sitting there getting stale" to which the waiter remarked "No Senor...I saw you coming so I put them out for you"...only problem is that 10 minutes passed and we still didn't have any salsa, despite trying to flag down several staff. So, we get the cashier gal to bring us salsa and shag down our waiter, who took drink orders and then disappeared for another 10 minutes once he returned with an ice tea. Finally, after delivering 2 beers and a margarita the slippery little guy left us again and never came back. One of my more vocal diners in our group by this point was fuming. He shagged the cashier over and demanded that the waiter get over for our order. He shows up, all indignant that he was pulled away from his one other table (the place really was not that busy at 2 p.m.) and at this point my buddy is berating him about taking up his time and if he's too busy to wait on us we can pay for our drinks and leave, etc. They waiter is embarrassed, but deserving of the tongue-lashing. The only problem now is we're all worried about what might happen to our food behind closed doors. It turns out, we were right to worry. The food was horrible. I mean, inedible. Having just played a round of 18 in the late summer heat, we were parched and starved. None of us enjoyed our meal. The steak chimichanga was a brick-sized load of chewy, flavorless flesh and beans. I love a good steak chimi. This was bland and yuck. The refried beans and rice on the side were afterthoughts that remained on the plate after a small taste of each. The tamales were equally gross and the soft tacos were soggy because of the shredded chicken and beef seemed to come out of the can. Overall, I am in the doghouse with my friends because I mistakenly took them to Mariachi's thinking it was Margarita's, which is a few blocks away. My bad. I can not ever imagine another circumstance where I would willingly or unwillingly visit Mariachi's again. If the people of Belleville like it, good for them. For me, never again! read more

When I want a consistently solid Mexican meal, one of my go-to places is Mariachi's in Belleville. Sometimes after a long day of work you need to unwind and grab yourself a margarita, some chips and salsa and a combo plate that consists of a mini chicken chimi and beef enchilada. Been here a number of times and the food has always been good. Tables are quite close, it's a touch crowded in there. Chips and salsa are good, salsa isn't consistent though, I think its spice level is dependent on who makes it that day. All the food is good, it smells wonderful and tastes very good, my new favorite dish is the vegetable fajitas. Yum!! Portions are large and reasonably priced. I usually have enough to take about half of my meal home. Drinks are good but the bar is limited, they are usually out of something and too many times I've had to send my margarita back for the salting the glass when I've requested no salt. This is your typical texmex place. Good but not authentic Mexican. I have been here twice since its a convenient and while they do have some interesting menu items it is mainly your typical burritos, tacos, ect. The staff is very friendly though and I have never had any issues here. read more

I would give this place zero stars if I could. Not only did my boyfriend and I have terrible service, he got really bad food poisoning from his beef burrito and mini chimi. The waiter brought me the wrong order twice then never even came back to the table until we were all finished so I ended up only eating chips and rice, but still charging us for the entree! We will definitely never be going back and I will now tell everyone I know in belleville to never eat there! This was the worst food I've had I a while. When you go to a Mexican eatery and they've sprinkled Parmesan cheese over everything, you know something's wrong. The staff was very rude, and it took far too long for us to get our food. I would suggest to everyone to avoid this place. It didn't taste like authentic Mexican, you'd do better to go to Taco Bell. I used to love Mariachi's....years ago. My family and I went there not too long ago on my Grandpa's suggestion, and sadly I'm pretty sure this is the last time. Nothing had flavor. Nothing. I had Enchiladas Suizas with cheese filling. The cheese wasn't even flavorful! The refried beans were just mush. The rice had no seasoning other than salt. Mom's chimi wasn't even salty. She may have been okay if it had been! My brother was even disappointed in his fresh fajitas. We all took leftovers because we left so much on the plate that we felt bad leaving it to go to waste, even if it was less than tasty. Let's just say our pups got a Mexican feast, good or not. The two stars are for the service. Our waiter was pleasant and prompt even though he had his hands full. The expo staff--maybe a manager?--was very friendly and warned about hot plates and couldn't have been more courteous. read more

The obvious place to start is with the food. I always order tacos because I like mine just like simple and street-food style, with steak, onions and cilantro, with some lime wedges to squirt on. My choice was to either get 4 Carne "Azada" for like, 11.99, however you get no rice or beans. I enjoy the beans and always want to try the rice at least once, so I opted for the pick-2 and ordered two tacos with steak. Getting the food with chicken or steak costs a dollar more for each, but I really enjoy my tacos, so I got them. The PROBLEM with getting steak or chicken is that it prices out this restaurant from all the other Mexican places in the area. This charge reeks of 1999 and should be done away with, or they should adjust their prices accordingly. I can get 3 steak tacos with rice and beans for the same price as their regular tacos at Mariachis at pretty much any other Mexican place in Belleville, O'Fallon, Fairview, etc. There is also an upcharge for the onions and cilantro, which MAKES NO SENSE because I didn't get any of the other pico and whatever else, so I was basically paying for a substitution. TASTE: Fortunately, the tacos were delicious. The steak had a great flavor and the soft shells were warmed perfectly for flavor and texture. The onions and cilantro were just the right amount, and when I asked for lime wedges, they brought out FRESH wedges, which is a plus because many times I ask for lime and get dried out tiny wedges that barely squeeze anything out. The rice was actually enjoyable, not dried out or anything like you usually get at pretty much every Mexican place. The beans were good, with an interesting yet enjoyable mix of cheese on top. The Chips and salsa were delicious, however I ordered some today to go and the salsa was very different, way too salty. (Sidenote - You get the same amount of chips when you order chips and salsa to go no matter whether you get the tiniest little small container or the largest big tub. I paid about $6.50 for the medium, which is your average styrfoam drinking cup of salsa and a bag of chips. If I would have known it was 6:50 I would have just ordered tacos or gone somewhere else, like La Parilla where they give you chips and salsa to go with your meal.) SERVICE: The service was adequate. The place only had a few people in it at around 8:30 PM when I got there on a Tuesday night. The staff was all sitting down or milling around at the register/entrance, and I was greeted promptly and seated at the bar. The bartender was good with keeping my drinks full and getting my chips and salsa and food out in a timely manner. He must have been new because he didn't know how to make their margaritas or something, so another guy came over to show him. The PROBLEM in this was that I overheard this person telling him that another person makes the MARGARITAS by adding lime and some other ingredients, but he doesn't make it that way, he just uses the mix and rum. If your margarita is better sometimes than others, there's your reason why. So, as a previous reviewer stated, INCONSISTENCY seems to be the problem with this establishment. While the food is good, I wonder if the tacos would be the same the next time I go in. Because of their PRICING, which is NOT COMPETITIVE with other local Mexican restaurants, I am not sure if I will come in again. I can go to Dos Gorditos, La Parilla, Zapatas, and the like, and get the same amount or a bit more food for the same or less than the price of Mariachis. I honestly don't see how long they can be competitive with these other places and stay open due to these factors. I give it two stars because I want to go back and try the tacos again and see if they are consistent, and will give it 3 stars if they are. But as of now, PASS unless you want to pay the same or more for what you can get at the other Mexican restaurants in the area. read more

I went with my husband, daughter and grandson for lunch. The parking lot is a mess and needs repaved. The patio area was nice. The interior shows the age of the building and could use an update. The server was a young girl...not very friendly. The lunch menu was very limited. The dinner menu is also available, but pricey. The salsa was good. My chicken quesadilla was nothing special nor were my husband's fajitas. My daughter ordered nachos. She didn't say anything about them, so when I tried them at the end of the meal I was surprised by the taste of the hamburger meat. It was very strange...tasted cinnamon-y. They were already shutting down and the room was filled wait staff cleaning. There was only four other tables that had customers, and by the looks of it, they where finishing up. The chips came out fast, and yes the salsa was good. But that's where the positive comments end. We sat until 9:55 and was never waited on. Not even acknowledgment by the staff.
