We have eaten here numerous times, but it had been quite a while since our last visit because we had a really off-putting experience. We decided to give them another try tonight, and I'm happy to say we had a much better experience. I had Street Tacos ( my go to); the pork and chicken were really good, but the beef not so much. My husband had the Quesadilla Suprema which he said was good. The service was good, as always. It's a really busy place, so it can get a bit loud, but it's one of the better Mexican restaurants in the area. read more

Quick lunch on a Thursday after the lunch crowd. Restaurant is empty except for me but it's clean, nicely decorated and very prompt service. Standard starter of chips and salsa; both seem made in-house. The chips are a little on the thicker side, the salsa fresh and blended nearly smooth. Great flavor and a medium heat. Enjoying the chimichanga with ground beef, served with salad, refried beans and Mexican rice. The beans are flavorful and still have large beans mixed with the whipped beans for a great texture. The rice tastes good and is pretty standard fair. The chimichanga seems to be of good quality beef, seasoned, and stuffed full into the tortilla; maybe a half pound of meat, a full portion to be sure. Fried golden and topped with queso cheese with finely diced jalapeños. Delicious. Don't let the small town location fool you, this place knows how to bring on the Mexican food! Nice work! read more

A nice little secret in southern Illinois is Mexico on Main in Trenton, IL. Good Mexican food and margaritas. The enchiladas are delicious! The sauce is rich and tasty! I enjoyed the enchiladas and could have eaten a few more. The quesadillas were also a hit at our table! They were fresh and tasty. My wife recommends the chimichangas. She said they are right up there with some of her favorites from other Mexican restaurants. Now onto the drinks. The Modelo was served cold in a bottle and went down easy. The rest of the table enjoyed a pitcher of margaritas and then they enjoyed another! The service was prompt and attentive. I would have given this restaurant more than four stars and really I would give it 3 and 1/2 . The employees pack you in and it is tight to sit at the table. The employees also started cleaning the restaurant while patrons were still enjoying their meals and drinks and the cleaning fumes were nauseating. Will I return? Most likely I will return. I was also happy to see that they had a children friendly menu for picky eaters. I would recommend a visit to Mexico on Main if you enjoy Mexican food as we do. This is pretty much a run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurant. Realisticslly, if you've been to one, you've been to them all. All of them offer practically the same menu items and options. Really, you're going for the experience that the staff give you. That's what it comes down to. The staff at Mexico On Main know how to provide a good experience. It's been awhile since I've visited in store (pre COVID), but I've always had a nice experience there, including the times I did the pickup option from curbside. Can't say nothing bad about this place. It was a good typical Americanized Mexican restaurant, but not authentic. The food came out fast and the waiters were nice. All while having great prices on their food and drinks. I think it's a nice little spot to enjoy some cheap Mexican food. read more

Mexico on Main, or Margaritas, is just east of downtown New Baden, Illinois. I've eaten there several times, one time I had the fajitas and the other time I just ordered some hardshell tacos with ground beef. I think they need to rethink their menu and look to be more competitive in the space. I often pass by driving and do not see a lot of cars in the parking lot, which signals that there's some thinking that needs to be done to improve their business model. Somethings that I recommend are looking at your competitors and looking at what they're doing and trying to maybe strive to outdo them a little bit. Offer a menu that has some basic items and not so many items to choose from. Offer hot chips and salsa, that's a key to good Mexican food. There's other details as well. For my fellow yelpers, it would be good for you to chime in and provide this business with a few more insight on how they might improve their operations. read more

I ordered the "Volcan Marino" which by the menu includes "shrimp, scallops, crab meat, tilapia, poblano pepper,onions, zucchini, yellow cheese, white cheese and Mexican sauce." I received a meal that included a bunch of onions, zucchini and some kind of liquid sauce. Topped with maybe 1 filet of tilapia and 5 shrimp. No scallops, no crab meat, no poblano and like I said, the sauce was terrible. For the $22 and change I paid for it I got ripped off. Do not go here. read more

We got taken here by some family and were skeptical of there being good Mexican in rural Illinois. However, we were quite surprised. My bf feels that this place rivals and maybe outperforms the Mexican in Boston. I had a tasty burrito and strawberry daiquiri, and for a pretty good price. The chips and salsa were also flowing. We've made at least 10 return trips here since the last review with friends and just the two of us. Thursday and Friday nights they have $10 pitchers of margaritas (original lime) and they also have other flavors too, but not at that price. Shrimp fajitas were very good, the carnitas (which are pork tips can be made into fajitas too) are great as a stand alone dish. Their selection of fajita variations is extensive and a steal if you get them for two. Their chicken chimichanga is stuffed full of chicken and they have a pick two platter where you can build your own combo. They raised their prices, but it's still cheaper than any other Mexican place and better too. read more

I wish I could give this place 10 STARS!! This is by far the best Mexican place around the area and I just can't believe how inexpensive this place is to eat for the quality of food that you get. From where I live I pass at least 5 other Mexican places to eat there and I never even think to not make the drive. The food is AWESOME and the margaritas taste great. 2 people can eat here for $25 bucks drinks included and not leave hungry by any means. The staff there are always very very nice and they want to make sure that you enjoy your meal and that's a big part of the reason that we keep coming back. If your ever in the highland Illinois / Trenton area, go check out Mexico on Main!! The interior can be improved on forsure with maybe big decorative picture frames & get rid of all the specials written on paper everywhere But they do have crazy big booths which I love!!! & the staff was super sweet, especially a young man that waited on us. Immediately after sitting in a booth we placed drink orders & piping hot chips & cold salsa were brought. Warmest chips I think I've ever had, great job! Just add a shake of salt to the basket if you like. Salsa was good, could have used more cilantro but I'm just happy to have unlimited chips & salsa. That's rare these days. My soda never got empty. always refilled quickly! That's was my fav part. I always get chimichangas &!the chicken inside was soo flavorful, rice & beans great, the delicious melted cheese on top add fantastic flavor. I will order more of that cheese next time& dip the chips. Husband had the shrimp/chorizo/chicken/beef fajitas . They were awesome as well, maybe coulda used a touch more spice but still great. I will be back in sept. That's the vintage flea market @ highland fairgrounds. My husband and I have been eating at mexico on main just about every week for a few years. The staff is friendly, the salsa, pico and guac are homemade, and the prices aren't bad. Recommended dishes are pollo a la parilla, carnitas dinner, or fajita burrito. A guy comes on wednesday nights and plays some really nice spanish guitar music. We love this place! They used to have more outdoor seating, which we enjoyed, but now there is hardlly ever a wait for indoor seating since they expanded the dining room. The only downside is that the small outdoor seating is usually occupied by smokers using it as their personal smoking area....how rude! Go out front! read more
