We would give this place 5 stars, but....we encountered a bad experience...This place serves some of the best tacos in town. They don't skimp on the fillings, and each taco is loaded with flavor. You can choose your protein and customize it with a wide variety of toppings, which makes every visit a little different. We dined in earlier this week and, as always, the food itself was excellent. Unfortunately, the experience took a turn while we were eating. A staff member began wiping down nearby tables using a very strong cleaning solution. The smell was so overpowering that it became difficult to enjoy the meal. Since your sense of smell plays a big role in tasting food, the odor made it nearly impossible to continue eating comfortably. We ended up asking for a to-go container because we just couldn't take it anymore. We absolutely appreciate the importance of keeping tables clean and sanitized, but the cleaning product being used was simply too strong for a dining environment. With a milder solution, this place would easily deliver a near-perfect experience. read more

Unassuming looking place in a strip mall, but the food was fantastic! We were there on a Saturday afternoon and there was a continuous stream of people coming in. I had the fish tacos and they put the fish in the fryer when I ordered them so super fresh! My husband got a burrito which they loaded up! And when they accidentally tore the tortilla, they promptly wrapped it in a new one! And the kids got churros which they made fresh and brought to the table. Decided to try Taqueria Olvera today based on their rave reviews and I was in the area. I ordered three barbacoa corn tacos (they come with three). They have a topping bar where you tell them what you want as toppings, guacamole, onion, cilantro, pico de gallo, limes etc. The tacos were authentic. Estoy Tejano. The barbacoa was spot on and they give you a good potion of meat and toppings. You know the place is good when it's 50/50 people ordering in Spanish and English. The service was great and quick. They have plenty of tables inside and after I got there a line formed, but they got through it quickly. Food Network was playing on the tv, which is always an added plus for me. Hate to be the one who disagrees with the rave reviews but this is not a $ place for meals. We thought we would have a light meal of three corn tacos each for Taco Tuesday but ended up paying thirty dollars for them! Caution to not get the guac because they charge you $6 extra just for a dollop. No mention of that when ordering that from the counter. Once again you order from the counter and carry your tray to your chosen table, but they have the option of asking for a tip to your face then though you kindly decline one Mexican says to the other in English "Did you get a tip?" Most offensive for us to hear especially when the bill was too high loaded with hidden costs. If they want to nickel and dime us then be upfront about it and tell us that thcosts extra but at $5 a small taco I will not return. This was a perfect stop for a quick but junky lunch before hitting the road to go home. This area has many places to eat, but they were mostly nation-wide chains i have been to, so I wanted something I never had tried. Taqueria Olvera had variety of meat options and I tried pastor, asada and barbacoa tacos which were all great. There was a line but it went quickly as their staff were efficient and quick. They put a generous amount of meat and toppings on my tacos and I felt so stuffed after finishing all three. Just missing one star because of the cleanliness. Tables could have been kept a little cleaner I think, and there were several big flies in the dining room which came close to my food many times. read more

Enjoyed this humble taqueria. We were just passing through so I have no idea about other options in this particular area, but the tacos and nachos were solid. The regional style isn't my personal favorite compared to other parts of Mexico, but that's just individual taste, nothing to do with execution. The staff was kind and quite patient. But what I need to tell you about, and in fact the sole reason I'm writing this review, is the strawberry-lime agua fresca. Normally I look on with suspicion at the fountain drinks in most restaurants. "That's for rookies," I say to my self with haughty satisfaction. They're usually so artificial, not a great use of money and calories. But for whatever reason something spoke to me today and I ordered one of the three options at the counter. And you guys. You guys. It's so good. The fresh strawberries are delicious, the seeds add fun texture and let you know this is not powdered disappointment but in fact real and vibrant and balanced and deeply satisfying. Refreshing in every sense of the word. I went back and ordered another one. You should, too. I am grateful for this humbling experience and can only hope that other surprises in my future are as enjoyable. read more

What a treat this place is! We're always in the area, and never even noticed Taqueria Olvera. But now we'll never forget it. Clean. Spacious. Friendly workers. And the food was fantastic. I got three tacos -- two carne asada and one al pastor. Everything was really tasty and tender. I got the habanero salsa, too. When they say it's hot, they mean it. I love that Fairview Heights has an independent locally own tacqueria that keeps you from going to the chains. I am not a fan of Qdoba, Chipotle and definitely not Taco Bell. This place is definitely fast casual and has a similar choose your own set up as the big guys. But I like to support small business especially when the food is good and I keep going back. I think you get the most bang for your buck with the nachos, however I have had the burritos tacos and tamales here as well and they are all good. The place is always clean and neat, and I don't know why they added those slot machines but hey if it keeps them in business I'm ok with it. I LOVE the fact they have horchata and the strawberry lime Fresca is refreshingly good too so it is always hard for me to choose. Please support this place. The food was excellent. But the location and the staff leave a bit to be desired. I had a steak burrito. It was huge!! I love how you can add your toppings. Everything was fresh and delicious. We also had chips and queso. It was excellent as well. The location, on the other hand, is not the best. For some reason, the owner chose to partition part of the restaurant off and put in "video gaming" machines. Since there's an entire business dedicated to video gaming right next door, this is a puzzling choice. Plus, I feel like these machines make restaurants less classy. We were there during the dinner rush. The trash started to overflow, but the staff seemed oblivious to the issue. We also watched as the staff had an argument on how full to fill the queso cups. I stopped here in my way to the mid-america airport, because of it's close proximity to the highway and the good reviews. What i found was more than expected. In the most unlikely location, this restaurant is authentic and delicious. The special of the day was pork tamales. I didn't order them, but I think that proves that the food here is thoughtful and fresh. The man helping us behind the counter took the lids off of every single item and patiently showed us their offerings. We ended up with nachos. I know, i know, this does not really sample the ingredients, or vouch even for my taste as an eater, but i let my kids choose and i shared with them. The refried beans are authentic and delicious. They offered a fresh mango salsa and tossed on lots of cilantro, up on our request. Their guacamole was amazing. The queso was divine. So yeah, I'd recommend it, and go back!
