It is located in Fairmont City, not too deep into Illinois, situated by farmland and near the raceway. The place is like a mullet: business in the front (store) and a party in the back (restaurant). The aisles of the store have everything one would need, from food staples to household items. We were warmly greeted by our waitress, who proved to be super attentive during our visit--even after we paid. We ordered a top-shelf pitcher of strawberry margaritas. It was a huge pitcher for $32, came with a side pitcher of ice, and we were able to make a total of 12 glasses out of it. They started us off with chips and salsa. The chips were made of super-duper corn and came with two spicy table salsas. For our appetizer, we had guacamole. It was freshly made but lacked salt and lime for what we are used to, so I took my lime from my margarita and squeezed it over the guacamole to make it better. I ordered à la carte: one quesabirria, a grilled chicken taquito, and a chicken gordita. The taquito and quesabirria were on point. An old downtown building has been given a second life with care rather than gimmickry. The dining room is bright and uncluttered, softened by warm wood, patterned tile, and a leafy light fixture that hangs over the center of the room like a small indoor garden. Outside, a broad covered patio practically begs for a long evening. Even the painted windows and vintage-style sign feel considered. It is the sort of place that whispers confidence before a single plate reaches the table. The chips and salsa reinforce that optimism. The chips glisten with just enough oil to make you suspicious, but then they shatter with an airy crispness that's surprisingly addictive. They disappear faster than you'd expect. I ordered wine. Yes, I know--a Mexican restaurant celebrated for margaritas. But wine is on the menu, and sometimes that's what sounds right. The list simply instructs you to "ask your server," who, understandably, had to investigate before returning with the exhaustive selection: Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, or Cabernet. The Cabernet was serviceable enough until the second glass revealed its identity: individual bottles of Barefoot. If that's your thing, fine. If not, this is probably the moment to pivot toward the margaritas. Then came the carne asada. Or rather, something wearing its name. When most people hear "carne asada," they imagine juicy grilled beef with char around the edges, seasoned assertively enough that every bite reminds you why this dish has endured for generations. What arrived instead was a steak pounded into near transparency, cooked well past surrender, and seasoned with remarkable restraint. It was less a celebration of beef than an argument against it. The portion was equally bewildering. I finished it in minutes, not because it was irresistible, but because I was hungry enough to overlook its shortcomings. I could easily have eaten five times as much. Eight minutes later, another plate appeared--a scattering of avocado, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomato, and peppers, as though the meal had suddenly remembered it had forgotten something. Was it a salad? A garnish? A topping? A side? The tortillas that were supposed to tie everything together never made an appearance, leaving the plate to exist as an edible riddle. To be fair, my companions enjoyed their meals. Quesadillas, burritos, and dishes lavishly blanketed in melted cheese tend to forgive a multitude of sins. One person in our group rated their meal three and a half stars, which feels about right. For me, though, the experience settles at three. The prices are fair, the space is genuinely inviting, and there is enough promise here that I'd consider returning--but next time I'd order something safer, skip the wine, and hope the kitchen shows the same care with the food that it so clearly invested in the building.
