Five stars automatically for the Strawberry Rhubarb Pastry with Pistachio ice cream. It was sweet and flaky, the ice cream paired perfectly. We also tried the Creme Brûlée which was a close 2nd. For dinner we had the Pork Chop with Au gratin Potatoes, it was nice but wasn't the show stopper meal I had hoped for. The service was amazing and attentive. It was a semi formal dining experience. I really enjoyed my breakfast here! The location is so beautiful, and we sat outside when the weather was perfecto. I had the granola with milk, and it was soo good! It wasn't crazy flavorful but it's supposed to be healthy so that's expected. Also, their warm bread with the jam. OH MY GOSH!! That is a must order for breakfast! It was like a baguette, soft fluffy bread, and tasty jam. I ate a couple bites of my mom's salmon, and ooh!! That was the best salmon I've ever had- it was salty and moist, and perfect. The only thing I didn't like was the hot chocolate. I was so disappointed- it came in a large cup and I was ready to down the whole thing, but it was soooo flavorless. I don't know if it was trying to be healthy but hot chocolate is supposed to Taste like chocolate. That tasted like warm milk, literally. I had to add like 5 cubes of sugar and that didn't do anything to help either. I'm not sure if that's the French way of making hot chocolate, but it was just awful. Oof.. but everything else was great. Service was on the slow side, but we weren't in a rush, so that's okay. Overall, great place to stop by for breakfast - I don't know about lunch or dinner - but DO NOT order the hot chocolate. 3.75 stars really. The food very good and enjoyed by all. I had very tasty trout and family had steak frites, halibut and crab linguine which we all enjoyed. Their smoked old fashioned was a nice cocktail. So why 3.75? I thought a bit expensive for what the food was, the server while nice enough but gave me the very distinct impression I was being sold to, and then there was the 45 minute wait from the time we finished our soup/salad to the time we got our entree. I understand the kitchen can get behind but the restaurant did not appear very busy with lots of empty tables. Not even a hint of an offer of taking something off the bill. 2.45 hours for dinner for pretty slow service with the marathon wait at the end. The cheapest tasting French food I've ever had. We sent it back. I was nauseous the rest of the night. I couldn't even enjoy my party. While I found the fine dining scene in Portland and Seattle provincial and overpriced for the most part (I've been spoiled by the Michelin star fine dining scene at a very reasonable price in the SFBA), Marche is an exception. And elegant, yet subtly casual restaurant that holds high standards in the community. I have eaten here twice, both were the only times I've ever been in Eugene. This place is a staple according to the in-laws I've been here with, and has always been a pleasant experience, every time. They have a restaurant which you can make reservations at, or a café for walk-ins or the overflow from the restaurant. This last time I ordered a few things on the menu: - Black cod fritters served with lemon aioli - Crabcakes - rabbit, sausage, and pork belly cassoulet Honestly, it was too much food. The appetizers were perfect, and I can't complain about the flavor. The cassoulet was perfect for that cold night, however, I had no meat whatsoever on the pork belly. It was just straight fat. Everything else about the cassoulet was delicious; wrap it was moist yet crispy, The sausage was spicy and perfectly cooked, and the beans were soft and blended well with the other flavors. I also ordered a bottle of Old World style red wine for the table. Unfortunately, upon tasting the first bottle it was skunky. However, the second bottle that we skeptically opened was good. Solid soufflé with roasted veggies though I was not a fan on roasted elongated radishes (they lost the crunch while not adding to flavor). My husband and I happened into this place before a concert at the Shedd. No reservations, we just walked a few blocks hoping to find some good eats and this place definitely does! We sat outside, on a beautiful March evening, and as soon as the sun dipped below the trees it got a little chilly but the waitstaff was on it before we even asked and fired up their propane heaters...it was toasty! I had a perfect glass of Rosé, hubby had a local brew...and then our food came! I had THE BEST STEAK I've ever had! I mean, no joke...tender, juicy and flavorful...so good!My husband had the pork chops and they were also really really good! The staff was lovely, we had such a good experience for first-timers! I stayed at the Inn at 5th which is across the street and got take-out from Marche. My meal was around $50 and I was so looking forward to a delicious meal. It was awful. I ordered the cod with a side of Brussels sprouts and the squash fritters. Every dish was sitting in a pool of grease. The order was delivered within a few minutes of me placing it and so I questioned how fresh it was going to be. It was lukewarm and stale. The grease was too much. I love Brussels sprouts but the grease dripped off of every bite. So disappointed. I will make sure the hotel knows as they used them for dinner orders. read more

I have been to Marche now I think 3-4 times. I have been in large parties and also a nice night out with the wife. The cuisine is French inspired but infused local ingredients and proteins. This experience was for my 23rd anniversary with the wife, so we really wanted to have a great time. We arrived a bit early for our 7:30 reservation, about 25 or so minutes early. We were immediately asked to follow along and be seated. This was off putting just a bit, only because there was not a single thought by the hostess if we wanted to partake in a drink at their fantastic bar. Nope, right to the table. Now when we arrived their literally was almost every table available but we were seated at the smallest most in the walkway table possible. Ok, well maybe things will pick up. We wait, and wait, and wait, and oh yeah wait some more. Then the the next couple of tables behind us get seated, and their service is, well...prompt! We still haven't even been greeted by a server or anyone. The other two tables have water and a drink order in immediately. Ok, maybe me, finally get service with some water. We order our drinks, and food and everything else because well...we had 15 minutes to look everything over. Our food comes out, we started with oysters on the half shell. Two varieties and great flavor, but the table across from us got the same thing and a wonderful explanation of everything on the plate, how they were grown, the dipping sauce etc. Well at least we then knew what our own food was. The main courses show up, they are correct but we ordered some sauces to go with them and they hadn't come with the meal. Finally almost 1/2 done with our meal, a bar tender comes around the corner, asks if we want more drinks, uh Yeah!! Then I asked if we could get our sauces we were supposed to get. She literally walked over to the counter picked them up and brought them over. When you spend $150+ for a meal, you expect better than this. I was disappointed with the overall experience and expect better from Marche. Had the food not been as good as it was, this would have gotten a 1 star. Guys, your food can be phenomenal but if the experience sucks, I can blow my $150 somewhere else!! read more

My visit to Eugene filled me with nostalgia for my college town (Davis, CA). It was a blast to think back fondly on those days with my college sweetheart, now husband. We mostly subsisted on dorm food and the typical cheap college fare cooked in our apartments. It was always a cause for celebration when our parents would visit and take us out to a REAL restaurant. So, while there is nothing like those crazy college days, there are advantages to getting older. Now we can travel in style and eat real meals whenever we want too (well, at least whenever a kidsitter is available). I didn't see a single college kid at Marche. In fact, it is probably too nice even when the parents are in town. Northwest freshness with French style and prices. The service was quite good, with a little smugness mixed in. I typically narrow my entrée choices down to two or three and get a little guidance from the server about what is exceptional at a particular place. My innocuous question, "What are the most popular items on the menu?" was answered by, "Well (sigh)... just because it is popular, doesn't mean it is the best." True, but there was probably a more diplomatic way to answer that question. Now, I did follow the server's recommendations (somewhat) and enjoyed the meal thoroughly. The mesclun greens and romaine leaf salads were light and zesty. The bouillabaisse and pork entrees were wonderful, but the side order of roasted vegetables was the standout for me. The Sparkling Cosmopolitan was a lovely cocktail and we rounded out the meal with the Apple-Huckleberry Galette (after the server noted, "You can get crème brulee anywhere") for dessert. Actually the dessert was a bit of a disappointment compared to the rest of the meal. So maybe sometimes popular IS the right choice. They offer Stumptown French press coffee, but not in decaf. And we're not kids anymore cramming for a midterm. No real coffee for me after 5:00p. :-) read more

We walked into Marche Provisions with high expectations, given we've eaten at Marche and know of the top quality there. Plus we love little deli / market / wine shop combo stores and had a sort of Oakville Grocer vibe in mind, having not seen photos of Provisions. We walked in really wanting to like this place and anticipating at least a 4 star introductory experience. We stopped by after the lunch rush, a sort of "tea time time" with the idea of coffee and "something"' and maybe picking up some specialty items too. While it had some things to commend it, we walked out with a 3 star rating firmly in mind for Provisions. We'd go back if we were in the area and this was the only convenient stop. But we'd not rush back nor seek this out as a destination. Still good enough to be AOK. Here's why: On the plus side, service was very friendly, asked us if we were looking for something specific as we wandered about for a bit ("No but thanks for asking, we're just making our first visit and taking a look at things."). Once we decided on our order from the bakery case to go with coffee, they were equally helpful. On the down side, the Meyer Lemon Panna Cotta we ordered to try was just "meh'. Maybe it's because we've had so much Panna Cotta to have too many other remarkably good benchmarks to which to compare it (Nostrana's is one of them, as example). But this one lacked both the unctuous "just set" texture (too much gelatin) and also didn't have enough Meyer Lemon zing. If we'd purchased this at a grocery market dessert case, I'd understand, but here, not so much. What really set us back was the prices of most of the items in the store - as in far too high. We realize this is a specialty market and one expects to pay more as a result. But even with that expectation in mind, we felt as if the consumer was being "had". To ground this with a specific example, as that's only fair for that kind of criticism, the Tumalo Farms Truffleur Cheese was a little over $40 per pound. At my local specialty market, known for being one of the high priced vendors in town, that Oregon white truffle cheese is offered at about $29 per pound. That's just one of several examples for which we had price comparisons readily available in our heads. Overall the ambiance seemed sort of "tired" and given the location of this in the 5th Street Market and, again, the tie to Marche, we were expecting something more vibrant. So maybe the issue here is really more about expectations being out of synch with reality than any failing on the part of Provisions. Except for the high prices. Ouch. read more

I came here due to the amazing reviews on Yelp. And Yelp is... well, hits and misses. It's the same as Marche. I had the steak and eggs, over easy, and replaced the baguette with house potatoes. It came with a tiny side salad. Overall, I liked everything except the steak; which was the star of the dish. The steak was chewy. It wasn't overcooked. It was medium rare to medium, but the quality lacked in the type of cut. Their service was great; however, the wait for steak and eggs was a bit long. And the restaurant was 1/4 full. I'll come back again during dinner and see how they do. read more

My son and I had an early Christmas brunch here Saturday and everything was great from the immediate seating and service to the variety of food available. We tried the kouign amann which was amazingly flaky, rich and the perfect amount of sweetness. He had the Boudin blanc & said the sausage was the best he ever had. I had the crab cake benedict and the eggs, hollandaise sauce were perfection. The crab cakes were too fishy so handed them off to my son. I didn't realize my order was served with a salad and since I am very allergic to arugula (usually in spring mix) they quickly brought out a butter lettuce salad which was lightly dressed with a lovely vinaigrette. It was a wonderful afternoon and we will definitely be making this one of our go to places. read more

The end of an era- This place has changed. I have been coming here for 10 years and it was consistently great- never left feeling the slightest bit unhappy. I visited a few weekend ago for lunch on a Saturday with two girlfriends. We have come here together many times. Our cocktails were fine, nothing special but that's ok. The food however was not great or even good. I order the burger (usually a classic, consistent great choice), and one friend smoked salmon hash and the other steak and eggs. I requested medium well- after recent experiences of ordering medium and getting very rare meat- and my burger was still rare. The bun was hard/stale on top and soaked with meat juice and soggy on the bottom. There was barely any cheese and the fries were underdone as well. I had planned to take half home but there was no way this was going to be edible later. The salmon hash was "fine" said my friend, but the baguette "toast" was hard and inedible. Our friend with the steak and eggs said the tiny steak puck tasted reheated and old, and once again the baguette was inedible. We all felt it just wasn't worth it. Our server only returned at the end of our meal to give us the check, never asking how the food was. We paid and left without saying anything. Probably won't return. So sad. read more

Four of us has dinner last night. Two of us chose the special which was a 60 day aged pork loin served with cauliflower mash and sautéed greens . Outstanding! My dining partners enjoyed the pasta dish and portobello mushroom sandwich. Service was attentive and waiter knowledgeable about the cocktails and food. Always a good selection of wine. We went here last night, had a reservation and had to wait an hour to receive food that was just ok. The drinks were ok but not consistent and the food was bland. The server was super friendly but I can't believe we had to wait so long. Also, as we were leaving the two hostess at the front were openly talking badly about a homeless man who was asking for change 30 feet in front of the restaurant, he wasn't aggressive or anything. 5 stars for Eugene standards, 4 if this were a larger city with more competition. The chickpea crepes filled with ratatouille and goat cheese were totally delicious. Smoky, salty, high-quality fresh veggies. Only complaint: a number of the eggplant chunks were still quite firm, not quite cooked through. (I'm picky about eggplants, it's my favorite veg.) Cocktails were also refreshing and quite citrusy, not too sweet. I also tried the roasted carrots side (with bee pollen... cool?) and the olives. That amounts to all the vegetarian items, from what I can tell, and they were all delicious. I might go back soon just for happy hour drinks with a side of ratatouille. Sometimes you'll hear them talk about flavor combinations and ingredients. This is what food is about. Great for dinner and breakfast/ brunch. I came to the soft opening of Marche brunch 25 years ago. I was young and poor and could not believe my good fortune. 25 years later it is still the best spot in town. Hit the bar for happy hour or later and they will treat you right. The dining room is elegant and beautiful. Our food came out fairly quickly. The flatbread sandwich that my daughter got was overly spicy. The eggs Benedict I received was very bland. However the beignets we ordered were divine! We then were left sitting, waiting, looking around, waiting, waiting some more for our waiter to come back and box up the rest of my daughters meal and provide our check. My summary is slow service with sub or food for the price. However if you'd rather try it yourself, make sure you walk around the market and stores behind the restaurant. read more

A friend recommended we eat here, and based on the good reviews we were excited to try it! Unfortunately it did not live up to the hype and the food was bland bland bland. The drinks sounded good, but weren't good. The bone marrow appetizer had zero flavor and tasted like pure fat being smeared on toast. We both ordered the crab fettuccine and had to send it back. Again, no flavor, doughy noodles, and barely any crab -- definitely not worth $35. We asked for fresh parmesan and they didn't have parmesan, which seems odd when serving pasta. The only thing we really enjoyed was the smoked trout appetizer, which tasted great and was a great size portion. Also glad they're enforcing COVID-19 safety protocols. Although food is only one of three dimensions to be evaluated, it is the most important IMO. Our choices for Father's Day brunch were smoked trout hash, eggs Benedict, bay shrimp salad and beignets. The beignets were best: hot, pillowy and just sweet enough. They measure up to those at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. The shrimp salad was pretty good: balanced and flavorful, except for the shrimp themselves, which were bland, as bay shrimp tend to be. Eggs Benedict (with ham) was fine, but nothing special. Anyone capable of poaching an egg could fashion a competitive version at home. The same is true of the smoked trout hash, which was not hot enough and revisited the kitchen for a booster shot. Get a package of smoked trout at Trader Joe's and mix it up with sautéed cubed potatoes and a smattering of herbs and you'll be just as happy for a third the cost. In short, this high-priced brunch was, like so many Eugene restaurant meals, "decent." Except for the beignets we would not order any of the dishes again. The service could be described as "friendly," if not exceptional. A side of (nondescript) home fries didn't appear till late in the game after our server was reminded of the oversight. I never got an answer to my question about which coffee roaster Marche used. BTW, the coffee was really good. Skip the fresh squeezed OJ unless you have reason to believe that the oranges are sweeter than they were this morning. Ambiance-wise, Marche is great. Despite a full house, it was easy to converse and seating is quite comfortable. I can't see myself as the driving force behind a return visit, but I wouldn't be averse to another appearance if a friend wanted to go there. read more

Cute little bistro style restaurant with some eclectic dishes. I started with the lamb and bean soup which came with a small amount of rich lamb stew in hearty bean stock enriched with lamb jus. A very excellent soup. I also went with the smoked fish platter that came with smoked salmon, whitefish, salmon roe, goat cheese, smoked trout, capers and pickled shallots. This was served with some toasted bread that had a generous amount of good oil and some crackers. All the items on that plate were very fresh and quite delicious. I went with a double espresso after the meal and it was prepared perfectly with a good amount of foam and a great roasted coffee flavor. Service was very good and the prices were reasonable. read more
