We had a great experience at Marcelo's Lasagnerria! We tried the beef lasagna and mushroom lasagna, and both were delicious. Unfortunately, the chef hadn't arrived yet when we visited, so we weren't able to try the pizza. We'll have to come back for that next time! It's a nice spot to sit outdoors and enjoy a meal, especially with the generally pleasant weather around here. Parking was easy enough, which is always a plus. Another bonus is that it's just a short one-block walk to an ice cream shop afterward, making it a great little outing. read more

Solid lasagna! I got the traditional bolognese one and it was cooked really well, but I just wish it had more sauce! The sauce on top felt dried out like it was reheated. Overall the dish was served hot and it was still really tasty, good flavors throughout, nothing overpowering. The pasta itself was cooked well, not too soft, not too al dente, just right. My only gripe is I would have preferred some more sauce. It's nice they also served some bread and a side salad with the dish. Definitely a hearty meal! The chili sauce and balsamic dressing was pretty good too, nothing amazing, but solid. The guy at the counter was super friendly and the meal was served up after about 5-10 mins which isn't bad. I came on a random Thursday around lunchtime and they weren't very busy. The restaurant itself is pretty bare-bones, but clean and sufficient. I'm not normally a lasagna person but when I saw this shop was almost dedicated to it I had to try. I had been hoping to try the meat or vegetarian sampler listed in online menus but it wasn't available in the online order that day. We instead got: - A slice of the Bianca: white sauce with caramelized onions and pancetta. A fun twist and onions not too sweet - A slice of Abruzzo: a classic meat red sauce. I was utterly charmed by Marcella's Lasagneria! I swung by a few weeks ago on a weekday, and while there were a steady stream of customers, there was no wait and no crowds. The store had a charming local vibe, perched on the corner of a fairly quiet, residential area. It was intimate and cozy, with cute tiles on the windowsill, but still quite casual. Service was polite and decently quick. There are two infused oils table side that you can use to jazz up your lasagna. We ordered the bolognese and mushroom lasagnas. They came out in these small foil containers. Though they looked unassuming in the photos, they were actually HEFTY. Two pieces were plenty for the two of us to share. They were perfectly layered with a good noodle to sauce ratio, and (this is personal preference) were not stuffed to the brim with cheese. You definitely don't miss the meat in the mushroom lasagna, though I appreciated the heartiness of the meat bolognese sauce. I was stuffed after we cleared both slices. The orange oil is a pepperoni oil and makes everything taste like pizza, so I doused my portion in it. The other is more of a muffuletta-inspired oil and while I am not the biggest olive fan, I enjoyed changing things up between bites. My only feedback was that the lasagna was very room temp, and I think I would have preferred them to be warmer. The foil vessels they are served in feel very appropriate for a quick broil in the oven. However, I would love to come back to try the Abruzzo lasagna, their pasta offerings, and the butternut squash lasagna! read more

While visiting SF before the marathon and wanting to carbo load, ( I'm not running just carbohydrates loading), I thought I'd pop into this unpretentious little shop with the reputation of having the best lasagna in town. Like I said this is an unpretentious little neighborhood restaurant with super friendly people who bend over backwards to insure you leave happy. Since I came for lasagna how could I not have the trio sampler featuring 3 popular separate serving s of lasagna. Each was delicious there was a spicy 1/3rd slice, a meat filled 1/3rd slice and my favorite 1/3 slice the white slice. We also had salad which was fresh and was served with home baked bread and some soup all pictured below. Ambiance: Marcella's is a small Italian restaurant in Dogpatch with a homey feeling with both inside and outdoor seating. The street corner is not that busy allowing for those sitting outside to enjoy the weather and the ambiance of outdoors. Wait time: There is not a long wait time between arrival and being seated and food is promptly delivered upon ordering. Service: The staff that works here is extremely friendly and reminds me of the same Italian hospitality that is so well known in the culture. The staff also is helpful with ordering, keeps drinks filled, and check on their guests without being overbearing. Food: The lasagna that is served is extremely fresh with the taste of fresh pasta and good ricotta and filling is generous with every layer. There is also bread served before the lasagna and a side salad too provided before the meal. Overall, Marcella's was a delightful Italian restaurant experience with delicious homemade pasta and extremely friendly staff who enjoy their jobs. One of my favorite lasagna places in San Francisco! We went on a weekend afternoon and the place was packed. We had to wait around 15 minutes for seats. The restaurant felt really cozy and the day was super nice out and sunny so we decided to sit outside. We got the meat sampler lasagna and the mushroom ravioli. I enjoyed the meat sampler lasagna a lot. The meat sauce was flavorful and packed with delightful tomato taste. 5/5. I wish the portion sizes are bigger. The meat sampler came with three small slices of lasagna but it wasn't enough for me! Wish it was more! The mushroom ravioli was delicious as well. Loved Marcella's Lasagneria! Wish there were more restaurants like Marcella's-- it's a cute neighborhood gem! This lasagna shop differs from others because it doesn't use the thick lasagna sheets like a lot of other places do. We ordered the Abruzzo (Italian sausage) and Bolognese (ground sirloin angus beef) lasagnas and enjoyed them both. Interior is small with all outdoor style garden tables and service was friendly. Came here to get some takeout for lunch on a Friday. The servers were extremely friendly and attentive even though they were packed with dine in customers. Their lasagna really stands out among the average. I don't usually go for lasagna when I have the option of other pasta because often times the lasagna sheets are super thick and doughy. About 10 years ago, I worked at a company that would have catered lunch once a week and Marcella's was always one of my favorites. The lasagna using thin fresh pasta was nothing like I'd had before (except for in Italy) and the flavors were amazing. The abruzzo, pesto, and butternut squash were my favorites. Inspired by Marcella's, I even learned to make my own lasagna using fresh pasta but lemme tell you, it's a labor of love and who has time for that? I've made it out to the restaurants a few times since and it never fails to disappoint. I love the outdoor seating on nice days and the staff has always been nice. The bread, chili oil, and salad that come with an order of lasagna are all very good too. I want some of that chili oil to take home. I keep meaning to try their pastas, but the lasagnas are too good to pass up and the portion sizes are healthy enough that I leave feeling stuffed as is. read more

We waited an hour to dine here last weekend, and unfortunately the whole experience was fairly underwhelming. I had the abruzzo lasagna, bolognese lasagna, and tiramisu. The lasagna came out barely lukewarm and lacked flavor. It didn't taste that fresh. The only good thing about the lasagna was that the layers of pasta sheets were nicely thin. Luckily, my meal ended on a decent note because the tiramisu was pretty tasty. This was the best thing I tried here. If you're coming here on the weekend, make sure to arrive at least 40-60min before closing, or else you might not make it onto the waitlist. House Salad: With an order of lasagna, you're given the choice of a soup or a salad. The soup of the day was tomato and broccoli, which seemed like a poor pairing with a red sauce lasagna. I opted for the house salad, which was fine. It was drenched in balsamic vinegar, but the components were well chosen. Mushroom Lasagna: My raison d'être. I love mushrooms, so I was expecting bites of umami goodness. Unfortunately, while mushrooms were definitely present texturally, they contributed little flavor. The dish mostly tasted like red sauce. This cafe is truly a gem! I cannot wait to come back. We stopped by on a sunny Saturday and expected a wait. The helpful host was able to accommodate us, as well as several 2-top tables, with the help of an upstairs room. Our lasagna and pasta dishes arrived not long after our salads were finished, even during a busy weekend lunch rush-- we were truly impressed. Possibly one of the best lasagna I've had in a minute. It was a very hefty piece, loaded with flavor and generous meat, with a perfectly crispy bottom that added another element of texture. - Spaghetti Carbonara - local champignon fresh mushrooms, smoked pancetta, touch of cream, grated Parmigianino. Fantastic balance of creaminess and cheesiness without being too strong or overbearing. Pancetta added a bite of texture and fattiness and was perfectly cooked. We were greeted right away and got a table for 3. The service was great and they were accommodation. We had a size of meatballs which were not on the menu , but the let us order as a side. The orders came with soup or salad and we both opted for the tomato soup. It was very bland and watery. I did enjoy the bread with the balsamic and olive oil dip though. When the lasagna came out in their cute little pans, I expected a bubbling hot dish, but what I got was a lukewarm dish with overly soft pasta sheets that was a bit mushy. Flavor was bland, too.
