It doesn't look like much from the outside, but we managed to snag the first outdoor table at 5:30PM on a Saturday evening and by the time we left around 6:30, the place was bumpin and packed, both indoors and outdoors. We received amazing service and appreciated the generous banchan selection, the complimentary steamed egg, soondubu, and even post-dinner Yakults! The galbi was perfection, while the pork belly was slightly tougher than I would've liked. Mapo BBQ is a name that I've known for many years. They're practically a legendary name in the KBBQ scene in Queens. I haven't been in awhile but they've recently renovated and have relaunched themselves. I went on opening day and wow - it was just as great as I remember. The new design looks very retro, with a crimson accent on the tables. I dig it though. They do offer a lot of different types of meat but what they are known for is the Mapo Galbi. The Mapo Sang Galbi (non-marinated) is also really good too but if you had to pick one, marinated is the way to go. It's perfectly juicy as you bite into it, it's just right.. not too sweet. They have this incredible simple condiment of sesame oil and minced garlic. Slather everything in it, it's great. So if you've been trying to find a solid place for KBBQ - here you go! read more

If I could, I would give them no stars. The other night they embarrassed a a sweet man who is taking his family out for dinner. He's a hard-working man who wanted to take his family to the place. You've been coming to for quite some time. He left a reasonable tip but not as much as they would have liked. They embarrassed him in front of his whole family and told him that it wasn't enough. It was more than 15% but less than 20%. It fell within the normal range and if he could have afforded more, he would have left a lot more because that's the person he is. They decided to embarrass him in front of everyone and demand more money telling him that it was the law. We all know it's not the law and we all get 20% and more sometimes it just doesn't call for it.. no matter what lie to him and told him it was a law so he gave them $30 more than what he originally gave them. They still seemed unhappy, but he was embarrassed, and they will never get my business again!!!! This is unacceptable and they should be ashamed of themselves. read more

Meat candy. That's the best way to describe Mapo BBQ's legendary marinated galbi ribs. Mapo BBQ is a humble corner Korean BBQ spot with both coal and gas stoves. It was an oddish vibe when we visited late Sunday, but service was prompt and comprehensive. In addition to the galbi meat candy, we got pork belly and the japchay. The pork belly was ok, not my favorite in comparison to other KBBQ. They also cooked it at a separate table which I found a bit odd. The japchay was awesome, and I'd definitely order this again. Overall I thought the food was really good, and I'd visit again if I was in the area. I wouldn't say the best time to visit is 10pm in a Sunday, and I'll keep that in mind for the next time I need meat candy. read more

So, I been craving Kfood for a good month or 2 now. Not just my usual to go restaurants. I wanted to go to a restuarant with a Hella lot of Banchan & I saw this place so I decided to go. Now, boy was I impressed with the Banchan! There was 10 dishes in total: kkakdugi, bean sprouts, salad, pajeon, acorn jelly, kimchi, cucumber kimchi, spinach, beans, celery (which I hate). I liked all the Banchan except for the celery of course. This is the 1st restuarant I've been to where they gave pajeon as Banchan. It was so crispy & good. The kimchis are pretty fermented so beware if you don't like strong kimchi. We finished all the Banchan & I was stuffed already. That's the thing I love abt many Banchan restuarants. Fills you up before you get to the entree. Anyway, I got haemul Sundubu jjigae which was mild. It was perfect. My friend got naengmyun which was pretty sweet. We ended up at Mapo for Mother's Day this year. Originally I choose to go to Gupji, but they only had take-out until Indoor dinning at 5pm. I remembered Mapo was right up the road, so we headed there. Got there and it wasn't crowded and we were seated immediately. Our waitress' were so nice, they spoke directly to our son... asking him how old he is and what would he like to eat. We go the Fried Dumplings for him in case he didn't want any of the meat, but he ate allot of meat without hesitation. Korean BBQ on charcoal grill. The meat just taste better when cooked on charcoal. My friends and I had an outdoor dinner tonight with our jackets on the whole time. I was glad that we opted to be seated outdoor even it was only in the 40s degree because the 'smoke' indoor was too overwhelming! We ordered the kalbi , sang kalbi, noonkot kalbi, pork short rib, beef tongue, squid bbq and haemool pajun (seafood pancake). Overall pretty good quality food and quite flavorful. However I wasn't too keen on how they rush you like some other K-BBQ restaurants when they 'cook' the meats for you. You can't really enjoy the meal while being rush out like that. Easily one of my favorite Kbbq! The owners here speak both Chinese, Korean, and English fluently, and are pretty nice! The kbbq here is cooked over charcoal and it creates an INCREDIBLE taste and smell. There aren't many other charcoal kbbq in NY that I know of. I highly recommend the marinated beef and pork ribs. Both are cooked for you perfectly juicy and tender. The side dishes are so plentiful that there really isn't much space left on the table. They're also made so well! Only issue is that sometimes the fans do not circulate very well if everyone is eating bbq, and it can get a little smoky in the restaurant. Your clothes will probably smell like bbq! It's definitely not the prettiest place and there's only about 12 or so tables I think, but it's still totally worth it. read more

This was a cool experience! I've never had Korean bbq before, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I wasn't disappointed. The meats were cooked in the middle of our table on a charcoal grill. All of the sides (ban Chan) were so good, especially the potatoes and cucumbers. We got there right at 11 on a Saturday and we're seated right away and received great service. Kbbq, it's been awhile. All staff wears masks and tables are sanitized between parties. There's sufficient napkins and hand sanitizer at each table. This spot has a decent amount of outdoor dining, the ceiling for the outdoor dining area has open slots for air to ventilate, there are sliding doors to prevent wind, bbq/charcoal grills, outdoor seating. fast service. I usually order the Mapo marinated bone-in kalbi eand some other meat. Their Japchae had lots of stir fried heat to it. Many banchans comes out, with steamed egg, tofu soup, lettuce and sauce for wraps. They wont grill the beef tongue on the grill, they just serve it plain-like, blanched/boil. The tongue is sliced too thin, it's chewy and tastes overcooked. Beef tongue is a must for me. read more

I don't do take out because it always tastes better when you eat in. The ladies that work here are like your next door ajhummas. Rough around the edges but friendly. They are good at what they do. I used to frequent this place quite often years ago but for whatever reason haven't been back until recently. Still very good and just as good as I remembered. Different wait staff but the owner remembered me which was pretty nice. It has been a few years. The restaurant is located right by the LIRR station, I believe it's Murray Hills, and it's a pretty busy area as far as restaurants go. There are plenty of Korean BBQ places but Mapo's definitely stands out. There is street parking but that can be iffy depending on the time of day. Some of it is metered some if it is street parking. They do have Valet here but I'm not sure if it is just certain hours. The place can get busy as well depending on what day of the week and time of day. They have a waiting area but it is an enclosed awning area so it's not quite inside but it's definitely warmer than standing outside. The inside isn't too big as there are probably a dozen or so tables. They can seat decent sized parties but only one at a time, as most of the tables are four tops. Each tables also has it's own grill in the middle of the table as well as a smoke stack above in case it gets too smokey but it generally doesn't get to that point. They have all types of meat to chose from, beef, chicken and pork, and brisket as well. The brisket cooks in it's own grill as it wouldn't cook well on the grill in the table. Once you order, they bring out the coals for the grill which is very hot and they drop it into the table grill. The service is really good here as well as they basically cook and cut up the meats for you. Sometimes, I like to do it myself but I prefer when they do it as they are definitely better at it then I am. The side dishes here are the best and there are plenty of them. They are pretty good at bringing out seconds on some of the side dishes if you like certain ones. Again, pretty good service here. I always leave this place stuffed and happy. We ordered a number of dishes but we all walked out very disappointed and dissatisfied. First of all the food was very mediocre. Some of the soup dishes they give you mostly cheap vegetables and almost no protein. Even the scallion pancake with seafood had very little seafood inside. On the big bowls of soup, they are mainly water and basically very little inside. On the 2 beef soups that we ordered, the beef was more reasonable but the soup bases were bland. We have eaten in many Korean restaurants but this may be our most disappointing Korean experience. The worst thing was that the bill came and it wasnt cheap for lesser quality stuff. After a transition from one state to another and lack of kitchenware (for the moment), has lead to exploring the local cuisine on an extreme level. To be fair though, New York City has treated us to more good meals than bad. But have you ever gotten to the point where you are sick of every kind of food and you don't even know what you want anymore? That was me a few days ago, so I began researching Korean BBQ because it's something that I haven't had and always wanted to try. I love Korean food so it just made sense to try it. I read blogs, yelp reviews and watched vlogs and ultimately decided that this was going to be the place to pop my KBBQ cherry. Upon entering, you are sat at a table with a small fire pit in the center. The waitress seemed intent on us ordering quickly, but at that point I wasn't quite bothered. I knew what I wanted and ordered the galbi ribs, for a whopping $40.00 a serving. My partner ordered the same. Within minutes a man came over with charcoals to light up our fire pit and a woman brought over a variety of side dishes. As we began indulging in the side dishes, the waitress came over with about a 1/2 lb. of meat and began cooking it on the grill right in front of us. We enjoyed the entertainment of having our food cooked in front of us and our waitress made sure to keep our side dishes filled. She even showed us how to roll up our meat in lettuce and suggested numerous toppings to add. Even though I felt it was slightly over priced, I was happy to pay for what had really been a great meal until I checked in on Yelp and attempted to use the 5% off promotion Yelp had advertised. The cashier out right refused to accept it and was very rude. This left a bad taste in my mouth and for this reason I will not be giving this establishment my business. read more

As authentic as they come. My gf and I had a Xmas eve lunch here and it was sublime. We had the mapo marinated beef short ribs and it was worth every penny. The banchan was on point perfectly balanced. Bibim nangmyun was refreshing and delicious. Yuchaejung was meaty and full of Korean roots and veggies. I'll focus on two items to give you an idea of how meticulous and homemade this place is. Most places buy factory made dumplings. I noticed their dumplings had tofu instead of glass noodles as per of its filling. My mom put tofu in her dumplings because it keeps it more most and it is more expensive then glass noodle. I can be wrong but the dumpling skin was I believe made of potato stark which is more expensive and has a better chewier mouth feel than regular dough. Lastly they had a baby anchovy banchan with peanuts and some daejang. They didn't cheap out and get the big anchovies. They got the baby baby ones. My girlfriend and I were looking for a fun place to eat and ended up at this unassuming Korean BBQ joint in Flushing, near the Murray Hill LIRR station. It's not particularly impressive inside. But that's not why you're there. As the old saying goes, "You can't eat ambience." What you do get to eat at Mapo BBQ is quite good. She'd been there before, so I let her order. It was "something" for two. I left the table to wash my hands and returned to find a delightful and delicious assortment of sides/condiments/whatever surrounding the covered stainless steel pit in the center of our table. A moment later, one of the waitstaff came by with a giant tin of white hot coals and placed in the pit. That was followed by a grate and a giant slab of beef. I was first impressed by the size. My guess was that it weighed at least two pounds. "That's for two," I asked. (Spoiler alert - yes, it was.) A few moments later, another member of the waitstaff came by with a pair of tongs and a scarily-sized pair of scissors. She cut the meat into a three strips. After a few minutes of flipping and turning, it was snipped into progressively smaller portions and ultimately bite-size pieces. I don't know what cut of beef that was, but it was the most tender, flavorful steak I've had in a while. We wrapped it in lettuce, ate it directly from the grill, or dipped in this wonderful paste whose flavor I couldn't place other than to say it was delicious. Each bite was a delight. We actually managed to polish that thing off along with quite a few of the sides and didn't feel stuffed. With the check, they gave us two shot-glass-sized bottles of a probiotic, actually some sort of drinkable yogurt that had a flavor reminiscent of a creamsicle. My date didn't want hers, so I drank both. Yum. Speaking of yum, we didn't order dessert and I never looked at the menu so I don't even know if they offer. But I would suggest that if you finish off before 9 pm that you stop at the Croffle House just around the corner. (See my other review.) That's another great place in the neighborhood. This was my first time eating Korean BBQ. When I walked in the door with my three friends, the first thing I noticed was the amazing smell of food cooking. I had no idea that there would be grills with lump charcoal in the center of every table. When we sat down we were immediately served tea and then took a look at the menu. Despite the language barrier, the waitress was very helpful. We ordered three meat dishes and a rice dish, so the four of us could share. Right after we ordered, side dishes and sauces started showing up on the table. We enjoyed the corn dish so much we ordered a second. There were several sauces, a few spicy and a BBQ sauce with sliced onion that I'm told Mapo is known for. We had an egg dish that came to the table still cooking, and there were lettuce leaves we wrapped the meats in. All in all I was very happy with my first Korean BBQ experience. Only con: they will rush you out when they have a crowd of people waiting for a table. This is not a place to linger. Pros: Charcoal so your meat is EXTRA DELICIOUS. All the banchans!!! The spicy raw crab during crab season is AMAZING. Their steamed egg is my favorite. SUPER THICK and DELICIOUS galbi. We've gotten it elsewhere. It's NEVER as good as it here. It's super marbles and juicy and perfectly marinated. My in-laws who never eat (they're tiny and they tend to share an entree between the two of them) will HOUSE the galbi here. Cruising right along with my new found appreciation of Korean BBQ I asked my girl to find us somewhere new and so we landed here. After a decent Uber right from our home base we arrived in what I like to think the Korean BBQ capital on the east coast.....Flushing Queens. You'd be hard pressed to find bad BBQ in this neighborhood and completely thankful for all the choices. Keep in mind this is one of the rare ones where they kind of close early during the week....most stay open well past midnight and others are 24 hours. But alas, yummy Korean food and even though we didn't walk in right at closing (which I would never do) I thought we might be pushing it. Never fear, after we quickly sat down a chorus of food was put in front of us and the middle burner was cranked up to start the show. All told (I would like to tell you what we ordered but my Korean girl just said a bunch of things and meat showed up) $115 for the entire spread with beers. Great Korean barbeque restaurant, but 1st you have to find it. A little buried away in a small section of Korean barbeque restaurants. Finding parking is a nightmare, but fortunately they contracted out private valets to park your car if you so desire, listen, use them, it's worth it. The place is very small but gives you the illusion that it's bigger by lining one side of the wall with mirrors. One of the big draws of this place is the use of wood charcoal and cuts of Angus beef kalbi. After ordering the banchans start arriving at our table, they give you plenty of little plates of deliciousness that literally covers up every square inch of your table. We especially liked the Korean steam egg (Gyeran jjim) The smoke from the wood really infuses a nice light smoky flavor. The beef is tender and tasty. They give you plenty of romaine lettuce for you to wrap up the kalbi and fill it with all the sauce, paste and banchans around your table to wrap up a delicious pocket of yumminess! We ordered the pork belly as well, though not as flavorful as the beef, the variety of banchans and sauces woke up the flavor of the pork belly. As a note the pork belly is not cooked on the wood charcoal, but instead on a portable gas stove top pan. The Service staff here is top notch, our waitress not only took our order but cook and cut up the meats for us as well. Our waitress was grilling the kalbi with one hand and grilling the pork belly on another grill with the other, she was a multitasking beauty. We also ordered a casserole of seafood tofu. The tofu was silky smooth and the kimchi broth was delicious. The casserole had clams, shrimp, squid and of course tofu. It went well with a bowl of rice. A Great big shout out and thank you to the guy's who help set and take away the wood charcoal pots. Now get ready to dish out some dough because the meats are not cheap. The price you see on the menu is a serving size for 1 person, not 2. You don't get a lot of food for the price, so if you're really hungry, get ready to shell out some good money. I was thinking the same exact thing as my lunch partners; is it Kalbi or Galbi? Such novices we are. I also pondered if that juicy, tender, charcoaly, marbled meat that we kept ordering was Kobe or the likes thereof, but it's called Kalbi/Galbi. Oh, what the heck do I know? When I come back to Mapo BBQ, I will try to find parking immediately, which is hard to do, 'cause everyone has a freaking car and residential and commercial street parking sucks! No, maybe I'll just take the LIRR, because it's directly across the street from Mapo. Yup, that's what I'll do, I'll take the train instead. That way I'll get to the restaurant faster and then get to sit my derrière down quicker and then get to order nothing else but that Kalbi/Galbi and maybe I'll include that awesome seafood pancake while enjoying the assorted banchan. This was my first foray into the infamous Flushing area for food. And I had the Grand pleasure of doing so with some friends & fellow Yelpers Cindy L., Pat F., & Steve M. I need to say thank you to Yelp, because where else can you get a group of strangers to meet each other in a totally unknown place to any of us, for a delicious shared meal?! Then we had the nerve to continue on to bar down the street for some cocktails, football & a few games of pool! The place was a little tricky to find but when we got there Cindy had already gotten us a table. It was a small place & simple in Decor. What I loved most was that it was real hardwood charcoal grills in the middle of the table. It really gave the meat an amazing flavor, oddly it wasn't smoky, just really really good. We started off with the Pork Belly & Kalbi, only to be told we had to order 2 meats for the grill..Huh?! Isn't that 2 meats?! The waiter went on to explain(Thank goodness for Stevie because his Spanish helped us with the waiter) that the Pork Belly gets cooked on an electric grill so that doesn't count. Oooooh ok, no problem we'll take an order of Pork Ribs also then. Of these meats I thought the pork would rock my tastebuds, but NOOO! They were good, don't misconstrue my meaning. But the GALBI or is it KALBI?! Holy Geez Moley! Talk about tender & flavorful! I cannot say I've had a better cut of meat more tender AND flavorful. My mouth is watering just reliving those moments. And the Side dishes were OFF THE CHARTS! I don't know the proper name for them but we had a table full of yummy goodness. Then there was the steamed eggs dish that came out bubbling hot, so fluffy, so differently delicious. There was macaroni salad, I wasn't a fan but my table mates enjoyed it. Grilled Corn, Kimchee Pancakes, Boiling hot Tofu Seafood soup(AWEsome!), multigrain rice, roasted garlic, onions, fried eel lacey stuff, Kimchee, Lettuce, etc. After all of that yeah we still wanted more, Hey! We're Yelpers! Would you expect anything different?! So we ordered the Beef Tongue & another order of the Beef Galbi/Kalbi. Sooooo Scrumdillyicious! I will say the food was great, but the best part was spending time getting to know my fellow Yelpers. What a privilege it is to be blessed by Yelp with such great cool people. Best kalbi in NYC? Maybe. Best kalbi I've had in Queens? Definitely. Located in one of the most highly concentrated Korean ethnic enclaves outside of Korea, Mapo BBQ is in the heart of it all in Flushing's KTown. Folks can get to Mapo BBQ with a 20 min walk from the end of the 7 line or take the Murray Hill stop just off the LIRR. Places like this cater to the Korean palate and the non-Asian presence is at near zero levels. Don't let that deter you from venturing to this side of town, as I've non-famously coined "Where there is a craving, there is a way." Anything less than a couple slabs of kalbi is unacceptable. Just as no one should limit themselves to a salad in a steakhouse, no one should skimp out on the BBQ here. People are here for the kalbi and at $28 a slab, it's no cakewalk. Everything is a feast at Mapo BBQ and they make sure every inch of the table is filled with some kind of dish. Be on the lookout for some of the grilled corn kernals and feel free to add a noodle dish on top of it. Korean food is pricey in general, just make sure you bring enough cash to cover any additional items your group might consider ordering. Most folks either walk or wait forever on their way to hunger, it's best to go big when coming out here. The staff is pretty efficient and can usually make some killer recommendations. On occasion I've found a few waitresses that are able to speak Mandarin and/or English, but Korean rules here. Food quality was fair but the service was terrible. We ordered the nonmarinated beef and marinated pork. Since they require you to order two minimum. The service was awful. They cooked the beef first and placed it on the side of the grill as it's ready to eat. Then they threw on raw pork on to the same grill and touch the already cooked beef. Besides that they also didn't do any tea refills or any of the side dishes. It's absurd at a Korean restaurant not getting side dishes refilled. Would we come back again?
