We live in a small apartment so every Thanksgiving we rent a room and cater dinner. This year we came out to Riiverhead and ordered the Thanksgiving dinner . I have to say the turkey was insane. I'm very wierd with meat and I don't usually eat much turkey but this was delicious. We had the mashed potatoes, creamed spinach and stuffing. Also came with rolls ... all was really good. The brisket chili mac after a cold day working outside is perfect. The service is also good, I'm always greeted nicely. Hidden gem that I wish I would have tried sooner. The food was great. Tried the Bama (pulled chicken) and the Tar Heel (pulled pork) . Both sandwiches had a lot of flavor. My boyfriend and I stopped in on a whim after attending a fair in Riverhead. This BBQ restaurant was surprisingly easy to find and highly recommended locals. Full Disclosure; my family is from the Gullah region of the south. I was brought up on farm to table dining, and my family took pride in the quality of the live stock used for our meals. I dont have a lot of faith in northern BBQ. Im almost always disappointed, either with the seasonings or the cooking method. I always go in with low expectations so that I can be delightfully surprised. The awesome: The ambiance and the service. This is such a lovely, homey restaurant. It's small, but the seating staged to its advantage. It was busy, but not overly crowded, and we were served immediately by a warm and friendly server. Id come again just for the kindness of the staff. So the good. The BBQ ribs are the best thing on the menu that I tried. They were tender, well seasoned, and the meat used was very good. The sorta good. The brisket and the burnt ends. The brisket was sliced very thin and a little dry. Ive had better at Hometown Brooklyn and Bark in Dumbo. Not bad by NY standards. Same for the burnt ends. I prefer less sauce and more caramelization. Also, they were a bit tough. Also- preferred Hometowns burnt ends, but they are better than Mighty Quinn in Forest Hills. The Ok: the Salmon, the coleslaw, and the mac and cheese. The salmon was very generously portioned. The 1/2 lb was enough for two meals. However it was a bit overly salted and the smokiness over powered the taste of the fish. The coleslaw was standard., the cornbread was ... meh. It really didn't have a taste. Not buttery, not salty, just a blank slate, reminiscent of white castle fries which mysteriously have no taste. The mac and cheese was just slightly better than boxed. The béchamel was loose and no real "cheese" flavor came through. My suggestion would be to switched to a "baked" version to be more authentic. Also, a more flavorful cheese blend would be welcome. Now for the part Im dreading, the awful. Truly the most awful things I tried on the menu were the Baked beans and the Kollards ( how they're spelled on the menu so don't @ me). Now-- I know I have southern roots so I wanted to begin with grace but my god. The "kollards" were bland and desolate. Almost bitter and obstinate in their refusal to hold flavor, and the beans?? I have eaten Campbell baked beans, Bushes.. all kinds of canned beans on the fly, but this is the most audaciously bad beans Ive ever had. I believe these were scratch made which means theres hope. Nothing smoky, savory or spicy, just sweet beans in a gravy of identifiable sweet sauce. Undoubtedly the worst dish I had here and the worst beans I've eaten anywhere. Ok now that thats done, I try never to judge a BBQ joint by its sides because lets be honest, we come for the meats, but the sides need work here. The meats are good. The ribs are better than good, but the sides bring everything down. I think if they listen to the customers who are constructively critiquing their options they can be "best in LI". Edit, please note how every time someone critiques the owner he becomes argumentative and defensive. Denis, Sir, - If I may? The locals love this restaurant because they have probably never been south of the mason -dixon line. There is nothing on your menu that compares to anything in Memphis or Houston, and anyone from the south who tells you otherwise is being kind. Your Ribs are great, I gave you that. But your sides are tragic. Your Kollards are basic and bland. Your Beans are a gastric disaster- a week later Im still shook at how awful they were and your cornbread had as much flavor as an unsalted rice cake. Despite this I would have still gladly recommended the Ribs and to a lesser degree the brisket (which gave par boiled by the way) but you going back and forth with people who spent cash at your establishment because they had issues with flavor is the most tasteless thing Ive had to experience... except for the cornbread. Learn how to take constructive critiques and season your sides with intention. If your burnt ends were as tender as your feelings we wouldn't be having this discussion. I checked this place out on the 8th, and WOW, was it amazing! It's a small place. You walk in, order at a counter, and they bring out the food. Pretty quickly too, I might add. It was delicious! I had the Combo Meats Platter with 2 Small Sides with the North Carolina Pulled Pork, Pastrami, one side of baked beans, and one of mac & cheese. The pork was super tangy and amazing. The pastrami was better than anything I've had in the city. The beans were great after getting a squirt of their BBQ sauce. The mac however could have been a bit cheesier, but that's just me. The girl working the counter was very pleasant and joked around with us. Later a couple of other employees came in, and they seemed very friendly as well. The place was nicely kept and clean, including the restrooms. I couldn't finish everything, and ended up with leftovers for another full meal. Very nice! I ordered the Tar Heal sandwich which is North Carolina pulled pork, coleslaw, and cheddar cheese on a sweet roll with a side of macaroni and cheese for $9.50. That's a steal in my book. The portion size is perfect for the price and filling. The mac n chez was so tasty and homemade like grandma's Sunday dinner. They also sell a plethora of cocktails and a few beers on tap for those who like to buzz with their BBQ. I sure do. Ordered the Jack Daniel's and lemonade - a fantastic combination of whiskey and lemons tasting straight from a lemon tree. My Lord did I enjoy my time at Maple Tree. The best BBQ spot in the area. I haven't had anything close to Texas BBQ in NY - but this place is so very close to it. It's also great to see the owner interacting with his customers. He treats his staff very well also. They're not losing stars for this, but I think they should try to get a crosswalk with flashing lights passed by the town of Riverhead because it can get pretty hard to cross that road if you're parking across the street. read more

I drive an hour from queens to go here. The prices are really affordable and you get great real bbq. The staff is cool and really nice. It's a nice location too. For our two sides we selected mac and cheese and crushed potatoes. The mac and cheese was a little creamy/cheesy but delicious, and the potatoes tasted as if there were vampires in Riverhead, so the extra dose of garlic would keep them at bay. In other words, the chef may want to consider easing up a little on the garlic. The ribs weren't dry or greasy. There are two sauce choices on the tables, sweet or spicy. Both aren't bad. If you request an additional sauce flavor there's a slight up charge. Overall the food was good and the portions were big enough to feed a family of three or four. The meal cost $55.00 plus $4.74 tax (8.625%), for a total cost of $59.74. There's a parking lot across the street, but most patrons dining in park in front. The next time you're headed to the Tanger Outlets or Long Island Aquarium, both only a few miles away, stop by Maple Tree if you like barbecue. The ambiance is quaint, like a log cabin, and the barbecue food served is comparable to that offered at the Legoland theme park in Goshen, New York. Stopped in for lunch with my mom and daughter after visiting the nearby aquarium. The place is small but cute and service was friendly. We had the two meat combo. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and had excellent flavor. The chicken however was raw in the middle. When we reported this, the response was that the chicken is smoked for hours so that's impossible. No substitute was offered and the chicken just went in the trash. That was disappointing, because we have really enjoyed this little bbq spot on previous visits. Their Mac and cheese is really good and sangria is nice as well. Herbed potatoes and bbq beans were bland sides. But those ribs were a standout, and I can still taste the delicious flavor of raspberry in the bbq sauce. 100% one of the top bbq food I've ever had in my LIFE. You would never notice the building from the street because it really just looks like a house, with a small sign hanging from the building. Their prices are pretty high, and your sandwiches doesn't come with sides so you're also paying seperately for that as well, which is NOT cheap either. I also don't believe there's a parking lot for this place - so many customers had to park on the main road, which is unsafe if you're handicap or elderly because people are flying down this road. We came upon Maple Tree BBQ as we headed from downtown Riverhead to Tanger Outlets and looked up the amazing reviews and had to see for ourselves and we were NOT disappointed! The BBQ sauce is tangy and perfectly hot or sweet. The Ruben was piled high & the sliders were perfectly filled in Kings Hawaiian rolls which were fresh & so soft. All the sides were great too. What a cute little restaurant. At first when you drive up you think it's going to be a total dive but it's super modern and adorable . They have a huge chalk board with the menu right next to the counter slash bar and they also have an outside patio. The waiter was extremely helpful and the service was phenomenal. He brought our food out super fast and came and asked us several times how we were and if we needed anything. We were extremely impressed with this place and would return . The prices were very fair for the amount of food and quality you were receiving. I give this place a 5 star all day. Partner and I heard good things about this place and stopped for only a small bite, since we had a large breakfast in the morning. We shared a 1/2 lb of pulled pork along with a side of cole slaw and cornbread. The pulled pork was on the money! There were shreds and chunks along with some slightly charred parts which became a softer texture due to the juiciness of the meat and the bbq sauce. The cole slaw tasted exactly how I like it...no overpowering vinegar or dijon, but very mild and almost sweet like KFC coleslaw. We had such a sweet young man come over to our table to check on us to make sure the food was ok and check in on us countless times and be sure to take away anything we were finished with. The crew at Maple Tree do an amazing job and everything is on point from the food, atmosphere and customer service. I stopped in on a Taco Tuesday and got the pulled chicken taco, smoked salmon taco, brisket taco, and a side of the burnt ends to try the BBQ.
