I added pecans to mine. I ordered the house potatoes and my son got hasbhbrowns. The hasbhbrowns had no seasoning on it at all. He took two bites and we shared my potatoes. The sweet tea was a 10/10. I'd definitely visit again but will try pancakes instead. The French toast was way too eggy for me.

This is why I love the Hotcake Emporium. This has become THE breakfast spot for my mom and me to visit when we want to catch up on life. It is near her house in Lawrence, but it is always pretty quiet and easy to hold a conversation. The food is tasty, too. Not the best breakfast I've ever had, but it is always delicious and filling. Mom gets eggs over medium with grits, bacon and hotcakes. The hotcakes (pancakes!) are large and fluffy and soak up the syrup like a pancake is supposed to. I usually have an omelet but I switched it up a bit and had the eggs benedict. It was yummy, but a little heavy handed with the hollandaise sauce so it ended up being a little one note. It was a little weird that most of the meals have the option of hash browns, home fries, grits or fruit (oxford commas are a hard, difficult, and tough habit to break. Ok, that feels a little better). However, my eggs benedict came with home fries or hashbrown and I had to pay extra to substitute grits. No worries. Worth it! Delicious savory grits swimming in butter and mom shared a piece of bacon so I could crumble it into this bowl of heaven. Service is always kind and attentive. The black coffee is hot and always at the top of my mug. I also love all of the windows. On a sunny morning, light floods the dining room which creates the perfect morning environment. This is a solid joint, and if you have someone you want to simply sit and talk with for 2 hours over good food and hot coffee, Hotcakes Emporium is a solid offering.

Stopped in for lunch. Downtown Fortville. It never looks like there is a lot of parking…read moredowntown, but I've always been able to find a spot fairly close to my destination. I love the small town feel!! The restaurant vibe reflects the town. Everyone is very welcoming. I didn't catch bartenders name, but she was very friendly to everyone at her bar. She told us her favorites on the menu. I appreciated her knowledge about the restaurant and the menu. The bar area seemed a little dark, but that actually enhanced the experience of an old bar. We only sat in the bar area, I believe there is additional seating in another room, but I didn't look. I opted for a grilled tenderloin and a cup of beer cheddar jalapeño cheese soup. The sandwich's are Ala carte. The sandwich was bigger than I expected, that would have been enough for lunch. The trick with grilled tenderloin is that many times it is over cooked, so it is dry. This was cooked to perfection; cooked but still moist. The sandwich, with the "garden" was awesome. Now to the soup. I think she said they use wee Mac as the beer. The jalapeño was puréed. There was crispy bacon crumbled on top; I did not care for the bacon. The soup was odd to me as I was eating it. Because of the texture, it reminded me of corn chowder. There was a little spice/flavor from the jalapeño. What was odd to me, was it didn't wow me like I thought it would, but I kept eating it. So in the end, I think I really liked it bc I ate all of it!!! The menu is not large, but has a good variety for its size. The desserts were impressive, I just didn't have room for it. I could easily become a regular there!!

The restaurant was a lot more kitschy than I was expecting, which I loved. Our waitress had a wonderful energy. She was very knowledgeable about the menu. The menu had several unique items. I ordered a Scottish soda called IRN BRU. I love trying food and drinks from around the world. It tasted like an Orange Crush soda. Our waitress said they were known for their Cauliflower soup. It was cold outside so soup sounded perfect. I also got a pepper jack grilled cheese. The soup came in a huge bowl. The combo of the soup and grilled cheese was very filling. My friends ordered the sticky pudding. I had a bite and it was delicious. I cant believe it's taken me so long to eat here. I throughly enjoyed it and cant wait for my next road trip.

In fact it is my favorite restaurant of all time. Sunday we stopped again. I had the British chicken curry and the fatoush. It was amazing as usual. That fatoush is so refreshing! My wife had the pork chop which comes with these amazing mashed potatoes with mustard seasoning that will blow your mind. She can never finish because it's so much food, which is OK with me because I help her out some. My favorite way to eat this is to mix a little mashed potato, mustard and pork chop together into one delicious bite. We were too full for dessert, but the times that we had the dessert here were spectacular as well. Thank you to all the people that work at Paynes, please don't change anything, you are the best!

The space itself is what appears to be an old schoolhouse, and it's incredibly warm and welcoming inside. There's a great mix of seating on the first floor, including community seating near a fireplace, smaller tables, and larger tables for groups. I noticed there's also an upstairs area that I didn't explore, but even just the main level felt homey and comfortable. It's definitely a spot I'd come back to for getting out of the house to work, bringing a laptop, or even meeting friends for a casual coffee date. The vibe is very cozy and inviting, and the staff was friendly and kind. The menu is thoughtfully curated, not overwhelming, but still offers a nice variety of syrups and flavors. My only small wish is that there were more loose-leaf tea options beyond black and green tea, but that didn't take away from the experience. Overall, this was a fantastic visit and a café I'd happily return to.

And at least for the holiday season, the interior looks incredibly cozy and inviting. If you have nowhere to go for a few hours, it would be a nice place to hang out and chat with friends. However, the coffee is fine, not spectacular. And the wait on the Tuesday morning I stopped by was about 25 minutes. Maybe it was quicker in the drive thru, but then you'd miss out on the decorations. Overall, it's a cute enough place to stop by on a day off for a leisurely morning, but I don't know that I would make a special trip.
