I was very disappointed with the restaurant. The service was the first thing that really made me have a bad experience. When you go into a place that everyone has told you really wonderful things, then you ask the waitstaff what they recommend and they look at you and say " chicken duh" and walk off... it makes you want to leave the restaurant. The chicken sandwich medium was delicious, but the sides weren't anything to write home about. The drinks were okay. My roommates and I were craving some hot and crispy comfort food on a cold fall day, and so we came here for lunch today. Keep in mind that Ma'ono shares the same space as Rachel's Ginger Beer. It's a family-friendly place since RGB offers both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink options. Ma'ono has a rather limited menu: fried chicken burger, fried chicken drumsticks (3), or fried chicken fingers (3). You can customize the spice level of the chicken though which ranges from naked (no spice) to hot hot hot (which has ghost peppers and other chilis). They also have sides sold separately: potato Mac salad, chili corn, and fries. I know previous pictures have shown Mac and cheese, but they must have discontinued that option because it's not on the menu anymore. I ordered medium spicy chicken fingers and Mac potato salad since I knew I would need a starch to go with my drink and chicken. I wish they had white rice or something less rich, but oh well. At first I thought the medium spicy chicken had no spice to it and was disappointed. But then I learned that they had mixed up my roommate's and my order so we switched chicken and it was much better. I'm not a huge fried chicken fan, but the chicken was tender, moist, and perfectly seasoned with cayenne pepper. It also came up with a choice of dipping sauce (honey mustard, bbq, or ranch) and so I chose honey mustard. It was a little too sweet for my taste, but it went well with the chicken. The gentleman that was taking orders had apologized and said it would be a 20 minuet wait before he could take more orders. I understood, I've been there in that exact situation in my career. When you're in the weeds there's nothing you can do except hold the line and push forward. Not a big deal. So we grabbed a table and waited.The people behind us, maybe not as understanding. The food: I still feel that the sandwich is still a bit over priced at $11. But I feel that the best deal is probably the chicken fingers. You get 3 pieces, but they are a good size. All the chicken is spiced to how you want it. By the looks of other people's reviews less is more. I do like spice but not the kind that doesn't allow me to enjoy the rest of my meal. So mild was perfect. The breading wasn't too thick and cakey, and had a great crunch. Their fries wasn't anything special. My daughter and I went here after hearing all the rave reviews about the chicken sandwiches. They were busy when we got there, and the guy at the window told us it would be faster for us if we ordered online...even though we were there standing right in front of him. So we did, expecting about a 30 min wait. After 45 min, I asked if my food was coming. The counter guy fumbled through a bunch of slips, told me my order never got ticketed, and said he would do mine next. Then I waited another 15 minutes for that to happen. After more than an hour had passed, we finally got our food. That was supposed to start the enjoyable part of the experience, but honestly I was underwhelmed. The sandwich tasted like every other fried chicken sandwich I've ever had, which wasn't necessarily bad, but certainly not as good as promoted, advertised, and rumored. I was actually eager to try the potato mac salad, but it was very disappointing. The pasta was more undercooked than stone cutter's dentist, and there was very little flavor at all. The fries, surprisingly, turned out to be the best thing they had...but even those were pretty standard with either cajun or some other type of seasoning sprinkled on them. This Ma'ono was the location inside Rachel's Ginger Beer at the U Village. It was very nice, as we sat on the outdoor patio on a warm spring evening and enjoyed the atmosphere. Turns out our hunger would have been better addressed had we picked up some pasta from Pasta & Co. next door (BTW their daily pasta salad is always wonderful). For the bill, just two regular sandwiches and two sides came to close to $40, and that didn't include the natural ginger drinks. Overall the trip was about $60. Even considering inflation, that's still pretty ridiculous IMHO...how could any family on a reasonable budget afford that? I had to keep reminding myself that everything in U Village is priced and tailored for the wealthy privileged 1% crowd...so that didn't surprise me. Overall a disappointment I'm sorry to say. If you have any desire for heat (I don't) they have the kind of spice levels other countries are accustomed too (I've heard of mild and medium bringing a great deal of tears). My honey loves their fries, and struggles to cross the bridge without considering a stop. The pickles are also a fabulous balance--love them! If they were more consistent (sometimes heavy on the breading and salty, sometimes light and perfectly made), they'd be tops in our chicken desires. While we've eaten at Ma'ono in West Seattle, this was our first time trying the chicken and it did not disappoint. We met some friends to do some shopping and ended up here for lunch. Everyone ordered a fried chicken sandwich with varying heat levels (mild-hot). We went with mild and left the hot version to the Nashville native. The chicken was juicy, crispy, and arrived relatively simply, nestled in a King's hawaiian bun with a bit of mayo, lettuce, and pickled daikon. We happen to cross this lovely little spot while in the university district for a quick meeting. It's located inside Rachel's ginger beer on the west side of University Village, and I must say it works well there! It's literally a window in the back right of the place are you walk up to in order from. The menu is not extensive, but there's a few things to choose from. Their chicken sandwich is the main feature. It's a pretty hearty chicken breast with some nice breading and dressed up with some homemade pickles and sauce. The one thing I will say about it, is that it lacked tons of flavor. It was kind of a middle of the road sandwich that looked very pretty. The bun was a sweet Hawaiian roll which was quite good, and definitely took the sandwich up a notch. We also had some fancy chicken strips. Those were good, though again the breading had less flavor than we were expecting. Did it come with the cheese sauce that was quite good! No way all of the different chicken options come with your choice of spiciness of the actual meet. It ranges from nothing all the way to what I imagine fairly hot. The chicken sandwich was $11, the chicken strips or something like seven and drum let's were about two dollars apiece. Sauces were $1 each with one free with the strips. Prices were a little bit steep, but overall things were good and about as expected for the area. The places pairs perfectly with the ginger beer spot it shares space with - this concept is something I hope to see more of! The sandwiches while pretty, had less flavor than expected. In our book, the chicken can't leave us wanting and it did here. Honestly, we liked it enough Along with the beverage we got at Rachels ginger beer, that we will probably be back. The chicken was the best part though. On the outiside it is crispy, and has a very good breading, and the spices brought the chicken to a whole other level! The spice was quite spicy but I could handle it but it was pretty good! It is pretty messy though and gets all over your fingers. It also got on my lips and made my lips burn for a bit, but that's part of the experience. I just can't imagine what it's like to get the hottest level! Okay, angry man-boy, it's true, I don't know your menu, but seething and fuming at me doesn't help. Communicating in a civil tone and posing questions to a first-time customer like me would help. Tucked in the back of Rachel's ginger beer in Uvillage, Ma'ono looks very unassuming. This place does not need a big restaurant to thrive because their chicken is THAT good. They give you option of a variety of spice levels from naked to HOT HOT HOT. You can get their drumsticks, tenders, or a sandwich. Their chicken on its own never really wowed me, although it is good, but the asian-influenced flavors going on in that sandwich are fantastic - wouldn't change a thing. This is my second time here and it never fails! It is on the right hand side of Rachel's finger beer. I ordered the crispy chicken sandwich and got some fries! We were lucky enough to snag a table outside otherwise there is limited indoor seating. Once we got the food the fried chicken was amazing. It was so crispy and had some much flavor. I am still trying to figure out the yellow cucumber of some sort inside because it adds a nice texture and some great flavor. I usually take mine out and eat it in between because it also is a good pallet cleanser. The fries were good as well! They had a ton of seasoning. We also got some of Rachel's ginger beer.
