This place is alright for me. I wouldn't mind eating it if everyone in my group wants to eat it but I would also not go out of my way for some either. I am not a big fan of Hawaiian buns. I just do not enjoy plain buns or breads that are have too much sweetness for no reason. So whenever I do come here, I just get the chicken fingers and it is one of those styles that are super savory and batter heavy. If you like that, you will love this place. I think it's alright. This place shares the space with Rachel's Ginger Beer and the service is just alright too.
TLDR: chicken was moist but I didn't like the flavor of the chicken or the pickled daikon. Kimchi Mac didn't have any kimchi in (hence the kimcheese naming) and the cucumber poké was hit or miss depending on the bite. Brought this home as a late night snack and while it was filling, the flavors didn't scratch that itch for me. The chicken has a Smokey undertone of spice. We tried the honey mustard (strong mustard flavor), the BBQ (favorite) and the galbi (friends said it was salty, I didn't mind it). The pickled daikon was sour but not in the bright crisp way that I was hoping. Honestly the Mac and kimcheese tasted like regular Mac w gochujang in it. Fries were okay; they said seasoned but honestly they just tasted like salted fries in my opinion. Besides the food, service was quick and the place is in the same room as Rachel's Ginger beer so my partner and I grabbed a drink while waiting. There is both standing and sitting room, and it wasn't busy on a Tuesday night. Overall ambiance is good for groups - a casual setting.
I don't know what happened but this place isn't what it used to be. Went for dinner and my husband and I were very disappointed. We walked right up to the window. There were only a few people there eating when we got there. Least busy I've ever seen. As we were ordering I noticed a bunch of tenders sitting out in the kitchen. They told us it was going to be about 10 min. When it took at least 15 minutes for our tendies to come out, I was relieved to be getting freshly fried chicken and NOT the chicken that was sitting out (for who knows how long?!) But when I bit into the chicken it was apparent that it was not fresh off of the fryer. It was warm at best. The spiciness level wasn't hot. Typically the medium hot is still pretty spicy. Not sure what is going on here, but definitely going downhill. The quality and the taste is not what it used to be. Sadly I won't be returning. There are far superior hot chicken restaurants in Seattle. Don't waste your time at this one.
Ok, but not great. Like most Seattle spots that get a lot of press. It's hard to live up to the hype. I ordered the three drumsticks. The batter is heavy on the paprika, and hence kind of has an almost burnt flavor. The meat itself didn't have much flavor. I don't think it was brined or marinated. They rely on your choice of spiciness in the batter for all the flavor. They actually messed up my order and gave me chicken tenders instead of drumsticks. I returned after standing in line next door at Starbuck's for one of their iced refreshing drinks. They were quite apologetic and a little bit embarassed I think at getting my order wrong. The ticket on my bag was correct. But the contents were not. They made it right immediately. They get props for that. So here's a tip...order your drinks before you make your food order. Stand in line at Starbuck's next door. Or stand in line at Rachel's Ginger Beer (the same space as Ma'ono). If you have your drinks ahead of time, your chicken won't get cold and soggy. You can dig right in to hot and crispy chicken. The order mess-up kind of worked in my favor in that regard. oh so yeah...crispy. They got that part right on the chicken. Very crispy. Very crunchy. But honestly, flavor was underwhelming. For a little less money I can get my chicken at Jollibee and be totally satisfied. That's not a dig or insult toward Ma'ono, it's just Jollibee is really tasty and I don't have stand in a separte line for drinks and another line for food.
Delicious fried chicken in University Village!! This kind of unassuming chicken joint is located inside of Rachel's Ginger Beer. Order at the little window in the back corner of the restaurant. They have a concise menu of fried chicken in its many forms with a customizable spice level. The space is pretty small, but we were able to snag a table on a weeknight. Grab a ginger beer or a mule from the bar while you wait! The food came out hot and quick on a weeknight. The fried chicken sandwich and chicken tenders with ranch were juicy, spicy, and so delicious! I have never had a combo potato and mac salad before, and I thoroughly enjoyed!
Ma'ono is like stepping into a time machine of flavor, with fried chicken stealing the show like it's the '90s all over again. The place is quite small but being inside Rachel's Ginger Beer feels like its always packed. We started with some French Fries, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Try them with the honey mustard dipping sauce. So so good. Now, onto the star of the show--the Chicken Sandwich. We went for the Hot Hot Hot heat level. Massive, crunchy fried chicken, nestled in soft buns and complete with a side of crispy lettuce and sauce. I felt my sweat glands activate but in a good way. The true star of the show was the chicken fingers. We got that "Hot". More jalapeno heat but perfect for the golden, crispy chicken fingers. I could eat this endlessly. Ma'ono is like a blast from the past in all the best ways. Whether you're down for a quick bite or a full-on feast, Ma'ono's got the flavor to take you back in time. And do grab some RGB to cool you down. Might seem a bit expensive but worth the experience, the flavor and the wonderful memories!
A reliable solid eat in U Village! Chicken is juicy & of nice size, and has a good amount of sauce / pickles / extras to add to the flavor. I appreciate that you can order in advance and pick up easily on a shelf inside the store front. Also has a large amount of seating with sharing space with Rachel's Ginger Beer, and has a really nice set-up of indoor seating that feels like you're outside (large window-doors that stay open on nice days that let in a great breeze). My go-to when I'm hungry and shopping in U-Village!
overall, i had high hopes for this place and while i was met with very friendly and helpful staff i had a few things to note. for the fried chicken sandwich, i found the meat to be a bit dense and therefore dry, perhaps not the right term for it, but i did find myself wishing that it was a bit more crispy and juicy. i did order almost the hottest level and was fairly warned that the hottest level was a no-refunds extreme heat experience-- so shying away from that i went one level down and found that the spice level was not even enough to prick my tongue (this is subjective as i would say i'm 8/10 good with spice and i enjoy somewhat spicy foods) i found the price to also be a bit high for what i got, even though the size of the burger's patty was fair, i still would consider it a touch expensive at $14 at the time (when a few blocks away you can get a better chicken sandwhich over at burger & kabob hut in udistrict in my humble opinion for $8) however, i do think that the flavors of the burger were present and the exterior was well seasoned and with that said, i do genuinely think that this type of fried chicken sandwich may suit some people's tastes as the spot has to be highly rated for a reason. speaking to the mac, i came here primarily because i was craving good mac n cheese in the area and was recommended this spot. overall, i did find the mac to be good and at a reasonable price! it was seasoned well and had a unique flavor. it tasted quite good and the touch of acidity from the kimchi added a nice depth of flavor to the mac and cheese. definitely a highlight of my meal and at a reasonable price for the portion size! finally, not at all a fault of the restaurants, but this spot is tucked away in the right half of an establishment that's shared with "rachel's ginger beer", honestly, i was a little confused where to line up when walking in and seating is a bit limited because the seats for rachel's ginger beer are typically reserved and the spot stays decently packed. i walked down to the shake shack to enjoy my meal in a nice air conditioned spot LOL. overall, i feel like i was a bit harsh with my review, but my takeaway is genuinely just that i wasn't blown away by the chicken sandwhich in terms of texture or spice level, and a lot of that could have been me setting my expectations too high. the mac however was excellent and definitely deserves a try! great seasoning and value there. overall: 7.25/10 taste (burger): 6/10 taste (mac): 9/10 price (burger): 7/10 price (mac): 9.5/10 going to round down to 3 stars for now, but i'm happy to give this place another shot, i had a pleasant experience overall with ordering, the wait time despite the crowd, and the presentation of my food. definitely would come back for the mac and to try the max spice level on the chicken sandwhich -- or perhaps to try their chicken and other menu items outside of the sandwich format :)
YUMM! Get the chicken tenders or the legs. It's so much more food than the sandwich, but cheaper! I get medium spice which is the perfect amount in my opinion! I also chose ranch - the other two dressings are good but they overwhelm the spices on the chicken. Skip the sides - they're overpriced and not that good. They share a store with Rachel's Ginger Beer. which happens to be the perfect pairing for fried chicken. The inside is cute and perfect to eat with friends.
Ma'ono is always a solid, good portioned choice in U village that has quick service and good vibes. I ordered the BBQ pulled chicken sandwich because I wasn't craving fried chicken, and was really surprised at how juicy the chicken was and the BBQ sauce had fantastic flavor. I would HIGHLY recommend trying this underrated menu item. The fried chicken sandwich was very solid and a great higher-end choice over other options in the area. The mac salad was pretty standard.
It was okay. To start off, it was hard to find since it's tucked away in the corner of Rachel's Ginger Beer. There is nowhere to bus yourself so after we ordered the only open table was one that was still dirty and full of plates for five minutes until one of the workers took the plates but didn't even wipe the table. Also they don't give you water and there is nowhere to refill your water so you have to wait in line with the people wanting to sample and get ginger beer just for a cup of water. The food was nothing memorable. It was just an overpriced $11 chicken sandwich and was also kinda dry but the flavor was okay. The potato mac salad was alright, I feel like I could get a container of potato mac salad from Costco for cheaper and the same experience. I wouldn't come here again, but it wasn't the worst food I've ever had, it's just not worth the price. The place was cute though. read more
I was not a fan of this place when they first open but after giving it some time, I'm addicted!! The chicken is cooked to perfection and the fries have a perfect amount of seasoning. While there isn't much seating in the restaurant itself, u village did an amazing job by closing down the streets and offering outdoor seating to the public. read more

Easily one of the best spicy chicken sandwiches in town and probably my favorite. With great fries and sauces to boot, this is a real winner. What puts it over the top is being paired with Rachel's Ginger Beer which not only works to cool the heat, but also pairs well with the flavors of the food. 4 Stars. Based solely on the chicken. This location is not easy to find at all. It is a tiny window pop up style that lies within Rachel's Ginger Beer. This is not the typical "Fried chicken" you can expect from per say a Popeye's. For the breading I would say it is in between Ezell's style and Popeye's so if you're the extra crispy fried skin lover, you won't get that here. What you will get here is piping hot, tender, moist loins of chicken that where you instantly notice a higher quality grade of chicken. I've had them in the burgers (the buns are great) and naked, and very happy both styles. Be warned, all spice levels here are 1-2 notches above what you may be used to. If you're a 3 star spicy out of 5 usually, go with the medium or even mild. The HOT choice will burn your innards and you will feel it for the next few days. Additionally, I suggest going mild because for me, I personally don't like extra "flavor" or sauce, or hotness in anything I eat. Why? Because these add ons take away from the true essence of what you want to eat in the first place. The HOT sauce option all I could taste was FLAME, no chicken! LOL. So go with the Mild if you like to eat chicken! Pro Tip: If you ever wanted to feel what it would be like to sit in a Volcano, order the HOT, eat it, and you will feel the heat before self combusting. read more

Overly fried and bland - disappointing. Despite the spice level, the fried chicken was lacking flavor. Saw piles of premade fried chicken sitting around in large batches in the kitchen - lukewarm fried chicken not terribly tasty. Didn't care for the mac n cheese - super oily and heavy, the oil literally pooling on top. Kale salad was terribly bland, basically tasted like someone dumped the kale straight out of QFC without any dressing. Opted for the chicken fingers but won't be back for the sandwich. Luckily Rachel's Ginger Beer helped sweeten our disappointment. Was very excited to check out this newish location at University Village but will be happy with Rachel's for a tasty ginger beer next time. read more
I think it's okay, and there is just too much hype about this place, since it's the closest place to get a fried chicken sandwich in University District. The service is usually pending on how busy they are, and service can be super good, or the complete opposite. I ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich in a Medium Heat, and Fried Chicken Drumsticks. The Fried Chicken Sandwich wasn't really spicy at Medium level spice, it tasted more like mild. Everything in the sandwich complimented each other with the sweetness from the King's Hawaiian Bun, the tanginess and crunch from the Daikon Pickles, and slight saltiness from the chicken. The chicken was also more on the drier side for my taste. The Fried Chicken Drumsticks definitely was more juicier then the sandwich, and was super crispy, BUT it was bland for my taste, and the honey mustard dip didn't really add much to the chicken. A neat thing is it's just a few steps away from Rachel's Ginger Beer, so it's a 2 for 1. read more

I've been wanting to try this place ever since I saw Mikey Chen's raving reviews. And dang, this place did NOT disappoint! I got here around 2pm on a Saturday and it was still pretty busy despite assuming the lunch crowd would've died down by then. You can choose to order via online or at the front, which I opted for the former. Regardless of how you order, it takes a while to come out because there were a ton of orders. Totally worth the 20 min wait though. I got the Fried Chicken Sandwich (Medium Spice), Fried Drumsticks (Medium Spice), Mac and Kimcheese & Fries. Sandwich was delicious - fluffy, sweet bun with crispy chicken, crisp lettuce, and some Daikon pickles that cut through the heaviness. Since I like spice, I found the Medium wasn't enough and will opt for Hot next time. On the other hand, the drumsticks Medium had a nice kick. Meat was tender, juicy. Mac and Kimcheese was creamy, cheesy (with a bit of spice). Fries were seasoned well and crispy. Definitely a must try - for those living in Seattle and visitors alike. read more
There are so many new restaurants popping up at the Universtiy Village, I can barely keep up! Ma'ono Fried Chicken is a new addition to the Village. It is located right next to the main Starbucks, which is directly across from Pottery Barn. The mac and cheese ($5) looked incredibly mouthwatering from all these Yelp photos and I simply had to order it. It turned out to be somewhat flat tasting. The Korea chili topping added very little flavor to it. The $8 Crispy fried chicken fingers (with honey hot-mustard dip and daikon pickles) were very dry and mostly overly cooked skin. There was not enough meat to it. I don't think I'd try it again. The highlight of my meal was indeed Fried Chicken Sandwich ($11). It is crispy fried chicken breast on a King's sweet bun with daikon pickles, kewpie mayo, iceberg. I added the cheese sauce with an extra 50 cents, but not sure if I am a fan of the cheese sauce. The chicken sandwich itself, on the other, was simply delicious. The meat was tender and juicy. The skin was crispy and not overly done. It is somewhat messy but very flavorful. The vibe was casual. However, the food did take a little bit to be served. No cc minimum. This place reminds me of Fuku+ from NYC. Certainly, a decent spot to fill your fried chicken craving! read more

As a fried chicken fan, I am always on the search for a yummy place. Despite the glowing reviews of this place, my friends and I felt a bit let down by Ma'ono for the fried chicken. Located literally inside Rachel's Ginger Beer (RBG) store, Ma'ono is easy to find if you know where RGB is. Once you're inside, go to the cash register on the right, place your order, pay, and then chill at the nearby tables. You will be given a number and the food will be delivered to you. Food that I tried: -Fried Chicken: way too dry, hard (so tough to bite!), and overall, a bit too salty for me to enjoy. If you order the fried chicken, you can get it either in a sandwich format or individual pieces. In addition, you can select what spice level you want for the chicken. The thing that disappointed me the most, was when my chicken piece(s) is smaller than my sauce cup. Ai. Not worth $12 for 3 pieces of chicken + an extra side of honey mustard ($1 each). -Mac & Cheese: Veryyyyy creamy, tasty, and perfect for sharing since this felt pretty heavy on my tummy after I ate it -Fries: If you opt for the loaded fries, it's like eating nachos except with jojos/fry wedges vs chips. Slathered in cheese and such, this is a cheesy appetizer and is great for sharing. Overall, this was a so so experience for me in regards to the fried chicken. I recently reviewed the location in West Seattle and I said I was kind of disappointed as I thought this location was better. After revisiting this location I can confirm that I do prefer the chicken sandwiches at this location more. I think they are crispier and spicier and for a spicy chicken sandwich that is what I want it to be. It's a cool vibe too as it is a walkup window inside of a Rachel's Ginger Beer. So you can have some high quality ginger cocktails with your sandwich and that's a nice touch. When in the UVilliage this is my go to spot. read more
Trendy ambience that's perfect for a chill meal with friends. Very delicious chicken sandwich, but $11 is on the higher side for it. I got to try the chicken sandwich in both medium and hot spice levels. The meat was a decent size and juicy as well as super flavorful and crispy. The hot one made me sweat a little bit but it was a savory spice that makes you come back for more. It wasn't at all painful lol. The condiments played great supporting roles that made the overall burger taste wonderful. I'll come back to try the HOT HOT HOT sandwich next time! read more
OMG. Their chicken sandwiches are great. I order the mild spice level and it it pretty spicy. My son gets the medium spice on his chicken and usually has a tough time with the spice level. Sandwiches are pretty ridiculous. Very flavorful. I would give it a five star if the drinks (Ginger Beer) were included when you order...you need to go to a different area to purchase drinks. Also, a bit on the expensive side for a lunch. Hard to find parking, be patient. Also, there are no restrooms in this establishment. read more

One of the best chicken sandwiches I have ever had! I've probably been in there five times. I get the medium, the perfect amount of spice for me. Sandwiches have always been hot and freshly made. I love the sweet pickles. My knocks on the place are that the fries are too expensive, the slaw is also overpriced on top of being subpar slaw. Never had the poke. I also don't understand why they don't have drinks. I realize RGB is there, but I just want a soda. These are things I can look past for the amazing sandwiches! read more

My friends have been recommending me this place but I think it is sightly overrated. I ordered the chicken burger with hot level, and the hotness completely overpassed the flavor. I only tasted spiciness. The chicken was great though, at least it wasn't dry. Maybe next time I'll try their mild one and figure out the flavor again. read more
After a photoshoot, my friends & I decided to go to Maono in University Village. I went w/ their fried chicken sandwich & a side of fries. There is a lot of emphasize when it comes to the spice levels so I decided to play it safe & chose Mild for the heat level. I'm glad I chose mild however because I think it was a good amount of spice. It wasn't terribly hot but it was still fairly spicy. Combine that w/ a sandwich that has good taste & flavor, you can't help but to indulge until it is gone! Definitely would want to return & see just how spicy their "Hot" level is. read more

Legit food to fuel your comfort food cravings. The only reason for no 5 stars is that this place can be painfully slow when it's busy. Like you'll need to wait 20-30 minutes for your food...so don't come hangry like I did. Poor serving gal seemed a bit frazzled. She dropped off fries and said "here's your food" and tried to run off. Luckily we were able to quickly ask if our other food was on it's way...It had either been forgotten or dropped at another table, but we soon got our full order. I think our total wait for food was 32 minutes. Sadly some people that ordered after us were getting their food first. Our order: Mac & Cheese ~ yum! The green onions and seasoning on top makes a nice addition. Nice and creamy. Fries ~ similar to jo jos. OK. Ranch sauce was good. Chicken Sandwich ~ quite tasty. The medium sauce packed a bit of a punch. Ordered with cheese sauce and it came on the side...tasted better with ranch on it. Big juicy piece of chicken perfectly fried. All of this food was plenty to share between two people. Total cost was around $25. Nice addition to RGB so you can nosh on some munchies while you drink! read more

YUM!!! I am a fan!! I usually get the spicy chicken sandwich --be careful cause the spice level is no joke! I have a high tolerance of spice but cannot handle the spiciest level. The chicken is nice and juicy and there's a good crust on the outside. Love the pickles too! I will say it's a bit overpriced -- but so is a lot of restaurants/stores at U Village. I also recommend the potato Mac salad... sooooo good!! My friend got the chicken fingers with honey mustard. I was not a big fan of the honey mustard cause it was very horseradishy but that's just preference. This spot is great place for lunch after some shopping. There is outdoor seating which is great for a sunny day. Check it out! read more

My boyfriend and I ordered the three piece drumsticks with medium spice and a side of fries. The medium spice was not spicy at all so definitely go up a level if you usually order medium spicy level at other restaurants! I love the skin on the drumsticks, they always make it extra crispy!!! The last time we came here, the chicken was very juicy. However, today the drumsticks were pretty dry and I was very disappointed. I guess you're playing roulette now when you order their drumsticks. read more

I've been here two times and was satisfied both times. The chicken in the chicken sandwich is big and very well seasoned. I also like the daikon pickle that they include. The first time I went, the chicken was cooked perfectly, very nice and juicy, but this time the chicken was a little dry. We also got the fries and the potato Mac salad and they were both pretty good! The fries were crispy and well seasoned and the potato Mac salad, though a little pricey for the size, was still pretty tasty and you should definitely try for the first time. Definitely recommend if you're craving a chicken sandwich! read more

There's a lot of hype about this restaurant and I'm sure it meets it but sadly, I think I ordered the wrong food item. My friends all ordered the spicy drumsticks while i ordered the spicy chicken sandwich. The sandwich itself was good; nice buttery buns with korean pickles. Sadly not enough sauce and the chicken was too rough and dry. I had to slather on ketchup to finish it. Other than that, I'm def down to trying their drumsticks next time! My friends said it was good but overpriced since KFC taste slightly better. I guess I'll have to be the judge of that the next visit! read more
I had such high expectations for this chicken sandwich. The chicken itself was very dry and relied on the lettuce, peppers, and mayo to make up for the lack of juiciness you come to expect with a great check sandwich. For heat level I got "hot" and it was certainly underwhelming from a spiciness perspective. The bun was my favorite part of the entire sandwich. The fries were nice and crispy and it felt like the seasoning on the fries had more heat than the sandwich! $16 for an underwhelming sandwich and French fries is a bit too high in my opinion. Yoo this place is fire! Awesome chicken sandwich that will put Chick-fil-A to shame. Nice heat, good flavor, they put this pickled daikon on it that gives it a over the top flavor. The kimchi Mac was pretty good too. Was hoot to be a little more spicy but it was good. Overall this place is a winner. read more

Little window located inside Rachel's Ginger Beer. Small menu but delicious! They have a fried chicken sandwich or chicken tenders available. Both are big portions and you can pick your level of hotness! They also have a few sides to choose from. There's a really delicious potato Mac salad that's easily shareable. Plus they have lots of dipping sauces to choose from if you choose to order the fingers or fries! I personally loved the sandwich! The sweet buns mixed with the spicy chicken were amazing! They put just the right amount of mayo and lettuce. I'm not a huge fan of pickles, so I took them off. But the chicken breast was huge and perfectly cooked. I chose mild hotness but will probably go one level up next time! Woot! And the drinks from Rachel's Ginger beer are a bonus! The open space, patio, and large family style table inside are very comfy. I'll definitely be back and want to try the other location in West Seattle! read more

This is honestly one of the best fried chicken places I have ever been to! We were in Seattle for a week on a business trip, and being from the south I love fried chicken. I was super excited to find this Hawaiian fried chicken place with great reviews on yelp. We went to the one near the University, which is just counter service in a Rachel's Ginger Beer store in a shipping plaza. Overall, the selection here compared to the restaurant is limited (they mostly have just the sandwiches, tenders, and drumsticks) We ordered one of the chicken drumsticks at a medium level spiciness to share. Service was a little slow (10-15 mins), but acceptable since I believe they fry all their chicken to order (I'm willing to wait for better quality chicken)! The spice level was perfect for us and tasted of cayenne and paprika. The chicken was on the oilier side, but the crust was crunchy and evenly distributed. The pickled stuff on the side was great to balance out the heat and oiliness of the chicken. The chicken was so good we went right back to the counter and ordered another! I highly recommend this place for good fried chicken! read more

We got a mild fried chicken sandwich, fries, and the Mac & kimcheese. The sandwich was SO good- chicken was juicy inside and crispy outside. Piled with lettuce and thick slices of daikon. went here with my boyfriend right after studying and overall it was a nice experience! it's located inside a ginger beer bar and it has limited seating but it was very clean. I got the chicken sando in medium and it was not spicy at all! so if you can handle spicy food I definitely would recommend getting hot. the sandwich gets a solid 9/10 we also got the potato mac salad and the kimchi mac. loved the potato mac but the kimchi one was more or less subpar- not very cheesy/thick and more saucy. potato mac - 8/10 kimchi mac - 7/10 read more
To sum it up, it's fried chicken with literally NO SEASON! The crisp on the strips was so intense it cut up the top gum part of my mouth and I had to stop eating due to it hurting. I'm sorry but that just isn't going to cut it lol. They are very large pieces with 3 different choices for dipping sauce (you'll need it). The stars are for the bar staff! Super sweet gals that went above and beyond and the interior of the place is really nice. I'll never go back though , because the food was Bland with a capital "B" LOL just being honest. I was craving a juicy fried chicken sandwich and decided to try out Ma'ono Fried Chicken. Overall the meal was a bit pricey for what it was, but the sandwich was pretty big. I got the mild and my boyfriend got the medium spice and unfortunately they both tasted the same. I wish they spiced the sandwiches up more. We also tried and Mac and Kimcheese and that was spicier than the medium sandwich. The fries were pretty tasty and had a spicy seasoning. read more
