Brian was the nicest bike shop owner we met on the Outer Banks. We came down for a week during off-season in March. I needed an adult tricycle. The shops i called/visited hardly even said sorry. They pretty much threw up their hands. Brian on the other hand said his were in storage until April. I guess he read my disappointed and agreed to get one out and ready for me for the day after next. Rented a bike for the week. Price was very competitive, bike was in great shape, and the inclusion of a basket and lock was very nice! Bike was already there when we showed up to our rental house. Super easy to reserve online. So why 4 stars? It wasn't picked up on the day I expected. We left it locked to a post and called after we left the next morning. Staff was friendly, helpful, and apologetic and said not to worry about it they would pick it up. Really a minor thing, but I just can't give out 5 stars because of it. Arrived to Manteo for a week of blissful disconnection from the everyday hustle and bustle when, after five minutes of unpacking, my bike decides to take a concrete nap on the drive side, thus knocking the rear derailleur out of whack and slightly bending the hanger. After all the unpacking dust settled, I searched high and low on the interwebs for local bike shops with solid ratings on mechanics. A few popped up in the searches but they were all peppered across the sound in-between Duck and Nags Head. Not exactly convenient to Manteo nor much in the way of useful knowledge in the reviews... thus why I'm posting this here. Here's the thing folks... any monkey with a credit card can buy some bike tools, tinker on bikes and call themselves a "mechanic". There is no minimum qualification for the title but there are a multitude of intricacies, nuances and details that only a seasoned and experienced true mechanic will recognize and have the ability to troubleshoot. When a cyclist finds a solid mechanic, he/she will likely follow that mechanic to the ends of the earth for adjustments and service beyond the shadetree abilities. While I consider myself more advanced than the average DIYer, I haven't invested the money in many of the specialty and single-purpose tools of the trade. I leave those to the pros that make a living with them... the craftsmen. Being that it was already 5pm and unlikely that I would find a bike shop open; I side-stepped the bike and went for a short run instead. Luckily, I decided to run along the main drag through Manteo and get a general idea of the town's character. About halfway into my run and at my turnaround point, I had to make a choice; either turn right and head into historic Manteo by the waterfront or do a 180 and head back the way I'd come. I opted for the turnaround and switched to the other side of the street. This would prove to be the best decision of the vacation. Not one block into the return leg did I pass the big blue building with some bikes out front and riders all gathered in front. Score! I whipped around and inquired to any employees when Brian introduced himself and informed me he'd be open at 9am the following morning. This was fate stepping in as I had been shouldering a load of ill-content since the bike had fallen over. Not long after 9am the following morning, I popped in, had a great conversation with Brian (shop owner/mechanic) and left the bike in his capable hands. He remarked it would take a couple of hours to work through his other stuff and I'd get a call when it was ready. This gave us ample opportunity to walk down to the historic waterfront, take in the sights, grab a spot of lunch and walk back. Right on the money at 11am, I received the call that the bike was ready to roll and picked it up without irreparable damage to my wallet. There are not many instances where I'm genuinely impressed by a business or situation but this was one of those rarities and I felt it necessary that Brian get some attention for his craft and business. He rents all manner of bikes, sells some very nice looking cruisers and hosts rides out of the shop when the weather is cooperating. I hope you'll take the time to visit Manteo Cyclery, speak with Brian and give him some business. I'm pleased to say I found his shop and will continue to return. read more

I dropped in without an appointment and Brian took my bike right in and had everything diagnosed and repaired in the time it took me to go grab some lunch and return. Great service and very helpful. Because of Brian, the owner, we had a fabulous experience exploring OBX via bicycle for 5 days! The bikes we rented were in perfect condition and appropriate for our experience level and the path type we would be choosing. When we asked for path suggestions, he provided a great map and pointed out several paths he thought we would enjoy. He was efficient throughout the whole rental process, choosing the right size bikes then making adjustments for our comfort. We rented fat bikes for the week. Manteo offered to deliver them to Corolla and pick them up at the end of the week for no extra charge. Bikes were in perfect, new condition (unlike virtually everything else that gets rented in OBX!) We had so much fun biking in the 4x4 area along the beach. Definitely would recommend them! read more

Do not... do NOT trust what the owner of this bike shop tells you. He told me he was going to sell his rental bikes off on October 1... which I confirmed three times before I left. I desperately needed a bike because the one I had got stolen. I then showed up right when he opened on October 1, and he had already sold them. So much for taking someone at their word. As much as I want to buy local... you'd be better off getting a bike from someone who's an ethical professional in another town... or get it from Amazon. Sheesh. read more

First time visitor since I was in the area. Brian has a great shop with nice bicycles of all types for rental. Also, very customer friendly, even though he knew I was not in for a rental or repair he spent time chatting with me like I was his best customer of the day. Very knowledgeable on the types of bikes as well as the equipment he has in his shop for repairs of anything from a bad tire to changing pedals or making brake repairs. Rented 2 beach cruisers for my husband and myself over the phone before our arrival. The gentleman I spoke with was courteous, and call s me back promptly when I had left a voicemail message. The bikes were delivered to our rental house when we arrived, and picked up shortly before we left as we had scheduled. The bikes appeared to be brand new, or were at least in excellent condition. The cost of each bike included a helmet, lock, and a bike basket, which most other companies did not include in their rentals, but for which they charged the same price. Best deal in the area for a bike rental in my opinion. Overall great experience. read more
