I was surprised by the comments. My husband and I felt the owner was extremely nice. Lucy, his dog was a sweetheart. He adjusted our seats on our bikes. Made sure everything was good with both of them and gave us tips on where to bike. Pretty straightforward guy. I was just on the outer banks 2 week's ago. The location has been closed for months, but the new owner is awesome. We had 12 bikes on our trip, and every one of them was serviced and we supported the home grown owner for the weekend! He was VERY appreciative, and VERY reasonable. We were in town for 4 days, directly across the street. Great service, great guy! He was an apprentice at the barn before the original owner died and took over the business to keep the legend alive! I HIGHLY recommend. I'll never go any where else for my bike repairs! EVER. read more

Bike Barn doesn't carry exactly the things I prefer, but they do carry acceptable substitutes and are very convenient to my office. They also helped us out with repairing the wheels on a stroller for only $10. If I need quick service or some decent supplies, they are my go-to spot on the Outer Banks. read more

Probably the worst service I have ever received at any store ever. The owner was standing bare chested in a pair of shorts when we arrived, barely acknowledged us, there was a plate of raw chicken (thawing?) on the counter and he had the most arrogant attitude regarding his bikes without realizing my brother is a bicycle mechanic and actually knows what he's talking about. Our short visit ended with him saying, "Don't waste a local's time, go back to Wings!" (nearby tourist surf shop) as we walked out the door. What a gem. The negative reviews of this bike shop are too kind. You would have to experience this first hand to believe what I am about to tell you. When I arrived, the door to the shop was locked with a note to knock on the door upstairs for help. When I knocked, a man jumped up off a sofa and asked what the hell do I want. I said I needed a small adjustment on my rear brake. When he unlocked the door to the shop, he grabbed my bike, put it up on his lift, and proceeded to tell me that my bike was messed up and needed a complete overhaul for $65.00. When I told him I disagreed and didn't want him to do it, he went baserk. Started cursing and yelling and basically threw me out of the shop. But before I was completely out the door he started spraying WD40 all over my bike. This man obviously is mentally unstable, and I would be concerned for my safety to go near him again. read more

Because the bike he wanted to rent my wife was too tall for her and we we asked if he could get her a smaller one out, he went off. I only gave one star because I had to. Worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. I took two bikes in to see about getting a tune up and wanted to charge me $250. I said only do one of the bikes because the other wasn't that bad. He got so defensive saying I need cash right now and I said my father in law (Whose Bike It is) will pay when he picks it up. He wasn't having that and turned his back to me and said "I'm done with you." If it was My bike I would have not let him have my business. Awsome shop, great stuff. The customer service on the other hand is pretty poor. I bought some 15$ oil for my chain and they tried to charge me 10 dollars to let me use their bike pump. I've been to a bunch of bike shops all around and have not purchased a thing and they were more than happy to let me use their pump. I never knew air was so expensive. read more

I don't even know where to start. This guy was so unbelievably rude. He was a total jerk to my husband and son. Son had a broken pedal. The price was too high, and when he decided not to get it fixed, the guy said he didn't care and he had better things to do anyhow. Then my husband was looking at helmets. He asked if they were ANSI certified. Guy said they were, but they weren't labeled. He topped it off by telling them to get out because he had better things to do with his time, literally shooing them out the door, then yelling "idiots!" after them as they were getting in the car. He was the only guy there) said he'd explain the different kinds as long as we were sure we'd make it worth his while so he could see the light at the end of the tunnel. While I am sure the owner is knowledgeable about bicycles and has the ability to do good work, what follows is an exact summary of my experience. Draw your own conclusions, but I will certainly never go back there again. The chain wheel on my bicycle broke while on vacation. I found Bike Barn via Internet searching. I called, explained my problem and was encouraged to bring the bike in. I brought the bike in, the owner immediately put the bike on his bench and started taking off the pedal, chain, etc. He did explain that this was a store bought bike, used non standard parts and that many people choose to throw them away rather fixing them. I said I would get it fixed, if the price wasn't a large percentage of the actual cost of the bike. He pulled a new chain wheel off his wall and said he would need to replace the entire 3 piece chain wheel because the store bought bike was riveted together. I was told the cost the repair the bike would be $80 ($60 in parts and $20 for labor.) The owner insisted that I pay cash in full before leaving the bike (which at this point was already in pieces.) I asked him "Are you sure you can fix this?" "Yes I can," was the reply. I left the bike, paid cash and went off to hang out with my family at Jockey's Ridge. I called when done to see if I can pick up the bike. The response was "You need to come in so I can talk to you." I said, "Please let me know if the bike is ready." I then got a 10 minute rambling response on how another piece was not standard and that no supplier in the country has it, and that he might be able to overnight from Seattle, etc. etc. for another substantial cost. At this point I said "Forget it, I would like the bike and my money returned." I then was rudely told that I would only get $40 of the $80 for his work and that the bike will be outside. I argued that 1) I was assured he could fix the bike 2) had he been upfront with a $40 labor cost regardless of whether or not the bike was fixed (which was $20 more than the paid for labor rate for the repair) I likely would not have utilized his services, 3) the original labor rate was $20, and 4) he already started taking my bicycle apart before explaining costs, etc. I got a nasty, unprofessional response that he doesn't work for free and he spent a lot of the time on the bike and he was owed that money. Common courtesy clearly wasn't going to work, so I went to store and after more argument got $60 thrown at me and got a sarcastically shouted "Have a Nice Day! Goodbye!" He mangled what was left of the chain wheel and pedal arm. I left in worst condition and out $20. Had he been upfront and said there was a $20 diagnostic charge, etc. I would have been agreeable, but the entire experience was awful from start to finish. Generally, I have a live and let live attitude, but this experience was so negative, for the first time in my life I felt compelled to publicly warn others. read more

Fixed my out-of-true wheel in minutes, fixed a brake issue I knew about and didn't mention, charged a reasonable price, was friendly and professional - and he knew we were from out of town. He also noticed that I had struggled with getting our bikes on our bike rack, and being a smart businessman, (low-pressure) sold us an adapter that definitely helped with the rack. Rude doesn't even begin to explain this guy nor does he seem to even own a shirt or shoes. Since I was staying near by I walked over to ask about prices. The open sign was on but the sigh on the door said to go upstairs, where he lives, if the door was locked so I do. He was on the phone but final hung up and came down stairs. He explained that his bikes were high end and rented for $80 a week and if we wanted a cheap bike we should go down the street. Most places advertise $40 for thre week. We were only there for a few days so we ask if he were willing to give a better price for two days, first he said $30 and when we acted like that was too much he went to $40. This was a horrible experience I had today. I brought in a stroller I had purchased and the hand brake did not work. The owner told me I bought a piece of junk. He took a cable off and trimmed it down, sprayed some wd40 in a few places and kept saying to us I hope you brought cash. I got NO new any Part, just some wd40 and he charged me 25$ CASH ONLY...Good thing my friend had some cash....if the man had not been so scary I would have argued with him and I believe he needs to be reported to the better business bureau. I brought 10 bikes to him to fix, told him what I wanted and this is my budget ... set agreed on the price and left... he calls me said they are done but when i get there he had made the decision to go with his more expensive inner tubes and better chains which ended up blowing my budget his prices are twice as much as the other cycle shop on the beach road in KDH. He probably has to do that cause his business is horrible. DO NOT GO HERE... go to Kill Devil Hills Cycle shop tons better and the owner there is super helpful . Take it from a real local. Businesses like the Bike Barn are why Amazon does so well. I went in to the Bike Barn to get a threaded headset, two piece cranks, some chain, and I was hoping to window shop for pedals and a front cog. I'm pimping out a bike for my wife. The first thing I asked for was the headset. I couldn't understand what the attendant was asking me (turns out it was "threaded or non") because the radio in the shop was so loud. When I asked him repeat himself he acted as if I was an idiot for not knowing what he said. He took out the headset (there was only one choice) and he immediately raised the price from $24 to $29; the price was handwritten on the box and he took a pen and changed the 4 to a 9. I immediately decided that I wasn't going to buy anything else, that I would take the overpriced headset and never come back. I figured I would get my $5 back in free advice instead: I asked the attendant if he knew any tricks for keeping the headset from corroding. This is a huge problem at the beach due to the salt air. I was expecting either a "no" or possibly his suggesting me to apply carnauba wax. Instead the guy looked at me like I had three heads. He didn't know what I was talking about. He told me that he sells aluminum bikes which don't corrode and he said that the headset that he wanted to sell me would not corrode because it was painted. First of all, aluminum does corrode, it's simply catalyzed by salt instead of oxygen and the air here is full of salt. I can only think of three reasons that the owner of a bike shop that is 300 yards from the ocean would think that aluminum does not corrode and that paint will prevent corrosion: either he's spoiled and has never had to deal with anything as distasteful as the corrosion suffered by the lower classes, he thinks I'm an idiot, or he's the idiot. He was wearing a crepe-like circa 1990 HIC t-shirt with his man-boobs hanging out of the tears in the chest-- I think I know which one it is. I live in KDH. I've been repairing bikes for 30 years. The first time I went to the Bike Barn was in 1992 for a chain ring and I was treated like an idiot then too. I only came back today because everybody deserves a second chance. As it turns out, like many Outer Banks businesses the Bike Barn is only interested in making a quick, one-time sale to tourists who are either ignorant or have no other choice. read more

Wow, if I could only give zero stars. I have never entered a place of business and been treated with such contempt and disrespect. Yes, we are from out of town, but I am certain that our US dollars have just as much value as the US dollars of the local folks. We should not have been encouraged to go look at the "trinkets at Wings" instead of checking out a local business that specializes in an activity that we are actually interested in. However, when we were asked quite rudely "Do you guys even ride?" (the answer to that question is a polite "Yes we do. One of us rides avidly."), the decision NOT to spend any money was made without anyone in our party saying a word. However, in most places of business that I have ever entered, I was permitted to browse their inventory whether I chose to make a purchase or not. But instead of continuing our pleasant (can you sense the dripping sarcasm?) trip around the store, the proprietor ordered a pizza for himself and then rudely made us leave so he could go pick it up. When we return to Nags Head next summer, we won't be visiting Bike Barn. Surely Kitty Hawk Cycle Company treats their potential customers with the dignity and respect that this joke of a bike shop fails to deliver. read more

I agree with the previous rater, in that there is no way this business deserves one star! I called prior visiting this shop to explain that I needed two tubes for the tires in my second hand bike. The guy asked if I was local and said he couldn't quote me a price, but that he had been a successful business in the Outer Banks for years. I took my bike in and the shop owner immediately told me it was too much bike for me, and showed me the type of bike he felt I should be riding, even sending me out to test ride one of the bikes from his showroom. He fixed the tubes in my bike tires, and sent me out to test it. While I did so, he screamed out that I wasn't shifting it correctly. When I got off the bike, even though my husband and I had informed him that I couldn't hear him while I was riding, he continued to rant about how I shifted the bike. It was a terrible experience, and then he overcharged for the two tubes ($56) and 20 minutes of his time. Overall, he was a bully and the rudest businessperson I have ever met. Do not subject yourself to service or even worse, a purchase at this shop. And yes, Merideth was correct, he was bare chested and his shorts were falling down, showing more than I cared to see. Finally, he only accepts cash; I wonder why? In retrospect, we shouldn't have paid him what he charged. Stay away from this business! read more

Zero stars! I can definitely confirm what everyone else is saying.... Do not go into this bike shop unless you are a glutton for punishment. My seat broke while I was at the beach for a week, and I went to Bike Barn because it was closest to our house. I walk in, and the person running the shop is on the phone. He does not acknowledge me, so I stand there patiently. I'm standing there for several minutes before he looks at me and sees that I have a broken seat in my hand, and he just points to a corner of the shop and says 'seats are over there'. I look at the seats, but I have no idea what kind of seat I need, so I go back to stand patiently waiting for help while he is talking on the phone. He is discussing his pay with the person over the phone, and is saying how he needs more money to make a living.... Very unprofessional, especially considering I have been in his shop for ten minutes at that point and would like to spend money if only he could pause his phone conversation to help me. After fifteen minutes of waiting, I looked up the next closest bike shop, and found Outer Banks Bicycle. As much as I hated to interrupt his phone conversation, I told the guy at Bike Barn that I was going to go somewhere where they would actually help me, and walked out. Outer Banks Bicycle was incredibly helpful, and I had a great seat at a great price (and they even attached it for me) in about five minutes. Save yourself the trouble with Bike Barn, and just go directly to Outer Banks Bicycle. read more
