While in the parking lot the guy working inside was actually walking to his car and greeted me. It was only when he came back in that I realized he worked at Skate Supply, but he was super-nice nonetheless. He asked me if I was there for the raffle (he obviously made an educated guess since I've never been there before) and he took my contact info. He asked if I was interested in buying a t-shirt they were selling to promote the shoe's release and, because he was so cool about it, I said, "Yes," and pre-ordered. I think I got a second raffle entry by buying the shirt, but it looked cool, was a reasonable price and I'd be supporting a local shop. We also talked about the shoe in question (Travis Scott x Nike SB Dunk Low "Cactus Jack") and joked a bit about its release policy. It's not a big as Carnival but it has this laid back, relaxed vibe that I always remembered about skate shops. If you don't know what I'm talking about then check out the movie mid90's. They said it should have been there by Tuesday but I hadn't heard anything so I FB msgd them and they got back To me said they'd contact me as soon as it comes. Well they contacted me again to apologize for not not being here on time and offered to get a different board in place of it until it arrives so my son would at least have something and we could just swap out when his actual Deck came in. Long review short I'm still waiting but the fact they took time out to msg me and ask if I wanted a replacement for the time being was awesome customer service. Can't wait to get my sons deck.

The Pit has now become a long-time fixture in Kill Devil Hills. I remember when it opened. In the…read morebeginning it was just a club that would let kids under 21 so they had somewhere to go listen to bands, play games, and hang out. Then they expanded to the surf shop and built a separate building. Now they have Boardriders Grill. In the main building you'll find the "hang out" part. Downstairs on the ground floor is a stage and venue for bands and parties. On the main floor, there's a dining area and small bar. On the top floor there's some video games, pool, and chairs to chill in. Sunday is Euronight with electro/house music spinning and Thursday is Mug Night. At The Pit out back the surf shop keeps expanding so I can't even keep track of all that's offered. I will tell you that they keep up to date with all the rad stuff locals and surfers need to keep up with the island image and life. They offer board rentals, surf lessons, lots of cool stuff. One thing that's really cool is that they're home to "Skim City" which is a sick skimboarding brand. My brother used to be sponsored by them and my family was never short on encounteres with the Skim Crew! A boardsport lifestyle comes as naturally as going barefoot on the beach and The Pit acknowledges that. The Boardriders Grill has come a long way to have a following of its own. $1 tacos from 4 to 6pm and all day on Tuesdays always draw a crowd! I don't know how else to describe it but how they do -- a surf-inspired menu. My Mom loves their fish tacos and my friends and I can barely handle their burritos! Spice and gargantuan size with fresh fixin's. I love that you can eat inside or out on the front deck and the service is friendly and fast. You never know you'll run into at The Pit. Steve Pauls and Ben Sproul have done a pretty good job at keeping it up for locals and visitors alike though. Stop in and hang out...you'll have a good time.

We were super nice and not asking for anything over the top but felt very unwelcome and would have bought much more if the staff was warm and helpful . I like the vibe inside and we were immediately greeted by a guy on the front porch cleaning up a board. They sell several used boards of all kinds and have a back room with tons of sizes and options. They also have surf gear, sandals, skateboards, stickers, local homemade SPF, board wax, some jewelry, you name it. They give beginner surf lessons and also have classes.
