Checked out many shops while visiting last week and Outer Banks Boarding Co was my favorite, had the local vibe to it, and the folks there were super helpful, friendly, knowledgeable, and provided a pleasant experience so I picked up some trucks some grip tape cleaner and a sticker for the board, and likely gonna make some online orders in the near future! I had been thinking about buying a skateboard for about 2 years now. I shopped around but was on the fence because I'm 37 and the older you get the harder it is to recover from injuries. Also I was questioning my commitment and confidence. I knew I liked Penny Boards and Arbor. Evan was the associate who helped me. He was knowledgeable, patient and assured me that I could take on this new hobby. I went with a more expensive board than what I had anticipated spending because he talked about the importance of quality craftsmanship and performance. Great place with a fantastic selection. I'm a skater so I wish the skateboard section was a bit larger, but overall a great shop... primarily geared towards surfers but skate section is pretty good, seems they're continuously adding to the skate section so I'll be a definite return customer! The staff is always knowledgeable and extremely polite. I've frequented almost all of the board shops in town and although this one's a bit smaller the selection is always great. read more

Awful Customer Service and Company I purchased on their website and no where on the site does it say they do not take returns on sale items or any boards in general. At no point during the ordering process or even in the confirmation emails was I notified of this "policy". I know that many places do have this policy and it is clearly stated on their site and usually again during the ordering process. I was confident making an online purchase from this company because they did not have that same policy anywhere on their site. All it says is that they will process most returns within 30 days of the return shipment but when I attempted to make a return, shipping at my own expense as stated on the site, they said it's against their policy to accept returns on those items. I asked "how can that be a policy and yet it is not noted to the customer anywhere?" He said "that's just what it is, there's nothing I can do for you." Not even remotely helpful. No concern for product satisfaction. They take the money and run. read more

They seduce you by talking about how they support local activities and by friendly they are. But, then reality sets in. They have lousy business practices and the customer is NOT always right. My biggest complaint: They will not accept returns even 5 minutes after you bought an item. Even if you had not left the store and made a mistake -- no returns. Are we all that perfect? If you are perfect and never give into sales pressure, then sure, shop here. But, if you are a normal person who respects good service, consider this a reminder that there are lots of surf shops on OBX. read more

Probably one of the nicer shops in town. Good selection on everything (surf, skate, lifestyle). They also had a decent sale section with I appreciated, along with my bank account. Everyone was attentive and helpful and their online store ships for free with no sales tax. boom. read more

This is the BEST surf shop in the OBX. 2 reasons. 1. They sponsor a lot of local up and coming surfers and events and 2. (more importantly) Pro Surfer Jessie Hines's hot wife works here! The sale section is really nice, super cheap. A couple years ago I bought my first (well only) surf board here. It was used and I used it plenty when I lived here. So my friends wanted to check out the Christmas tree lot next to OBBC. Well, we get there and my friends little girl has to use the restroom as well as myself. I had planned on making a purchase after we used the restroom. I come inside I greet the man behind the counter. I say hello, do you have a restroom please? Cashier: THAT's the first thing you say to me when you walk in here?! Me: I have a little girl that needs to use the restroom. Another employee shows us where it is and was pleasant as I thanked him. To avoid a confrontation I decide to turn the other cheek and just walk out. Then he screams BYE as I'm trying to control myself esp because i have my friends kid with me. IF you're life is that miserable....... You're in the wrong profession. ALSO if you have a problem with kids using ur restroom put up a sign that says you're a hateful old man with spite in his heart. God bless you to the chrochety old man working the register at OBBC. BOYCOTT OBBC for a horrible attitude!!! I could've spent an unknown amount at ur store. Now I'll make sure NO ONE comes in. read more

The Outer Banks Boarding Company is great. Stroll into their large, stand alone building and you'll quickly see that they have equal space for skating, surfing, and a women's department. The owner is a dedicated surfer as are many of the employees, and that means if you are a serious surfer or skater you can count on them to help. Its right across the street from the YMCA and its huge bowl so if you skate, make this your one-stop-shop. read more

I wanted to write a review for Farmdog Surf School, who is owned by the owner of OBBC, but they don't have a yelp site. Robert Farmer who owns both is an awesome awesome guy and deserves 5 stars for both ventures. I was out in the Outer Banks for a surf camp for cancer survivors and his school taught us to surf - we had 12 campers and around 5 teachers out there so the ratio of teacher to student was pretty high - which was great because I was really anxious. The surf instructors were so amazing - Robert, Chris, Aaron, Lindsay, Rachel, and a couple others I can't recall their names (sorry!). They were like wave whisperers teaching us the lay of the ocean, how to read the water, helping us catch waves (and I caught a few - but unfortunately couldn't stand up that trip - but since being back in California have done so). And then we took a field trip to the surf shop OBBC and I bought a bunch of cute clothes. The staff was nice and professional and the shop was clean and had tons of variety. As much as I support local Outer Banks businesses, I have found that the employees are very judgmental in helping costumers. If you do not fit the body type and look of a "real" surfer or skateboarder, your service will be limited and unhelpful. I thought it was just me, until I went in to buy a product was looked down upon and actually had the employee tell me I "wasn't serious enough" on a purchase. I then had a friend who fit the stereotype go in and ask the same questions to the same person and was helped immediately. As a locally owned and operated business, I understand that they have the right to sell to whomever they chose. HOWEVER, I will NOT be supporting or putting MY hard earned money into a business who judges based on appearance alone. read more

I came in to OBBC the wend (day before) Thanksgiving. I wanted to take the moment to get some christmas shopping done my son was out of town for that evening only. It was 6pm on that wend night. I came in and was the only person in there. Im not sure of the names of these guys, but they were both awesome. I was working on black friday so i wouldnt be able to make that sale. I was in there for probably 45 min, I got everything i needed for my little buddy, penny board, skim board, hats, etc. As i was checking out the main guy said...." Im going to go ahead and give you our black friday deals.....needless to say I was suprised and stoked!!I literally felt like I just received my very own christmas miracle!! Terrible online store and customer service. Called the store beforehand to confirm if they had a specific surfboard in stock, which they did confirm they had. Paid for it, then after 3 days I got a refund without any indication of why. Had to call the company where they told me they did not have it in stock.. Hope they get to manage their inventory and at least send a message to an awaiting customer as a common courtesy. read more
