But now that we're older, we decided it was time to make life easier. Enter Farmdog Beach Services. I found them through online reviews and reached out with a few questions. The customer service was impressive--quick, friendly, and helpful. One concern I had was the rainy weather forecast. They assured me I wouldn't be charged for days when setup wasn't possible. That peace of mind sealed the deal. We arrived on Saturday, and by Sunday morning our tent and chairs were already perfectly set up. This continued like clockwork every day of our trip. Even though we had one bad weather day, the overall service was so good I wouldn't even mind if we get charged for it. A special shoutout to Steve, the gentleman who set up our tent each day. This 53 year old grandma got up and relaxed into being up on the board and riding the waves in! We had another very athletic 27 year old Jiu Jitsu young woman who also learned from scratch. We had James-O and Tory and Julien and they were all great! James-O especially really took us under his wing. Very encouraging with perfect instruction. They taught us how to choose waves. It was SUPER helpful for the beginners that they would give our boards a push to get us up to the right speed at the right time. I cannot recommend them enough!

The Pit has now become a long-time fixture in Kill Devil Hills. I remember when it opened. In the…read morebeginning it was just a club that would let kids under 21 so they had somewhere to go listen to bands, play games, and hang out. Then they expanded to the surf shop and built a separate building. Now they have Boardriders Grill. In the main building you'll find the "hang out" part. Downstairs on the ground floor is a stage and venue for bands and parties. On the main floor, there's a dining area and small bar. On the top floor there's some video games, pool, and chairs to chill in. Sunday is Euronight with electro/house music spinning and Thursday is Mug Night. At The Pit out back the surf shop keeps expanding so I can't even keep track of all that's offered. I will tell you that they keep up to date with all the rad stuff locals and surfers need to keep up with the island image and life. They offer board rentals, surf lessons, lots of cool stuff. One thing that's really cool is that they're home to "Skim City" which is a sick skimboarding brand. My brother used to be sponsored by them and my family was never short on encounteres with the Skim Crew! A boardsport lifestyle comes as naturally as going barefoot on the beach and The Pit acknowledges that. The Boardriders Grill has come a long way to have a following of its own. $1 tacos from 4 to 6pm and all day on Tuesdays always draw a crowd! I don't know how else to describe it but how they do -- a surf-inspired menu. My Mom loves their fish tacos and my friends and I can barely handle their burritos! Spice and gargantuan size with fresh fixin's. I love that you can eat inside or out on the front deck and the service is friendly and fast. You never know you'll run into at The Pit. Steve Pauls and Ben Sproul have done a pretty good job at keeping it up for locals and visitors alike though. Stop in and hang out...you'll have a good time.

I called the nags head location to ask if they would take them back. The manager, Jake, explained that he would have to see them. That is just fine, so I brought them to him with all the tags and the receipt then when we grab another pair to exchange them with, the Grommet on the new pair was cracked. Jake handled it like a pro and gave us the benefit of the doubt and let us return the shorts so, I ended up spending $200 more, because he was so gracious to us. We really liked her approach of sharing her knowledge on all aspects including how the waves are formed, understanding impacting dynamics like wind, and the approach she took to ease our kids into it for the first time. So cool and a bit surprising to see the two older ones actually catching some waves by the end of their first lesson.
