You can drive on the beach with an Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) permit but the area in front of that lifeguard stand is restricted.

Bottom Line: Great beach on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore with a nice bath house and accessible overlook. Aside from the lovely beach this federally managed strip of the Outer Banks also has foot rinse nozzles, a bath house, outdoor showers, changing rooms, a water fountain with a bottle filling station and a large parking lot. Coquina Beach is just south of Nags Head and is located within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Of course the real draw to this beach is the beach itself - a wide and soft sanded beach with beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and even some views of the Bodie Island Lighthouse. The beach is a great place to watch shore birds and to go shelling for all sorts of shells including the beach's namesake - the coquina. Aside from the lovely beach this federally managed strip of the Outer Banks also has foot rinse nozzles, a bath house, outdoor showers, changing rooms, a water fountain with a bottle filling station and a large parking lot. One of the great features of this beach is a wheelchair accessible ramp to a lovely overlook. During the summer months there is a lifeguard on duty daily. There is a ramp where 4x4 vehicles can drive on the beach with an Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) permit. Driving on the beach in the vicinity of the lifeguard stand is not allowed and there are signs indicating that perimeter. Overall, a really nice beach to which admission is prepaid through federal tax dollars.

Coquina Beach, in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, is considered by locals to be the prettiest beach in the Outer Banks. Tourist attractions range anywhere from on-shore fishing to the wild horses that roam on the beach to people of all ages enjoying a vacation. Coquina beach is also known as a "gay hot" spot not a gay beach but it has gay hot spots. http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/North_America/USA/South_East/North_Carolina/ It is listed a surf spot on occasion but usually it doesn't have high enough waves as they average one foot. When I was there there were no waves at all. But it is worth checking out for it's seclusion and beauty.

    Good surf

Hands down the best beach in OBX. It's a hidden gem. The ambience is worth the drive every time. There is a clean bath house. Normally there's always two lifeguards on duty. We love coming here.

On a Saturday and it wasn't crowded.

It's a very clean beach. Pets allowed, plenty of space (parking can be a little crowded) and very family friendly. I had a great time!

Harvey Public Sound Access, aka Harvey Sound Access or Harvey Soundside Park, is one of those places that you debate yelping because you kinda want to keep it a secret. But, Harvey Public Sound Access is a public park and information about it is already in the public domain so here we go . . . As the name implies, this narrow public space is located on the sound at Mile Post 16 and gives locals and tourists alike access to the sound. There is a launch here for small waterctaft like kayaks, jet skis, kite boards and windsurfing whatchamagigs. For those trailering their water toys there are several long parking spaces to accommodate that set up. If watersports isn't your thing this is a terrific spot for spectating! There are several picnic tables under a pavilion offering spectacular views of all the action on the sound. Unless you are wanting to reserve the park for a private event, picnic tables are first come, first served. It's not uncommon to see locals relaxing here while on their break from work. Amenities at the park includes the pavilion, bathrooms and a water fountain. I think there might be a grill and power outlet too. If you're looking for a place to swim in the sound this isn't it because there's not a beach per se. (For sound side swimming I recommend the beach on the south side of Jockey's Ridge State Park.) Overall, this is a wonderfully serene and entertaining spot in Nags Head.

You can take the direct approach and just walk up the stairs if you want to. However, for the handicapped, there is no easy way of getting down the stairs to the hot sandy beach...most wheelchairs won't do well in soft sand. For those who did get into the ocean or are just covered in sweat, there is a shower at the bottom of the stairs. There is also a Portable Pottie too. This is if you can make it from the beach to the toilet. Hopefully it's not occupied. Your other two options are back to the place you're staying...or an aqua dump off in the ocean...its less messy...but... Anyhow, I have passed this parking lot/beach access many times but never thought about it. Guess when you are stay at another person's house, you notice things you might not have noticed before. Ths time is now 16:31 (4:31pm) and today has been a lazy day. I did go on the ocean, but I had to do it alone. Tomorrow maybe a different story. From the house I am staying at, I can see the comings and goings of family's visiting or leaving the beach.
