In the…read morebeginning it was just a club that would let kids under 21 so they had somewhere to go listen to bands, play games, and hang out. Then they expanded to the surf shop and built a separate building. Now they have Boardriders Grill. In the main building you'll find the "hang out" part. Downstairs on the ground floor is a stage and venue for bands and parties. On the main floor, there's a dining area and small bar. On the top floor there's some video games, pool, and chairs to chill in. Sunday is Euronight with electro/house music spinning and Thursday is Mug Night. At The Pit out back the surf shop keeps expanding so I can't even keep track of all that's offered. I will tell you that they keep up to date with all the rad stuff locals and surfers need to keep up with the island image and life. They offer board rentals, surf lessons, lots of cool stuff. One thing that's really cool is that they're home to "Skim City" which is a sick skimboarding brand. My brother used to be sponsored by them and my family was never short on encounteres with the Skim Crew! A boardsport lifestyle comes as naturally as going barefoot on the beach and The Pit acknowledges that. The Boardriders Grill has come a long way to have a following of its own. $1 tacos from 4 to 6pm and all day on Tuesdays always draw a crowd! I don't know how else to describe it but how they do -- a surf-inspired menu. My Mom loves their fish tacos and my friends and I can barely handle their burritos! Spice and gargantuan size with fresh fixin's. I love that you can eat inside or out on the front deck and the service is friendly and fast. You never know you'll run into at The Pit. Steve Pauls and Ben Sproul have done a pretty good job at keeping it up for locals and visitors alike though. Stop in and hang out...you'll have a good time.

Our instructor Megan was absolutely fantastic and we couldn't have asked for a better coach for our three kids. We really liked her approach of sharing her knowledge on all aspects including how the waves are formed, understanding impacting dynamics like wind, and the approach she took to ease our kids into it for the first time. So cool and a bit surprising to see the two older ones actually catching some waves by the end of their first lesson. We would highly recommend Outer Surf and Megan as an instructor to anyone wanting to learn to surf and have a fun time doing so. Our kids were ages 15, 14 and 7. Fantastic experience!

She is an excellent swimmer (on swim team) and likes to waterski and sail--she was excited for surfing. When we arrived, the two instructors were extremely disaffected. They barely introduced themselves, didn't ask the names of the participants or any other info. There were 8 people ranging from 9-young adult. There were two instructors. After about a 5 min on-land lesson, they went out. The boards for the little kids were the same size as the adults. No one helped my daughter or the other two younger kids get out. Once out, my daughter was able to catch a wave or two for a second and I think she really liked it, but sadly battling back out past the breaking waves she took a surfboard to the face and got knocked down pretty hard. She got back up, but neither instructor noticed any of it. The other kids also struggled; by one hour in of the 90 minute lesson all three of your kids under 12 had quit. They brought their boards in. The instructor's either didn't notice or didn't care. I think for $90 per person, the lesson should have been a way to share the fundamentals and get kids excited about surfing. My child instead said she felt scared by it, didn't know how to get out from under the board at one point, and that the instructors were mean. So, that was kind of the opposite of what I'd hoped. If you say you can teach kids, please hire people who like children. Staff it so that young children get enough attention that they don't have a negative experience. Maybe greet paying customers either a smile or a hello or a greeting. Altogether this was a really bad experience. I also wrote to the email listed on the website and heard no response.

I was nervous about the 1:4 ratio, but since they were on the younger end, it was mostly a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio for them. I had visions of them being pulled under a wave and being traumatized by the ocean forever, and it's true they did get hit by the board a few times, but the instructors were so positive that the kids didn't mind much, kind of like how falling is a fact of life when you're learning to walk (but we don't tell kids not to learn to walk). I learned a thing or two too - instead of reaching to a bad wipeout with "Are you ok??", I can try saying "Sick wipeout dude!" :) The one thing I would note is to pay attention to the tides - I think the camps are better at low tide.
