I ordered a beach umbrella to be delivered to VA beach. They were able to deliver quickly, which was extra, along with picking it up when I was done. The only bad part was that I had to meet the person to get the umbrella, due to limited parking. I had to put the umbrella in by myself. It had an anchor, but I couldn't get it to hook into the sand. The umbrella kept falling down. Other sunbathers tried also to no avail. I didn't use it for most of the time. I suggest having a driver and someone to hop out to put the umbrella up for the customer. read more

What a great local spot! Not only do they offer lessons, but they actually have a small retail store with boards and accessories. Their staff was quick to greet and assist us. We were able to spend some time chatting with them to find the right products before heading out to the water. I would love to try their lessons one day, in the meantime this is definitely where I will be referring out of town guests looking for lessons or a local shop to pick up a few essentials! read more

I had two wonderful lessons -- one with Cameron and one with Joey. The two instructors could not have been more different, and I enjoyed both equally! Cam is very professional, positive and gave me good pointers, based on what I was doing -- my posture, movement, etc. Joey is a font of knowledge and experience re. surfing and the ocean. He taught me a lot about the landscape of becoming a surfer -- the community dynamics, ocean safety, reading waves. Both were great lessons, and I couldn't recommend the experience more highly. read more

I attended a training session with a group of veterans. I'm an older guy, so I frankly expected a bunch of young people treating me like a 6-year-old and talking down to me. I was so very wrong. The instructors were upbeat and friendly. They were very patient and as long as you kept trying, they kept trying to help you. I'm sure it got pretty boring for them, but they don't show it. It was a very positive experience, and I had a great time, even though I didn't do very well. If you're looking for lessons, check these folks out. read more

We booked a stand up paddle boarding private lesson and tour through Tony and VB surf. Mark was our guide and he was AMAZING! He gave us a quick lesson then we set out through Owl Creek where Mark talked to us through the entire experience. We even came across a bird in distress and Mark called local fish and wildlife to make sure someone would come out and care for the bird who was caught in fishing line. He even followed up with us later that day to tell us how it went! A top notch guy who really cared equally about showing us a good time and taking care of the wildlife and environment. I'm a fairly avid surfer that was in town and needed to rent a board since there was surf to be had. Staff was professional (female, forgot name sorry) yet chill which I look for I a board shop since they often can come with a egotistical vibe. I'm smaller than your average surfer (5'5" @135lbs) so I have trouble finding smaller rental boards. The selection of PU/Epoxy boards is pretty small but they had this little black quad hybrid (5'7 maybe) that was really fun to ride even in small 3ft less than ideal surf but would probably be more fun better surf. I went down to Outer Banks a day later and wish I kept the board with me since the boards available to me there we're way too big. I'll be using them in the future trips when there is surf. I hope this helps if there is surf in your forests. read more

We had a 2 hr surf session with Logan (or as we called him, Logan Mamoa, as he was the most helpful Aquaman), towards the end of summer. We were a party of 2 which was perfect because the 3rd person cancelled. Logan was very patient with our 2 novice city father and daughter team. It was a 1pm session and the weather was perfect. Very warm and so was the water. The prep session was thorough including explaining the types of waves, things to watch for etc. After practicing "paddle, ready, pop-up", they ventured out to the surf. Logan helped pull them out and watched for a good swell, gave them a good push towards the shore and if they fell off, it was time to try again! I would recommend VB Surf Sessions and Logan. Had a fun surf session with the owner Tony. He went over the basics as well as gave me lessons on surf etiquete, wave formations, how weather affects surfing conditions and a little bit of history. It was great getting all of that background and explanation before we started on the actual practical. I was apparently a very fast learner, so we were able to spend the majority of the private lesson on the water. As soon as I was out there I Immediately started catching waves and was literally surfing by the end of the lesson. I interacted with two of the employees, Ashley (Who ended up helping me out towards the end and she was extremely gregarious, outgoing, and funny) and Alex (Who I spoke with several times and was extremely. Helpful and friendly) who were both very nice. Another employee Ben gave me some advice on boards and in the end I ended up going with Tony's advice and buying an 8 foot Odysea board. They were all very welcoming and nobody made me feel like a "Kook" so I just wanted to say Mahalo nui loa to everyone there. Take it from this Haole, anyone looking for surfing lessons should certainly consider them as one of their choices because it was quite a good experience. read more

I took my first stand up paddling lesson (8/17) with Tony and it was awesome. I was nervous about falling in but he showed us the proper form, either as a fun workout or a leisure activity. I enjoyed myself and will be back again. EDIT: I did go back, the very next day (8/18) for a surf lesson! I felt like a pro afterwards. I don't care if I looked as good. I have paddled out on a board many times, living in Hawaii, but usually too chicken to do more than thrash about eating sand and swallowing the ocean. My instructor was encouraging and professional to every member of our group, a 10 year old girl, two 35-40 year old women, and myself. By the end we were catching waves, popping up and laughing a lot. Thanks! read more

My wife surprised me for Fathers Day with a beginners standup paddle lesson for our family of six. (4 teens) Chris was our guide and he was excellent in taking the time to explain every step and was very personable. We could tell he enjoys his job very much which made our day that much more enjoyable. Our two hours was lots of fun and made for a great Fathers Day. On a side note - Chris had lots of great tips to include where we found some amazing fish tacos ! My wife says MAHALO. Also she would like to note that the booking process was very easy, they were super friendly and worked with our schedule for a last minute Father's Day trip. I am 36 years old and thought I was too old to start learning a new hobby, but the experience with VB Surf Sessions was amazing. Not only did I have a very successful day (I'm going back to rent/buy a board) it was a lot of fun too. The instructors are knowledgeable and professional. They know how to help anybody have a successful day of surfing, even if it's your first time. It is obvious that they all share a deep passion for surfing and truly want to share it with others. On top of that, they were all very energetic and fun to learn with. It was like having your own cheering squad right there with you! Whatever your age, this is the place to go. If I could give VB Surf Sessions more then a 5 star I so would because everyone in there deserve it. Customer service was phenomenal and my family and I had an amazing time. My day started off by trying to rent kayaks from another shop and did not realize they closed early being the fact they did not have their hours posted online like the other places did. Then I called another place and come to find out they were located further out then the address stated. How frustrating!!! Right when I was about to give up I decided to call VB Surf Sessions which stated they had kayaks and didn't close until 9 pm and sure enough a lovely lady by the name of Kassidy was beyond helpful over the phone and in person. Both her and Tony were EXTREMELY helpful and explained everything from A to Z with no hidden agenda. The next person who was amazing and helpful was Brycen who delivered our kayaks and even picked them up. Kayaking in itself is super fun but when you receive such wonderful customer service like I did today from Kassidy, Tony and Brycen, it just makes your experience MUCH better. I'm a total beginner to surfing, and while I certainly can't say my skills are great, my experience with VB Surf Sessions was. Tony gave a great on-the-beach explanation of how the waves work and how to be safe. After practicing popping up on the sand, we headed into the water. Now, I'm from Chicago, where the lake has practically no waves to speak of. I admit the size of the surf was intimidating to me, though I'm sure people who are used to being in the ocean would consider them tame! The gist of my experience was this: I was a bit of a wuss and got increasingly nervous after getting tumbled a few times. Tony was encouraging but didn't pressure me at all when I expressed my fears. Instead, he gave me really constructive tips about how to get used to the waves (boogie boarding!) that left me with a clear next step. It's that understanding and instruction that made my otherwise-disappointing attempts into something positive. I'm hoping to get more comfortable in the water and give it another try in the future! read more

I took a lesson along with my daughter - 15, and her friend, 17 and son, 18. Wide range of ages and no one felt out of place as far as I can tell. Classes were not as large and unwieldy as I have seen some of the low cost surf schools put up on the beach, which meant a lot of one-on-one time if you want it...Great team of instructors, led by Seth Brody, a former pro surfer who is down to earth and an encouraging instructor. Bonus points if you get to work with Christian or his wife Sonya - VAbeach natives and long time surfers as well. In all a great vibe and time well spent with a great group of folks. read more

I am in the military and just got into VA about 3 days ago from Hawaii (Surfing every single day for the past two years). All my things, including my surfboards, are being shipped out to Alaska for my next job. After three long days of being sober from the salt water, I had enough and drove down to VA beach. Not knowing any surf shops, i walked into a shop and this surf shop recommended VB Surf Sessions. I went with the recommendation and couldn't be more satisfied. Great Service!!! I mean they drive to where you are and drop off a surfboard with a leash. This is an amazing concept! I can go to the beach, scope out the surf, and if it is decent, call these guys up. I highly recommend this company to anybody who is visiting and needs a surfboard and I am sure they are great with lessons too read more
