The Pit has now become a long-time fixture in Kill Devil Hills. I remember when it opened. In the beginning it was just a club that would let kids under 21 so they had somewhere to go listen to bands, play games, and hang out. Then they expanded to the surf shop and built a separate building. Now they have Boardriders Grill. In the main building you'll find the "hang out" part. Downstairs on the ground floor is a stage and venue for bands and parties. On the main floor, there's a dining area and small bar. On the top floor there's some video games, pool, and chairs to chill in. Sunday is Euronight with electro/house music spinning and Thursday is Mug Night. At The Pit out back the surf shop keeps expanding so I can't even keep track of all that's offered. I will tell you that they keep up to date with all the rad stuff locals and surfers need to keep up with the island image and life. They offer board rentals, surf lessons, lots of cool stuff. One thing that's really cool is that they're home to "Skim City" which is a sick skimboarding brand. My brother used to be sponsored by them and my family was never short on encounteres with the Skim Crew! A boardsport lifestyle comes as naturally as going barefoot on the beach and The Pit acknowledges that. The Boardriders Grill has come a long way to have a following of its own. $1 tacos from 4 to 6pm and all day on Tuesdays always draw a crowd! I don't know how else to describe it but how they do -- a surf-inspired menu. My Mom loves their fish tacos and my friends and I can barely handle their burritos! Spice and gargantuan size with fresh fixin's. I love that you can eat inside or out on the front deck and the service is friendly and fast. You never know you'll run into at The Pit. Steve Pauls and Ben Sproul have done a pretty good job at keeping it up for locals and visitors alike though. Stop in and hang out...you'll have a good time. read more

I love this place! The new location, just in front of the old location, is so sweet! Missy, the owner, is wonderful and always so helpful in a non-annoying selling you things way. There is always a huge selection of new and used boards and extra goodies for the beach! read more

Cute, kinda overpriced Surf Shop but while there I got some sweet deals on stuff like Oakley's and whatnot. The restaurant and bar attached are nice too. Really a touristy spot but definitely a must go. read more

What a Deal! Highly recommend visiting the Pit. Had 2 teenage boys who wanted to take surf lessons on vacation. The pit gave them an almost 2 hr lesson just the 2 of them with Dre. The boys thought he was the coolest & not just because he's from New Zealand and has a great accent. He was patient and very encouraging. The icing on the cake was the boys got to keep the boards almost a full 36 hrs to practice. Hours of fun watching them, did I mention one of them is from Finland (no waves there) but he now can say he can surf! All of this for a reasonable price which is hard to find in OBX! read more

If you wanna a good choice to choose from and you you were already kicked out of whalebone or OBBC for asking too many questions, the pit is the place to come. Daughter Saved money all year to buy a skim board. Bought one for $417 from The Pit Surf shop. (an Exile Skimboard). Went straight to beach. Within 1 hour, my daughter stood board up in the sand. The end broke off. Took back to surf shop. They offered to charge me for a repair but would not take responsibility for the board. Buyers BeWare! read more

We visited the surf shop to rent a skim board. They were all booked out. The owner talked to my teenagers and worked with them on taking a board from stock and renting it. Awesome dude. They took my trade in hurricane stick for a nice fat fun board and picked the perfect board for me to paddle out on! Great prices, great products, overall a wonderful experience! This is a cheap, delicious place to eat! I went for the $1 tacos and my travel partner went for an enormous wrap! This thing was huge!! The food was really good too, as was the service. Taco Tuesday! Most tacos are $1 (fish are $3) and are chock full of toppings. Definitely order the salsa, sour cream and guacamole. $3 bottles of all Latin beers the same night.
