Hubs purchased a chair from here and it was not the right kind. We took it back & they gladly let us exchange it. We ended up buying some OBX tshirts, sweatshirts & few other articles of clothing, as well as 4 hermit crabs (I know, right!!!). My son & his friend each got 2 hermit crabs (dang teenagers, lol) & all the necessities to keep them happy & alive. The gentleman that helped us was simply wonderful! He was such a nice man & he was super helpful & very informative on how to take care of them. The store had everything you needed for the crabs and there was a nice selection to choose from. They have a vide variety of clothes for the whole family from sweats to swimsuits to Hawaiian shirts. They also have a nice assortment of hats & shades as well as beach gear, fishing gear & souvenirs. The cashier was also wonderful. She was so warm & friendly and she gave us even more pointers for the hermit crabs. They better stay alive now!!! Nice, clean store with a large selection in stock. During our week stay, we ended up coming here four times, lol. read more

Large, clean, and well-stocked store. Kites are slightly cheaper here than at Sunsation and much cheaper than at Kitty Hawk Kites, but the quality isn't comparable. The souvenirs and clothing selection is about the same as at Sunsation and similar area stores. This store has sparklers and party snappers for dirt cheap. Overall, worth stopping into if you have time to go from souvenir shop to souvenir shop (they're all so close to each other). read more

Perfectly located in Nagshead is this souvenir shop. They have all your beach needs, clothing, souvenirs, home decor and more. Unlike wings, Ben Franklin is VERY reasonable in pricing ! Also the sizes go up to 3XL .. at wings if you want a T-shirt or hoodie they will not have that size but BEN FRANKLIN WILL! Bait and tackle also available at this location ! It's a one stop shop ! All members of the family will enjoy this place ! This large store offers a pleasant shopping experience even with social distancing regulations. Staff was nice and helpful. This was a surprise of a beach shop! Not your typical Wings of surf shoppe which is why we stopped in. Oh man I wish we weren't on the motorcycle haha so many cute things! Walked out with a couple of shirts and a sticker but would definitely make a point to stop in when driving a car to pick up some of the beach/tiki themed merch. This is a adorable souvenir shop! I noticed quite of bit of their stuff was inexpensive. The outside of the building is gorgeous, we actually were here whilst they were re-painting so they must change it up every year. They have a HUGE selection of clothing,which to be honest isn't really my thing but if you're looking for some items to take home this would be a good place to check out. I got a couple adorable shot glasses, a pearl mug and a coffee cup to give to my sisters back home. I noticed some of the reviews aren't great,but it's a SOUVENIR SHOP you guys. If I would have known then what I know now I would not have said I would never come back here. But I was not able to avoid this place this time around I was just a passenger in the car and had no say whether or not we were stopping here. I literally did not want to buy anything in here and basically just waited until my family was done picking over items. I stood in one spot for a really long time staring at one of those sand/water novelties where you flip it and the sand falls to form a mountain. I flipped that thing so many times and got more frustrated with it with each flip. Damned bubbles wouldn't do anything I wanted them to do. Like I said in my prior review no signage, sparse feeling/look, and I don't remember much else since I just kind of spaced out when I was in there. Huge souvenir shop, tons of junk that you don't need, but interesting nonetheless. Their clothes were actually surprising; I never buy clothes outside of a few stores, but they had a cute sundress I couldn't pass up. I wore it and washed it, and it's still perfect quality, no shrinking or fading. My boyfriend got a few shirts and he was very happy with his purchases. He went back the next day to exchange one for a bigger size and they didn't give him any trouble. If you pick up the OBX coupon booklet, there's a coupon for a free OBX sticker with $10+ purchase. They give you two options, one black and white and one tiedye. Nice little free item to stick on your bumper or laptop. Employees were very friendly and wearing their masks. If you are looking for cheap kitchy beach stuff, this is your place. Random beach signs with fun, supposedly witty sayings, things half filled with sand that say "Outer Banks," cheap T-shirts and $6 hats -- Ben Franklin has it all. Also an excellent place for cheap boogie boards, koozies and the like. Don't get me wrong -- there are lots of people looking for that type of stuff when they are on vacation. So I'm not bashing the store at all. I'm just saying that this is the type of stuff you will find here. If you are in search of that stuff, I would highly recommend shopping here. It is not as nice as other Ben Franklin stores I've visited, but it's not in bad shape either. Just right down the middle and a good emporium of cheap touristy stuff. read more

This place is awesome for cheap souvenirs. Having always gone to beaches with boardwalks, I was pretty lost at the Outer Banks. Everything was on the highway/road...but thank God for Ben Franklin. It's the holy grail for those beach souvenirs. Half their store is filled with clothes- clothes for your baby, husband, grandma, etc. The rest of the store is made of a conglomeration of the the following items: sunscreen, sunglasses, plastic lighthouses, model ships, magnets, bracelets, and even shells made from China. Yeah, it's 100% tourist stuff. Service was friendly though. (Hell, everyone's nice down there!) They had the least expensive stuff in the area. I recommend going here- it feels less sleazy than going to one of the gazillion Wings in the area. I have to confess though, I only stopped here because it was called Ben Franklin. As a person from Philly, I had to see why, but meh... no connection. read more

I wanted a cheap coozie and I got a cheap coozie! Just what I was looking for! I was also fairly surprised at the low prices in this place, I got my kid a really cool little white sailor hat for $3, and when I picked it up at first, I was gonna swear they would want $9.99 or some outrageous sticker shock... but no, only $3... My 4 stars here is really based on prices, this place could charge an arm and a leg, but they're keeping it low. Good place for flip flops, visor hats, that tochocknick for your moms, and some floaties. Plus, who doesn't love that sign out front. read more

Frankly, I have learned over time to stay out of tourist trap, cheap beach souvenir spots. But, on a girls' trip with a good friends who wanted souvenirs, we found this place and I was surprised how much I loved it. It seems to be locally owned and operated, not like the Pacific/Wings stores you find every 3 blocks at pretty much all NC beach towns. The store was HUGE; it almost reminded me of the old beach Maxways that have all but disappeared in Eastern NC. I ended up buying a Captain's hat for my dad and a Skipper hat for my son to wear on the boat, as well as a glow in the dark pirate tee that my son has asked to wear once a week since. All in all, that's a pretty good haul for around $10. Oh, and there is a decent selection of kids books, esp. Beach themed books and activity books. So if you need some rainy day activities while vacationing, I would recommend a stop. read more

Went to buy hermit crabs for my lovely friend, unfortunately was disappointed by the employees more than the selection of shells. Almost makes me feel bad for the crabs. We went to the crabs cage and opened it and grabbed a few crabs out and placed them in the habitat we were buying...as there was no one around them and no sign saying not to. Employee William walks out and says we weren't supposed to take them out, and explains that they aren't social creatures, no problem with that except for the fact that there is no sign saying not to and he gave no further instruction on what to do now that we "weren't allowed to touch them." So we waited...and waited...and waited. Until another employee says that we are allowed to take them out...no real solution, just a awkward experience for some hermit crabs. Place is good, just wanted to share my experience in case anyone decides to touch the hermit crabs (just don't do it around William). read more

I used to be a fan of Ben Franklin, but the quality of the clothing is awful! If you stay away from the clothing and stick to the kitschy souvenirs you'll fare better. My daughter bought a nice hoodie with "Outer Banks" emblazoned across the front. It look really nice until we washed it the first time and all the lettering peeled off. It was then we realized the lettering was NOT stitched on, but was attached with fabric tape. My wife dutifully hand-stitched the lettering back on the hoodie, but no thanks to Ben Franklin. read more

We used to vacation at Outer Banks many years ago when the kids were small. We always made it a point to stop at Ben Franklin to browse and pick up some souvenirs. We shopped all the other places, but you could find most everything "kitchy" at Ben Franklin at much less cost. Everything clothing-wise we've ever bought there has lasted as well as having bought it anywhere else. When we visited there 2 years ago, after not having been to Outer Banks for about 10 years, I was very surprised to see that they were still in business and in the same place, same store. I usually love these cheap stores, but this one was pretty sad. One thing I was looking for was a swim shirt for my husband... they had like 2. And half the store is clothing! The clothing section was really sad. I did purchase postcards and water-proof sunscreen and a captain's hat. Pretty much the same junk sold at Wings and Reef but twice the price and a bit more selection. The store is laid out nicer than the other discount retailers and seems to be cleaner, but they use the same foreign exchange student workers which makes me think your money is best spent elsewhere..they even sell the same hermit crabs and cages as the other stores. An old-timey sort of store to pick up beach odds and ends. Prices seemed reasonable. Sort of expected a better selection of other general merchandise, as this was basically all tourist stuff ('Ben Franklin' used to be a much larger chain similar to Woolworth/Dollar General etc., but there no longer seems to be any sort of connection, although their sign looks like it dates from the 60's.
