After spending a week in Hatteras with my family, my two teenage boys said that they wanted to go to an "authentic" surf shop, not a touristy souvenir store like a Wings. As we headed north on route 12, we noticed a random sign that read "surf shop" and decided to turn around and check it out. Cavalier's is the real deal folks. We were greated by the nicest folk and treated to a one of a kind surf shop experience. Great selection of authentic one-of-a-kind brand apparel and merchandise. The owner was eager to show pictures of the shop from the 60's and 70's, and tell the stories of flooding and restoration. They even offered some great local dining recommendations based on my appetite. Great people and great experience. You have to check it out if your in the Nags Head area! read more

He allowed us to pay cash and look at anything in the store. Such sweet people, and a perfect store. Why go here and pay full price for junk when you can go to Wings and pay half price for junk. The staff acted as if we were in their way, and didn't want to wait on us. If you don't want to wait on tourist don't open up a surf shop in a tourist town. The manager was more worried about people walking across the street into an abandoned house beach entry. While I was checking out he rushed out the door to tell a family to not cut across the dunes. So I guess his job title is manager by day, batman by night. Thank that man for his service! read more

Let's face it, no one thinks, "Ooo, honey, let's go to the Outer Banks for a surf trip." Ok, no body from the West Coast at least. But sometimes the closest thing to a surfable ocean from DC is in fact mid-summer fun at Nags Head... and thankfully for me and my entourage, there was Cavalier Surf Shop to the rescue. I have to give respect where respect is due: Cavalier really is an old skool surf shop. A small shack across the street from the water, Cavalier had everything I needed to cure my mid-Atlantic surfing blues. For such a tiny shack, they sure do pack it in... loads of gear, new and used boards, t shirts and wax. My girl friend and I rented a 9 and 10'0" for $20 bucks each a day and unlike the other shops we checked out, Cavalier was renting the epoxy pop out Bic boards which I consider a much better rental over the foamie Doyle's. No shortage of groms to provide suggestions on where to paddle out... "I'm not working tomorrow so if you want to surf just call the shop"... in what I imagine is the closest thing to Aloha on the Banks. Having grown up a surf shop rat myself, I have to say Cavalier sure does it right on the right coast. read more

Excellent experience, highly recommended. We went there right before the shop closed and it was a great experience for my family. We met the mother, father and son running the business and they never rushed us even though they were closing. The son helped us pick out boogie boards for my kids and even installed the leash since we didn't have tools with us to do it ourselves. We looked at a few other places and he was by far the most knowledgeable about them. Our family had a really good conversation with the entire family, even talking cars with the father who is a real car guy. One of the best experiences we have had on our vacation down here over the past few years. read more

A Real Surf shop -- and a Real, Rare Gem! I was surf shopping today for stickers for my grown son who has been collecting for 25+ years. Best assortment of stickers ever! The rest of the store was also packed with Everything you'd ever need or want in a great surf shop. Family owned. Mom and son were very knowledgeable about stickers and I bought about 25. Well worth it and excellent prices. You can tell this place has real experience and has been around a long time. It's one of the coolest shops I've ever visited. I live 6 hours away but after my son sees all the stickers I'm sure we'll be back soon so he can check out everything else in the store, too. It was the weirdest experience I've ever had for a surf lesson - he said nothing, gave us no tips, advice or guidance - I'm not kidding - he did absolutely NOTHING. What a great find in the Outer Banks! Last week my husband and kids took a much-anticipated vacation and came upon this little shop by complete surprise! Now, there are surf shops and souvenir shops everywhere down here, but this is like a little gem right on the beach road. It's nothing special to look at outside, no neon lights or huge signs, but inside is a whole lot of anything you need beach wise. This place has everything, and I do mean everything! There were surfboards, boogie boards, chairs, clothes, skateboards, wetsuits, etc. Yes, it's cramped and difficult to assess all there is to see, but Ryan and Austin catered to every single question we had and helped us narrow down our selection to fit each child, and the biggest kid of all (my husband). I can't get over the customer service! It's a family-run business, but they make you feel like you are part of theirs! I can't speak any fonder of my memories of the beach than my experience at this shop. read more
