LaLa is the absolute WORST! It was after 10pm and you're unable to place over the phone orders; thus I came here to place an order in person. I was notified that it'll take 20 minutes. Considering that the restaurant is the size Of your basic NYC apt and it was very warm, I stepped outside for the 20 minutes. 20 minutes later, I asked the same waitress if the order is ready and she goes "Oo I thought you didn't want the order since you left." Im not sure where LaLa expected me to stand and wait. There was no space at the bar and the place was packed. If this food wasn't for someone else I would've left. Piss poor customer service. As someone of Caribbean descent, I was pleasantly surprised at the hospitality of the staff of this Carib restaurant - very friendly. I also appreciated the fact that there is a "sit-down friendly" Caribbean establishment in this area of Brooklyn. The decor is simple and I enjoyed the pillows on the bench seating. Veggie Roti: Chock full of veggies, spicy, nice seasoning; came with a fruit chutney ( I assume mango which unfortunately I'm allergic to, but I had so much food I didn't need it.) I would have liked more roti skins tho! Plantains: Sweet & greasy just how I like em! Coconut Bailey: Taste like the Haitian Kremas I grew up on! Terrific! Banana Bread and Ice Cream: The essence of cinnamon was the first thing that hit me! As one who loves to bake I appreciated that - in love! My friend ordered the Stew Chicken dish which she loved! I tasted her rice and peas which was good. She'll be sure to review shortly! Overall, we had a great experience. Different members of the staff checked on us throughout the night. Do not let the unassuming facade of the building fool you. This place is absolutely awesome as far as food & drink go. After ice skating in Prospect Park, my friends and I were looking for a place to eat when we stumbled upon this place. Thank goodness we did. Before I continue, please note that our group included Americans, West Indians, and Hispanic folk. None of them had any complaints on the food or drink. We walked in on a Saturday night with no reservations unfortunately, so a 30 minute wait was not unexpected. There isn't much room to wait in the front of the restaurant so we kind of squeezed into the bar area. The hostess and bartenders were so genuinely nice. They wore all black with Mango Seed T-shirts and I liked that. It made them easy to spot. Drinks were made and delivered quickly while I watched basketball on the flat screens behind the bar (I think I'm coming back during NFL season to see what's up). When our table was ready, we were escorted towards the back of the restaurant where a portion of the backyard of the restaurant was covered and heated. We didn't mind that, but be aware that if someone steps out to the uncovered portion of the backyard, through the rear door, a significant portion of heat is lost through that door. Not a big deal, but if you're cold blooded, don't sit back there during the cold weather months. Anyways, back to the food... Jerk chicken, Jerk Salmon... Jerk anything was GREAT! We ordered wings for the table and they were amazing. The pairings of all the dishes (e.g. Maduros, Rigatoni etc.) were all spot on. I was with seasoned vets as far as West Indian food goes and none had any serious complaints (The Jamaican in my crew would've liked the jerk seasoning to be spicier/hotter but I feel that it was just the right amount of heat to satisfy West Indian and non-West Indian tastes). Bottom Line: Go! Whenever you get the chance, go eat. Just make sure to make a reservation and if you're driving, get there early, because the street parking is a little bit tough out there. read more

Our waiters were friendly and sweet and the service was good. I didn't love the drinks. Both the margaritas and sangria tasted somewhat bland and weak. For food, the jerk salmon and chicken dishes were both good, although the salmon was overcooked. However, the sweet plantains that came with both dishes were truly the best I've ever had. A bit on the small side, but this spot has some character. To start, the drinks here are ridiculously strong. I love me some sorrel, so I immediately ordered the "90 Proof Sorrel". It was basically sorrel with a 'high' amount of liquor and it was awesome. Most homemade sorrels already have liquor, so if you're into that get the sorrel drink. I settled on the fried chicken + biscuit (southern gravy, corn salad). This was a good meal: the chicken was super tender and really juicy, the large biscuits were soft/buttery, and the gravy with corn salad was a weird combo that worked surprisingly well. This was a flipping huge portion to boot, it worked for me. My friend got the braised oxtail which he enjoyed. We ordered some dessert to finish: strawberry cheesecake and flan. The cheesecake was great but the flan was "off". I'm no flan expert but I am certain it wasn't traditional flan. The consistency was more akin to sweet potato pie. My spunky self was on a late night hunt for a sexy cocktail and scrumptious bar bites. While all the other establishments were either closed or had limited option on the eve of 4th of July, Mango Seed offered something that lured me into the establishment. At first, I wondered why the bar was scarce. Then I realized that the garden, the DJ was pumping good tunes, and everyone was in a celebratory mood. While at the bar, the bartender was pleasant.He was a little delayed, but I realized that he was taking the drink orders from garden. The 100 Proof Sorrel had a heck of a KICK- good and strong! I also ordered my usual Whiskey sour. G the Bartender sure didn't use cheap bourbon! To lay the foundation, I ordered fish tacos that were served on wooden choppings trays. They were absolutely delicious with the pickled cabbage to cut the fresh seafood taste and smell. I wanted to order the jerk wings, but the kitchen had closed at 10:30 pm. This is my second visit to Mangoseed for a Book club meeting. So it was a group of 10 of us on a Sunday around 11am.  Once our whole party arrived, we were seated promptly in the outdoor seating area in the back that could comfortably fit our whole party. The service was on point. My prior visit my main setback was the service and this visit they basically shut me up. The waiter we had was visible but not hovering. Given the bog group size, our order didn't take forever to come out and for the most part the orders came out in back to back batches. Most of us partaked in the unlimited Mimosas special so our carafes stayed full for the majority of the visit. I don't think there was a instance where we had to run anyone down for a refill because the waitress was very observant of our table. The food was good as always. This time around I had the jerk chicken and waffles and I was sad when I was done. The waffles were cooked nicely, the chicken was the bomb. The place is very small so I can see how it can easily get crowded none the less we didn't have that problem when we went. Came with friends on a Sunday for brunch. Super long wait for our party of 4. We were disappointed that we all ordered dishes with grits and were told there were only enough grits for 2...only for others around us who came after us to be served grits. When i asked our waiter about this he shrugged and said "They made more". Smh. Speaking of service, it is slow but the wait staff are personable and try to accommodate your needs as much as possible. Maybe it was my fault for not wanting to wait to be seated in the back so we were seated in the front of the restaurant with DJ. Good music, but it was nearly impossible to talk to my friend that I was with. Also I don't know if we just looked like we weren't hungry but it took a really long time for our waitress to take our order. I've been to Mangoseed on a number of occasion and I can complain about them. Then service is great, the atmosphere is lively and the food is always on point. With that said, I'm no too happy about the outcome of my takeout order which was done as a walk-in. I ordered 3 items, get all the way home, open my bag only to notice that an entire order was missing. I truly hope that when I show up there tomorrow, I am able to get the credit for the missing item plus the tax. Update: currently at Mangoseed enjoying the great atmosphere. The server from last night was there and was just as sweet as she was last night. Though it was not her fault. She was very apologetic. I've been going to Mangoseed for brunch for the past 3-4 years. And to this day it's once of my favorite brunch spots in Brooklyn. This review is long overdue! I always opt for one of 3 entrees: jerk chicken and waffle, jerk salmon and waffle, or the Ox & Parmesan Grits. If I HAD to pick a favorite it would be the Ox & Grits. Always on point and extremely flavorful and fulfilling. A great meal with $15 added on for unlimited mimosas is always a brunch win. They also have a DJ who plays R&B, some hip hop and reggae which sets the tone. In the summertime I suggest sitting in the greenhouse-like back area to soak up a little sun while enjoying your meal. One important thing to note is the Unlimited mimosa time frame. They STRICTLY end serving the unlimited mimosas at 2:30. Meaning, if you sit down at 2pm you will be limited to 30 mins mimosas time (not 1.5hrs). So make sure you arrive early as this place does get packed! read more

I was really excited to try this place but unfortunately I didn't like it. Maybe I ordered wrong or maybe I came on the wrong day, I don't know. I came here with my dad tonight and we got the fried chicken, the burger, and a side of plaintains. First of all, the prices surprised me. $22 for fried chicken and French fries? It was a big portion but still.... also, it was extreeeemely hot; I could barely eat it. Not spicy, hot. The French fries were soggy, too. The chicken was just pretty flavorless. What a gem in the Flatbush area! MangoSeed is a cozy restaurant filled with great food selections, although few, and fantastic drinks! My friend and I came right at opening during the week and were the first party seated. We had a very polite waitress that suggested some order options specify to my preferences well as my friend's preferences. We started off with the Crooklyn and Rum Punch - both are definitely a must try! I had the Rum Punch and it was sweet, lined with tropical flavors, and had me a bit tipsy (I'm a lightweight, don't judge me!). I really wanted some fish tacos, but the waitress said the order only contained 2 tacos and they weren't so big - for $11? I'll save my coins. My friend and I both ordered the Jerk chicken dish and it was so savory, spicy, and perfectly paired with plantains and rice (wish there was a bit more rice, but perhaps that's just me being greedy). Went here today for Sunday brunch with my cousins; there was a line but the wait was only about 15 minutes so no harm no foul. The space is long and narrow like most New York restaurants but the atmosphere was warm and comfortable and there was DJ playing reggae and dancehall music that could be heard throughout. In terms of the food, there's good news and there's bad news. The bad news is, they got my order wrong. The good news is -- I didn't mind one bit! I ordered the Everything Toast and asked for no salmon pastrami. When my food arrived, it was a sandwich (which based on the name was surprising but welcome -- less messy lol) and was served with a generous portion of mixed greens with a little bit of dressing. Once I started eating, I fell in LOVE. The food was flavorful, filling, and fresh and it wasn't until I was half way done that I even realized the pastrami was included. Nevertheless I kept eating and really enjoyed it. Also tried some jerk chicken and was really impressed with the seasoning. Overall, I had a great experience but Had to knock off a point for the ordering mistake (could've been dangerous for some people). Nevertheless, I'd love to come back.
