I first tried out Mango Thai at their Twin Cities location and then Rochester. I absolutely LOVE the food. I would give it 5 stars. However, I gave this location 4 stars because their takeout wait is AWFUL. They give you a time to pick it up and I've had to wait an additional 20-60min every time. My friend worked there and he said it's because they put the customers dining in first, but when I went last time, only a couple of people were there and my takeout was ready 40min after they told me it would be. Absolutely terrible. So, in the end, give yourself plenty of time or dine in and you won't be disappointed! I highly recommend the Massaman Curry and Cashew Chicken main dishes and their Mango Spring Rolls and Thai Beef Jerky appetizers. Also, if you're lucky and it's the right season, the Mango Sticky Rice dessert. (NOTE: 5 months later and the takeout has only gone downhill time-wise. Still takes forever.) read more

Even their name is hard to notice. Inside it is one of the best interiors I have seen in a resturant. They have obviously spent a lot of money decorating the interior. Excellent evening out. Almost turned around and walked out the door as we spent fifteen minutes in the doorway before anyone acknowledged that we had walked in. It was very strange - there were open tables all around yet it was if the waitstaff was making a concerted effort to avoid eye contact with any of the incoming guests. Two additional couples did leave after waiting for ~10min. We were finally led to a table and from that point forward, the service was excellent. Our waiter was courteous, knowledgeable, and provided excellent recommendations. We started off with the "Crying Tiger," a grilled steak served with a spicy dry chili sauce, which was very tasty (not on the menu, so I'm not sure whether this is always available). As a spice fiend, I proceeded to order the green curry, which was listed to be amongst their spiciest dishes. It was amongst the best Thai curries I've had - but could have been spicier. I did ask the waiter how to go about asking for things to be ramped up a bit in the spice arena, and he said to specify that you would like a meal to be cooked "Thai Hot." If that didn't do it for you, ask for something to be cooked "Chai Hot" --- Chai being the name of one of the cooks. The prices aren't outrageous - around $13 for an excellent curry with rice. We were disappointed with the lack of a visible host/hostess upon arrival, but will return on the basis of the quality of the food. read more

This restaurant seems to be going for a "trendy" and "upscale" vibe, and certainly succeeds as far as decor and ambiance go - this is a fun place to sit for a meal. Unfortunately, they also charge the correspondingly "upscale" prices for their food which, regrettably, just doesn't match up. The first time I visited I just tried the pad thai, which, as other reviewers have mentioned, just didn't taste right and almost seemed like it had ketchup as an ingredient. Not cool! Chalking all this up to a fluke of a bad first experience, I returned again today and had the chicken and shrimp pad thai and an order of the green curry with sticky rice. Once again, the pad thai was a tasteless clump of noodle. At this point I'm convinced that the cooks aren't using the tamarind-fish sauce-sugar-pepper sauce base that anyone who cooks Pad Thai should be using. It is missing all the great flavor that the sauce should give it, and it didn't even have a hint of spicy. And despite being "chicken and shrimp," I had two shrimps in my dish. What gives guys?! On the other hand, the green curry was freakin' delicious. Perfect balance of sweet and spicy, and on par with some of the best curries I've had. Love me some pad Thai! So when my colleague suggested we celebrate the end of a long week here, I was definitely in! We only had to wait about 10 mins for a table for 6 on a Friday night, which didn't seem too bad. Very nicely decorated interior, much more upscale than I was anticipating from the exterior. The upscale factor is definitely reflected on the menu prices. I wasn't too concerned, as I figured the dishes would reflect those prices....unfortunately they didn't. Don't get me wrong, my chicken and shrimp pad Thai was delicious, but it was the smaller portion of pad Thai I've seen and it only had one small shrimp in it! For $13 I shouldn't have left still hungry. The service wasn't the greatest either, we sat with empty water glasses from before we ordered to after receiving our meals when we finally asked for refills. read more

Located very near Mayo Clinic, this is one of the few non-American food places within walking distance. It's a cozy little Thai restaurant that may not be the best for very large parties. There is a romantic ambiance and several vegetarian options. I had the shrimp and chicken pad thai. It was alright, nothing special about it, to be honest. Chicken was a bit dry and portions were not as large as I expected from what I heard from others. I am giving 4-stars for just one reason: the time it took for our order to get to our table on a Tuesday evening (albeit a busy Tuesday evening). This is a fancy Thai fusion restaurant that I and my husband tried. We ordered Avocada Crab meat roll starters. I also ordered a Lychee Martini. Kudos to the restaurant for making it to perfection. It was yummeh. The main dishes were very well done and put together as well. While the spicy beef fried rice wasn't really spicy for me, it still tasted good. My husband was very happy with his duck dish. The only downside was that the food portions were very generous and we couldn't try their desserts. read more

A little bit shocked how bad the carry out attempt went tonight. Attempted to put an order in tonight for carry out. They were busy. Their instructions were to call back in one hour in order to find them at a less busy time. Very disappointed with the carry out order process tonight. We have ordered carry out before with no issue at that time. Tonight was a completely different story. When I asked if I would have to wait that long for my food if I were to be at the restaurant I receive no response and then they hung up on me. Additionally, the one and only time that we did eat there they did in fact get all of our order wrong. Sadly the food is good but come on. Not entirely impressed with our meal. Both me and my wife's dishes tasted quite bland for being Thai food. I would describe the price as expensive for the quality and type of meal you are getting, but the atmosphere and old downtown building is where I'm sure they are racking the price up. We lived in the cities for a couple years and have experienced some of our favorite spots up there, such as Supatras in St Paul. Good thai food. Was my favorite for most part of my 3 years stay Rochester. Love the ambience, a bit upscale, also due to its location. Good service and helpful and courteous staff. Love the Thai Basil Fried rice along with the Panang, Red and Green curries which I have tried a million times there. My favorite desert is the Mango sticky rice, reminds me of a dish back home in Mumbai. A couple of times have had complaints about the food being too spicy than asked or too salty than necessary, which forces me to take one star down. We've only been twice; once on a Saturday night and once on a Friday so maybe they are better during the week... but the first time, it took us 20+ minutes for them to run our card (and we were sitting at the bar). The 2nd time was a slightly better experience (we made reservations), though they were clearly overwhelmed by the patron to wait staff ratio. Asian cuisine is heavily complimented with rice, a significant amount portion of rice. Yet, to my bewilderment, very little of rice was packed with my entree. Was in Rochester from Florida for a conference. It was 16 degrees outside and wanted something walking distance from the DoubleTree that had spicy food to warm me up. Found this place using Yelp. Ordered the Tom Yum soup--they only have an atomic sized bowel & the cashew chicken entree. The soup was advertised as spicy but really just had a light kick. It was much more of a tomato base than I was used to. I got the seafood version but the protein component was skimpy. The chicken dish was descent. This place. I would give them 5 stars for the food, but EVERY time I've either dined in the restaurant or take out, the organization is terrible. The Tom Kha Chicken soup is probably one of the best things I've ever tasted. Tonight's pick-up (called in 60 minutes before I wanted to arrive in anticipation of it taking 45 minutes for the food to be made) and was told it's going to be another 30 minutes because of kitchen/ordering problems. It's easy for customers to see that the actual serving staff is doing their best and end up getting the brunt of customer complaints, but it's the kitchen & disorganization of ownership that hasn't gotten a handle on how to run a successful restaurant and carry-out service. Customer service should be a top priority and changes need to be made b/c Mango Thai is now becoming known for horrible service and not for the outstanding food. read more

Came here for lunch over my thanksgiving break with a friend. I used to LOVE Sushi Itto which used to be in this spot, so Mango Thai had a lot to live up to. While it was definitely pricey, the food was GREAT, the atmosphere was lovely, and the service was spectacular. I had the seafood pad Thai and my friend had the vegetarian pad Thai. We were both really happy with the spice level, the flavorings, presentation, and portions. It filled both of us up comfortably (though the portions were much smaller than Pho Thai which is on broadway), I thought mine had a decent amount of seafood (and it wasn't all imitation crab), and very tasteful. Not overly spicy, not overly peanut-y, just perfect. Definitely heading back with the family next time I'm home! read more

This place takes a spin on traditional Thai. While the menu is fairly limited it still manages to cover enough ground to satisfy. As the waiter says "it's not Minnesota nice" on the heat levels. I ordered the beef Chili mint - "hot" and was sweating the whole way through...loved it! "Thai hot" may be too much for even me, a My wife got the salmon special "medium". She loved the flavor but the fish was severely overcooked. It was bad enough to where we actually complained. To their credit they did offer to send us out a new piece but we refused not wanting to wait for it. Even with the dry salmon, my wife says she'd love to go back. I hope I'm with her! read more
