In Rochester for Mayo Clinic and had a memorable meal that lifted the spirits of my wife and me. Started with chicken satay with a superb peanut sauce. My wife had the sea bass with a curry sauce and I had the walleye with red chili sauce. Both dishes were beautifully presented and wonderful. We have been fans of Thai food for 40 years or so and this compared favorably with the best ever. Also was served by Edin who was gracious and perfectly attentive. Firstly, this review might sound like a rant but my experience at this place was not what I was expecting. The food looked good, so good in fact that I even took a picture of it, but that was about the only right thing that happened tonight at dinner. I ordered a Tofu Pad Kew Maw noodles, and half way through the meal I realized that along with huge chunks of Tofu it also had chicken in it. I'm a vegetarian by choice and have never had meat, it took me some time to realize that the texture of "tofu" was not quiet right. I asked my server about it, who was also confused. He assured me that he put in my order right. I still insisted he asks the chef and take my plate along. He politely did so. He came back and told me that it was indeed chicken and that the chef didn't know he was supposed to make it vegetarian. What part of Tofu Noodle doesn't the chef understand, It doesn't say Chicken Noodles does it? Anyway after all this when we got the check, guess what they still had the dish on it. Nice chill place to get some good Thai food. Had the chicken and shrimp Pahd Thai with medium spice. Noodles were perfect, shrimp had good bite to it and the chicken was good too. Only a couple shrimp but good amount of chicken. Ended up being spicier than I expected so I will be going with mild next time. My date had Pad Kee Mow (spelling?) She had Thai for the first time and said it was excellent. As far as the beer selection goes I think 8 types are more than enough. There are over 20 types of wine. I've been to this restaurant twice. Ordered the same pad kee mow dish both times (once with beef and once with tofu). The first time, without a reservation on a Saturday night, the customer service was fine and the food was great! However, the second time was terrible and I will not be returning to this restaurant! I made a reservation the day before and upon getting to the restaurant on a Thursday night, none of the servers came up to ask me about a table or my reservation. Once I caught the attention of one of them, I was informed that they didn't have a table and it would be a several minute wait. After 45 minutes...a table opened up and was given to a group who came in behind us without a reservation!! When we asked what was going on, we were very rudely told that there was a miscommunication and nothing could be done. At this point it was very late to go to a different restaurant so we stayed and ended up cramming five people at a four person table. Out of the five orders, three of them were much hotter than the 'mild' we requested, and the servers were not very responsive to this issue. Saw this new Thai place on Monday and decided to try it out a day later. It gives off the feeling of "up-scale" Thai food, which is very atypical; however, it was in a way that was not overdone. We ordered Duck Curry and Pad See Eew. The duck curry was a little on the sweet side with its abundance of lychee and pineapple, but it was not bad. The pad see eew has smaller portion that what I'm used to seeing and is extremely hot. I had a hard time finishing it. I have been twice to this restaurant. It's been ok, but very pricey. The portions are kind of small, the ambience was nice, and they have a really neat sink in the women's restroom...sorry guys...you just have a boring sink in yours. The Tom Kha was a little too coconut-ty and chile pasted for me. I was hoping for a more powerful flavor. I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Beware when taking out. My husband and I both ordered the panang curry. The online menu states the choices being chicken, beef, tofu or a variety of seafood, the price $14. I ordered the seafood, my husband ordered the tofu. When picking it up my husband was told the seafood was an extra $6. There were 5-6 pieces of seafood in my dish, thats $1 for each piece of seafood in the dish. I did call and was told online pricing was not updated ... really. Doesn't matter how good the food is. Actually a surprisingly good place. Excellent choices even the garlic chicken is very tasty. The big thing here is that they are tremendously popular and even when coming early they are very busy so make a reservation. The authenticity of this place is unreal because in the fall they serve you soup in a pumpkin with the top carved out of it. There are plenty of exotic dishes and they even have a whole section in the menu devoted to curry dishes. The service is great not like take out but you sit down casually even though it might look a little nice but you order drinks then food like a normal restaurant. We are huge fans of Thai food and growing up our weekly take out would be from a family owned Thai restaurant. This however doesn't come anywhere close to tasting like an authentic Thai restaurant. I've tried really hard to find something I like on the menu because I'm desperate for a good Thai place in Rochester but have failed miserable. The closest thing I found to be bearable is the Panang curry. However nothing to go running back for especially given the high price tag. During one of our experiences they made our food unbearably spicy and we asked for it to be sent back and made less spicy. Instead of remaking it though they literally washed it or diluted it water and brought the same curry back. It was even more disgusting. Straight up spice does not equal good flavor, and this concept is lacking here. Overall I think this is an Americanized Thai restaurant aimed at pleasing the Rochester crowd but missing the authenticity and real taste of Thai food. read more

Extremely disappointing service. We called ahead to order take out, and were quoted 45 minutes and food would be ready. We showed up at 50 minutes knowing the previous reviews stated issues with the timing of food delivery. We were kindly greeted but told that our food had not been started and it would be another 25-30 minutes until our two entree meal was prepared to go. Needless to say, with a two year old in the car, we declined the food and will sadly say we may not return for future business. Poor business management. I ate at the express food Mango Thai in the Galleria Food Court area. It is super expensive for the amount of food you get. An entree is about $10 and they don't even fill the small container they use. You get twice as much food for about the same price at the Chinese restaurant around the corner. The amount of food you receive is absolutely not worth the price they charge you for it. And when you ask for more, they say no. The food is so flavorful and has the ingredients southeast Asian food should have. I had the basil duck on bok choy and it reminded me of something my mom has cooked so much. The veggies were still al dente which I like. The spice factor was pretty good, but I think it could do more spice for being a 3 star spicy food (3 being the spiciest). We started with the fried squid, which had tempura batter, so it was tender and crispy. I ended with the fried bananas with ice cream. The bananas are wrapped in egg roll wraps and was a good contrast to the vanilla Ice cream. A nice ending to a great meal. I would highly recommend coming here for your Asian food needs, lol. Mango Thai is a staple in Rochester! The only bad thing about it is that they take forever to provide your to-go order. I don't know how many times I have called in and they've said it was an hour wait. I show up an hour later and wait 20-30 minutes. Just be warned in advance ;). For the most part, it's worth these inconveniences. I get the Tom Yum soup, extra veggies, normal spice, add tofu. It is the best tom yum I have ever had! And honestly I can get two meals out of it it's so big. I go once every couple of weeks! read more

Love Mango Thai in St. Paul and so happy they opened in Rochester. Food was perfect, just like in St. Paul. Crab rolls were perfect. Duck was very nice. Only thing, we asked to have it spiced up a bit and it really wasn't. Delicious sauce though. My only hesitation with this location is the ambiance. They seem to be shooting for the trendy, young crowd. Restaurant seems sterile. Wait staff very prim and proper. Very cold both figuratively and literally. I like the St. Paul feel more. I heard of Mango Thai from a local who lived in Rochester and recommended this place for dinner. This was a work dinner so I took a party of 15 who were hungry and ready for some good Thai food. This place did not disappoint when it came to food. The Pad Thai with chicken and shrimp, pineapple fried rice, cashew chicken, shrimp spring rolls, chicken satay, tom yum and tom kha soups and spicy beef dishes were all superb. Only gripe, service was very friendly but extremely slow. The restaurant was very crowded and I noticed our waiter also needed to multi-task as the bartender (it took ages to order and get our cocktails), bus boy and even cashier. But the food is outstanding so that trumps their slow service and gets 4-stars. I definitely recommend Mango Thai but make sure you're on a flexible schedule and have some decent time to spare. read more
